What is lithography? Ewa Budka, her lithography prints, and how Mokulito technique became Budkalito

Budka finalised her research on a rarely practiced Japanese printmaking technique called Mokulito. She created her own printmaking technique naming it, Budkalito. With the exciting results of Budkalito, she was invited to give lectures and workshops around the world. The “skin in the game” exhibition from 11 November to 16 December in Hong Kong presents Ewa Budka's lithography prints and paintings. Ewa Budka, New York-based, born and raised in Poland captures her own stories - emotions which, like a tattoo on her skin are visible on her abstract paintings. Budka explores the complexity of having an international career as an artist, art director, model, and recently also a mom, and all which goes with it, the bad and good times - heartbreaks, frustration, happiness, and love. The artist stated “Life is all about changes. 2020 had changed my life, it changed me in many ways. I realised I have many different needs, desires. What I have had learned when I became a Mother is that there are many different Women inside of me. My body has spoken to me in so many different ways that I had to stop, and carefuly check where are coming from all of the whispers. I saw a space-a potential to check and I found in there many different Ewa's. A Mother, a Lover, an Independent strong fighter but also Ewa who wants to be taken care of. It took time to hear them all out, to direct who's speaking when. They all can represent different personality archetypes of Greece Goddesses like Hera, Aphrodite, Anthena, Artemis. All powerful but so different. Finally my Women are all being respectful, friendly, gently living, to each other. It almost feels that they all had been at fight in the past decade, and now finally I see them all. Clearly without a doubt I wouldn't be able to listen to any of them if not the 2020.” #artaapp #storiesbehindart #budkalito #lito #lithography #from #wood #mokulito #workonpaper #abstractart #art #artwork #contemporaryart #artist #artistsofinstagram #exhibition #skininthegame #comingsoon #womxnartists #woman #paper #print

