Michael Freedman joins Nathan on Thinking LSAT to share his story as a trial lawyer in some of the nation's most high-profile criminal cases. Along the way, he shares candid advice for law students about finding their path, building experience, and starting a firm. Michael emphasizes the importance of treating law school like a job, embracing trial work, and nurturing every professional relationship.4:00 – UC HastingsMichael recalls feeling bored during his 1L year but loving 2L because he finally began interacting with real lawyers. Nathan encourages students to approach law school the way Michael did. Michael offers two practical tips for success: treat law school like a 9-to-5 job and intentionally build life balance outside of school.27:10 – Federal Clerkship and Government PositionDespite participating in OCI, Michael didn't land a Big Law job. Instead, he worked during law school for a trial lawyer focused on white-collar defense, which helped him confirm his passion for criminal trial work. The client relationship aspect deeply appealed to him, influencing his decision to clerk after graduation. He landed a prestigious clerkship on the Ninth Circuit. While many of his peers moved into Big Law after clerking, Michael opted for a government role to gain more courtroom experience. When he eventually reached the typical endpoint for federal positions, he chose to start his firm rather than join another existing one.27:23 – Starting the Freedman FirmTo build his practice, Michael accepted every case, no matter the size, emphasizing that no case was too small in those early days. He believes that founding a firm requires an entrepreneurial mindset—one must enjoy thinking about how to acquire clients, how to handle hiring, and how to manage payroll. He later brought on another partner to help handle larger, more demanding cases.33:41 – Big Profile CasesMichael's work eventually led to invitations to co-counsel on major white-collar criminal cases, including representing Bill Cosby, working on R. Kelly's trial, and participating in Harvey Weinstein's appeal. Much of this work was in collaboration with Jennifer Bonjean, a highly respected trial attorney based in Chicago. These opportunities didn't happen by accident. They stemmed from years of deliberate effort in building strong professional relationships. Michael treats his referral sources like clients themselves, ensuring they're proud to be associated with his work and satisfied with the results he delivers.40:41 – Should Our Students Do What You Do?Michael poses a fundamental question to students: Do you know what kind of lawyer you want to be? He encourages students to take advantage of every opportunity to gain hands-on experience. Law firms require a diverse range of personalities and backgrounds to serve their clients effectively. He urges students to attend court and introduce themselves to lawyers, not just to network, but to genuinely learn. A sincere interest in the work can lead to meaningful opportunities.
Spraying for powdery mildew can be ~25% of the cost of farming a vineyard and be one of the key elements of a grower's carbon footprint. Sarah Placella, Founder and CEO of Root Applied Sciences, has taken her deep research in microbes and created a data-driven solution to monitor the air for mildew and spray only when needed. Root can cut ~5 sprays per season, and growers have an average 5x ROI using the system. Today, we are excited to share a conversation between Berkeley Law 3L student Eric Ahern and Audrey Mitchell, a current fellow with Berkeley's AI Policy Hub and a 2L student here. Audrey brings a unique interdisciplinary perspective to the conversation around AI and the future of litigation, combining her background in STEM with legal experience in patent litigation and public interest tech law. At Berkeley's AI Policy Hub, Audrey has been leading innovative research on how artificial intelligence is reshaping civil and criminal litigation—and whether our current legal rules are equipped to keep up. In this episode, we will explore the impact of AI-generated evidence on courtroom procedure, how judges are grappling with issues like authentication and bias, and why procedural safeguards—like discovery and transparency—matter more than ever in the age of machine-generated proof. This episode will be Part I of a two-part series on AI and rules of evidence. Whether you're a technologist, a lawyer, or simply curious about how the law is adapting to AI, this series will offer an accessible and thought-provoking look into the legal system's evolving relationship with artificial intelligence. We hope you enjoy the podcast!

