Back in the mists of time, Maggie O'Farrell was one of my very first guests on The Shift. So, as she celebrates the 25th anniversary of the publication of her very first novel, After You'd Gone and we wait with bated breath for the movie of her smash hit bestseller Hamnet (starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, directed by Oscar-winning director of Nomadland, Chloe Zhao, and co-written by Maggie and Chloe), I thought now was a good time to revisit our conversation from back in 2020. Since then Maggie has of course written the bestselling The Marriage Portrait and gone on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies of Hamnet. Here are the original show notes: This week's guest is the award-winning novelist, Maggie O'Farrell. The author of eight novels, most recently the stunning Women's Prize winner, Hamnet, and one of my favourite memoirs of all time, I Am, I Am, I am. And now she's written a children's book, the absolutely gorgeous Where Snow Angels Go, which is a banker for a Christmas Day teatime animation a la The Snowman if ever I saw one.  While Maggie noses through my bookcase and plays with Sausage the (tail-less) cat, we talk being a social media refusenik, giving voice to women's stories, saying good riddance to the male gaze, why she never thought she was the marrying kind. Oh, and why she still secretly fears someone might take her Women's Prize away! Frankly, if Maggie O'Farrell has imposter syndrome, what hope is there for the rest of us? * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Hamnet and The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell is the choice for this month's Church Times Book Club. On the podcast this week, Caroline Chartres, who has written this month's Book Club reflection on the book, is in conversation with Sarah Meyrick. Maggie O'Farrell transports the reader to Renaissance Italy in her latest historical novel The Marriage Portrait. It is based on the true story of teenage bride Lucrezia di Cosimo de' Medici, the inspiration for Robert Browning's poem “My Last Duchess”, who died only a few years after marrying the esteemed Duke of Ferrara. In the book, O'Farrell reimagines the Duchess's fraught final years, following her journey from the safety of her childhood home in Florence to the remote hunting lodge where her husband keeps her captive. Sections of the story are told from the first-person perspective, and Lucrezia's fear that her husband is out to kill her is palpable. The Marriage Portrait is published by Tinder Press at £9.99 (Church Times Bookshop £8.99); 978-1-4722-23880-3. https://chbookshop.hymnsam.co.uk/books/9781472223883/marriage-portrait?vc=CT002 Caroline Chartres is a contributing editor to the Church Times. Sarah Meyrick is assistant editor of the Church Times and is to be its next editor. Her latest novel is Joy and Felicity (Sacristy Press, 2021). Charles Byrne was an 18th-century “Irish giant” whose skeleton was stolen and put on display against his wishes. 240 years after his death, he is being remembered in a new electro acoustic opera rather than as a museum-piece curiosity. Dawn Kemp of the Hunterian Museum discusses removing the famous skeleton from their collection, and composer, musician, and robotic artist Sarah Angliss tells us about her new opera, Giant, which celebrates Byrne on stage, and is opening the Aldeburgh Festival. The Irish writer Maggie O'Farrell's last novel “Hamnet” is now playing on stage at the Globe Theatre and won the 2020 Women's Prize for Fiction. Her latest “The Marriage Portrait” has made it onto the 2023 shortlist, and was an instant Sunday Times Bestseller. Both focus on the lives of women hidden in history behind men of influence. In the next of our series meeting the Women's Prize finalists, we'll be finding out what it is about these stories that inspire her, and how it feels to make the shortlist for a second time. It is commonly accepted, including here at Front Row, that creativity is a good thing. But two new books: Samuel. W. Franklin's The Cult of Creativity and Against Creativity by Oli Mould, challenge that view, arguing that creativity is a recent invention and that the artistic impulse has been co-opted by the capitalist military industrial complex. Both authors discuss their ideas with Tom Sutcliffe. Presenter: Tom Sutcliffe Producer: Julian May

“They have traveled for most of the day using what little daylight the season offers leaving Ferrara Dawn and riding out to what he had told her was a hunting lodge, far in the northwest of the province. 'But this is no hunting lodge' is what Lucrezia had wanted to say when they reach their destination, a high walled edifice of dark stone flanked on one side by dense forest and on the other by a twisting meander of the Po River. She would have liked to turn in her saddle and ask, 'Why have you brought me here?'”  That's Maggie O'Farrell, reading from her brilliant new novel The Marriage Portrait, a finalist for our 2022 Book of the Year. In front of a live audience at the Barnes & Noble in Eastchester, New York, Maggie takes us to Renaissance Florence and behind the scenes of her page-turning historical novel and its untamable heroine, the writers who inspired her (from Robert Browning and Wilkie Collins to Daphne DuMaurier and Patricia Highsmith), her writing process (including Post-It notes and pinboards), what's next for her and more with Poured Over's host, Miwa Messer.   Featured Books: The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell My Cousin Rachel by Daphne DuMaurier The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins O Caledonia by Elspeth Barker Matrix by Lauren Groff   Poured Over is produced and hosted by Miwa Messer and mixed by Harry Liang. This novel set in Money, Mississippi starts with a brutal murder which detectives Ed and Jim struggle to solve.  