A lecture given at L'Abri Fellowship in Southborough, Massachusetts. For more information, visit https://southboroughlabri.org/ by Joshua Chestnut While we may intuitively think of a life of lazy resignation as being diametrically opposed to a life of hyperactive busyness, our ancestors in the faith may have seen things differently and understood these two common ways of life as being symptomatic of some deeper, spiritual problem, i.e. acedia. Sometimes translated as "sloth," acedia originally identified an internal habit of resistance (or laziness) to the Christian calling of loving God and our neighbor. This lecture will consider acedia in its historical context as well as its contemporary instances while considering what might be its remedy. Today, Toni is joined by Mindy Gibbins-Klein, an expert in developing authors and thought leaders. Over the past 20 years, Mindy has trained and coached 1000s in 18 countries and published 14 books that teach how to lead with both head and heart. Mindy explains what a thought leader is and how to become one. She also shares how to use the written word and language to get back in touch with who you are so that you can make progress and help more people. KEY TAKEAWAYS Put your best ideas out there then let people decide for themselves whether you are a thought leader or not. Don´t just publish anything. It has to be good, and you have to write it yourself. Consuming too much of other people´s content clouds your mind and dilutes your ideas. Mindfulness, journalling, and affirmations are powerful, but you have to do them in the right way. Mindy shares how. Spend time reflecting with intention. Every day, pause, ask yourself what went well, and what went wrong, and decide what to work on tomorrow. Writing is powerful. It helps you as well as others. Find good female mentors. You will need several mentors throughout your life. Become a giver. BEST MOMENTS “Dig deep for your expertise and showcase that, and then you'll be known as an expert with proper substance. “ “Part of my work is about helping people get back to themselves.“ “Reflect with intention.“ “Journal these things out but make true statements.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://giving1percent.com/ https://mindygk.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5W2AGg2nMo ABOUT MINDY Mindy Gibbins-Klein is an international speaker, coach, and author of 14 books, with her clients publishing over 1,000 titles. Are you a 1% giver? How much of your income goes towards charitable giving and how much time do you spend on self-reflection? Having sold her publishing company, speaker, author and multi-award-winning entrepreneur Mindy Gibbins-Klein found herself blessed with more time to reflect on what really mattered to her. In 2020, Mindy recognised that whilst her income had gone up, her charitable giving had not kept up. She suspected she was not alone and so created a way for others to be more mindful of how they could support charities through thoughtful giving. KEY TAKEAWAY “Many people think they have to have everything all figured out and this stops them because they try to control everything. They have a closed mind. They're not open to new interactions and magical things happening and they simply don't see it because they think this is the way it has to happen.” BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS* The Thoughtful Leader by Mindy Gibbins-Klein - https://amzn.eu/d/8c9Y5pg The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People by Stephen Covey - https://amzn.eu/d/j4kxtdU ABOUT MINDY Mindy Gibbins-Klein is an International Speaker and Coach who teaches people to be thought leaders and thoughtful leaders. Sometimes You Need to Be Someone Else Have you allowed yourself to become the person you are on the inside? We all make decisions that change our life trajectory without much thought. That can lead to feelings of being lost on your life path. Maybe it's time to create a new way of seeing yourself. Using a Transitional Identity is a great way to feel confident when you can't believe in your future. The trick is to focus on the smaller steps to your destination. That will allow you to move away from who you are, yet not jump to who you want to be in one big step. “I'm running a successful small business and laying the foundation for my empire. All I have to do is keep moving.” “I'm a great student. Very soon, I will be a great teacher to others. All I have to do is keep moving.” “I'm incredible at losing 1 pound at a time. Soon, I'll hit my goal and weigh 100 pounds. All I have to do is keep moving.” Transitional Identities are temporary and ever-changing. They are helpful when destinations are hard to see before you take your first step. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In the first hour SKOR North's Judd Zulgad talks about the Timberwolves' comeback win over the Heat to thwart any Jimmy Butler revenge game shenanigans and talks about how he's just fine with a brown winter this year, KSTP's Chris Egert has the latest on Midtown Global Market's newest resident, Eddie McYeti, who is horrifying people this holiday season and has the latest on a group of ice fishers that were rescued after the ice they were fishing on broke off and floated out to the middle of the lake. Hour #2 has the crew find out what exactly a millionaire will REFUSE to leave a tip for, plus discover a few helpful tips to deal with any narcissists you may encounter at holiday gatherings this time of the year. In hour #3 Kristyn Burtt discusses what makes you stiff. No, not like that. The other kind. The bad kind. Celine Dion, for example, has an extremely rare disorder that causes her muscles to stiffen up. Jeffrey Epstein's muscles also stiffened up, but that was from rigor mortis so maybe it doesn't count. Or how about the shock from receiving your medical bill? That'll straighten