Through Her Eyes: Republishing a Powerful Memoir from Palestine with Oran Kivity

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Oran Kivity, son of the late Ruth Jordan who wrote her memoir Daughter of the Waves.   British acupuncturist and coach Oran Kivity trained in Europe, China, and Japan. He has been in continuous practice since 1987 and specializes in Japanese methods. In 2000, he was a founder member of Toyohari UK, the British branch of the Toyohari Association of Japan. In recent years, he developed the Ontake Method, which won awards from Harper's Bazaar Magazine in 2014 and Global Health Pharma in 2019 for the most innovative new healing method.   His books, Moxa in Motion and Hirata Zone Therapy received praise and recognition from acupuncture journals worldwide, including the Journal of Chinese Medicine, the European Journal of Oriental Medicine and North American Journal of Oriental Medicine.  He took on this project to republish his mother's memoir as a tribute to her and so younger generations of his family knew her story.   Oran lived and worked in Malaysia from 2005 till the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 when he moved to Taiwan. He now practices, writes, coaches and teaches from the southern port town of Kaohsiung, where he lives happily by a river, near a lake and close to the sea.   In her book book review, Carole stated: Reading Daughter of the Waves was a new experience for me. I had very little knowledge of Palestinian life before 1940. And, while I expected to read an autobiography, I found what I was experiencing was similar to sitting at the kitchen table with a neighbor over a cup of tea as she recalled memories of growing up in a seaside suburb of Haifa, called Bat Gelim, in pre-war Palestine. She didn't recite a chronological list, but rather highlights as she remembered them. It was obvious she had a love of adventure. From the Flying Camel to the cyclist from Palestine to London to raise money to build a Jewish sports stadium in Palestine, her humor was always part of the portrait of a child and a nation growing side-by-side. Her delight in the Palestine Orchestra conducted by Toscanini did not overshadow her memory of the Arab revolt to stop the Jewish immigration in 1936. And I will always remember her belief that no Arab woman is worth her bride price until she can cook eggplant in seven different ways. Her resolve to become a wizard with eggplants came from her mother. Each chapter could be a book. Read them over time or in one sitting. But do put this book on your TBR list.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Oran Kivity: Website: https://orankivity.com/ Social media: https://www.facebook.com/oran.kivity https://www.instagram.com/orankivity/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/orankivity/   Purchase Daughter of the Waves on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/40D7RYC Ebook: https://amzn.to/3Ec8nWd   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #orankivity #ruthjordan #daughterofthewaves #memoir #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Nakkiah is also a fashionista starring on the first Australian cover of the relaunched Harper's Bazaar Magazine.  In this episode Jess and Nakkiah dig deep on her life, from the horrific bullying she endured as child, to her emerging gift of storytelling, something she has manifested into an international career.  While Nakkiah has risen to become one of the country's most in-demand playwrights and screenwriters, she credits imposter syndrome for her unwavering drive and determination, a behaviour she's now trying to unlearn as she navigates a new chapter in her life, motherhood. Lindsay Peoples and Samira Nasr: Advice to Journalists, The State of Fashion Media, and The Role of Editor-in-Chief I love facilitating panel discussions and for this season of Pod Noor, we decided to bring that collective energy here. For this week's episode, I spoke with the two of the most innovative and prominent magazine editors: Lindsay Peoples and Samira Nasr.  Lindsay Peoples is Editor-in-Chief of The Cut Magazine. Also, one of the nation's rare Black Women Editors-in-Chief. Lindsay was previously the EIC of Teen Vogue, and the youngest EIC of a Conde Nast  magazine. Lindsay also co-founded the Black in Fashion Council, which has enlisted the support of the human rights campaign to provide benchmarking around corporate policies and practices that are pertinent to the inclusivity of black employees. Samira Nasr is the editor in chief of Harpers' Bazaar Magazine, and the first Black Woman to hold the title. Samira was previously at Vanity Fair, where she served as Executive Fashion Director. In Her own words she is “The proud daughter of a Lebanese father and Trinididadian mother, and her worldview is expansive and anchored in the belief that representation matters.” I have been in awe of both of these women for years, witnessing up close the way they have broken barriers both in journalism and in fashion; and here it is, on Podcast Noor, that these two powerhouses are in a conversation like this for the FIRST TIME.  