Satirical with absurdist elements and a whodunnit, but confronting racism and lynching in America, it has been described as a 'gory pulp revenge fantasy' (Bookforum) and 'explosive in every way' (Dua Lipa). Summary: Welcome to Nonfiction November! Holly and Devin are kicking off this month by diving into two very different nonfiction books: Holly's, a deep dive into serial killer Ted Bundy, and Devin's, a deep dive into the full spectrum of human emotion and how they can enrich our lives. Couldn't be more different, but Holly and Devin unite over the place of nonfiction in their lives and how books like these can impact them both inside and outside their wheelhouses.  As a reminder, you can review and purchase all books we discuss and mention on this podcast through the Hearts & Daggers Bookshop site; any book you purchase using our affiliate links supports our show.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:47): Holly discussed The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule, an in-depth, journalistic approach to the story of Ted Bundy and the murder spree he went on between 1973 - 1978. Rule, who had been a journalist investigating the murders and disappearances of women in Washington State in the early 70s, worked with Bundy at a crisis call center and was contracted to write her book before the killer was identified. Holly's key takeaways were:  Bundy's murders spanned 4 states but always involved a similar profile for victim; young, brunette women with long hair parted down the middle (As a curly-haired blonde, Devin felt comforted by this - even though he died in 1989). He would routinely fake a broken arm or a broken-down car to engage with them.  The most impactful and interesting aspect of the book was Ann Rule's own personal connection to Ted and the cases. Her journey discovering that her friend was a suspect, denial and confusion, and eventual horrifying realization and acceptance as the situation turned ever more dire and damning carried the reader through the book in a unique way.  Holly also wants to underline: never hitchhike, keep your doors and windows locked, avoid walking alone esp at night, look like you know where you're going when walking (even if you don't), and never go to someone's car with them.  The Heart (32:26): Devin discussed Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown, a gorgeously formatted book that archives the eighty-seven emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. Brown uses descriptions and overviews of these emotions as a conduit to drive home a wider message; the better we can understand and articulate how we feel about our lives, the more deeply we can connect to those around us. Devin's key takeaways were: Applying qualitative research to something as elusive and difficult to understand as the spectrum of human emotion allows the reader to more deeply inspect their own experiences, unconscious drivers, and relationships with others with both passion and scientific precision.  Brown categorizes emotions into buckets that also serve to augment the reader's experience and sense of unification across feelings and experiences all humans have. Devin's favorites were “Places we go when it's beyond us” (awe, wonder, confusion, curiosity, interest, surprise) and “Places we go with others” (compassion, pity, empathy, sympathy, boundaries, comparative suffering) The foundational takeaway from Devin from this book is being able to articulate not just four emotions (happy, sad, angry, horny) but many more and how the simple act of being self-aware enough to name a nuanced emotion will revolutionize our relationships. Hot On the Shelf (54:51): Devin: Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood Holly: The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell What's Making Our Hearts Race (57:13): Devin: Delta Airlines' flight experience Holly: Los Angeles Haunted Hayride Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

She also visited Bunches of Grapes bookstore and FOUR libraries on the island – West Tisbury, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, and Edgartown. Chris attended a virtual event through the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library with Raymond Clemens who shared some of the earliest maps in their current exhibition, The World in Maps, 1400-1600. Check out the link in our show notes to watch Ray's presentation. We also had two delicious Biblio Adventures together. The first was a literal Couch Biblio Adventure where we sat on the couch at Book Cougars HQ and ate pizza while watching Malinda Lo's event at Simmons University. Her YA novel LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB was this semester's joint read at Simmons. Days later we were riding the rails to meet Aunt Ellen at Grand Central in Manhattan. After hugs and a pit stop, we took the subway to Brooklyn where we spent the day walking around and experiencing bookish adventures and culinary delights. Stops included: The Center for Fiction, Smith Street Bagels, Books Are Magic, the Brooklyn Public Library at Carroll Gardens, and La Vara, where we were joined by Aunt Ellen's partner Chris. We topped off the day with an author event and saw Maggie O'Farrell talking about her new book, THE MARRIAGE PORTRAIT, at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church. It was a perfect day. We even had time to grab some pastries from Magnolia Bakery before boarding the train home. Lots of books, good