Not much is known about the background of the prophet Hosea, save what is mentioned in this record of his prophecies. By referencing the kings under which he prophesied, we can see that his ministry of prophecy lasted around 40 years. Like Amos, Hosea spoke to the nation of Israel, often referenced as “Ephraim” in this book, under a time of lavish wealth and disparate poverty. Israel was being unfaithful to their God, and like the unfaithful nation the Lord has committed himself to love, Hosea is commanded to marry an unfaithful woman. Hosea's pursuit of his unfaithful wife serves a parallel to God's pursuit of unfaithful Israel. Remember, He heals, forgives, redeems, crowns you with love, satisfies you, renews your strength, vindicates the oppressed, and makes His ways known. When you speak to your soul like this, something happens—your gaze shifts. The focus moves off yourself and onto Him, off your failures or successes, and back to what God has done and who He is. This is what gospel talk is: speaking the good news, the truth of God's mercy, grace, and love, right into the roots of your life. Every day, we need this soul talk. We need to rehearse the gospel, to remind ourselves, to speak these truths not only to our own hearts but over each other—over our families, our friends, our churches, our coworkers. Turn your discouragement, your fear, your shame into opportunity for gospel talk: list out the ways God has shown you mercy and grace. Write them down. Reread Psalm 103. Make it your habit, letting the good news work its way deep in you. This is a prayer I have for my own soul. It's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son—and it's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. John 11:19–20The Gospel for today's Memorial begins with grief. Grief brings the community together and prepares us for the divine drama to unfold. As Jesus approaches the house, He is met with sorrow, yet He is ready to transform it into a house of hope and joy.Martha, Mary, and Lazarus were siblings and close friends of Jesus. Jesus and His disciples visited their home on multiple occasions and received their generous hospitality. Though little is known about Lazarus' personality, the characteristics of Martha and Mary are more clearly revealed through their interactions with our Lord. Martha is often portrayed as active, practical, and hospitable. She speaks directly and openly, even in her grief, professing her faith in Jesus as “the Christ, the Son of God.” Her words and actions show a heart of deep faith, even when she does not yet understand the full mystery unfolding before her. Mary, on the other hand, is more contemplative and reserved. She is the one who sat at the feet of Jesus, listening to His words while Martha served. In this Gospel scene, she remains at home, likely immersed in silent sorrow. Yet later, when she encounters Jesus, she too will express deep faith and devotion—falling at His feet in tears.Together, these sisters reveal different dimensions of discipleship: the active and the contemplative, the spoken and the silent, the service of love and the adoration of the heart. Each responded to Jesus in her own way, and both were deeply loved by Him. Likewise, our Lord welcomes our personalities, griefs, and strengths. Whether we are more like Martha or Mary, Jesus invites us to draw near to Him and to trust that He is “the Resurrection and the Life.”Though little is known about Lazarus, we do know that he was greatly loved by Jesus. When Jesus arrived at Lazarus' tomb, He was deeply moved: “And Jesus wept” (John 11:35). This is the shortest verse in Scripture, yet one of the most profound. The raising of Lazarus from the dead was a prefiguration of Jesus' own Resurrection and a powerful sign of His divine authority over death. Lazarus became a living witness to Christ's power, and his very presence later stirred such amazement that the chief priests plotted to kill him (cf. John 12:10–11). In this way, Lazarus stands as a silent but radiant sign of hope: one who passed through the darkness of death and was called forth by the voice of the Son of God. His story reminds us that even in our tombs of suffering, despair, or sin, Jesus comes to call us forth to new life.These siblings also reveal the humanity of Christ. He shared a friendship with them, spent time with them, listened to them, ate, received their love, and affected their lives. In these siblings we are given a glimpse of Jesus' tender love for us—personal, relational, and deeply human. Their home was a place where Jesus found rest and companionship amid His public ministry. Their story reminds us that our Lord desires not only our worship but also our friendship. He wishes to dwell in the home of our hearts, to share in our joys and sorrows, and to walk with us through every moment of life. In their closeness to Jesus, these three saints show us that holiness is not distant or abstract, but discovered in the context of daily life, hospitality, and sincere faith.Reflect today on