Have you ever paid attention to the assumptions we have in our conversations with different people? Often when we’re listening to another person tell their story, we’re listening for the things that we want to hear rather than what the other person is trying to show us at that moment. This bias blocks our listening fully to the other person. Lori Joubert takes us on a deep dive into the art of listening and how we can listen towards a better world of understanding. In this episode, Lori talks about her idea of what good listening is, the importance of being heard by people and equally hearing them and their stories. She also speaks about what is at stake if we don’t keep moving toward a listening culture. She explains how she practices being present and also shares insights on how you can become part of the solution – how you can practice listening as a powerful tool for people to experience in life. Lori Joubert is a dedicated coach, facilitator, trainer, and Certified Listening Professional with over 20 years of experience leading and managing groups and individuals with an emphasis on listening. She received her degrees in Speech Communications from the University of Washington. Since then she has taught, modeled and promoted good listening in several arenas. She has served on the board of the International Listening Association (ILA) in different roles, recently as president. Lori brings a deep desire to serve and a commitment to seeing all sides of every situation. She enjoys bringing people together for the benefit of building healthy and successful relationships. She is naturally curious about people and passionate about listening as an essential human activity. Her big vision is to really sustain people’s connection through listening and continue to build listening more through genuine and meaningful relationships. She believes that by being part of a community that wholeheartedly believes that listening has a meaningful and powerful place in organizations and in our life, she’s able to live life better and be of help to others. “Silence is not inactive; it’s actually active. There is a lot going on within the silence that we underestimate all the time...a lot of good listening is happening in moments of silence.” – Lori Joubert Grow Your Listening Superpower for Lasting Impact! Key Takeaways: “Oftentimes, when we’re listening to another person tell their story, we’re listening for the things that we want to hear, rather than listening for what the other person is trying to show us at that moment; and that blocks listening.” – Lori Joubert “If you walk into a conversation with some sort of notion already of how you think that conversation’s gonna go, you’ve already stopped listening.” – Lori Joubert “Learning one’s culture is significant to listening. It helps you adapt and become a better listener.” – Lori Joubert “Don’t give up. If you’ve gotta handle on something that’s working in the way you listen, or you see others are listening, or the way you see listening is being taught in your organization, stick with it, carry on, and keep looking at how to make it grow.” – Lori Joubert Notes/Mentions: Kate Murphy’s “You’re Not Listening: Here’s What You’re Missing and Why It Matters” International Listening Association (ILA) Connect with Lori Jubert: lori.joubert@listen.org Website: https://listen.org Linkedin Connect with Raquel Ark: www.listeningalchemy.com Mobile: +491732340722 contact@listeningalchemy.com LinkedIn
Today’s guest is Lori Osterberg. She is an author, content creator, educator, and, in her own words, a “Gen-Xer who has been setting the online world on fire for the past 20 years.” Currently in a little town outside Portland, OR, Lori is living what she recently realized to be her dream life. She writes up to three books a year and just recently published her ninth novel. Lori recalls how at the start of their careers she and her husband lived through several rounds of corporate downsizing. They got to a point where they decided enough was enough—it was time to take control. Since then, Lori and her husband have been in business for themselves, bringing together their interest in computers with their artistic skills in photography. Then when their daughter was looking at colleges she first heard of the “gap year” concept. Inspired, they decided to truly maximize their freedom and explore new possibilities. As it turns out, their gap year turned into a gap rest-of-their-lives! Listen in and learn how Lori achieved the freedom to do what she loves, and how she helps other women over 40 do the same. One of the biggest takeaways for me was the examples Lori demonstrates around getting creative and scrappy in her business, especially when she was first starting out and learning everything she could. Some of the biggest takeaways from my chat with Lori: Qualities that are undervalued when it comes to entrepreneurship Showing up exactly as you are for true authenticity What Lori wishes someone had told her about building a business How to get over perfectionism and the "shoulds" Knowing when to ask for help Operating as a "socially successful introvert" Whether you're an entrepreneur or not. you're going to get a lot out of this episode because Lori is giving all kinds of incredible nuggets of wisdom that can be applied in various capacities to anyone's life and help you to show up as the best possible version of yourself. How you can surround yourself with the right people that help you achieve what you want.