food, and great company. Her new graphic memoir THE KEEPER: SOCCER, ME, AND THE LAW THAT CHANGED WOMEN'S LIVES is fantastic! We give it four paws up. Check out this wonderful blurb from another graphic memoirist you may have heard of: “The Keeper is a triumph! Kelcey Ervick's rollicking visual storytelling makes this information-packed lesson in women's sports history both hilarious and surprisingly moving. Do not be deceived by her loose, exuberant drawings—the level of writerly control at play in this beautiful book is prodigious.” - Alison Bechdel, author of the New York Times bestselling Fun Home and The Secret to Superhuman Strength One more thing and then we're putting our noses back into our books! Reminder that our current readalong book is MURDER ON THE RED RIVER by Marcie R. Rendon. Lucrezia de' Medici was only 13 when she was forced to marry Alfonso II d'Estej, the Duke of Ferrara; just 15 when she joined the court of her new husband. By age 16, she was dead. Only her officials portraits survive her. Many years later, Robert Browning wrote a poem based on one of those paintings, which loosely fictionalizes the short marriage of Lucrezia and the possibility that she was murdered by her husband. Maggie O'Farrell goes one step further, and imagines the young girl's whole life, including the short time she spent as a wife in 16th century Italy. In O'Farrell's new novel, “The Marriage Portrait,” Lucrezia knows her sole job is to produce an heir for the duke. But when no heir is forthcoming, and the duke grows increasingly unsatisfied, she worries that he might kill her to make way for someone more fertile. Could she be right? Or is her bored and quick mind simply connecting dots that aren't there? “The Marriage Portrait” deftly tells Lucrezia's story through her own lens and perspective. This week, on Big Books and Bold Ideas, MPR News host Kerri Miller spoke with O'Farrell about what inspired her to write the novel, why even her villains are complex, and how she intends to give women silenced by history their voice back. Guest: Maggie O'Farrell is the author of many novels, including the much-lauded “Hamnet” and the freshly released “The Marriage Portrait.” She lives in Edinburgh. Maggie O'Farrell's last novel, “Hamnet,” the fictional story of William Shakespeare's son who died at age 11, was an international best-seller. Her new novel, “The Marriage Portrait” also delves into history. O'Farrell was struck by Robert Browning's poem, “My Last Duchess,” which itself was inspired by a painting of a young Italian woman who died in 1561, at the age of 16, just a year after she was married to the Duke of Ferrara. But did she die? Or was she poisoned? “The Marriage Portrait” reminded us of Lauren Groff's 2021 hit, “Matrix,” set in medieval France. So for this week's deep track, we thought we'd bring you the Talking Volumes interview MPR News host Kerri Miller did with Groff on the stage of the Fitzgerald Theater last year, where Groff describes the history, the art and the music that inspired her writing. Guest: Lauren Groff is the author of six books. “Matrix” is her most recent, released in 2021. To listen to the full conversation you can use the audio player above. The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell.  Based on the life of Lucrezia de Medici who lived in Florence in the 16th Century and was the subject of the famous Robert Browning poem My Last Duchess. At the age of 15 she was married off to the Duke of Ferrara who commissioned a marriage portrait of his new wife, inviting a renowned portrait artist to take on the job. Lucrezia though felt unwelcome in her new home where it was clear that her sole responsibility was to provide a son and heir and when that didn't happen, after less than a year, became increasingly certain that the Duke had plans to kill her. Wonderful historical fiction.    Owning It by Brad Smeele. Story of a world champion wakeboarder who had a terrible accident on the water and has been quadriplegic ever since. It's a big book – nearly 500 pages – which is remarkable given that he wrote it by using a mouthstick to tap out every single letter onto a tablet. I have to say, he shares a lot – perhaps not always wisely – but I guess it highlights what he's lost. Is becoming quite the inspirational/motivational speaker.  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The woman in the portrait is perfect. So why does she feel so terrified, so alone? Florence, the 1560s. Lucrezia, third daughter of Cosimo de' Medici, is free to wander the palazzo at will, wondering at its treasures and observing its clandestine workings. But when her older sister dies on the eve of marriage to Alfonso d'Este, ruler of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio, Lucrezia is thrust unwittingly into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage and her father to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood, Lucrezia must now make her way in a troubled court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed. Perhaps most mystifying of all is her husband himself, Alfonso. Is he the playful sophisticate he appears to be before their wedding, the aesthete happiest in the company of artists and musicians, or the ruthless politician before whom even his formidable sisters seem to tremble? As Lucrezia sits in uncomfortable finery for the painting that is to preserve her image for centuries to come, one thing becomes worryingly clear. In the court's eyes, she has one duty: to provide the heir who will shore up the future of the Ferrarese dynasty. Until then, for all of her rank and nobility, her future hangs entirely in the balance.