the tender love Jesus had for this saintly family. See yourself and your own earthly family in them. Know that Jesus desires to dwell in your home, to relate with you personally, and to make your home a sanctuary of His abiding presence. Welcome Him in. Like Martha, serve Him with generosity. Like Mary, sit at His feet in loving adoration. And like Lazarus, allow Him to lift your spirit, restore your soul, and call you forth from whatever binds you. Jesus does all of this joyfully—moved with deep compassion, affection, and love for you.My Lord and divine Friend, just as Your Sacred Heart was moved with compassion and holy sorrow at the death of Your friend Lazarus and at the grief of his sisters, so too is Your Heart moved with love for me—even when I fail. As the book of 1 Chronicles comes to a close we're given a look at an assembly of all the leaders of Israel. In this gather, David gives glory to God for his many blessings, and charges Solomon to build the Lord's temple. In so doing, he also makes it clear that, of his many sons, Solomon is to become king, appointed by the Lord God Himself. He passes the plans for the temple on to Solomon and declares that he will be giving his riches to the work of building this place of worship. The leaders and the people of Israel follow suit, and together they amass a great stockpile of wealth. Fear often rises when obstacles threaten the vision God has given us. For example, Jesus told His disciples to go to the other side of the lake by boat, but they allowed the storm to overshadow His promise and questioned whether He cared for them. Their fear exposed a lack of trust in His word rather than the size of the storm. Jesus demonstrated His authority by calming the wind and the waves, reminding them that faith is anchored in who He is, not in favorable circumstances. Listen, and you will find life." He offers to make an everlasting covenant with you, to give you all the unfailing love He promised to David. See how rich and generous the gifts of God are for the hungry and thirsty, for the broken? It's beyond what we can imagine. So often we close our ears to God because we fear. We fear His words of judgment and rejection. But Isaiah calls us to open them wide. Verses 7 and 9 remind us—turn to our God, for He will forgive generously. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways higher than our ways, and His thoughts higher than ours. His ways and His thoughts are far beyond ours—so much grander, so much kinder than we could ever dream. And the generous food that He gives to the hungry—food that opens eyes and minds to His heart and His ways—is His Word. Isaiah 55:11 says, "It is the same with my word. I send it out and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it." All of this becomes an everlasting sign of His power and His love. So look up, thirsty one, and see what God has done. He has sent the final Word—His Son. Open your ears wide and hear God's answer to your thirst, your hunger, your brokenness. It's Jesus, the living Word. Come with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. That's the prayer I have for my own heart, for my soul. That's the prayer I have for my family—for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. Today's message is: “Joyful Return, Insightful Response.” Our core passage today is Luke 10:17-24, on page 1612 of your pew Bibles. The Seventy-Two Return 17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” 18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” 21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. 22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” 23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.” Opening Prayer Father, we come before You today with joy and humility. Thank You for calling ordinary people into Your Kingdom work. Thank You that the name of Jesus is greater than every power of darkness, every accusation of the enemy, and every fear that troubles our hearts. Lord Jesus, help us rejoice in the right things. Teach us to celebrate Your victories without becoming proud of our usefulness. Remind us that our greatest joy is not what we accomplish for You, but that we belong to You. Open our eyes to see what prophets and kings longed to see. Give us childlike hearts that receive Your truth with faith and obedience. Holy Spirit, guide us now as we listen to Your Word. Amen. Introduction: A Story - Returning From the Battle In the early nineties, a few years after Desert Storm, General Norman Schwarzkopf wrote an autobiography titled It Doesn't Take a Hero. Near the middle of the book, he describes his thoughts as he headed for his first combat command position in Vietnam. He was a West Point graduate, full of energy and idealism. He went to Vietnam, as he said, for “God, country, and Mom's apple pie.” But later, after a second tour of duty, he returned from a battle-scarred landscape where young men under his command had died or had lost parts of their bodies to landmines. He came home to a divided nation, and he