Charlotte has got an exciting trip coming up and Helli had a much less exciting weekend involving a blown tyre and flagging down cars on the side of the road. We're lamenting the clothing sizing issue that women face, especially when shopping for jeans and have a surprisingly long sports chat (unexpected, we know). We're chatting about how we often feel like we should wait for the "perfect time" to do things and the problems that causes. How do we know when to just start and how do we find the confidence to do something even when it's outside our comfort zone? It's picky tea season in the UK but there's a rogue revelation that someone doesn't like picky tea... Helli has only just discovered a British staple podcast and Charlotte is repeating last week's recommendation... we're here for the chaos! We're mixing heavy recommendations with a sprinkle of lighter ones this week, and we're chatting all about Soft Life... The Soft Life Aesthetic is supposed to be the antidote to Hustle Culture, the idea is to have more self-compassion, more intentionality, slow mornings and effortless routines. But the very nature of this curated trend means there is a lot of hypocrisy and privilege in what the soft life aesthetic stands for and the nature of creating content online means it is far from effortless. But there are some fundamentals of this trend that are important and speak to a wider craving of our generation for a more gentle, slower and compassionate lifestyle. You know when you're about to make the big scary decision, and you know it's the right one and that you're being brave and courageous, but it feels the total opposite? Well that's what we're discussing this week. People are always quick to tell you to make the brace decision but fail to mention that when you're making the decision it can feel pretty terrifying. After we've both had wholesome Easter bank holiday weekends, of course we're back with chaos! And this week we're talking about how real self care is not sexy, content-worthy or "aesthetic" like the wellness and self-care we're sold online. Instead self-care is boring, it's effective, it's preventative. But the online aesthetic over-complicates it and creates the pressure to do it "right", rather than doing it genuinely for you. The self-care we're sold online is very privileged and assumes that journalling, meditation, skin care and morning routines are a one-size fits all, without taking into account the unique needs of everyone. Yes, that's where e grow. Yes, it's good to be uncomfortable sometimes. And OF COURSE we know we can't just expect success and everything we want overnight, but that isn't to say it isn't sometimes kinda lonely. Avoid Amazon but don't overshop if you shop secondhard, reduce screentime but also stay informed. We're constantly told what to do, what's right, what's wrong, what you should do more of or less of. While we do constantly strive to do better by ourselves, by others and by the planet, the hard truth is that it's impossible to get everything right on the overwhelming list of “perfect choices”, so how do we come to terms with what we can do? Most of us complain about getting older but between the two of us, we so often talk about how ageing is the ultimate privilege. That's not to say ageing is easy and it certainly comes with its challenges, but ageing is a privilege that not everyone gets to experience and we live in a society, particularly as women, where we're sold anti-wrinkle creams, wellness is commercialised and we praise people who look younger than their years. Charlotte has a new heated blanket and is getting ready to go to Stockholm, Helli is in the depths of house hunting and apologies for her muffled audio, her mic plug broke right before recording... We've got a juicy chat at the start of the episode about the dangers of what you share about your life online and how trends are mimicking history and the problems with idolising a part of history that you weren't part of. And of course we recognise the irony of our topic this week... but as two humanities students who love to analyse (and over-analyse!), however have we as a society gone too far with trying to find a deeper meaning in everything? Social media has made it easy to over-intellectualise everything from politics to pop culture and while the skills of analysis and being able to vocalise our opinions are important, maybe "being deep" has become performative because of that. Things are allowed to be fun, silly and entertaining, there is value in lightheartedness and maybe we just don't need to have an opinion on absolutely everything. Helli's been ill for the third time this year (thanks, 2025) and Charlotte has thrown her back out, BUT we're here! This week we're wondering, why are we obsessed with labelling people are role models and policing how people behave because we think they're a role model? Prepare yourself for a very in depth chat about Charlotte's stringent Goodreads rating process and Helli's meta take on reviewing books throughout life. It's February, maybe you're struggling with your New Year goals or maybe you never made any, either way we feel like setting some creative goals rather than metrics-based goals is a great way to find more joy and authenticity in your life and to redefine what an achievement is. Yes, hitting sales targets or income goals is great, but not every goal has to be so black or white or come with so much stress/pressure. Trying something new, getting outside your comfort zone, making something imperfectly, enjoying yourself even if you're not perfect at something, doing something in your community, these are all achievements, maybe it's time we re-defined what goals and achievements look like. Charlotte reveals which celebrities she gets mixed up and we're both surprised to learn how literal the direct translation of the names are in Lion King... Plus who is the internet obsessed with right now. So all this feels very fitting that we're talking about brain rot content. Oxford English Dictionary named "brain rot" their word of the year for 2024, but what does it mean? What is brain rot content? How do we classify it and is it different for everyone? Is it fundamentally bad? And how much does our intention behind our content consumption decide whether or not it's brain rot? A discussion about ice hockey was not on our 2025 podcast bingo card, but we like to keep you (and ourselves) guessing! This week we're chatting about the phrase "you're not like other girls". This phrase