Gents, if you’re reading this, you’re probably the type of guy who wants to keep winning at life… But when you think about your family, your business, your health, and the legacy you’re building, are you pushing the boundaries of what’s possible? Are you intentionally creating space to design a life that gets you fired up? My chat with Matthew Januszek is all about achieving BIG breakthroughs — not just in your business, but in all areas of life! Matthew is a Husband, Father, Entrepreneur, Co-Founder of Escape Fitness, and someone who is continuously learning and leveling up. In our conversation, he shares lessons learned from taking a company from the startup phase to a well-known international brand, raising incredible kids, and interviewing incredible thinkers on his own podcast, fittingly called Escape Your Limits. We talk about keeping the spark alive with your wife, co-creating dreams, winning with the kids, work/life balance, fitness, supplements, and a whole lot more! Matthew Januszek Podcast Highlights What does Matthew love about his family - and what parts drive him nuts? How can you keep the spark alive and find attraction with someone you’re doing life with every single day? What you can do to “dream create” with your spouse. What makes it so hard to tap into your strengths as a joint person and create better relationships? The mistakes so many couples make as they try to “grow together.” Why Matthew believes the pandemic made him a better father. How can we help our kids to achieve their goals? The nutrition and workout routines that Matthew uses to maintain great physique–even at age 50. Why food matters just as much as exercise–and why this is what people struggle with most of all when it comes to feeling (and looking) good. How do we determine what we need to do to move the needle in life, love, and business? Why do we so rarely make deep connections with guys we meet in our 40s and 50s, as opposed to earlier in life? Vox co-founder, policy writer, and celebrated journalist Matthew Yglesias knows what would actually make America great: more people. Today we speak with Matthew to discuss this idea as captured in his book One Billion Americans: The Case for Thinking Bigger. After introducing him, we dive straight into the topic and ask Matthew to unpack how population growth will benefit the US. He then shares how his book appeals to both sides of the political spectrum, despite the backlash that his ideas have received. We compare historical US immigration with the current economic climate before looking into why immigration doesn't necessarily lead to infrastructural challenges, as is often argued. While reflecting on how policy choices impact public projects, we touch on the COVID vaccine rollout and explore issues within America's political culture. Later, we hear Matthew's take on whether an ascendant China will forge a stronger America, the positive effects of inclusive American nationalism, and how giving people access to opportunity fosters innovations. Near the end of the episode, we chat about how policy affects birth rates, how zoning reforms might inspire stronger agglomeration, and why Matthew left Vox. Matthew presents a clear vision for how we can increase national prosperity. Today’s guest is acclaimed interior designer and photographer Matthew Patrick Smyth. He has been on ELLE Décor’s “A” List, his work has been featured in House Beautiful, Traditional Home, New York Magazine and more. He also wrote a new book “Through a Designer’s Eye: A Focus on Interiors”. We talk about his polished yet comfortable spaces, his love of artisanal pieces and antiques, his attention to detail and light, and some touching personal stories. What You’ll Hear on This Episode: Trials & Triumphs about feeling at home in a temporary rental, a pregnancy announcement (!), COVID within the family, tearing down and rebuilding a house, a nightmare new build next door, considering new drapery, and dishwasher woes. Matthew explains how his process begins — starting with the floorplan. Where Matthew finds his artisanal pieces and what he loves about them. Matthew’s love of antiques led him to interior design and carries into all elements of his style. How Matthew’s experience as a photographer impacts his design. The ways Matthew was able to decorate a casual seaside home and still use antiques. Why Matthew has an affinity for round dining tables and what chairs he recommends. More about Matthew’s personal home and falling in love with it. Matthew uses upholstery to modernize an older house with all antique interiors. Matthew’s love of black(ish) paint. What Matthew does to individualize the work for his clients. Matthew shares about his work and friendship with Gloria Vanderbilt. How is a designer’s eye different from the average person’s? Decorating Dilemma  Hi Jenny, First of all, thank you for including the floorplan—so helpful! This is a very generous width for a dining room so the sideboard is not going to throw off the room; there’s still plenty of room and no flow problem whatsoever. It’s not a floor to ceiling piece, so your eye will go right over it. I would put a big mirror over the sideboard to reflect the windows and the beautiful view. That will really open up the room. It’s really important to keep that chandelier centered with the windows so I would not touch that. The table centered in the room is the way to go. It’s good that you’re thinking about it now…but don’t overthink it! It’s actually a nicely designed floor plan and well proportioned; I wouldn’t play with that. You’re in good shape, Jenny! How making his captors laugh on day one of his captivity got him special treatment from a usually unforgiving crowd. “From the fall of man, the rest of the Bible is the story of man coming back to the tree of life. ”Question: What is the most mentioned living thing in the Bible, other than God and people? Answer: Trees On this week’s show, author Matthew Sleeth MD (MatthewSleethMD.com) talks about his new book “Reforesting Faith - what trees teach us about the nature and love of God.” Matthew reminds us that the tree is THE major metaphor in the Bible. Every main character and event in the Bible is associated with or linked to a tree. Yet over the years, trees have been eradicated from the scriptures by theologians. Why? Matthew gives us a unique and powerful perspective on something that God loves very dearly. He says,“God loves trees, He gives them a ring on every one of their birthdays.