Rasul is a 2L at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. Rasul's journey is one of the best this podcast has ever had to offer. From tire technician to College Valedictorian and Rhodes Scholar finalist, and now a rising 2L and an upcoming 3L Class President at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.Rasul and I started before he arrived at college. Being an average High School Student, Rasul did not have many intentions of attending college. Inspired by a coworker at BJ's, he would begin his search. After finding out a scholarship could get him to Prince George's Community College for free, he would start his unforgettable journey. Following his time at Prince George's, Rasul finished his time at Towson University, being top 1% of his class, President of numerous organizations, a Rhodes Scholar finalist, and finally, Valedictorian Speaker. We then moved to his introduction into Law School, his 1L year, which he thoroughly enjoyed. It was a thought-provoking experience and a testament to the hard work he had accomplished in the 4 years before it. Even with the large workload, Rasul would become 1L Class President and follow his intellectual curiosity, speaking on the many internships he has held thus far. This episode with Rasul is one of my favorites of all time, full of amazing stories and a testament to pulling yourself up by the bootstraps and not limiting yourself, no matter what. ENTREVISTA A BORJA QUIROGA1. Quién debería y quién no debería tomarlos?

Zak is a 2L at Widener Delaware Law, and currently works as the Founder of Balancing the Scales. Zak's journey is a testament to not only taking opportunities, but making your own! Zak and I start prior to his arrival to Delaware Law, where Zak would participate in fascinating Pre-Law programs, being Eversheds Sutherland Scholar, as well as an Afro Scholar at Kirkland Ellis. These experiences would lay the foundations for his interest in Law School, as well as what he would want to do in the future, as they touched on all areas of the Law, with a wealth of experience. We then moved to Zak's first year of Law School, where it was extremely difficult but by leveraging the mentors and connections from the Pre-Law programs it allowed him to get a better understanding of the material. Zak would key in on how vital setting and sticking to your expectations and goals is in terms of grades. Zak would be in the top of his class, and they directly aligned to the action steps he was taking. During spring semester of his 1L year, after finding a lack of resources for pre-law and law students alike, Zak would take the initiative and found Balancing the Scales, a passion project and brainchild of Zak as he sought to "level the playing field" by increasing access to information and resources for diverse and first-generation law students. Through webinars, mentorship, networking events, and scholarship opportunities, the Balance The Scales platform is intended to do exactly what its name suggests. Finally, we went through Zak's internships and their impact on his future plans, finding areas that are interesting and intellectually challenging. Zak suggests to those going to Law School and those in it to send emails to professionals and build out a network of veteran lawyers to help and support them through their journey. This episode with Zak further shows how important it is to take the initiative and create opportunities for yourself that will pay dividends for the rest of your life! The 6-speed swapped Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series is finally here, and Jason drove it! Derek's – or rather OTS's – OEM-grade 6-speed manual CLK63 Black Series by Kwiek Classics is done, and Jason and Derek get behind the wheel to review the car that AMG should've built all along. Enthusiasts around the world have never had a chance to interact directly with AMG's only clean-sheet engine, the M156 – a monster 6.2L, 32-valve, DOHC, cross-plane V8 making 500 horsepower for the CLK63 Black Series. But now, thanks to Matt Kwiek at Kwiek Classics, we finally can! And it's why Derek and his business partners at OTS bought one for Matt to manual swap using OEM Mercedes-Benz parts. The swap is done, and the car is here in the Bay Area where the Carmudgeons got to row the gears in AMG's widebody beast of the noughties. By junking the recalcitrant automatic transmission, the car is transformed into the athlete its flared fenders promise it to be. Combine the manual trans with the factory triple-adjustable dampers (which feel like they're full of sand in its current track configuration, though according to Jason are magical with the settings Mercedes used at the launch event) and the CLK63 Black Series becomes a car that even the most curmudgeonly enthusiast will struggle to come up with an excuse not to buy. As familiar and confidence-inspiring as the best M cars like E36 and E46 M3, and with an engine more engaging and experiential than the likes of the E39 M5. Even better to drive than a V8 Vantage and a Lexus LFA. Unlike typical 3-pedal swaps that lend themselves to terrible throttle mapping (see: Pagani Zonda), this one is a 9 out of 10, and an easy “marry” over a plethora of Ferraris: Testarossa, 355, 550 – even a Porsche 997 GT3. After the AMG, we dive into Jason's recent dyno day at Chuckles Garage in NorCal, where Jason managed to take 3 spots on the dyno's leaderboard for least horsepower (not including Jason, who can put down 