Friends,Yesterday, Michael Johnson was voted in (barely) as speaker by the new Republican-controlled Congress. This Monday, Kamala Harris will preside over Congress to certify the electoral vote, making Donald Trump the next president. The last time Congress met to certify an electoral vote, it was invaded by Trump supporters who threatened the lives of all members along with the Capitol Police, at Trump's urging. But instead of being held accountable, Trump is about to become president. The person who is also unaccountable for wielding power — although in a very different way from Trump — is Elon Musk. He's the richest person in the world; spent a quarter of a billion dollars getting Trump elected; and has the world's largest megaphone, through which he is amplifying lies in support of right-wing parties and candidates around the world, and by which he blew up a bipartisan compromise on the federal budget that not incidentally barred him from working on Artificial Intelligence with the Chinese. We talk about all this and more on today's Klatch. Please pull up a chair, grab a cuppa, take our poll, and join in the discussion. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit robertreich.substack.com/subscribe
Friends,Like many of you, I've been wrestling with grief, fear, and anger. The outcome of the election was far worse than I had feared. On today's Klatch, Heather, Michael, and I take a deep dive into what happened and why. We also ask: What do we do now? I don't have all the answers, but I believe Heather, Michael, and I are at least asking the right questions. We're eager to have your thoughts as well. Please grab a cuppa, pull up a chair, take our poll (if you wish), and join in the conversation. This is a public episode. We've seen Cometeer advertised quite a bit so, intrigued by the concept, we decided to do an episode about it. A coffee concept born of a lazy college student, Cometeer is a frozen coffee concentrate meant to be constituted with water and claims to be as good as a freshly brewed cup of coffee. Developed between said college student, an OG of specialty coffee, and a bunch of venture capital money, does this product solve a problem, or does it solve a contrived problem in search of a customer base? Listen and find out what we think when we try this variety pack of coffees from Klatch, Joe Coffee, Counter Culture, and Equator.Cometeer Coffee: https://cometeer.com/Further media:https://www.inc.com/anna-meyer/cometeer-frozen-coffee-allbirds-warby-parker.htmlhttps://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/10/19/business/gloucester-tech-startup-plots-future-coffee/https://www.notboring.co/p/a-new-day-on-earth-for-coffee?s=rHelp us buy questionable coffee!https://www.patreon.com/nobadreviewspodhttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/nobadreviewspodSponsored by Modest Coffee! Billy and Brian talk to Janet M. Taylor, an Organizing Expert with over 28 years experience. She is the host and producer of the Got Clutter? Get Organized! podcast. Janet was crowned Clutter Free Queen by Rachael Ray in 2018, and she is here today just in time for spring cleaning to help us do some decluttering and organizing. We ask Janet: --What is it about an organized home that brings about joy and relaxation for you? What do your clients say after you've helped them organize their homes?--What's the toughest part about keeping a home organized and clutter-free for most people? How about for you? When you're talking to clients about the clutter they're living in, what reasons/excuses do they give you about why they're living in such squalor?--In one of your podcast episodes, you talked about having at least one place in your home that has to be organized, and for you, it's the bedroom. Why is it important to have at least ONE room/space in your home be organized, and why is yours the bedroom?--How do people often fall short when it comes to spring cleaning? Why do we put that much pressure or importance on spring cleaning when we have three other seasons to declutter and organize our lives?--A couple of your podcast episodes are devoted to helping people with ADD/ADHD stay organized and clutter-free What tips do you give people with ADD/ADHD, and for parents of children who have ADD/ADHD, how do you help them keep a clutter-free space despite the havoc children in general can wreak on a house.--Not only do you help people organize their environments, but you also help people organize time so they can be more efficient. How much do these two relate to each other? Which one needs to be in order for you first?Like what you heard from Janet M. Taylor? Razib Khan is a Bangladeshi-American writer in population genetics and consumer genomics (wikipedia). He identifies as a Coconut, and is a repeat member of Club Cancel, getting denounced by friends and associates approximately every 6 months. He and the Dorx start the episode by erasing as many ethnicities, religions, and genders as they can. Then Khan recounts the sorry tale of Scientific American (a science fiction magazine) and late great biologist E.O. Wilson. Our smart and funny guest is all bravado and self-confidence until Nina asks him to define “woman,” the question that brings even the toughest intellectuals to their knees. This is the third in the series of movies staring the real life husband and wife duo Carlos and Alexa PenaVega. Allie Adams is back stage taking cast photos for a mystery play, when she finds the body of the show's star. Soon she finds that the list of suspects is almost as long as a movie's credits. Can Allie find the killer before her own final credits? This movie combines the humor, quirky characters, and suspense you expect in a cozy. As she's investigating his estate she finds some strangely labeled photos and some carved wooden dolls including, what appears to be, a self portrait of the late Mr. Jorgenson. A talk with the neighbors shows that he was not a liked man, but the stories she hears of other parts of his life tell a different story, All this is adding to one question "Who was Pieter Jorgenson?" A review of the debut novel for author Hannah Kurz. Stephanie Wu is drawn into a thrilling mystery when the owner of The Likable Daisy Bakery is found dead from an apparent accident. But the way he was dressed and where his body was found all come together to add up to a different story. Could Sameed have been murdered? On top of everything else Samantha is a new mother, just starting to adjust to the changes in her life. Even though the book is set in bustling New York city