Digging a Hole: The Legal Theory Podcast

In the face of what is inarguably bad governance and fake—but spectacular!—technocracy (the list goes on and on, but we'll stop at AI-generated tariffs), we thought we'd take a moment to join the conversation about what good governance looks like. A couple of weeks ago, one of us reviewed Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson's new book, Abundance, for the New York Times, and then the other one of us reviewed the review. So we figured: let's work it out on the pod? No guests on this episode, just the two of us in a brass-tacks, brass-knuckles discussion of the abundance agenda and the goals of twenty-first century economic policy. We dive right into what the abundance agenda is and who its enemies are: innovators and builders against NIMBYs and environmentalists on David's account; techno-utopians who discount the environment and politics on Sam's. We agree that housing policy, at least, has helped the better-off create a cycle of entrenching their position through stymieing construction and production. We find another point of agreement on how Klein and Thomson's abundance agenda attempts to harness the power of the state to build, and that certain left-wing critiques are off base, but disagree about whether their proposal is a break from the neoliberal era of governance and what that even was. In some ways, we end up right where we started, disagreeing about whether the abundance agenda seeks to unleash a dammed-up tide that can lift all boats, or whether the abundance agenda leaves behind everyone but a vanguard of “innovators” in the technology and finance sectors. Let us know if you've got a convincing answer. This podcast is generously supported by Themis Bar Review.Referenced ReadingsWhy Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress―and How to Bring It Back by Marc DunkelmanStuck: How the Privileged and the Propertied Broke the Engine of American Opportunity by Yoni AppelbaumOn the Housing Crisis: Land, Development, Democracy by Jerusalem DemsasOne Billion Americans: The Case for Thinking Bigger by Matthew Yglesias“Kludgeocracy: The American Way of Policy” by Steven TelesThe Rise and Fall of American Growth: The U.S. Standard of Living since the Civil War by Robert GordonThe Rise and Fall of the Neoliberal Order: America and the World in the Free Market Era by Gary GerstlePublic Citizens: The Attack on Big Government and the Remaking of American Liberalism by Paul Sabin“The State Capacity Crisis” by Nicholas Bagley and David SchleicherRed State Blues: How the Conservative Revolution Stalled in the States by Matt GrossmannThe Captured Economy: How the Powerful Enrich Themselves, Slow Down Growth, and Increase Inequality by Brink Lindsey and Steven Teles“Why has Regional Income Convergence in the U.S. Declined?” by Peter Ganong and Daniel Shoag“Exclusionary Zoning's Confused Defenders” by David Schleicher“Cost Disease Socialism: How Subsidizing Costs While Restricting Supply Drives America's Fiscal Imbalance” by Steven Teles, Samuel Hammond, and Daniel Takash”On Productivism” by Dani Rodrik

Most advisors dream of growing their business to the next level without grinding themselves into burnout. But how do you scale without sacrificing your time, freedom, and sanity? In this milestone 100th episode of Do Business. Do Life., I sat down with returning guest, Anthony Pellegrino, founder of Goldstone Financial Group. His first appearance on the show (Episode 16) was one of the most downloaded ever, and now he's back to share how he has doubled his firm's assets year over year—from $232M to over $460M+—all while building a business that runs without him behind the desk. For years, Anthony prided himself on being a machine—unstoppable, always grinding. But a simple conversation with his grandmother changed everything when she told him, "Machines break." That wake-up call forced him to rethink his approach and build a firm that could scale beyond just him.In this episode, Anthony breaks down how he transformed his role from financial advisor to CEO & visionary, built a team of elite advisors, and developed a business model that thrives without him being in the trenches. If you've become the bottleneck in your firm, this episode reveals Anthony's proven system for breaking free and scaling beyond what you ever thought was possible. 3 of the biggest insights from Anthony Pellegrino …#1.) If you're still doing all the client work, you're the bottleneck. Anthony shares how he removed himself from sales, client servicing, and marketing—without losing clients and growing exponentially#2.) Helping others scale strengthens your own success. Anthony doesn't just build his own firm—he openly shares his strategies with other advisors, proving that growth isn't a zero-sum game. His collaboration with leaders like Matt Dixon highlights how teaching others can reinforce your own systems and elevate the entire industry.#3.) Hiring doesn't create competitors—it builds a stronger business. Anthony rejected the fear that training advisors would lead them to go out on their own. Instead, he built a system and culture so strong that top talent never wants to leave.SHOW NOTEShttps://bradleyjohnson.com/100FREE GIFT + JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWToday's Gift: 30 minute 1:1 coaching call with BradAre you a financial advisor who feels stuck, needs help, or simply wants to have a conversation with Brad? Rupal discusses lessons in leadership, the value of emotional intelligence, and the power of “tactical ignorance” in decision-making and problem-solving. She also explores how owning one's uniqueness—what she calls “owning your weird”—can unlock potential and authenticity in leadership and life. Questions and Topics: What's your favorite mistake, and what did you learn from it? How did the accusation from your supervisor affect your working relationship? Did that experience lead to your decision to leave the CIA? What motivated you to join the CIA, and how did that opportunity come about? How did your CIA experience shape your transition into business and leadership? What CIA methods or mindsets do you think are most applicable to business strategy? How do you balance strategic planning with the unpredictability of real-world situations? Can you explain the concept of “tactical ignorance” and its role in decision-making? What advice do you have for leaders or entrepreneurs facing setbacks or mistakes? What inspired you to write From CIA to CEO, and what was the writing process like? Did you need CIA approval to share details in your book? What does “owning your weird” mean to you, and why is it important for leadership?

