Clients include CEOs and founders, Admirals, Navy Seals, and FBI agents, Olympians, politicians (but apparently only the nice ones), bestselling authors and leaders of global movements.Sometimes a guest comes onto the podcast and you just know you're in for one helluva ride – this conversation was one of those. In it we dived into…Speech structure and the 5 foundational elements to a speechWhy ‘winging it' never works when it comes to impactful communication or presentations - and why the best communicators focus first on figuring out their ‘big promise' and working backwards from there. If you enjoy this powercut episode and would like to hear my full conversation with Michael Port please head over to my website juliemasters.com or listen at all the usual places #itunes #spotify #googleplay #stitcher. The Second Phase Podcast - Personal Branding & Brand Marketing and Life Strategies for Success for Female Entrepreneurs

What is brand positioning? When it comes to personal branding, it starts with your bio. Are you sharing your story, your passions, and your journey to attract clients? Brand positioning Let's dive into brand positioning and how you can use it to book yourself solid without getting so stressed and burnt out that you lose yourself. Elizabeth suggested that as you get older, think of your personal brand as a pirouette instead of a pivot. If you have to make changes, do so gracefully and gradually versus a jarring shift. People often think of a personal brand as needing to be on a stage speaking, writing books, famous, vocal on LinkedIn, but that is not necessarily the case. Who you are and how the world perceives you should always align. It is important to build your personal brand on who you are, not what you do. Our career is really a blip of our life and isn't what defines us. Time goes by very quickly, therefore it is important to know what brings you joy and makes you happy and to align your personal brand with your purpose. But, keep in mind this is always going to change based on circumstances and people around you. When you are doing what you love, you make more money and it doesn't feel so hard. Joy comes naturally when you are following your purpose because you are aligned with your values and passions. When you are in a positive flow, you will be more open to abundance. Two additional episodes mentioned by Robyn: Episode 150 - Living with purpose with Tayna Dalton Episode 130 - Become a limitless entrepreneur with Nicole Laino Your brand position begins with your bio Your bio is how people find out about you, it describes who you are, therefore, change the first paragraph to share something you are passionate about. The first intro of who you are should feel authentic to you. Find things that you have a very strong opinion about but are grounded in something you love. Unless you are an expert on certain topics, don't talk about them. Don't jump on the bandwagon because others are doing it or talking about it, You have to be genuine and stay aligned with your values, visions, and passions. Also, think about how your hobbies are helping you learn to be a better leader or help define your personal brand. Elizabeth gave the examples of coaching your child's baseball team or learning to make sourdough bread. There are ways that you can take everyday things that are interesting to you and make them relate to your personal brand. When you are talking about something that is truly authentic to you, you have no fear of saying the wrong thing. When you have something that is relatable, there is so much fear around sharing it, but there is also community and support when you share it. People will be grateful that you shared your story, no matter how small it seems, because they will connect with you if they've experienced it too. Vulnerability is key to discovering your brand positioning You are your journey. Every experience we've had has given us the authority to be able to help someone else. Robyn shared her story about anxiety and how sharing her journey, allows her to help her clients. We often question whether or not people will care about our stories and the things we do and love, but people appreciate these things. There is freedom in sharing without worrying about what other people think. In the search for your genuine self, are you more afraid of being accepted or rejected for who you really are? Elizabeth thinks it's more about acceptance because then you have to be that genuine you and we've lived lives that the rejected you has been accepted so it's easier to be that person. At least we tend to believe it is easier to be that person. What if people accept us for who we are with all of our flaws and imperfections? There is fear around this. Once we get past the fear, it will be easier to live as our genuine authentic selves. It gets very exhausting to live as inauthentic. Brand positioning involves vulnerability. Vulnerability is a step we have to take to find out what our personal brand looks like. It is also important not to cater to the whims of everyone around us. There is something unique about you that you can be vulnerable about. It can be anything, big or small. You are brave to share it. The positive and negative things are what your personal brand is at the core. These all help determine how others perceive you. There is an audience for everyone. When you are vulnerable and share your story, if there are people who don't like it, they aren't your people. There is an audience for everyone. Our job isn't to make everyone love us, but to attract those people who will love us in return. What is brand positioning and how does it help us build our personal brand to attract clients? Elizabeth recommends starting with your bio. That is who you are, how people find you, and how people learn about you. It is the first thing people ask for. Switch the first paragraph around to tell who you are, not just what you do. Then dive into 2 to 3 things that you are comfortable diving into. Things from your life experiences and your story that are relatable and worth sharing. Elizabeth recommended the book Essentialism. It is about the idea that we can't do everything great, and focus on the 1 to 2 things we are really good at. Instead of trying to do it all ourselves, know what you know and what you don't know, and delegate it. For