Hannah still manages to create that wonderfully small sense of community that readers come to expect in a cozy mystery. I truly loved this book and it was an honor to be asked to beta read it. Join us tomorrow as I interview Hannah and talk with her about her book, writing, and all things cozy. Today I'm reviewing a short story by Author DA Kelly called The Jig's Back door. The story is full of humor, adventure and magic, featuring two goblin brothers and a very snarky map as they seek a magical stone. From line one you can guess that the adventure didn't go exactly as planned. The Jig's Back Door is not my usual cozy mystery review, but it's well worth the read and left me excited for DA Kelly's debut novel Brooms Away. To get your free copy of this terrific short story join DA Kelly's newsletter and stay up to date on her writing journey at: https://dl.bookfunnel.com/4yksc8hzr0 I want to thank my patron Regina for becoming A Guiding Clue and helping us meet our goals to stay commercial-free and growing. In episode 27, Liz and Ben are joined by guest writer and psychologist-in-training Craig Hildebrand-Burke to discuss the depressingly relevant yet uplifting 1997 Discworld novel of war and prejudice, Jingo. In the middle of the Circle Sea, halfway between Ankh-Morpork and Klatch, the ancient and slightly eldritch island of Leshp has risen from the waves. Of course both nations want to claim it as their own, what with the other nation being filthy foreign devils, and almost immediately the threat of war is in the wind. An attempt on the life of a visiting Klatchian prince kills peace talks before they can even begin, and the Patrician is deposed - leaving Sir Samuel Vimes, Lord Commander of the City Watch, with a crime to solve. Can bringing a murderer to justice stop a war? Jingo sees the Watch swell in size, gives a great deal of airtime to the Patrician, and also shines the spotlight on the Disc's greatest inventor, Leonard of Quirm! And of course we spend more time in Klatch, now inspired more by Lawrence of Arabia than Arabian Nights. It's a story of nationalism, racism and war - both of the regular kind, and between the classes. Jingo was not only still relevant when we recorded this, but has suddenly and awfully become more relevant since. Can Pratchett help us do away with ideas of Us and Them? Can he flesh out the previously cartoony city/nation/continent of Klatch? And how great are submarines? Use the hashtag #Pratchat27 on social media to join the conversation! Guest Craig Hildebrand-Burke is a writer who has recently completed a psychology degree. He's written fiction, non-fiction, reviews and commentary for publications including Tincture, Writers Bloc, ACMI and SBS News. You can find him on Twitter as @_CraigHB. Next month we leave the Discworld and head into outer space - and inside a computer - in 1992's Only You Can Save Mankind, the first of the Johnny Maxwell books for middle grade readers. We'll be recording in late January, so get your questions in via social media using the hashtag #Pratchat28. You'll find the full notes and errata for this episode on our web site. We recorded before the current Australian bushfires reached their peak, and so barely mentioned them in the episode; if you'd like to help the firefighters, wildlife workers or those affected by the fires, this JJJ article has some good places to start.
Mr. Cramer is one of the few men on the planet who’s beard has its own Instagram page. And as if that weren’t enough, he was recently selected as one of the 50 most inspiring and accomplished leaders from across Minnesota in 2019. But when we asked about his accomplishments, the one he’s proudest of is his “amazing marriage.” Proud dog parents to a basset hound named “Doc”, he and Cassie are roughly one year into her metastatic breast cancer journey. And at over 21 years into their marriage they still refer themselves “newlyweds.” The native Chicagoan and co-founder of Grassroot Solutions has an intense desire to make the world a better place. One of the many ways he’s doing that is by joining Jack’s, not only as a member, but also as a volunteer leader on our Klatch team. We explore with him what it was about Jack’s macho language on our website that almost prevented him from reaching out. We also take a deep dive into what it is about our Caregiver Klatches that inspires him and where he sees opportunities to take the Klatch in the future. He also shares with us his single biggest takeaway from our programming, what inspired him and Cassie to start their important blog for couples facing cancer meaningandstuff.com, and what it’s like to be a competitive backgammon player!

Rosalinda Noriega is a long time award winning advocate for youth who is currently the Executive Director of Pizza Klatch, a program for LGBTQ youth in our local schools. Pizza Klatch has become very popular among our youth, who in some circumstances have been asking for it to come to their schools. In this episode Mike Perry from Klatch Coffee talks about Espresso. Klatch won multiple national and international awards for their espresso coffees so I asked if single origin or blend is the way to go. Mike talks also about techniques to develop an award winning espresso blend, roast profiles for espresso blends, the ideal espresso machine for startups, coffee business in Asia and much more! Enjoy!
In this episode, our guest is Mike Perry from Klatch Coffee who will share his over 20 years of experience in the coffee industry over the upcoming 3 episodes. Mike and his wife Cindy started Klatch in 1993, and have been honored with multiple prestigious national and international coffee awards. In the first episode Mike will talk about his coffee story and how bad coffee at the office and a lack of decent cafes for a date can lead to the start of a great coffee venture. The Klatch cafe came first, rather then roasting, and through the interview we'll learn how a cafe can be an amazing catalyst for a successful roastery. Mike will tell us one of those cool “how I found my roaster” stories, which can happen once every ten years. I have a few stories of my own, so if you haven't heard them, go ahead and listen to the previous episodes. Mike found a 24 kilo Diedrich, which initiated a debate about the ideal roaster size for a coffee startup. Mike will also discuss what the minimum load is on a 24 kilo roaster. Mike will tell us if roasting in a cafe in is a good idea or not, and point out the milestones as Klatch Roasting grew from selling a few hundred pounds in 1997 to 400,000 pounds today.