I’m still on my book tour, and it means the world to me to share the room with so many amazing women. And while it’s a massive dream come true, it’s also forced me to make some massive perspective shifts when it comes to traveling, speaking, signing books and taking pictures. I’ll be honest, it can be a lot for this introvert who is prone get to getting anxiety! But once I’m able to slow down and change my perspective on it all – there’s no way I wouldn’t do what I’m doing. It’s just all about changing the way we view things. One question I pose to my book tour audiences is, “what’s stopping you from connecting in different relationships?” “In order for things to change, we have to change how we’re viewing things.” Whether it’s your body, career or relationships, it is imperative that we shift our perspectives before anything can happen. We need to shift into how we want to feel. It’s amazing how this small little thing (OK, not always the easiest task), can give you tons of energy back. No matter what you’re feeling anxiety around, change the lens you’re viewing it through and see how you can make it easier. There could be a different (and better) way. Do this, and you’ll be on the fast track to changing your life. -- In This Episode Lori talks about: Shifting your perspectives Why the way we view things may be preventing connection What Lori’s book tour is teaching her Resources: Go to ATribeCalledBliss.com to find out the latest on Lori’s book tour and join the world’s biggest tribe book club A Tribe Called Bliss by Lori Harder Now available at loriharder.com/amazon or ATribeCalledBliss.com Join me on the A Tribe Called Bliss Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1571018952966750/ Check out my website at loriharder.com. Lori Harder is a self-love expert, transformational speaker, cover model, the host of the Earn Your Happy podcast, and the author of the upcoming book A Tribe Called Bliss: Break Through Superficial Friendships, Create Real Connections, Reach Your Highest Potential. Lori has overcome a number of obstacles that most of us will never have to face, and she’s come out on top every time. She’s an incredible person, and I’m pumped to share her powerful story and belief with all of you. In This Conversation We Cover: [6:00] How Lori’s unique upbringing affects her perspective on spirituality and the world. [9:30] Struggling with weight as a child (and overcoming it). [11:45] Dealing with anxiety. [17:30] Embracing “freedom” with bad habits. [20:30] The dark night that changed Lori’s life. [27:00] How Lori worked through her trauma. [27:40] Lori’s manifested dreams for the future becoming a reality. [38:10] The powerful belief that Lori has that most people don’t (and how she trained herself to believe it). [40:40] Earning your happy. [44:25] What Lori does for herself when she needs to feel better. The Darkness Lori grew up in a very religious and restrictive family, exposed to a limited view of the world throughout much of her childhood. However, having that experience – and challenging it – has had a big impact on who Lori is today. Whether it’s your religious beliefs or the belief that you are unhealthy due to “bad genetics,” it’s hard to believe anything different if you are only ever exposed to one view. As a result of her environment, Lori was in fear all the time. When she met people with a different (and, at times, more loving) perspective of the world, she could not wrap her brain around some of the conflicting ideas… at first. Being exposed to wildly different ideas and working through that inner conflict, ultimately, gave Lori “massive perspective.” She dug deep into herself and asked an important question: What feels right for me? Unfortunately, that wasn’t the darkest time in Lori’s life. After graduating, Lori bounced from a straight edge religious background to a party lifestyle. She met a lot of interesting people and it helped broaden her horizons, but she also picked up a number of unhealthy habits. Then, one night in Cancun, she was separated from her best friend in a club. In her efforts to find her friend, Lori ended up in a cab outside of town. The man who brought her there intended to rob her and leave her there, and she struggled to fend him off for hours. Then, she had a moment – “a crazy, clarifying moment” – and she knew what to say. She humanized herself, and she told the man that God knew what he was doing and would forgive him if he brought her back. She drove back to town with a knife pressing against her neck, but she got back – and over the next few years, she started to transform her life. A Tribe Called Bliss Today, all of the dreams that Lori manifested are coming true. It was a long, hard journey, but she’s starting to see the rewards. Lori believes it’s important to share this journey with others, bumps and all, because then they can see how much intention and time goes into creating happiness and living your purpose. It’s not always easy, and it takes daily planning, but anyone can do it!
