Most of us know the feeling — the words left our mouth before we thought them through, and the moment they landed we wished we could pull them back. A sharp remark in an argument, a piece of gossip shared too freely, a heated message sent before we took a breath. Words carry tremendous power to encourage and to damage, and the gap between the two is often just a moment of pause we did not take. Psalm 141:3-4 is one of David's most relatable prayers: set a guard over my mouth, Lord, keep watch over the door of my lips. He was not asking God to edit his vocabulary — he was asking for spiritual security over his speech, recognizing that he could not perfectly guard his own mouth and needed the Creator of language to step in. And then he connected the mouth to the heart. Keeping words pure requires keeping the heart from being drawn to what is evil — the "delicacies" of winning an argument with a sharp remark, of feeling superior through gossip, of enjoying mean-spirited humor at someone else's expense. Our words reveal what is happening in our souls. When we are stressed, hurt, or self-righteous, unwise words begin to leak. The solution is not just better manners or trying harder next time. It is inviting the Holy Spirit to purify what is underneath — cultivating kindness, gentleness, and self-control from the inside out, so that what overflows from our lips is grace rather than damage. Stress, hurt, self-righteousness, and pride all tend to leak out through what we say. Addressing the condition of the heart is the only lasting solution to an unguarded mouth. We need more than better manners — we need the Holy Spirit's help. Trying harder to control our words without inviting God into the process is a strategy that will eventually fail. His Spirit is what cultivates the fruit of kindness, gentleness, and self-control that produces wiser speech. The "delicacies" David warns against are subtle and socially rewarded. Winning an argument with a sharp remark, bonding over gossip, enjoying humor at someone else's expense — these feel satisfying in the moment and are celebrated in our culture. That is precisely what makes them dangerous. Ask God to stand guard before you enter a conversation. Before a meeting, a family dinner, a group chat, or a difficult exchange — a moment of prayer asking God to guide your words changes the posture you bring to what follows. Words used for positive purposes build relationships and reflect God's character. When we let God guard the door of our lips, the people around us begin to notice that something different is at work in our lives. That is a testimony in itself. A Prayer for You Today Dear God, I know my words have the power to help or hurt people. I confess that I do not always choose them well — too often I react to my emotions rather than stopping to think about what would actually be wise. Please set a guard over my mouth and keep watch over the door of my lips. When I am tempted to complain, direct my attention to Your blessings. When I am tempted to gossip or speak poorly of others, remind me that You created them in Your image and they are worthy of love and respect. Pull my affections away from the delicacies of negativity and cynicism, and fill my soul with so much of Your love that what overflows from my words is grace and encouragement. The city of Corinth was a place of commerce. Nobody went there except to be successful. It was built from scratch just a few decades before Paul's letter was written. There were not old families and traditions. This was a place that attracted an unusually resourceful, talented, ambitious, intense kind of person. And right into this culture, Paul says, “I don't care how rich or talented you are. If you're irritable, impatient, selfish, self-centered, self-pitying, driven and anxious, you have nothing. Don't say, ‘I just have a few personal issues to deal with.' You have nothing.” Paul says character is everything. And so what is inner love and joy? What is the inner supernatural change in character that God can bring? In 1 Corinthians 13, we see 1) two things that heart character is not, and 2) one thing that it is. The enemy does not need us in open rebellion to keep us ineffective. Distracted and scattered is enough. If he cannot make us bad, he will make us busy — busy enough that the two things that matter most get quietly crowded out by the many things that feel urgent. Martha was not doing anything wrong, exactly. She was serving, working, being the responsible adult in the room when Jesus was visiting. But Jesus saw beneath the activity to the real problem: she was worried and upset about many things. The work was not the issue — the weight she was carrying underneath it was. Mary had chosen the one thing: sitting present with Jesus, single-hearted and unhurried. Jesus said that what Mary chose could never be taken from her. The things Martha was scrambling to accomplish would pass. The one thing Mary chose would not. The answer to a busy season is not always a less busy season. Sometimes seasons are simply full. The answer is a protected heart in the middle of the fullness — a decision made before the day scatters us that many things will not be allowed to crowd out the one thing. Busyness is one of his most effective tools, not because it is sinful, but because it quietly crowds out the two things that matter most: loving God and loving people. Jesus did not scold Martha for working — He called out what was underneath it. She was carrying so many good things that she had lost sight of the most important thing. The problem was not the activity. It was the worry and upset driving it. What Mary chose cannot be taken away — what Martha was scrambling for will pass. Everything on our to-do lists is temporary. Sitting with Jesus, present and single-hearted, is the only thing that carries eternal weight. The answer to a busy season is a protected heart, not necessarily a less busy season. Some seasons are simply fuller than others. The decision to guard the one thing must be made before the day begins, not after it has already scattered our attention. People are not interruptions — people are the point. When we treat the people in front of us as obstacles to our productivity rather than the very reason we are doing any of it, we have lost the thread that holds everything together. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, it is a busy and noisy season. I need You to do what I cannot do on my own. Quiet my heart to focus on You. Gather up the scattered pieces of my attention and pull them back to You. I have let many things crowd out the one thing, and I do not want to be too busy to sit at Your feet. I do not want to treat people like interruptions when people are the point. Lord, guard my heart today. When I am pulled in a million directions, remind me that only one thing is needed. The French town of Lourdes is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics – this year even welcoming the Pope. This shrine in the Pyrenees Mountains is the site of miracles and Christian fervour, where the young shepherdess Bernadette Soubirous saw 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary and where many people believe they have been miraculously healed. The Feast of the Assumption is the most important date in the Lourdes calendar, when tens of thousands travel from all over the world, to drink and wash in the shrine's water, and sing and pray in huge candle-lit processions