feels like it was normalised in 90s rom-coms and was always the "ultimate compliment" from a guy. We both get a big ick from this phrase for many reasons, why shouldn't we be like other girls? and how does this backhanded compliment double as a patriarchal means of controlling women? Helli is back from Scotland and Charlotte has officially given notice! We have a chat about True Crime and whether the genre as a form of entertainment has crossed a line into excessive depictions of abuse and violence to serve a fascination with the perverse, rather than as a deterrent for behaviour like this. This week we're chatting about the topic of urgency culture, we are so used to having everything we need at our fingertips from Amazon Prime delivery to Uber Eats and multiple streaming services to choose from - has this given us unrealistic expectations of ourselves and others? We've normalised expecting instant results so how does this impact our mental health and skills like patience and resilience. We've grown up glamourising productivity, girlbossing, multitasking, click to tidy videos and Sunday resets that happen in 20 seconds - the reality is that this takes hours. Urgency Culture has become normal culture but it creates a perceived pressure that is unsustainable, unrealistic and can ultimately lead to burnout. This week we're getting into why actually, *everybody* wants "Nobody Wants This", the book everyone needs to read this autumn and why we all need to lean into trusting our gut feelings a bit more. Why are we so bad at trusting our guts? Is it because we're women and we're told it's silly? Is it because we're always looking for solid evidence before we make a decision? It's official, Helli is married and her wedding was one of the best. days. ever. After a summary of the highlights (because honestly that could have been an episode in its own right), you've got two documentary recommendations and then a conversation about opinions. Just because we all have them and can share them, doesn't mean that we should. Access to social media and a forum to share every thought and opinion we've ever had should have made us wiser and more well-informed, but this isn't always the case. Are there times when it's best to say nothing at all? Should you share opinions when you don't have any authority in the area? You could be forgiven for all of these trends passing by you in the blink of the eye, or missing them entirely if you're on a different algorithm to us. But that's what we're talking about today, does having a world dominated by algorithms, and a new trend bursting onto the scene every week mean that actually culture is being flattened? We've all been there, none of us are perfect but it's a horrible feeling to actually be called out and realise that you're part of the problem. That said, it's also incredibly freeing to realise that you can also change the situation and grow so buckle up for some confronting and somewhat squirmy conversations today. Charlotte has been thriving at the Eras Tour, Helli has been surviving in the last couple of weeks of wedding prep - but we move! This week we've got an amazing app recommendation and a super helpful recommendation for finding your style. Today we're discussing making a weakness your whole personality - inspired by a conversation on Shameless about people who make being late their whole personality, we're chatting about how doing this might feel easier to own it, but doing this doesn't remove accountability and does it even benefit you? We've told ourselves that we're bad at maths, Charlotte says she's bad at parking, Helli says she has a weak upper body and is a stubborn person. Are these things actually true? Do they help you to keep sharing them with people or is it giving people a negative preconception of you? Are you perpetuating an insecurity cycle of negative self-talk? Let us know your thoughts! We had a lovely meet up in London this week to pick out Helli's wedding fragrance and we're recapping the week of wedding nightmares, Deadpool & Wolverine movie and Charlotte's dreamy new gym. This week we're talking about self-criticism, it can be intrusive and insidious as well as all-consuming and often for many of us and women in particular it's so subconscious and "normal" that you don't realise how destructive it is. We're still very much in the weeds of our own self-criticism but we hope having this conversation will help more people spot and break their own self-criticism cycle. Are you having a Brat Summer? No, we aren't either, unless baked oats and watching the Olympics 24/7 count. But we do have some great recommendations and we start to unpick some of the damaging and unconscious biases we have surrounding diet culture. We grew up with the Special K diet, no carbs, clean eating, heroin chic, The Kardashian's and ever other itteration of diet culture that you can imagine. And whilst we can look back now and see how harmful it was, it doesn't mean that it's easy to actually change our mindsets. Over the past 3 months with of us have undertaken big lifestyle changes to become our strongest, fittest and healthiest versions of ourselves, but as we've done that we've also had to start confronting some of the toxic beliefs we've held despite many of them starting with good intentions. This episode contains conversations about diet culture, body image, bodyweight disordered eating and other similar themes. We've been chatting for 3 hours before this recording, fortunately we literally NEVER run out of things to talk about so enjoy this chaotic episode with returning podcast recommendations, a rogue recommendation, Helli calling out Charlotte's 2024 Bingo Card and Charlotte's growing love of Glen Powell (and his dog). After a recent TikTok went viral about friends not liking each other's posts on social media, we wanted to have a conversation about performative friendships - what are they? How do you identify them and do they even matter? Social media makes it easier than ever for relationships to be more performative, especially with the changing priorities and pressures of everyone's lives, but what it really comes down to is how those friendships show up for you in the moments that matter. Helli has been navigating the waterways of England and Wales on a narrowboat, Charlotte has had a wholesome weekend in Kent and we're catching up on all the big and small things, like fears of bats and Charlotte learning that Helli hates custard. This week we're chatting about AI in light of