Nick Brandt's new project, "Inherit the Dust" is more relevant than ever before. Wildfires, tornadoes, and dangerous viruses are the top news of 2019 and 2020, and it won't change anytime soon. In a series of photographic panoramas shot in East Africa, celebrated photographer Nick Brandt records the impact of men in places where animals used to roam, but no longer do. Pollution and urban encroachment is the cause of ever decreasing habitat for the natural world and loss of biodiversity. It is time to talk about it, and, more importantly, it is time to do something about it now. Sarah Greene with Blue Lotus Gallery in Hong Kong, despite the coronavirus and the protests, chose to proceed with an exhibition INHERIT THE DUST by NICK BRANDT to reveal the tremendous danger hanging above Hong Kong. Hello dear listeners!   In today's episode, I'm delighted to talk with Indian Jones of our time - James Prosek. We will explore how illustrations and paintings of nature contribute to preserve and inspire people to cherish wildlife. In recent months I've seen more and more art exhibitions related to nature, and today, I have the pleasure to chat with an artist who comes to art through his life-long love of nature. James is an American artist, famous for his detailed portrayal of natural creatures. His best-known work is Trout: An Illustrated History, published at the age of 19 when he was still studying English Literature at Yale.  Gifted with multifaceted talents, James has been capturing biodiversity of the natural world, not only by paintings but also by writing and filmmaking. He has written for The New York Times and National Geographic Magazine and won a Peabody Award in 2003 for his documentary about traveling through England in the footsteps of Izaak Walton.  We started our conversation from exploring James's past and his Indiana Jones-style trips across the entire world. We then explored his art techniques and unique materials he recently worked with. Last but not least, we talked about the long term problem with boundaries between our language and nature and why James is so passionate to change the way how we are classifying, collecting and naming natural creatures. Lastly, please forgive me for the background noise in the first 20 minutes of our discussion, we started our conversation at James's show opening and soon after it began to be very noisy, so we moved to one of the conference rooms which was much better for podcasting. Ps. If you are in Hong Kong between 6 July and 8 September 2019, you must see James's newest show "the Hidden Forests" the Asia Society. First and foremost, wall art gives a second life to ordinary, old and ugly buildings and transforming them into cheerful and extraordinary.  It’s just so cool to give a second life to something! Secondary, I adore street art because is available 24/7 and even in such a busy city as hong kong is, people will find a moment to enjoy any artwork on the way to work or gym. So no matter what you do in life, you can stay connected with art and for a moment just enjoy the cultural side of the city. When I came to Hong Kong in 2009 there was not much wall art on the streets, but in the last decade, the situation has changed. We have many talented street artists and organizations such as HKWalls which supports street art initiatives. One of my favourite artworks which always makes me smile belongs to my incredible guest today -   Elsa Jeandedieu and I had such a pleasure to finally meet her and learn more about her story. I admire Elsa on so many levels. She is the founder of Elsa Jeandedieu Studio which specializes in unique wall textures, murals and wall art in Asia. Welcome to the second part of episode no 7! If you haven't heard yet the first part of episode no 7, let me quickly explain what’s on. I talked with a few very talented artists represented by the Red Chamber gallery. All those artists take part in the affordable art fair 2019 in Hong Kong and I wanted to show how diverse the artists are in point of techniques, missions, and ideas. The first part of the episode showcased artists who have been working with new technologies to create their art. And in this part, I'm thrilled to speak with artists who have been using traditional mediums such as ink paintings but also adding a modern twist, truly presenting the “East Meets West” spirit. The first artist I would like to introduce is Peter Yuill. Peter has this inner talent to tell stories and makes interesting conversations and I could chat with him the entire day and night!  But first of all, I’m a huge fan of his work!  Peter works with complex geometric abstraction. His work is a combination of highly technical and complex ink drawing and painting on paper.  We talked about his exploration of the philosophical and existential desire. And we also discover his obsession with doing all the work by hand and being deeply involved in every aspect of art making. Peter has exhibited around North America and Hong Kong. Recent exhibitions include the massive group exhibition - the 14th Factory in Los Angeles, California, in 2017; Fading Glory at The Cat Street Gallery, Hong Kong; as well as Hidden Streets at Pearl Lam Galleries, Hong Kong SOHO. And now, I would like to introduce to you my second guest - Michell Lie.  Michell started her journey as an artist just two years ago and she still holds a full-time job as a branding manager. She is an incredibly talented artist and on top of that she wants to use her art to help others in needs. Hi Everyone, welcome to episode no 7!  This episode is slightly different, as this time I will talk with a few very talented local artists who will take part in affordable art fair 2019. For people who are not familiar with this show, affordable art fair is a 4 days outlet for mostly emerging artists to show what they are working on and have a chance to find a new audience who will follow in love with their work. This year you can come and see the exhibitions between 17 and 19 May in Convention Center. For me and most precisely Arta this is a great time to showcase the diversity in the local artist scene in Hong Kong. To be more specific, I would like to show how diverse their techniques and materials are, as well as their missions and ideas. With this in mind, I had a pleasure to chat with artists represented by the Red Chamber gallery. Red Chamber is a gallery which puts a lot of effort and heart to promote their artists - and this shows! - it was a pure pleasure to work with such a great team of open minded people, so devoted to art.  I decided to divide this episode into two parts and group artists based on the materials they use to produce their art. The first part of this episode will showcase two artists - Christy Chow and Desmond Lo. The common element between these two artists is that both of them have been using a new, 21st century technologies, to create their artworks. Another common element is that both of them are young and craving to experiment by learning completely new techniques and use new materials to play with. The second part of this episode will showcase another two extraordinary artists - Peter Yuill and Michell Lie who have been using traditional mediums such as ink paintings with a modern twist, truly presenting the “East Meets West” spirit.  Last but not least all 4 artists from both parts of this episode are extremely ambitious, yet their ideas and missions are completely different and it is so refreshing to see how art, can be diverse and beautiful in so many different ways. So, it is finally  time to introduce to you the first artist - Christy Chow. She is an extraordinary women, wife and soon to be mother. On top of that Chow is a Hong Kong based artist who specializes in creating video installations and interactive sculptures that concern humanity, sustainability and social justice. She received the Hong Kong Human Rights Arts Prize in 2017 and has exhibited in Hong Kong, United States, Spain and Singapore. During our chat Christy mentioned a term “lenticular print”  which is a technology mostly used for 3D displays and as printed images will give us an illusion of depth, or the ability to change or move as the image is viewed from different angles.  And now, I would like to introduce to you our second guest - Desmond Lo.  Desmond is a multimedia artist who worked as a motion graphic designer and visual effects artist. He is currently the Creative Director of MMM Studio which specializes in content creation and branding for DJs and music artists.  Inspired by the cyberpunk aesthetics of movies such as Blade Runner or Akira, Desmond Lo‘s creations show Hong Kong that is at the same time familiar yet distant. Lo brings together a number of CGI renders, images produced entirely by the power of new technology yet the images are so real you might think it's a photograph from the future. I talked with Desmond about what he tries to preserve with his artworks and what are the challenges he faced with new ,”social”, media as a young artist. We will also talked about black and white photography which Desmond recently rediscovered and brought back to his daily life.  Desmond Lo: Instagram:  @des.lo Christy Chow: https://www.christy-chow.com Instagram: @christy.chow.art Red Chamber Gallery: http://redchambergallery.com/ Affordable Art Fair: https://affordableartfair.com/fairs/hong-kong

Welcome to episode number 5!  In this episode, we will explore street photography which is one of the most challenging, but at the same time one of the most rewarding types of photography.  I had the pleasure to sit down with one of the master of this genres, Michael Kistler.  Michael is a Hong Kong artist specializing in fine art urban photography and photography education. Originally from Minneapolis, he lived in Tokyo for 10 years before moving to Hong Kong in 2014. A signature element in his work is the often abstract human element and its connection to the city; the urban landscape and its structures provide permanence while people come and go, creating a dynamic environment of fleeting moments. So what exactly we talked about? We tried to understand what is fine street photography and how to develop an eye to capture the right moment in the right place at the right time. We also talked about his cool project - how to mix photography with fashion and graffiti. So if you are looking for new ideas, stay with us!  Michael Instagram:  http://instagram.com/mdkistler/ Micheal Website: www.michaelkistlerphotography.com Michael's adores photography of: Daido Moriyama (https://www.moriyamadaido.com/en/) and Saul Leiter (http://www.howardgreenberg.com/artists/saul-leiter) Micheal would like to hang out: Fan Ho (https://fanhophotography.com/index.html)

This time, I had the pleasure to talk with the incredibly talented artist Ernest Chang. Just imagine that for more than a year you are working full time on a project and once the project is ready, you give it away to some strangers without any control what they will do with it and even encourage them to destroy it. That’s what Ernest did with his entire collection called Tear and Consume and we'll discover the mission behind it and also what the strangers actually did with this destructive power in this episode. So if you are curious, stay with me! We will also talk about how Ernest art is devoted to his community and we will discuss how the acceptance of the community brought him to the higher state of accepting himself as a person and as an artist.