behind the white statue of the Virgin Mary. John Laurenson has joined them to hear stories of the faithful, and to meet a woman whose job description is unique in the world. Dr Giana Monami investigates miracles. Her ‘Bureau de Constatation' brings the cold analysis of science to claims of instant, otherwise-inexplicable, permanent healings. There have been 72 so far. Dr Monami talks about her investigations and the other miracles that happen here. Those that are healed in their hearts. That find God. That end addictions. So, where are you from? Where do you claim citizenship? Wherever your citizenship is, is where you belong. You may travel other places, but home is always where your citizenship is. Think about how where you are from has made a radical difference in your life. How different you would be if you were from somewhere else. You would talk different. You would have totally different customs. Your view on the world would likely be different. What you know is what you know, and to you it’s what is normal. Some cultures eat with their hands. Other cultures would consider you downright barbaric if you dug into your bowl without a spoon or fork. Some cultures kiss when they meet – for others that’s just weird. In some cultures you take off your shoes before you enter someone’s home – but not everyone was taught that. We’re not being rude, we’re just different. Our culture shapes what feels normal. With that perspective, think about what Paul says in Philippians 3:20, “But we are citizens of heaven.” As a follower of Jesus, you’ve been set apart and your citizenship has changed. You’re not from here. You actually don’t even belong here. Your culture has changed and what used to be normal is no longer normal to you. God has been doing a work in you, changing your identity and reassigning your citizenship. You’re now a member of the Kingdom of Heaven. You know what that means – that means everything is changing for you. You’re undergoing a radical shift. It’s why you just can’t do the things you used to do and feel the way you once did. It’s why you now desire such different things. Sis, you’re not from here! You belong to a different culture. Yesterday I met a woman with a beautiful accent. I knew she was from somewhere very different than me. I asked and she said South Africa. Oh, everything she said just sounded so incredibly fancy to me. I really just wanted to have tea with her. And really, as citizens of HEAVEN, that’s the way it should be with us. We should sound different when we talk to people who don’t yet have their citizenship in Heaven. We should be attractive, intriguing, inviting, irresistible. Girls, we are here representing Heaven – make everyone want to come visit! And once they visit, they will want to stay! The girls from the Kingdom of God do things differently than the rest of the world. Instead of looking out for ourselves, we’re out here loving the heck out of our neighbors. We’re refusing offense, resisting bitterness, and continually choosing forgiveness. We’re stepping down from pedestals, canceling the performance, and learning to embrace humility. Our priorities have shifted from, “What can I get?” to, “What can I give?” Kingdom girls walk in victory through surrender. Now, what a radically uncommon concept that is! In every other kingdom, surrender means defeat. If you wave that white flag, you’re giving up. You’ve lost. But in the Kingdom of God, surrender is not losing—it’s winning. Surrender is the highest act of trust. It’s laying down your need to control, your need to be right, your need to be seen, your need to win, and saying, “Jesus, I trust You more than I trust myself.” Paul tells us in verse 19 about the world culture. “Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.” Welp, can’t you see how that was you? I was that person – weren’t you too? What I wanted was all I craved. I made my desires my god, my goal, my focus. That’s natural in the world. Every marketing strategy tells you get what you want, and what you want is what they have to sell you. Wake up, Sis – we have to remember we are different! We don’t belong here so we can’t fall into that culture. We belong to Heaven and in the Kingdom of Heaven our King is our God. Paul says when we are in the world’s culture, we brag about shameful things. Do you want to really see that? Ask God to open your eyes to see what that looks like. Then, scroll through your facebook memories and look at your posts from past years. I make my own self wanna gag! The things I used to brag about are shameful. The photos I used to post just hoping someone would see me. I’m embarrassed for myself. It didn’t used to bother me at all, but my citizenship has changed. How about yours? When you finally know where you really belong, there’s a shift because you realize you no longer have to prove your worth. You’re a citizen of Heaven! World culture thinks primarily about this life—what’s happening here, what’s happening now, what we can have, accomplish, experience, and enjoy in this moment. But Kingdom girls remember that this life is only a tiny fraction of our existence, with eternity stretching out before us. So where are your thoughts? Are they consumed with what is happening here, or anchored in what is coming there? Are you making decisions based only on what feels good right now, or are you considering what matters forever? Because when you know you’re a citizen of heaven, eternity changes the way you live today. Suddenly, what looked so important yesterday may not seem nearly as important anymore. The applause fades. The possessions lose their grip. The need to prove yourself starts to loosen. And the things that last forever begin to matter a whole lot more. Girl, don’t let a temporary world distract you from an eternal Kingdom. You belong somewhere bigger than here. Your circumstances are temporary. Your citizenship is eternal. You are here to represent the place you belong to. So if heaven is your home, your life should increasingly look like the King you belong to. You belong where Jesus is, so his way becomes your way. Jesus says to pray like this, “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Have you ever thought about what that means as an action plan for you? You’re walking out God’s kingdom here on earth. You’re bringing the culture of heaven into this world where God has temporarily placed you. You’re living here, but you belong there. You have an earthly address, but a heavenly identity. You participate in this world, but you don’t have to be shaped by this world. You represent another Kingdom. And everywhere you go, you get to give people a little glimpse of what your home is like. Went over some developments on the Mormon front, the fact that Mormonism really is splintering fast into self-prophet groups with all sorts of different views and beliefs. We also looked at a statement posted by Leighton Flowers (written by someone else) that said that if Judas or Pilate had "repented" that God could have found "someone else." We thought through what that would mean and realized that's just Open Theism wearing a big nose and a fake mustache. Finally at the end I told everyone who didn't want something personal to tune out, and then I told the story of how I have been using Claude, the AI, to create programs that are allowing me to record my workouts and get a better idea of how hard I am lifting, etc. Just a little encouragement for my fellow aging athletes.
