Facing failure? This week in Battle Drill devotionals, we focus on confession. It's tough to admit our sins and entrust ourselves to God's grace, but it is essential for our holiness and spiritual growth. Each weekday we share hope and encouragement as we read and study the Bible together. Facing Failure Isn't EasyDo you find it easy to face your failures? I know I don't! But sometimes, you reach a point in your life when you realise it's not working. Life doesn't have to be with this way. This is the point Nehemiah and the people of God had reached. Having been exiled from Jerusalem many years before and having returned to rebuild its walls, they realised just how far from God they had wandered. Facing failure, they confessed their sin and entrusted themselves to God's grace. They were determined to put God back front and centre in their lives. They reminded themselves what he had done throughout their history and trusted that God's unfailing covenant of love would mean he would save them once more. There are times when we too must admit we have wandered far from God and his purposes for our lives. We face our failures with him. When we let go of our pride, our stubbornness and our fear, facing failure, God moves in with his grace. Great is his faithfulness! Think It OverThink about the following: • Do you struggle to confess your sins to God? Why? There's a new episode of Battle Drill Devotional every Monday through Friday. Weekly SummaryThis week on Battle Drill Devotionals we examine the freedom Jesus brings from the power of sin. Each weekday we share hope and encouragement as we read and study the Bible together. IntroductionEvery day, you and I are controlled by something. Many of us are controlled by our desires. Others are controlled by fear. Some are controlled by guilt. Still others are controlled by the expectations of those around them. Some people are controlled by their addictions. If what you are controlled by doesn't seem like your choice, you can feel trapped and imprisoned. Living in Freedom from SinLiving in Freedom comes from choosing what, or more specifically, who is going to control your life. Paul encourages us to choose Jesus to control our lives, and to live in freedom from sin deciding how we are going to live. Living in Freedom: How?How can we choose freedom in Christ? We can identify and be honest with God about our weaknesses. We can recognise and keep a watch out for the things that tempt us. We can choose to stay away from the sources of our temptations. We can ask the Holy Spirit to help us practice self-restraint. We can spend more of our time investing in good habits and in service to God. We can lean on God's strength and grace to help us. And we can let the peace of God fill our hearts. Living in Freedom Comes from Choosing to Depend on GodDo you want freedom from the prison life of being controlled by sin and the world? Living in freedom comes from making the choice to depend on God. He will give you the freedom you crave. Think It OverThink about the following: What keeps you from fully giving control of your life to God? There's a new episode of Battle Drill Devotional every Monday through Friday. Today on episode 55 I'm honored to welcome Darrow Kirkpatrick, former engineer, climber, investor, author, and the creator of the popular blog CanIRetireYet.com. Darrow began serious saving and investing in his mid-30s and retired at age 50 in 2011 from a career in software engineering. In this wide-ranging interview, we explore why Darrow stepped away from personal finance writing after creating a popular blog, his adventures on the Colorado Trail and the inspiration for a memoir, and the journey and struggle to finding meaning and purpose at any stage in life. Darrow Kirkpatrick: An IntroductionDarrow was eager to share the methods and values of frugality and simple personal finance in the early days of his retirement, leading to the creation of his blog. Over time, though, his interest in the subject slowly waned, replaced by the need for more adventure. He partnered with Chris Mamula, eventually releasing the reigns of the blog to Chris. In the intervening years, Darrow has spent considerable time in contemplation of purpose and meaning in retirement, an often under-discussed and potentially difficult reality. This spiritual journey ultimately led him to pursue a boyhood dream of hiking the Colorado Trail. To achieve this lofty goal, he faced mental and physical hurdles, including walking the length of the trail with forearm crutches. Darrow has been busy writing a memoir of that experience, titled Rain and Fire in the Sky: Beyond Doubt on the Colorado Trail. Additionally, he has created a new website dedicated to cataloguing and reviewing other trail memoirs, at trailmemoir.com, where you can keep up with the latest on his upcoming book. This interview offers a unique perspective on the softer side of financial optimization. We can be masters of technical methods of saving and investing, but ultimately none of that matters without clear direction, purpose, and meaning in our lives. As a retiree of twelve years and counting, Darrow has plenty of lessons for us all. Lately, while working through my own illegible life script, I've been identifying some unsettling, troublesome bits. Instead of gently flagging them and continuing onward, allowing the questions of “why am I troubled by that? What does it mean?” to just be there in the background, I've stopped in place, gnashing my teeth and wailing “Why is this in my script?!? I don't understand it!!! I don't want it here! Give me something prettier to say! to work with!” I can't afford to give the writers a raise so this is the script I've got. For now. But it's a perfectly fine script. And I know the work to do on it . . . I know how to do it. And on my better days (and there are many of them, something else for me to remember) I also trust that in those troublesome bits, those riddles, some potential for transformation lies. But I can't go at ‘em with hammer and thongs. Maybe personal revelation will come. Maybe it won't. But in the interim, I'm getting work done on the rest of the script. And life goes on.