the recent controversy by SheerLuxe who introduced their newest "editor" - an AI-generated creation. It's safe to say it did not have the effect they had hoped for and the backlash was swift. This conversation isn't about the SheerLuxe debacle but it brought up some interesting thoughts for us around how do we embrace AI? Is AI actually stealing our jobs? How do we (and the growing AI industry) hold ourselves accountable when using AI? What disclosures should be in place? This is just the start of AI, it's scary because of its potential but pretending it doesn't exist isn't a solution either, how do we embrace it while being aware of its flaws, the disparity in who can access it and the misinformation it potentially promotes? We're back and boy do we have a lot to catch up on. We've got hen parties, out-of-date-but-great recommendations and we're having a chat about the weird limbo we've found ourselves in recently. It's no secret that we've both been working on a few big things for a while, and we're thrilled that we can finally say we've ticked some of them off. But as chronic over-achievers we can't help but feel like we're now in a strange mid-ground. We want to celebrate we are, but also can't help but think about our next goals. It's hard to break the habit of constantly looking forward, and even harder to stop and be grateful for where you are, but we're sharing how we're trying to and why it's such a gear-shift. We're sharing the songs on our do-not-play list for our weddings and Charlotte's new crafting venture. If you've ever had that horrible feeling when you're making a decision "but what if I get it wrong?" - then this episode is for you. We're chatting about how no decision is the wrong decision when it comes to making decisions about your life. It's easy to obsess over decisions we've made, but the reality is that you made a decision with the information you had at the time and that's all anyone can do. We're chatting beer festivals Helli has attended and Charlotte's first week at her new job, along with the usual chaos of dark chocolate, knot tying expertise, Godzilla facts and Helli's microphone dying halfway through (sorry!) Sometimes something has become so habitual and easy that it becomes second-nature to underestimate or undervalue the skills and knowledge you have. Whether it's planning a strategy, the ability to be organised, being a polyglot, creating content or even hobbies you do in your spare time. It takes a lot of effort to make something look effortless and it can become easy to lose sight of the value or authority you bring to the table. We feel like we should know how to do everything and yet especially as women we feel the pressure to be humble about our achievements, but what seems normal and easy to you, is a valuable skill to someone else and you don't realise the value you what you know. You'll be pleased to know that this week has been far less stressful. We've got our cortisol under control, spent plenty of time outside and even discovered a brand new boy band (IYKYK). We're sharing our two latest obsessions (and of course one includes some true crime) and then we're chatting about what we think the new biggest luxury is: privacy. We've gone from being a generation of chronic over-sharers to ones that hardly post on socials at all, and it isn't just us. The rise of "unplugged weddings", combined birth & pregnancy announcements and even major fashion brands leveraging privacy as something to set them apart has got us thinking about whether the new ultimate form of luxury is privacy. It's not about the fear of missing out anymore, instead if you're not there you just miss out. Is that a good thing? Are we willing to sacrifice privacy if there's something in it for us? Is this a new trend or is it simply returning to how things used to be? It has been *a week* - Charlotte has spent hours sat at hospital and Helli hit a new level of peak stress and overwhelm with work, wedding planning and LIFE. But we're here to chat about appreciating the journey. We live in a world of instant gratification which makes it feel very uncomfortable/frustrating when you have to sit in that discomfort and wait for the results we're aiming for. We've spoken in recent episodes about knowing who you're doing it for and curating your own milestones - these are all really important parts of appreciating the journey. While we chat about success and goals a lot, this is about not becoming hyper-focused on results without enjoying the process, appreciating the opportunities that might come up along the way, or celebrating the milestones and new skills you learn as part of the process. It's taken over 200 episodes but we finally had a hit-record-button mishap, and the chaos of this week's episode doesn't end there. From long-haul flights and weddings to road trips and beard competitions, it would be fair to say there's *breadth* to this episode. Plus we have a discussion about working out who you're really making those decisions for and what your motivation is. Why? Well it's easy to get caught up in what everyone else wants you to do, whether it's career-wise, relationships, or even wedding traditions (we're both planning weddings at the moment, did we mention that?) but what really matters is that you know why *you* are doing it and why it's so important to course-correct if something isn't quite sitting right. We have a new intro and it's safe to say we're still adjusting! But this week we are chatting about the exciting Legally Blonde news, what films Charlotte will be watching on the plane and our various levels of cringe when it comes to Rom Coms. But this week we're also chatting about curating your own milestones and while we both are getting married this year, we feel like there is more to milestones than the traditional ones that society tells us we should be excited about. You can define your own milestones and depending on your hobbies, lifestyle, industry, background, sexual orientation and a million other things, your milestones are unique to you and more than anything should be a chance to celebrate things that are important to you with people who care about you. Not everything has to be motivated by goals, financial gain or social pressure. Social media and hustle culture make us think that the purpose of a hobby is to monetise it or turn it into a business. But not everything needs to become a side hustle, you can and should do something purely for the enjoyment of it - like we do for this podcast!