Welcome to our first podcast panel! At Your Service, Noor Some Questions Asked in This Episode: What do you feel is the responsibility of an editor in chief of a media publication today? What resources do fashion magazines have at their disposal? What are the additional resources needed? Do you find yourself still encouraging people to pursue journalism? What do we need to be talking more about with young storytellers? What are you feeling about your places in fashion and in this industry today?  How do we (do we?) prevent tokenization in fashion? ☕️ This episode is sponsored by our friends at Ahmad Tea:  www.ahmadteausa.com, @ahmadteausa: www.instagram.com/ahmadteausa

How well do you know your colleagues? How much do you socialise with them? Do you have an annual retreat for your colleagues and their families?   After you listen to this episode you may reflect on these questions. To give your patients the very best care possible it seems obvious that your team needs to know each other, understand the strengths and weaknesses of each other, and combine and communicate well in the clinical environment. So how much time does your department devote to fostering a department culture that feels like a family? Including getting to know each team member’s actual family. How much do you do? My Intensive Care department does this pretty well but we could always do better. And we haven’t done a retreat in my time working there. In the final episode of 2018, you’ll listen to Dr June Goh who is all about fostering such a family environment. She came up with the idea of taking her colleagues and their families on an annual weekend retreat over a decade ago. And she organises regular resident and medical officer engagement sessions with fun activities. All of which I suspect brings them tighter together as a more harmonious team, thereby helping their patients. June is a Senior Consultant in Singapore General Hospital and the Director of Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical Care. She is very involved in teaching both medical students and post graduate doctors as member of the Core Faculty Anaesthesia Residency Programme, Chair of the Residency Welfare Committee, Adjunct Assistant Professor Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and Clinical Lecturer in the Yong Loo Lin Medical School. She chairs the Singapore General Hospital transplant oversight committee. June also currently serves on the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music Board, Dover Park Hospice Governing Council and co-chairs the fundraising committee. She has been an active member and past president of the Association of Women Doctors Singapore (AWDS) helping out with the various activities organised by AWDS. June is currently President of the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations and is passionate about women's family and health issues. This episode was recorded in May 2018 as a live interview in front of a conference audience at the 5th SG-ANZICS Asia Pacific Intensive Care Forum. Thanks to that meeting's Organising Committee, representing Singapore’s Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SICM), Singapore, and the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS), I was invited to conduct several live interviews for this podcast. Many thanks to Tan Hon Liang and David Ku for this opportunity. In this conversation June also spoke on topics such as: Her early career Her perspective on Singaporean gender equality How she mixed bringing up her children with being a busy doctor Building trust and rapport to strengthen communication with patient’s families Her perspective on some of the innovations in medical education Coping with work stresses to stay balanced Managing our device usage in the smartphone era Identifying and mentoring successors to our institutional roles Her thoughts on lifestyle factors such as yoga, exercise and sleep Her enjoyment of fashion The Mastering Intensive Care podcast is aimed to inspire and empower you, as an intensive care clinician, to bring your best self to the intensive care unit, through conversations with thought-provoking guests. My hope is that by listening to the show you’ll hear at least one thing to help you improve, as either a healthcare professional or as a person, with the ultimate aim of helping your patients. Please help me to spread the message by simply telling one of your colleagues, posting on social media or subscribing, rating and reviewing the podcast. I met MacKenzie sophomore year of high school, and it has been amazing to watch her journey unfold over the years to where she is now. After dedicating her entire life to swimming, on the path to be in the Olympics, life took a surprising turn, and she was asked to surrender those plans. After taking some time to grieve what she thought her life would be, she created a new dream.  