She served as a CIA analyst and field agent, earning war zone service medals and recognition from the CIA director for her "superior support to the president of the United States." She later transitioned into entrepreneurship, founding Entrepreneura, and has become a guest lecturer at the University of Edinburgh Business School and external faculty at Henley Business School. In this insightful conversation, Rupal shares her path from the CIA to becoming a successful author, speaker, and leadership expert. Her career includes earning an MBA from the London School of Business, leading Blue Infinity Property Group as CEO, and launching an international speaking career. Her best-selling book, From CIA to CEO: Unconventional Life Lessons for Thinking Bigger, Leading Better, and Being Bolder, captures her wealth of knowledge and experiences. Throughout the episode, she speaks passionately about leadership, her desire to create a positive, large-scale impact, and how her diverse experiences inform her approach to developing leaders. A standout quote from the episode comes when Rupal offers advice to young girls: "Choose your peers very carefully. The people we surround ourselves with either help us raise our bar or lower ourselves to our basest instincts." This encapsulates her emphasis on intentionality in personal growth and leadership development. Rupal's journey provides invaluable insights for executive coaches and leaders. Her focus on creating positive impact beyond individual success speaks to the power of influence at a broader societal level—particularly relevant for executive coaches guiding high-level clients who can shape entire organizations or industries. Lastly, Patel's message of "owning your weird," which she also discusses in her TED talk, encourages leaders to embrace their unique qualities as assets. Executive coaches can leverage this concept to help clients transform perceived weaknesses into strengths, fostering more authentic, confident, and effective leadership. This not only enhances individual success but also drives organizational growth. The Arete Coach Podcast seeks to explore the art and science of executive coaching. “Under Canvas had been a very light footprint, very ecologically sound, sustainable business.  But we realized there was another step - we could also build a regenerative company. And that's what we're trying to do now with our newest company, Few and Far, which is create an extraordinary five star experience, but at the same time, invest in the land, restore the land, regenerate the area in which we are at work, rather than being a business that is just trying to do no harm. And that's the difference.” We're in great company with Sarah Dusek, the Founder, along with her husband, Jacob, of Under Canvas, the premier outdoor hospitality company with glamping resorts outside of National Parks across America. Their newest adventure takes them farther into their search for a sustainable solution to travel than ever before. [7:15] How Sarah & Jacob cracked the code to “glamping”, reimagining a luxury safari experience in the natural wonders of the United States, with the creation of Under Canvas.  [11:15] It was a Field of Dreams moment of reassuring themselves, “if we build it, they will come,” when they opened their first light impact, minimally resourced tented hotel experience outside of Yellowstone National Park.   [12:45] “I wanted people to experience the magic of the stillness that exists in nature when you are able to hear yourself think.”  [18:40] Always ready for a new adventure, Sarah & Jacob are taking their latest nature immersive experiences a step further with Few & Far, rewilding, reforesting, repairing and restoring denigrated areas of wilderness to their pristine potential while redefining luxury hospitality at its roots. [23:20] You can be one of the first to stay in their soon to open Luvhondo Lodge in South Africa, bearing witness to more biodiversity at the foothills of the Soutpansberg Mountains than is found on the entire continent of Europe.  [26:50] Experience a safari stay unlike any other - with cliffside canvas clad suites, fine dining experiences out in the bush, aerial safari tours in solar cable cars, and active adventures among the wildlife.  [29:20] How traveling with Few & Far on their carbon neutral, ecologically sensitive and sustainable excursions spanning the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia, can teach us about ourselves, these places and the people we meet along the way.  [31:55] “We often think about travel as being a luxury if we spend huge amounts of money on travel, that actually that's indulgent, it's excessive. But I also know that my travel dollars really matter.” Hear Sarah share a profound story that shows this to be true.  Notable Mentions Robyn Woodhead's White Desert in Antarctica  Sarah Dusek | @sarahdusek | Thinking Bigger by Sarah Dusek  Visit For Yourself Under Canvas | @undercanvasofficial Few & Far Collection | @fewandfarcollection Stay In Good Company Website

