This week, Donald Macleod marks the beginning of the season of Advent by exploring Christmas music and stories from the Middle Ages. Christmas celebrations encompassed a great variety of colourful traditions and musical occasions during medieval times. Peasants and nobles alike could look forward to many weeks of festivities, from Advent at the start of December, right through to Candlemas on 2nd February. Some of those customs we still recognise and celebrate today. Many are now lost or significantly altered. Donald is joined by early music expert, William Lyons, to examine how Christmas might have felt and sounded to our medieval ancestors.Music Featured: Gaudete Personent hodie; Gaudete; Omnis mundus jucundetur Perotin: Alleluia Nativitas Miri it is while sumer ilast Blowe, Northerne Wynd (arr. The first thing they did in 1922 was to produce a sidebar on the side of a motorbike." The book details the brand in the trying economic times leading up to World War II. It also covers the resetting of Jaguar during England's bleak postwar years, first with its XK120, then the XK140 and XK150. As the press information states, the new volumes also chronicle sporting saloons (i.e., sedans) like the Mark 2 and Mark X standards for four-door luxury in the 1950s and 1960s. And it reports on the unveiling of the E-Type in 1961, the vehicle often cited as the most beautiful car ever made. "I accepted the commission to do it because I thought there was a fantastic story to tell there, not just of the cars but of the people," says Giles. While Giles has a great appreciation for Jaguar, he doesn't own a new or used model. But he's driven many. "The original XJ6 is just an amazing pinnacle of Jaguar did," Giles says of his favorite of the manufacturer's varied offering. "It was such an extraordinary comprise between the handling of the car and the ride comfort. It's amazing how they did it. I just love driving old XJ6s. "At the time, they were like nothing else and now they continue to feel like that. It's hard to express if you haven't driven one. They're very soothing and they make you feel very proud." Donald Macleod is joined by William Lyons to explore Guillaume Dufay's life and music. The beauty, originality and technical mastery of Guillaume Dufay’s music illustrate why the Florentine ruler Piero de’Medici gave him the epithet “the greatest ornament of our age”. Undoubtedly he is one of the 15th century’s most distinctive voices. He was in his late 70s by the time he died in 1474; a long life by medieval standards. His outstanding talent transported him from an uncertain start in life as the illegitimate son of a servant and an unknown man, to being a musician who was feted at court, and respected by the church and the papacy alike. As his fame spread across Europe, he commanded the admiration of his fellow composers, influencing not only his direct contemporaries but also the generation of composers who succeeded him, among them Johannes Ockeghem. Donald Macleod is joined by William Lyons, a historical music researcher and the founder of the ensemble The Dufay Collective. Pulling together what’s known about Dufay, across the episode, they build a picture of the man behind this illustrious reputation, examine the key relationships he fostered, and consider how his music flourished as he navigated the turbulent political currents of the age. The Elizabethan Dance Band: Lucie Skeaping is joined by William Lyons to explore music for the Broken Consort, an ensemble heard at dances and theatre productions, and for which Thomas Morley compiled a rarely-heard repertory.
Director of The Dufay Collective, William Lyons, celebrates the life and work of one of his musical heroes - early music specialist, historian, multi-instrumentalist, broadcaster and pioneer David Munrow, who took his own life in 1976 during a state of depression at the age of just 33. Munrow perhaps did more than anyone else in the second half of the 20th century to popularise early music in Great Britain, despite a career lasting barely ten years. This was underscored when the Voyager space probe committee selected one of his recordings to be carried on it as part of the Voyager Golden Record. He left behind him not only his recordings but a large collection of musical instruments. The Munrow Archive at the Royal Academy of Music holds a collection of his letters, papers, TV scripts, scores, musical compositions and books, which is accessible to the public.