Before she knew it she was participating in her very first pageant to be Miss District of Columbia, and to her surprise, she won. She went on to compete in Miss USA and soon after graduated from Columbia University with an MBA.  In our conversation we also talk about MacKenzie's life growing up ~ what she learned from her father, Ernest Green, who faced extreme adversity and racism in his life when he became the first black man to graduate from what was one of the nation's largest all-white high schools in Little Rock, Arkansas. MacKenzie's story reminds us to stay strong in the face of adversity, always remember our dreams and reminds us we are often so much more capable than we could ever imagine.  "You don't get a testimony without a test. When you are in those storms, when it feels like everything around is falling apart, or that it is too much to handle - know that whatever you believe in wouldn't give you more than you can handle. Look at it like 'wow, this is one heck of a storm, and it will be one heck of rainbow.' " In this episode we discussed: MacKenzie's reflections on Beyonce’s epic performance at Coachella How letting go of an identity ~ dreams of being an Olympic swimmer ~ allowed MacKenzie to open to new opportunities and growth MacKenzie's journey of becoming Miss DC and a top participant in Miss USA The impact MacKenzie's father, Ernest Green, one of the Little Rock Nine & the first black man to graduate from the one of the nation's largest all-white high schools impacted her life Cyber bullying and the vulnerability that comes with being in the public eye  MacKenzie's journey to body positive thinking  How the fear of success can often hold us back more than our fear of failure The gifts in our challenges  Stay in touch with MacKenzie: Twitter Instagram  Facebook MacKenzie Green is a graduate of Columbia Business School with a concentration in entertainment and marketing. MacKenzie is the Vice President of the Media Management Association conference, member of Hermes Society, a Lord Laidlaw Scholar, and social media ambassador for Columbia Business School. Previously she interned with Harper’s Bazaar Magazine as an assistant to the Editor In Chief, Paramount Pictures (Worldwide and Domestic Market Research), and spent the fall with NBCU Ad Sales on Lifestyle brands She is a graduate of the University of Miami, with a double major in broadcast journalism and sports administration and on the Provost Honor Roll.  While at UM she was named station manager at UMTV, the first African American and first female to hold this position in the 29-year history of the station.  She also held duties as UMTV-News Vision Lead Sports Anchor (Emmy-nominated); Sports Desk Commentator; Feature Reporter for which she won two SunCoast Emmys. She was also a UM Alumni Association Ambassador; and EDGE Reporter for the Miami Hurricane campus newspaper.    She serves as a board member for the University of Miami Young Alumni Council. She served on the National board for the National Council of Negro Women, serving as Young Adult Vice Chair. Additionally she was a UCLA Riordan MBA Fellow, served as the 2013 Class Chair and Riordan Gala Co-manager. To commemorate the 57th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Ms. Green was awarded the Legacy Award by the Southern Youth Leadership Development Institute, cited as a “Legend in the Making.”   Some of her charitable services have included: The Links Inc., Capital City Chapter; The Sisterhood LA; Relay For Life, team captain; Georgetown University Hospital, patient advocate; Washington Hospital Center, physical therapy volunteer; Reading Is Fundamental Book Drive; Juvenile Diabetes Association; Television Advocacy; and Metropolitan AME Church, Junior Stewardess, WDC. At 21, she graced the runway for the very first time as a beauty pageant contestant, winning the swimsuit and evening gown categories on her way to the premier top honor—Miss DC USA 2010, and competing on the Miss USA stage on NBC.  She has championed teen self-esteem and health and fitness for low income families, all under the umbrella of education and inclusion.