What you’ll learn about in this episode: Why Matthew believes that real estate is a vehicle to more options that allow him to have a greater fulfillment in his life The three things people are really searching for and how making more money is only one small piece of a much larger equation What the “Mel Gibson freedom” is and how to experience it in your own life and business How Matthew uses direct mail to connect with potential customers and why it is still very much relevant in today’s digital marketing age The reason direct mail reigns supreme for marketing today: it has to do with making the buying audience (Gen Xers, millennials, and baby boomers alike feel more connected to the brand) The other technologies Matthew uses in combination with direct mail to connect with his audience Why a one and done strategy is never enough and you MUST have a method in place, a process to follow-up or your direct mail campaign will be for naught The reason Matthew believes that return mail is far more promising than a return phone call What “touches” are in the cultivation of new customers and why they are so important to businesses and entrepreneurs How many touches it takes before you can set yourself apart from competitors How the response rate for direct mail increases with each follow-up or subsequent mailing and is rarely felt within the first one or two “touches The importance of tracking and why Matthew believes it is critical for helping you make decisions about whether a particular campaign is working or not What Matthew believes is the difference between mom and pop investors and those who are serious about building their businesses Why the “extra” is so important and how it can transform your life Resources: REInvestorSummit.com/Aitchison REInvestorSummit.com/reads REInvestorSummit.com/live REInvestorSummit.com/noteservicing REInvestorSummit.com/100 REInvestorSummit.com/coaching

When it comes to understanding what is coming in the future of work, there are few people who have more relevant insights than Matthew Brimer. Matthew is the co-founder of General Assembly, a pioneer in education and career transformation that specializes in teaching people today's most in-demand skills. This conversation with Matthew is intriguing, hitting on many themes having to do with the future of work and what you can do to position yourself for success, so be sure you listen. ## Outcome oriented education that tees you up for real-world skills and employment. General Assembly is all about outcome-oriented education. What does that mean practically? It means the GA team approaches education not from the standpoint of a standardized curriculum, but rather from the perspective of what the desired end-goal is. They do so by staying abreast of what companies are and will be looking for in terms of employee skills and talents in years ahead. That enables General Assembly to stay on the cutting edge of what students need to learn. Find out why Ari and Nick have begun working alongside the General Assembly team, on this episode of Leverage. ## Why everyone needs to think more entrepreneurially about their career. When Ari asked Matthew Brimer about the future of work, he said that he's pretty certain that everyone in the workforce is going to need to learn how to think entrepreneurially about their career. He's not saying everyone should become an entrepreneur, but that everyone needs to learn how to push the envelope, be creative, and take risks in order to discover the things about their field and their skillset that make them uniquely suited for particular roles. It's going to cause the workforce to be more agile, but more specialized, which is what Matthew believes the future will demand. Find out more of Matthew's thoughts about the future of work, on this episode. ## Experimentation is part of the game as you move forward on the success journey. Gone are the days of rote, mechanical roles in a static workplace. As technology and commerce advance at increasingly higher rates those in the workforce will be required to flex, adapt, and experiment, even in well-established roles. Matthew Brimer says that experimentation is part of what will enable people to discover their unique fit and thrive in the ever-changing future of work. As co-founder of General Assembly, Matthew has a unique perspective on this topic that you'll want to hear, so be sure to listen. ## To be more effective, intentionally and diligently surround yourself with people who raise the bar. Matthew Brimer is a person who knows that growth doesn't come from staying in the same environment you've always been in. That's why his advice about how to be more effective began with intentionally surrounding yourself with people who push you toward growth. He pointed out that great things are seldom done in isolation and those who achieve great things in their lives are those who are constantly interacting with others who are on the same trajectory. You can hear all three of Matthew's recommendations for how to be more effective, on this episode of Leverage. ## Outline of This Episode - [0:03] Welcome to Matthew Brimer - a guy who's a bigger deal than he realizes. - [2:40] Why Matthew is on the cutting edge of technology and education at the same time. - [4:55] What is Daybreaker and why did Matthew even try such an out of the box thing? - [10:30] How Matthew starts his day and manages time as his most important resource. - [14:30] How Matthew chooses the kind of companies he will serve as an advisor. - [16:39] Matthew's thoughts about the future of work. - [22:47] Why the valedictorian of the will not be the high achiever of the future. - [26:40] Matthew's biggest startup failure: they made every mistake in the book. - [35:00] What was the MVP for General Assembly? - [39:30] Matthew's top tips for becoming more effective. ## Resources --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lessdoing/message