your legs. On the Family, we philosophize about how people cope with the hand they're dealt. Some of us are born with a barely-functional pancreas and have to deal with the ebb and flow of insulin prices. Some of us are over seven feet tall and can't wear pants ever again. And still others can't agree with their significant other about what to watch. All equally valid concerns. I had a rough weekend a while back, my friends. One Thursday I started to feel sick with the plague my children brought home from school. And I thought I had successfully avoided it.Still, I was feeling well enough to write scripts for one of my solo episodes before resting up. I figured I'd record it on Saturday...after I did rest. And I did. But it was a disaster. I was rambling, coughing, getting winded, and stopping...a lot. It was not quality content.I could have just released that, knowing I had an arbitrary deadline of Monday at 2am ET. But episodes like this —long, no single focus, hard to find a clear story — needed to be tight and helpful. This was not.So I decided to take Sunday and rest some more, hoping Monday would see me with more energy and stamina.Which it did! I re-recorded the entire episode and released it later than usual...but in much better shape. You don't always need to hit your arbitrary deadlines. And while most of this show is dedicated to helping you build a system to not be in the same position I was…well, sometimes it doesn't work out. When that happens, it's better to take a moment and prioritize quality content over a deadline most people won't notice you missed. In a way, the chaotic start to our interview, followed by a calm, cool conversation, is a metaphor for Jordan's business journey this year. See, this isn't just a story about how to hire good people for your business. It's a cautionary tale, and proof that running a business is about always learning and adjusting. Jordan runs an agency of high-level remote assistants. Today, she's telling us her own trials and tribulations with making what seemed to be the right hiring call but ended up plunging her business into a few chaotic months. Don't worry though, through patience and vigilance, she came out on the other side in a much better position. Plus, in the PRO show, we talk about what she's doing for me…and why she's contributed to me potentially leaving Airtable for Notion.Top Takeaways You need to share your mission with your team early on. This ensures that you're both aligned on the same values – which will form a stronger bond than a paycheck. Know when to communicate. Jordan saw that through hiring contractors, they were taking on too much, and as a result, the quality of their work slipped. Clear communication could have prevented the worst outcome for her: loss of clients. Know when to cut ties. Jordan saw that for her agency, a contractor relationship would not work. So she pivoted and decided to hire full-time employees instead. It took several months to find the right fit, but she's happy she didn't rush into the decision. When you do bring on new employees, make sure to have a rock-solid, hands-on training program. This will allow them to start learning and doing, from day 1. In our culture we value productivity… … not the pause. But, the pauses are often part of the productivity. And, they're how we find healing, renewal, and the energy to move forward. ✅✅✅✅✅ If you've own a cell phone (I know, the technical name is mobile phone, now, and everybody has one), you've probably had unresolvable issues with it, called tech support, and then heard them tell you something like, “Alright, do this for me. Let's perform something called a hard reset. We're going to completely power the thing down, wait a few moments, and then start it back up.” They always promise something that seems absurd for such a simple task as turning the phone off: “That should fix it.” Generally, they're right. It does.

Happy Spooky Wednesday, folks! This week, based on a listener suggestion by Kristy, Kala talks about The Hotel Congress in Tucson, AZ! This hotel has stuck to its historic roots by keeping improvements without losing decor, limiting technology, and embracing its ghosts. Whether it's the spirits of those who worked there or long-gone guests, this place is hopping with paranormal activity! And though the seances may be staged, the personal stories from employees and tourists certainly are not. And Brittany talks about Haley Zega. This woman was lost on a hiking trip when she was 6 years old. Gone for more than two days, you might wonder how such a young child could survive on her own. She remembers help in the form of her imaginary friend, but was it just an imaginary friend or something more? Finally, we finish up with a listener story that is sure to keep you hugging your puppy close! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leftofskeptic/support
When you were little, your parents probably told you to use an inside voice because it wasn't polite to shout. We've all been there, in a crowded room and you want to get someone's attention. Sometimes you have to shout or raise your voice a little bit to get noticed. Well, the internet is a lot like a crowded room when you're competing with so many other messages. To get the attention of visitors to your website, you have to shout a little bit. Online you shout visually. If you're putting a call to action on your website, use all caps. While this is hard to read in long blocks of text, and considered a little rude in an email, it's critical in your call to action. The all cap font stops the reader and makes them pay attention. And now I'm going to shout a little bit to and tell you to look subscribe to More than a Few Words wherever you listen to podcasts.

Don't make assumptions. Always do your best. Listener emails from Taylor (about encouragement) and Laney (sharing book recommendations!)