people who want more of a public appearance, choose a social network. Whether you use LinkedIn, Twitter, or Instagram, pick one and go with it. When thinking about your personal brand, think about what happens if you die tomorrow. What will people say about you? This may sound very dark, but you want to leave a legacy that is beyond the work you do. What can you do right now to make sure that what you want people to say about you, they are saying right now? Work backward, what is that feeling you want people to have about you, and then start doing and living the way you want to be remembered. Michael and Andrew are the authors of the bestselling book 'Referable Speaker', world-class keynote speakers and teachers on how to build a sustainable speaking career. Here is some of what we cover in this episode: BOOK WRITING The key motivating factor to any successful author(if you watched the teaser video above, you might be able to guess what it is!) What it's like to co-write with another author(watch the 3-minute book trailer below for a taste of that too) The powerful breakthrough finding your role as an author Using your speaking gigs to test your book material The ask-the-buyer-for-stories strategy Writing from a place of knowing or vs. a place of discovery The necessity of qualified feedback Moving from Expertville to Visionary Town How the risky road will make you better at what you do How focusing on your current customers will fire up demand BOOK MARKETING Captivate target readers (and customers) with quality video and storytelling The entertainment factor, well-produced movie-style Building the expectation for the books ability to change me Showing the opportunity instead of telling Using the webinar as watch parties in B2B sales(and the impact on amazon ranking) The zero-marketing strategy (the quiet launch) The for-my-buddy booster strategy 99% of all 'failed' books do so because of insufficient marketing. After the actual launch, the author is exhausted and lacks the energy for continued promotion. Or the marketing plan consists of only launch-related promotion. As you hear on the podcast, these authors use a completely different strategy. The silent launch (listen to hear what that's about!) Long-term video assets They have created two amazing videos and they are absolute must-sees for you if you are looking to add a long-term component to your book marketing plan: A 3-minute book trailer video captivates target readers and makes them go check out your book immediately (you can model this for your own book marketing and I am breaking the structure down for you in this article) An absolutely genius 55-minutes prerecorded webinar you can use during launch so hoards of high-quality leads will stumble over each other to get the book (and rank up your book significantly on Amazon) You can watch both of them on the book's website. Then go to publishing-rebel.com to find and use my breakdowns of the videos to model your own. What You'll Learn From This Episode: Email subscription as a business asset How beneficial of email marketing Why you need to invest in an email system Related Links and Resources: I invented a little tip sheet that is 7 essential tips around email marketing that you'd probably don't know. And you can get that at www.confidentmarketer.com/billprater Summary: A veteran owner of both a brick-and-mortar business and a successful online consulting business, Sue Painter founded The Confident Marketer in 2006. She has provided business strategies for online and small business owners across the United States and in many other countries since that time. Sue is a certified Book Yourself Solid business coach, a certified email marketing specialist, and a quick study at seeing where solo and small business owners are stuck. She is a world traveler, having left home at 16 as an exchange student and now has been to every continent and more than 80 countries. Sue and her husband, Bill, currently live in the Sarasota, Florida area. Here are the highlights of this episode: Since Sue has been in the business for 20 years, she told us that her ideal clients had evolve along the way. Now, it's either a solopreneur or a small local business who need help in organizing their marketing, specifically their email marketing process and campaigns. Because of time factors or the lack of knowledge on the business owner's part, they really not developing the business asset of the email subscriber list in their existing customers and their prospects. Susan solves the problem to them on how to approach, set-up, sustain, and get measurable results through their marketing including email. Sometimes, these people realize that they don't have a way to contact their prospects or to reach out even to existing customers. They don't have a way to educate people about their business on a regular basis, or they don't know how to make quick offers in response to business changes. They usually tell themselves "I know I need to do but I don't have time because I have more pressing business" or they don't know who to reach out to when organizing their email subscription or structure it properly so it works 24/7 for them. Sometimes they don't even know how to pick the correct autoresponder software. And if they do have one, they either didn't update it or used it properly. Another factor as well is that they think people won't open their emails, but they will if they are compelling, interesting, and used in the right way. Susan shared with us that her clients usually wonder if maintaining a marketing system expensive or it's hard to get a return on investment compared to pay advertisement. She says that once you invested in an email system and get the one which is not too robust for you, then you will find that you will use that asset over and over again. It will actually be cheap compared to ads bing in most of the markets you can spend money in. Sue's Valuable Free Action (VFA): Just commit and make a decision that you're going to build your email subscriber list and that you're going to see them as an asset. If you're going to sell your business to the size of your subscriber list then it would be a one factor that will enter into the sale as well as how active and responsive that email list is. Pay attention and be consistent, just like in any business asset that you have.

