Valedictory addresses delivered by valedictorians at high school and college graduations are as much a sign of spring in the United States as baseball games and cookouts. Though we don't know where the first valedictory address was given, we do know that such addresses were an institution at some colleges in the U.S. by the time Noah Webster wrote his famous 1828 dictionary. (We also know that valedictory was used in non-academic settings—mostly churches, and especially in the phrase “valedictory sermon”—from the mid-1600s.) Since a valedictory speech is given at the end of an academic career, it is perfectly in keeping with the meaning of its Latin ancestor, valedīcere, which means “to say goodbye.”

The key words to the success of the Chinese communist revolution are luck and violence — at least, that's according to Prof. Frank Dikötter.Continuing from our last episode on Prof. Frank Dikötter's new book, Red Dawn Over China, we trace the origin story of the Chinese Communist Party, and revisit how the CCP went from an obscure, unpopular, intellectual-led political force to take over the whole of mainland China.Prof. Dikötter is the Milias Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and chair professor of humanities at the University of Hong Kong. He is the most widely read living historian of modern China, with books translated into more than twenty languages. Join us to hear from renowned historian Frank Dikötter, who offers a commanding history recasting how communists seized power in China. In April 1927, soldiers and detectives descended upon the Russian Embassy in Beijing, revolvers drawn. An hour later, they emerged with a trove of documents, some of them partly damaged by Russians who had tried quickly to destroy them. In these singed and soggy papers was proof that Moscow, despite agreeing three years earlier not to “propagate communistic doctrines,” had, in fact, sent what amounts to millions in today's dollars—along with shiploads of arms and advisors—to support nothing less than a revolution in China.  These findings are hardly ever mentioned by historians—until now. Dikötter says the history of modern China has long been framed as an organic enterprise, wherein Communists mobilized the “peasants,” took land from the rich and redistributed it to the poor. Drawing on the Beijing raid as well as several other overlooked archives, Dikötter's new book Red Dawn Over China reveals how unlikely a communist victory actually was, had it not been for massive financial and military support from the Soviet Union; a brutal war of occupation by Japan; severe miscalculations by the United States; and—most of all—the Communist Party's unflinching will to conquer at all costs. Dikötter reveals how what began in 1921 with 13 delegates in a dusty room led to a red flag being raised over the Forbidden City in 1949, forever altering the course of history for a quarter of humanity and shaping the global balance of power as we know it today.  About the Speaker: Frank Dikötter is the Milias Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. Marianne Nykjaer is medeoprichtster van Dik voor Mekaar – een organisatie die ijvert voor de gelijkwaardige behandeling van dikke mensen. Ze is al meer dan 10 jaar actief als bodypositivity-activist, schrijver, spreker en influencer. Marianne beschrijft zichzelf als ‘fat, disabled & generally awesome'. Ze heeft veel ervaring als zorgvrager, lag weken in coma door COVID en spendeerde anderhalf jaar in revalidatie- en andere zorgcentra. Merel Thijs is onderzoeker en praktijkassistent in de vakgroep Zorg & Ethiek aan de Faculteit Geneeskunde en Levenswetenschappen van de UHasselt, waar ze onderzoek doet naar betekenisvolle zorg. Ze studeerde achtereenvolgens ergotherapie en wijsbegeerte en moraalwetenschappen. Vanuit die brede achtergrond wil ze inzetten op ethiek in de zorg en het creëren van goede zorg, met een bijzondere aandacht voor waardigheid en de toegankelijkheid. DIK har släppt rapporten Kulturen – måltavla och motståndskraft. En rapport om beredskapen för kris och krig på museer och bibliotek, och kulturens roll i totalförsvaret. Rapporten visar bland annat att bara 4 procent av de som arbetar på museum eller bibliotek anser att deras arbetsplats har tillräckliga resurser för beredskapsarbete. Och att endast två av tio biblioteksanställda säger att det finns en beredskapsplan för krig. Det är siffror som pekar på stora brister. Inte bara i resurser, utan också i förståelse för kulturens betydelse i kris och krig.   Så vad krävs för att stärka beredskapen? Hur kan kulturen bli en kraft i totalförsvaret? Frank Dikötter is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution who has recently returned to the United States after living in Hong Kong since 2006. In this provocative conversation, Dikötter challenges the prevailing narrative about China's rise. Drawing from his latest book, China After Mao: The Rise of a Superpower, Dikötter argues that the Chinese Communist Party has masterfully projected the image of a powerful, modern, and economically dominant nation—but says that image is largely a façade. Dikötter contends that far from being a true superpower, China remains fundamentally fragile: an empire held together by repression, propaganda, and paranoia. Despite gleaming cities and impressive-seeming economic statistics often cited by the West, he asserts that much of China's so-called growth has been built on the backs of an impoverished population, often without its consent or benefit. He further explains how inflated numbers, hollow institutions, and internal contradictions undermine China's long-term strength. In his view, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) hasn't lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty—it has merely stepped aside as ordinary people began reclaiming their autonomy after decades of devastation under Mao. Dikötter delves into how the CCP's fear—of its own citizens, of capitalism, of peaceful evolution—has driven decisions for decades. Dikötter also draws parallels with the Soviet Union and suggests that, like the USSR's, China's power is brittle beneath the surface. Xi Jinping, he argues, is not a break from tradition but a continuation of the Party's long-standing obsession with control. This conversation calls into question not only China's global ambitions but also how the West has consistently misread the CCP's intentions and capabilities. Ultimately, Dikötter leaves us with a stark question: Are we overestimating China's strength—and underestimating its fear? Recorded on March 27, 2025.

Aeschylus' Oresteia is the only extant trilogy of Greek drama. Alongside the Parthenon, the Oresteia is considered one of the two greatest 'monuments' to the Golden Age of Athens. In this trilogy - The Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides - Aeschylus dramatizes a rite of passage from savagery to civilization. Over the course of the narrative, the ancient law of blood is overcome by a new civic law, sanctioned by the gods. The word "justice" (Dikê) is used more often in the Oresteia than in any other Greek tragedy.