wrote with exhausted realism, “I realized then I was really tired of being a commander… I thought, Thank God it's over. I'd saved as many lives as I could… I wanted to get home to my family.” Same geography. Same war. Same mission. But what a difference between the man who went out and the man who returned. In Luke 10, the seventy-two whom Jesus sent out also return from the battlefield. But the seventy-two return with joy. In our last message, “Practical Talk to Those in Ministry,” we watched Jesus send them out two by two. He told them the harvest was great and the workers were few. He sent them like lambs among wolves. He told them to travel light, offer peace, heal the sick, and announce that the Kingdom of God had come near. They went out as messengers of the King. / Now they return. And they come back like children running through the door after seeing something amazing. “Lord,” they say, “even the demons obey us when we use Your name!” They had gone out to announce peace, but they discovered that the name of Jesus also carried authority over the powers of darkness. Jesus rejoices with them. But He also corrects their perspective. He lifts their eyes above the thrill of ministry success and says, in effect, “Yes, rejoice that evil is retreating. But do not build your joy on power. Rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” That is our theme today: The greatest joy of a disciple is not what we do for Jesus, but that we belong to Jesus. Which brings us to our four truths today which are found in your bulletin insert on the side that is titled: Joyful Return, Insightful Response Main Point 1: Kingdom Ministry Pushes Back the Powers of Darkness The seventy-two return with joy and say, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use Your name.” That little word “even” carries their surprise. Jesus had told them to heal the sick and announce the Kingdom. But apparently, as they ministered in His name, demons also submitted. They saw firsthand that the mission of Jesus was not merely moral improvement, social kindness, or religious instruction. It was war against the dominion of evil. Luke has been showing us this from the beginning. Jesus confronted demons in the synagogue. He delivered the man in the region of the Gerasenes. He gave the Twelve authority over demons. He healed the boy whom His disciples could not help. And now the seventy-two discover that the authority of Jesus extends through them as well. This is where we need to understand the Bible's bigger supernatural worldview. The late Dr. Michael S. Heiser often reminded readers that the Bible presents a spiritual world populated by heavenly beings. In the Old Testament, we see scenes of God's heavenly council, sometimes called the Divine Council. God is the Most High, the Creator, the supreme King. But Scripture also shows lesser spiritual beings who serve, rebel, accuse, deceive, or oppose God's purposes. In Job 1 and 2, we meet “The Satan,” or “the adversary,” appearing among the heavenly beings. In that setting, the word functions like a title — the accuser, the challenger, the prosecutor. By the time we reach the New Testament, Satan is clearly presented as the great enemy of God's people, the tempter, the accuser, the ruler of a rebellious kingdom of darkness. So, when Jesus says in Luke 10:18, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning,” He is not giving the disciples a small compliment. He is interpreting their ministry as part of a cosmic victory. Every sick person healed, every demon rebuked, every message of Kingdom peace proclaimed — all of it was evidence that the usurper's rule was cracking. The adversary was falling. Object Lesson: The Flashlight in a Dark Room Imagine turning off the lights in a room and then switching on a flashlight. The darkness does not negotiate. / It does not hold a committee meeting. / It simply retreats where the light shines. That is what happens when the Kingdom of God advances. When Jesus walks into a synagogue, demons cry out. When Jesus steps into Gentile territory, a legion of demons loses its captive. When Jesus sends out His followers, evil spirits submit to His name. Not because the disciples are impressive, but because the King is present through them. Ancient Israelite Context For a first-century Jewish listener, this would not sound like a mere private spiritual experience. It would sound like the long-awaited victory of God. Genesis 3:15 promised that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent's head. Psalm 91 spoke of trampling lions and serpents underfoot. Daniel 7 envisioned the Son of Man receiving authority, glory, and sovereign power. The prophets looked forward to the day when God would defeat evil and restore creation. Now Jesus says, “You are seeing the beginning of that victory.” The Kingdom has come near. Modern Illustration We may not always see dramatic confrontations with evil spirits, but we still see the Kingdom push back darkness. When an addict finds freedom in Christ, darkness...