500 watts). Jason got power numbers on his E31 BMW 850CSi, the Rover SD1 3500 V8, and the Honda Beat. Plus a friend brings along a Euro-spec 850CSi for comparison. Using some Turner Motorsport chips for the dual-ECU S70 850CSi motor, in conjunction with some Ferrari 599 mufflers, Jason's CSi managed to beat the Euro car at 304 rear wheel horsepower. But even with Ferrari exhaust, the 850 still needs help in the sound department. Luckily, @czechmate_e30 is working with a fabricator to make a set of stepped headers for BMW V12s! Then, with fresh dyno numbers in hand, Jason combines the data with the power figures from the rest of his fleet, and indexes them by percentage of peak power versus percentage of peak RPM. The resulting graph provides an excellent visualization as to where and how each of his car's engines makes their power. Science! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Joy is a 2L at The University of Texas School of Law. Joy's journey is still underway, she offers insights about Law School, and the process of it, while they are fresh in the mind. Joy and I started prior to Law School, during her time at Baylor University. She would speak on her experience of being a foreign service officer at the U.S. Department of State, where she gained a ton of people skills and vastly improved her public speaking ability, talking in front of crowds, large and small. This experience she felt was essential for her professional life going forward, laying the foundations for skills she still uses today. We then spoke about her pre-law legal internship at Faith and Life Wellness, which was a mix of her passion and a view into what the law is like. Through this experience, she learned some foundational legal skills and that this particular sector would not be one she would return to, further showing the importance of trying out a diverse number of legal internships and clerkships. Finally, we spoke about her Law School experience thus far. Speaking on the first year, Joy would love her time, excited to be around people who have a wealth of knowledge and ambition, while also having a surreal experience just being there. She would concede that it was an information overload, but that did not stop her from having amazing success. We would then speak about how important mentorship has been for her through her two years at The University of Texas School of Law, noting that you can't get anywhere on your own, and that even if it seems scary at first, seeking people pays amazing dividends over time. Joy's experience so far, represents that taking a chance on Law School and exploring its possibilities can truly be a life-changing experience! Joseph is a 2L at Ohio Northern University College of Law and works as a Legal Assistant at Swartz, Culleton, and Ferris. Joseph's journey to Law School is full of twists, turns, and amazing insights! Joseph and I start at his graduation from Wyoming Catholic College where he graduated with a degree in Liberal Arts. We would discuss his experience at Lowes, which offered extremely valuable people skills and laid the foundations for skills he still uses to this day, further offering the importance of those odd jobs. We then spoke about his 2 years at NJM Insurance Group where Joseph would be taking up to 100 phone calls a day. As well it was also a job through LinkedIn, showing how important it is to put yourself out there. Joesph also gained new perspectives and got a peek into the insurance world. We then moved to Joseph's entry into Ohio Northern University College of Law. We spoke about what went into his decision to enter law school and the important mentors he had along the way. Joseph would speak about his first year of law school, which he both loved and hated. He loved the school part but felt it was socially difficult due to its competitive nature. He gives the advice to treat it like a job. Finally, Joseph and I spoke about the internships he has held along the way, finding the specialization he wants to do through them. Joseph would also harp on the idea of avoiding the social problems and drama that come with law school, and always take the opportunity to talk to those not a part of the Law School, to take your mind off things. This episode with Joseph is an episode full of intelligent insights, and finding the systems, tools, and strategies that work for you, all through the power of action! Shmuel is a 2L at Chicago-Kent College of Law and works as an Intern at the Illinois Office of the State Attorney's Appellate Prosecutor. Shmuel's journey to the Law is just starting, but it's been nothing short of living the dream thus far! Shmuel and I start before he arrives at Law School. It was High School and Shmuel Applied and gained an internship at the Los Angeles County District Attorney. Being so young as an intern, he would become a sponge to all that he was learning, watching trials, and learning from his bosses, keeping a close eye on everything that went on. From that experience, he knew going forward, going to Law School was his dream. He would return to the same District Attorney's office for 2 out of the 3 next summers, before heading off to Touro College Los Angeles. During his time there, he would hold an additional file clerkship as well as work as a teacher's assistant at the same school he attended, for the same teacher he had. For Shmuel, this experience delivered on building those all-important soft skills, communication skills, and especially