Did you know that Lauren Bacall was Jewish? Her mother was from Romania, and her father's family was from an area that was in what is now Belarus. She was born in the Bronx in 1924. Her parents divorced when she was 6 years old, and her mother raised her as a single mother. She spent a lot of time with her very warm extended family, her mom's family the Weinsteins, in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The name Bacal is a form of Weinstein in Romanian, apparently, though it's not clear to me how. Her mother changed their name to Bacal after her divorce. The name Lauren was given to her by the director of her first movie, Howard Hawks. Lauren Bacall's name was originally Betty Joan Perske,. Two interesting things about her name are: She always preferred to be called Betty, rather than Lauren, even well into her stardome She liked to say that she and Shimon Peres, the Prime Minister and President of Israel, were cousins, because her maiden name was Perske, and Peres is a form of Perski, and their families were both from the same area, then, part of the Russian Empire. So Betty Bacal studied acting and was a fashion model, 5' 81/2” tall and gorgeous, in Greenwich Village. She was on the cover of Bazaar Magazine when she was discovered and asked to audition for a part in Hollywood. When she was only 19 years old she was in her first movie “To Have and Have Not” which was a huge success, she became a star right from the start. There she met, acted with, and fell in love with Humphrey Bogart, who she married, and had two children with. Here is a clip from that movie, To Have and Have Not, and she is speaking to Bogart. This could very well be her most famous line: Bogart died of cancer, sadly. She would eventually get remarried to actor Jason Robards, and have a third child, then divorce. Her deep voice was cultivated, so that she would always leave you knowing that she was in control, never flustered. Her famous look, with her head and eyes turned was originally used because she was nervous and her chin shook, so she held her head that way to prevent it. That became her signature look. Lauren Bacall was always cast in roles that were of women whose strong will complemented, rather than detracted from, their sexual attraction. She showed how female confidence is extremely attractive. She and Bogart became one of the most famous couples in Hollywood. After Bogart died, she said that she didn't want to become a professional widow in Hollywood, so she moved back to New York, and starred in many theater productions. She won two Tony Awards. She became socially and politically aware, famous for and proud of her liberal views. Although she did not bring her children up as Jewish, she was proud of being Jewish. She mentioned in an interview that she was sorry that she did not speak up about it early in her career, but she was very young, dealing with instant success, and it was not a priority for her at the time. Let's hear another clip from Lauren Betty Bacall, from an interview in 1995 for the BBC program, the Late Show: Face to Face. Lauren Bacall died of a stroke in New York when she was almost 90 years old. Thank you, Lauren, for choosing roles which portray strong, confident women. Beverly Hills Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jason Diamond shares his expertise on celebrity facelifts. What is the trend for 2015? We also discuss the misconceptions of removing fat under the chin.  Plastic Surgery is main stream and many people are getting facelifts younger and younger. But not all facelifts are alike and not one technique works on all patients.  Patients have many misconceptions today about plastic surgery procedures, it is an easy sell. What's most important is that they have an understanding of the procedure what it can and cannot accomplish. Celebrities and models  earn a living with their looks, there is no room for error, yet we all have seen some disastrous plastic surgery results. Dr. Diamond talks about his different facelift techniques and what is the new 2015 lift.  We also discuss misconceptions about fat and some of the common problems people have after procedures such Kybella, Thermage and other skin tightening devices used in the neck area. Eliminating fat will make you have a facelift sooner, according to Dr Diamond. The area under the chin and neck is a misunderstood area.  A common problem he sees after liposuction,Thermage or Ulthera is that the patient's necks is more wrinkled and creppy.  Most people with aging faces do not have any excess fat. Consumers need to be very careful about these treatments.   Dr. Diamond is dual Board Certified by the Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and by the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery.  Dr. Diamond was recognized at the 2008 Aesthetics Show as “Best Facial Plastic Surgeon” and honored with “The Best Facial Plastic Surgeon Award” by his peers and colleagues. Dr. Diamond has been the featured facial plastic surgeon on E! Entertainment's “Dr. 90210” for the last seven consecutive years and is used as a plastic surgery resource for such media as the Discovery Health Channel and Entertainment Tonight and publications such as Harper's Bazaar Magazine, Life & Style Magazine, and People Magazine. www.jasonbdiamond.com * pls note this episode had some challenging technical problems, my apologies  in advance.