There are serendipitous moments in life, particularly when two women who are equally passionate about storytelling and connection end up on a podcast together. In this episode, Anne Muhlethaler, coach, consultant and host of Out of the Clouds, interviews author, advisor and your hype-woman Lisa Bragg. Lisa tells Anne her story, starting by sharing her journey from TV news reporter to launching her business, MediaFace, pioneering what we now know as content for our digital world, before offering thoughts on the challenges posed by growing up with Bragg as a last name. Anne asks Lisa about the genesis for her book, Bragging Rights, as well as how she designed the proprietary research underpinning her argument. Lisa goes on to speak about reframing bragging as purposeful self-promotion, and the importance of creating a safe environment for people to talk about their successes either at home or at work, to support personal and professional growth. While some research out there advises women not to ‘brag' or celebrate their successes because of potential backlash, Lisa challenges the concept (and the research) and suggests that it's time for us to change the culture and sister up.  She also goes on to explain how exploring one's personal values can be one of many exercises (there are plenty more in her book) to explore meaningful self-promotion, highlighting that we are all the ‘CEO of our own life.' The two women also share their own experiences, clarifying that while this purposeful self-promotion exploration is important, it's often challenging. Anne admits to barely being able to name any of her successes and Lisa responds that ‘she is her book,' meaning that she too has times where she goes back into her shell, wishing to be discovered instead of doing the work of putting herself out there. Thankfully Lisa is crystal clear on her mission: to help others be seen and heard. She leaves listeners with this recommendation: Don't wait for others to give you opportunities, take them into your own hands.  Before adding ‘celebrate your successes and don't tear down others for their achievements.'A powerful conversation that can help all of us reframe what we know about bragging and self-promotion. Bill is a Managing Director and co-founded Cross Keys Capital in 2006. Bill leads the healthcare practice and is responsible for successfully closing 50 physician practice management transactions since 2010. He has over 25 years of experience in M&A including divestitures, acquisitions, restructurings, and capital raises for a broad range of clients both domestically and internationally. Prior to founding the firm, Bill worked at Outsource International, where he raised private capital, took the company public and led over 40 transactions. He has also worked at Ryder System, where he participated in a leveraged buyout of the truck rental unit, and began his career in the investment banking department at Morgan Stanley. Bill Britton wanted to be financially independent even as a young 10 year old... He's cleaned most toilets than most maids have ever cleaned in their life... He has done more trashy house work and low-level jobs... Watch FULL YOUTUBE INTERVIEW HERE All those jobs did not break Bill but built him. He did not attend the best school nor was he in the best grades. But when he went to school, he told himself that he was going to be the best. So, he graduated as first of his class. He was focused. First couple of years in college was not fun but he knew what he wanted to do and where he wanted to be. He later went to Wall Street and did some good work which allowed him to go to a really good grad school and it just gave the opportunity to do what he wanted to do. Today, Bill is not interested in doing 2 billion dollar deals of Golden Sachs which are relatively easy but he's doing 20, 30, 40 or 100 million dollar deals which are changing people's lives   In this episode you will take away many promising insights as below (plus many more):  o   Formula or recipe for luck o   Criteria to evaluate people for a mentor mentee relationship o   How to elevate mindset or financial blueprint to attain big numbers o   Entrepreneurial stages o   Advice for people getting into ‘Investment Banking World' Inspirational Quotes from the episode: -If you work hard at something and you stick to it, you'll have more opportunities to create your own version of luck -Unfortunately today, a lot of people think it's just instantaneous: it should happen to me right away, but that's just not how it works -No matter where you went to school or what you learned, it's on the job training that really works for everything -One of the most important things that anyone could do especially at a younger age is find a really good mentor or two who can guide them through the various facets of life -It's those relationships that make it a lot more challenging: whether it's business relationships or personal and navigating some of those things is really hard  -You got to hit a lot of singles to get someone around the bases -If you're going to be a trash man, be the best freaking trash man out there because one day you may figure out a path how to do something different with that -One of the biggest challenges that we actually see is entrepreneurs are not thinking big enough
