This week, we're joined by our friend Jamie Lauren Keiles, a former contributing writer at the New York Times Magazine who is working on a book about nonbinary identity in America and posting at the archival Instagram account @sexchange.tbt. [4:45] Jamie discusses his resignation from the Times Magazine, and why he signed the recent open letter by WAWOG (the Writers Against the War on Gaza) as well as an earlier letter criticizing NYT's trans coverage. [47:40] We also talk about the process of unlearning pro-Israel propaganda and where a trans, anti-Zionist, observant Jew finds himself today, both institutionally and spiritually. In this episode, we ask: How is the presumed “objective” position within a media institution created and reinforced? What good (if any) can an open letter do? And how much does it matter what an American Jew thinks about all of this? How do people's minds actually get changed on Israel-Palestine? For more, see: * Jamie's latest Substack post: Do I believe that there are questions that should never be asked? * Jamie and Jazmine Hughes on Democracy Now! discussing their resignations from the Times Magazine * Jay's recent piece on the chilling of pro-Palestine speech within journalism * AP coverage of the Writers Bloc action in the New York Times building last week[1:04:00] And a big announcement! Listen to the end to catch Tammy and Jay present a new phase for the podcast. (Spoiler: Tammy is moving on in early December; Jay is continuing and wants your feedback.) As always, subscribe on Patreon or Substack to join our Discord community, which we hope to continue cultivating into the future. In episode 27, Liz and Ben are joined by guest writer and psychologist-in-training Craig Hildebrand-Burke to discuss the depressingly relevant yet uplifting 1997 Discworld novel of war and prejudice, Jingo. In the middle of the Circle Sea, halfway between Ankh-Morpork and Klatch, the ancient and slightly eldritch island of Leshp has risen from the waves. Of course both nations want to claim it as their own, what with the other nation being filthy foreign devils, and almost immediately the threat of war is in the wind. An attempt on the life of a visiting Klatchian prince kills peace talks before they can even begin, and the Patrician is deposed - leaving Sir Samuel Vimes, Lord Commander of the City Watch, with a crime to solve. Can bringing a murderer to justice stop a war? Jingo sees the Watch swell in size, gives a great deal of airtime to the Patrician, and also shines the spotlight on the Disc's greatest inventor, Leonard of Quirm! And of course we spend more time in Klatch, now inspired more by Lawrence of Arabia than Arabian Nights. It's a story of nationalism, racism and war - both of the regular kind, and between the classes. Jingo was not only still relevant when we recorded this, but has suddenly and awfully become more relevant since. Can Pratchett help us do away with ideas of Us and Them? Can he flesh out the previously cartoony city/nation/continent of Klatch? And how great are submarines? Use the hashtag #Pratchat27 on social media to join the conversation! Guest Craig Hildebrand-Burke is a writer who has recently completed a psychology degree. He's written fiction, non-fiction, reviews and commentary for publications including Tincture, Writers Bloc, ACMI and SBS News. You can find him on Twitter as @_CraigHB. Next month we leave the Discworld and head into outer space - and inside a computer - in 1992's Only You Can Save Mankind, the first of the Johnny Maxwell books for middle grade readers. We'll be recording in late January, so get your questions in via social media using the hashtag #Pratchat28. You'll find the full notes and errata for this episode on our web site. We recorded before the current Australian bushfires reached their peak, and so barely mentioned them in the episode; if you'd like to help the firefighters, wildlife workers or those affected by the fires, this JJJ article has some good places to start.
Prime Time Sports is off the air, but you can still hear all the great sports talk and interviews you've come to know from Jeff Blair, Richard Deitsch and Stephen Brunt on Writers Bloc. Subscribe to Writers Bloc here: https://podcast.sportsnet.ca/writers-bloc/

In the next hour, Dan Shulman checks-in from New York where he is calling the ALCS between the Yankees and Astros for ESPN Radio; and T.J. Quinn of "Outside the Lines" calls-in to discuss his investigative piece surrounding the death of Los Angeles Angels' pitcher Tyler Skaggs. In the final hour, the holiday roundtable assembles with Blair, Brunt, Shi Davidi, and Nick Alberga as the guys discuss the NHL, this past weekend in the National Football League, and the postseason in Major League Baseball.
Liam Pieper is an author and freelance journalist. Since the publication of his first book in 2014, a memoir named The Feel-Good Hit of the Year, he has quickly followed it up with two more. Last year, he published a collection of short essays called Mistakes Were Made, which I reviewed for The Weekend Australian, where I described his writing as "electric: charged with meaning and energised by surprising comedic turns". With his third book, Liam has proved that he's supremely talented at writing fiction, too. Named The Toymaker, his debut novel is based on an ambitions, multi-layered narrative that travels between an Australian business set in the present day, and German concentration camps during World War II. The character that links these two worlds is a Russian man imprisoned during the war who escapes to Australia and starts a globally successful toy business. When Liam visited Brisbane in early August, I met him for the first time at his hotel room. Our conversation touches on the unique way in which Liam received funding to research and write The Toymaker while living overseas; how he navigated the legal threats that arose after the publication of his first book, which detailed his career as an adolescent drug dealer; how he messed up an important magazine assignment by filing 22,000 words instead of the requested length of 5,000 words; and how he helps young writers with finding the voice that best suits their style while working as content director for an online community called Writers Bloc. Liam Pieper is a Melbourne-based author and journalist. His first book was a memoir, The Feel-Good Hit of the Year, shortlisted for the National Biography Award and the Ned Kelly Best True Crime award. His second was the Penguin Special Mistakes Were Made, a volume of humorous essays. He was co-recipient of the 2014 M Literary Award, winner of the 2015 Geoff Dean Short Story Prize and the inaugural creative resident of the UNESCO City of Literature of Prague. He is also content director of Writers Bloc, a platform and resource for emerging writers. The Toymaker is his first novel. As part of our podcast series with All the Best, Writers Bloc will be chatting to radio makers and giving tips on how to turn your beautiful prose into a quick audio story. This is a snapshot of the sound quality you'll get if you choose to record on your computer, using a recording app like the PCM Recorder II, or using a portable mic like a Zoom H1.
Charlie Grandy was a writer on The Daily Show without Jon Stewart. He was also a writer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and was on staff with me when we won our first Emmy. Good times. We talk about those years, the difference between the “Jon” and “non-Jon” writing processes, and what it’s like to get a job where you feel like the least qualified writer in the room. After The Daily Show, Charlie moved over to Weekend Update at SNL and within a couple of years was running that department. It’s Writers’ Bloc’s first in-depth look at the process at SNL and it’s a good one. We also talk about his first sitcom writing job at a little sleeper show over on NBC called “The Office” and what it’s like to get your own show on the air only to have your own show taken off the air. Ouch! But don’t worry. Today, Charlie is writing for The Mindy Project and he still has all of his hair… which is nice.
