Frank Dikötter is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution who has recently returned to the United States after living in Hong Kong since 2006. In this provocative conversation, Dikötter challenges the prevailing narrative about China's rise. Drawing from his latest book, China After Mao: The Rise of a Superpower, Dikötter argues that the Chinese Communist Party has masterfully projected the image of a powerful, modern, and economically dominant nation—but says that image is largely a façade. Dikötter contends that far from being a true superpower, China remains fundamentally fragile: an empire held together by repression, propaganda, and paranoia. Despite gleaming cities and impressive-seeming economic statistics often cited by the West, he asserts that much of China's so-called growth has been built on the backs of an impoverished population, often without its consent or benefit. He further explains how inflated numbers, hollow institutions, and internal contradictions undermine China's long-term strength. In his view, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) hasn't lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty—it has merely stepped aside as ordinary people began reclaiming their autonomy after decades of devastation under Mao. Dikötter delves into how the CCP's fear—of its own citizens, of capitalism, of peaceful evolution—has driven decisions for decades. Dikötter also draws parallels with the Soviet Union and suggests that, like the USSR's, China's power is brittle beneath the surface. Xi Jinping, he argues, is not a break from tradition but a continuation of the Party's long-standing obsession with control. This conversation calls into question not only China's global ambitions but also how the West has consistently misread the CCP's intentions and capabilities. Hedy is opgewonden over een fantastisch betoog van oud-politieman Dik van Oers die zelfdodingsmiddel X legaal wil verspreiden. Vrolijk werd ze deze week van een tentoonstelling die ze bezocht in het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam over architectenechtpaar Aldo van Eyck en Hannie van Roijen. Hadassah zag heel veel prachtige voorstellingen op het Theaterfestival, en had het gevoel zelf in een toneelstuk te zijn beland toen ze een varkensslachterij bezocht. In vroeger en nu blikt Hedy terug op haar samenwerking en vriendschap met politica Ien Dales. Verder bespreken we het humeur van de politieke partijen. Extreem rechts gaat over onvrede en angst. Het is nu de taak van de politiek om daar vrolijkheid, hoop en een visie op de toekomst tegenover te stellen. Tot slot besteden we aandacht aan de verspillingsvrije week. Dat het hier een roman betreft, fictie, en tegelijk een boek, is gebaseerd op dat wat doorgaat als ‘waargebeurde feiten' lijkt niet cruciaal voor de leeservaring, maar is het dat voor de auteur wel. Hella Haasse, die deze populaire historische roman schreef in 1992, voorzag haar roman van een uitgebreide verantwoording: “De stof is […] niet verzonnen, maar wél geselecteerd en gearrangeerd volgens de eisen die een roman-aanpak stelt.” Waarom al deze bijsluiters? Nelleke Noordervliet, zelf auteur van historische romans als Tine en groot liefhebber én kenner van het werk van Hella Haasse gaat samen met letterkundige Dik van der Meulen in gesprek over deze en andere vragen. Noordervliet zoekt onder meer een verklaring in de minachting waarmee in Nederland doorgaans wordt gesproken over de historische roman. Wat verklaart dat dedain, en in hoeverre houdt de kritiek stand op dit genre, dat W.F. Hermans ooit typeerde als “een gasfornuis dat is aangesloten op de waterleiding”?

The word entered Middle English as dyker and by the 14th century had evolved to dicker.

Nederlanders in loondienst krijgen deze week hun eerste loonstrook van het nieuwe jaar. Voor veel mensen betekent dat waarschijnlijk goed nieuws: want een hoger bruto loon dan vorig jaar. Sinds 1 januari 2024 is het Koninklijk Huisarchief een stukje verder opengesteld voor onderzoek: tot en met de regeerperiode van Koningin Wilhelmina. Koning Willem-Alexander kondigde het aan op het moment dat de NSDAP-lidmaatschapskaart van zijn opa openbaar werd. Prins Bernhard bleek bewijs van zijn lidmaatschap van de partij van Adolf Hitler in dat archief te hebben bewaard. Wat komen we nu te weten, nu het privé-archief van de Oranjes verder opengesteld is? Dat er interessante dingen in zijn opgeslagen weet biograaf Dik van der Meulen al te goed. Hij schreef een biografie over Koning Willem III en vond in het archief een brief vol emotie, vertelt hij in podcast De Dag. Voor z'n nieuwe boek over prins Bernhard wil hij weer het archief in. Historicus Daniela Hooghiemstra maakte ook zo'n "historische sensatie" mee in het archief, toen ze meer te weten kwam over het liefdesleven van Willem II. Is Xi Jinping the most powerful political figure in the world? Or are his efforts to secure tighter control at home and project influence abroad more a sign of underlying weakness? As Xi sails toward an unprecedented third term at the 19th Party Congress in China, Deparatures is pleased to feature special guest author Frank Dikötter whose new book, "China After Mao: The Rise of a Superpower," presents a compelling and detailed portrait of the major events which led us to today. In his discussion with Robert Amsterdam, Dikötter discusses how China presented its recovery plan on 40 years of economic transformation based on reform and opening up to the world, but finds that there was actually very little reform and even less opening up. "There's a major misconception that I hope will be corrected when readers go through my book," Dikötter says. The idea that Xi Jinping is some sort of dictator who wants to go back to the Mao period - and if only we could go back to where we were before Xi Jinping, maybe there was a chance for China to develop in a different direction. Highly unlikely, Dikötter argues, as since as far back as 1972 the party has shown a very clear commitment to the monopoly on power and controlling the economic means of production. "What we are getting from Xi Jinping is hardly a departure from what has happened under other leaders," he says. Dikötter's rigorous examination of rare government archives makes this book stand out for its detailed and colorful history of this period, and contributes enormously to understanding how the West has failed to anticipate China's vision for the world order.