When we think of attracting clients into our business, we immediately think of marketing. In this episode, he joins John Livesay to explain to us this contrarian idea as inspired by Michael Port's Book Yourself Solid, a handbook for self-promotion that can help you get more clients even if you hate marketing and selling. He discusses the effectiveness of emails and how best to format them, growing a personality-based brand, and becoming a person of value rather than a provider of value. With that, he's a former professional actor, and bestselling business author of five books (Book Yourself Solid, Beyond Booked Solid, Book Yourself Solid Illustrated, The Contrarian Effect and The Think Big Manifesto), with his sixth, Steal The Show, about to come out. With Steal The Show, Port is bringing together all of his skills in an effort to help business professionals present themselves better. While I've known Port's work since his first business book, most recently he has become an often-talked-about horse whisperer for very powerful speakers. Now, he's taken this master-class content and turned it into a book (and training platform). "When I started seeing myself as I actually am and allowing other people to see that too, I started feeling more powerful. " - Michael Port Can acting teach us more about life, being human and getting real with each other? Indeed it can according to our guest for show 293, Michael Port. Michael has been on such notable TV shows and films as Sex and The City, Law & Order, Third Watch and The Pelican Brief. He's a highly sought after keynote speaker and New York Times best-selling author of several books, including Book Yourself Solid. Today he's taking what he learned from his television and movie days and applying it to the written word and to the speaking stage and he joins us to share all that and more on this edition of The Art of Charm. More About This Show: By most accounts, Michael achieved success in his acting career: he was being cast on multiple top TV shows and landing roles in hit movies. But it wasn't working for him, and he got out of the "biz". Looking back on it now, he says he was impatient and didn't do the work he needed to do to get those juicy roles he really wanted. He'll also tell you doing this was his own form of self-sabotage; he shot himself in the foot with a poor attitude. And that poor attitude was his way of controlling the outcome. He was so passionate about being a great actor that he was afraid if he really went for it and didn't get it, he'd have failed. To avoid that, he simply made up excuses and didn't do the necessary work to get the roles he wanted the most. Michael's learned from that time in his life, and today he leaves everything he has in the room or on the stage when he speaks. He is done pretending he doesn't care anymore, now people know how much he's going to give. And acting actually helps him do so. He says he does this (and you can too) by amplifying different parts of his personality so he can develop a character appropriate for particular scenes. He understands the backstory, the situation, the conflict and the resolution; and by doing so, he can increase the conflict in a positive way. In other words, he allows himself to become the person he needs to be and to risk what needs to be risked to achieve his goals. He knows the more risk taken, the more profound the experience of achieving that goal. The finer details of this show include: Where did the concepts in Book Yourself Solid originally come from? The two reasons he is called "the uncommonly honest author". What's the key to the roles we play in life? The first rule of improv: what is it and why should you care? Why he'll never hire someone who plays the devil's advocate. And so much more! How do you take greater and greater risks to raise the stakes in your own life? How do you reach that resolution and fulfill on your goals? By making really big, public promises. If you don't make big promises and don't fulfill them, nothing happens. The risk is all in that promise. no matter what you do for a living. If you make a promise that is just bigger than you think you can deliver, then you're in an exciting and compelling place. Now you'll have to reach up to deliver on that the promise you made. And when you do, you'll be center stage. And this applies to every area of your life: relationships, business, all of it. Michael says you stay center stage by adopting the first rule of improv: always be a "yes and" person. What he means by that is keeping the energy of a situation alive. Don't be a naysayer, a doubter or play devil's advocate. If you think someone's idea or new concept is crazy, there's a way to help them critically think about it without raining on their parade. And it all starts with saying "yes and". Is that the same as being a "yes man"? No, according to Michael. There's a difference between being a "yes and" person and being a "yes man". If you're simply a "yes man" (or woman), you go along with anything in any scenario. If you're a "yes and" person you jump into the energy of the situation and keep it moving forward, while still being aware of what's happening around you. That's where things get interesting in life! One final topic we discuss is Michael's eating disorder and how it spurred his growth and his ability to connect with others. For twenty years, he was a compulsive binge eater who managed to hide his secret. Til one day he had had enough. He was done; he would no longer eat his "trigger" foods and that was that. From that day forward, his life changed. His income doubled that year because he wasn't playing small by hiding out. He also noticed a rather interesting occurrence: when he would share something personal about himself (like his eating disorder) with others, in return they would be vulnerable and open up to him. It was that turning point that showed him the true strength in vulnerability and how being open and candid allows you to authentically connect with others. You instantly become more relatable and trustworthy, with everyone in every setting. On the show today, he had one final message to share with you: keep thinking big about who you are and what you offer the world; together we can do a lot more for the world than we can do alone. Please join me in thanking him for being a part of The Art of Charm, and let him know you heard his message loud and clear. When I first went to work for myself a couple of years ago, one of the first books I read was Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port. I don't think I could have picked a better book to read upon embarking on the journey of entrepreneurship. Out of all the various business books presenting different coaching models available on the market today, Michael's book was perfect. It covers how service professionals can develop their own personal brand, talk about what it is they do in the right way, build trust and credibility, price their services, and promote themselves without sounding like Donald Trump. It's one of the few books that I have read where I felt like I had to read it at the kitchen table with a notepad next to me, because I was taking so many notes. I didn't think Michael could improve on that book, but it happened. Enter Book Yourself Solid Illustrated.? Working with my guest in this episode of the podcast, Jocelyn Wallace, the pair tore up the original version and distilled it to its essence. I loved the new version as much, if not more, than the original version.