with 4th graders, having a ton of patience. We then moved to his entry into Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he would be shocked by the fact that he made it to Law School, describing it as living the dream! He would love the first year as well, having interesting material to work with, and the chance to focus solely on school. Shmuel would describe the various internships, clerkships, and externships he held throughout the last 2 years, up until the present day. One clerkship, in particular, was found through this podcast, as Shmuel would work for former guest, Yisrael Gelb, at Gelb Law APC. Shmuel would find Yisrael through this podcast, meet with him, and then many months later, would see Yisrael was looking for employees, and would reach out leading to an eventual hire, a prime example of the power of networking! Finally, Shmuel would speak about how his faith would play an impact on his life thus far, allowing for something to fall back on when all is lost, and an opportunity to look at the big picture, because in the end, it all works out for the better, no matter what. This episode with Shmuel is a testament to chasing your dreams, and exploring one's interests with full strength! Andrew is a current 2L at Ohio Northern University College of Law. Andrew's journey is far from linear, going down multiple avenues before finally entering the doors of Law School. Andrew and I started years before he stepped into a Law School classroom. He would graduate from Malone University and begin to pursue working in Public policy and government. He held a plethora of internships and jobs but also hit some roadblocks along the way. Andrew would miss out on a fellowship and not get two positions, but he constantly sent follow-ups and thank you's to those missed opportunities, which would lead to more opportunities for him. After having to start from scratch, and begin to bounce from Odd Job to odd job, Andrew finally decided it was time to head off to Law School. And indeed he did, landing himself at Ohio Northern University Claude Pettit College of Law. Throughout the entire conversation, Andrew spoke heavily about how faith played a role in his life, through all the ups and downs, as well as throughout Law School thus far. Finally, Andrew and I spoke about his first year, which was challenging, with an environment of survival and advancement. After years of not being in school, it was a huge adjustment to the school environment. Andrew would pick up a ton of newfound techniques that would propel him to Law School success, such as using a whiteboard for studying, recording himself on the topics for that end of the semester's test, and even using one of our sponsors, Lisa Blassers Pre-recorded course (lisablasser.com, Code LSOSNATE10 at checkout) to supplement his Law School Experience. Andrew's Journey represents the tagline of this podcast: there is no straight path to the Law or Law School, only your unique journey. Andrew's is one of the most unique I have come across. In this powerful episode, we sit down with Vincent O'Neil, a 2L at Albany Law School, to hear his remarkable story of resilience and transformation. Growing up in Wisconsin, Vincent had what he calls a "typical middle-class upbringing" but struggled with addiction and legal troubles starting at age 13. After years of battling substance abuse, multiple stints in jail, and trying to find his footing, Vincent reached a turning point. Now, four years sober, Vincent reflects on the pivotal moments that led him to turn his life around, including the decision to move to Nevada with his parents and ultimately pursue a law degree. He shares how his past shaped his passion for justice and how he plans to use his experiences to make a difference in the world. Tune in to hear how Vincent's journey from addiction to law school is not just a story of overcoming obstacles, but of finding hope and purpose in the most unexpected places. We felt infinite gratitude to not feel infinite stomach acid before this celebration episode! The main training topic was Kilian Jornet's training to win Sierre Zinal, the Olympics of trail running. The GOAT described his weekly volume, approach to training structure, and all of his workouts. We broke down what it means for everyone else! We also talked about a new study on double threshold workouts. The authors sought to answer a novel question: how do stress responses differ when a big workout is split into two parts in the AM and PM versus when it is conducted all at once? If this study was any more Norwegian, it would be listening to weird pop music and telling us that the secret is not keeping score in youth sports. And this one was full of fun topics! Other topics: the hilarious adversity we faced in the Leadville 100 taper, why our baby is tougher than we are, when specificity training is taken too far, cross training for aerobic development, using the uphill treadmill for threshold training, how fast to run strides, a coach in politics, Fiona O'Keefe and the decision to race with health concerns, concerning parent heart rate at the Olympics, Courtney Dauwalter motivating the U.S. Women's Soccer team, Cole Hocker's gold medal pass on the inside, Sifan Hassan's bonkers race schedule, lots more Olympics thoughts, and hot takes. Do you want to know one listener's way to engage their glutes? Stick around to the end of the episode. PTs don't want you to know this one big secret! We love you all! HUZZAH!
