I'm diving into one of my favourite topics on this week's episode of the Fresh Nest Podcast - this isn't a listener request, it's a Hannah request! We are talking about all things art! And I have so much to say on this that this week's episode is actually the first part of a two part series all about introducing art into your home. Art and decorative objects offer a great opportunity to inject your personality into your home. I am using the term ‘art' really loosely in this context because you certainly do not need any special experience to buy art! Think scarves, clothing, kids' drawings, anything you can display on a surface or a wall basically! For part one, I'm chatting about how to go through the process of choosing art for your home and tons of ideas on how to find affordable art. How Leaf Group is selling advertisers on larger event sponsorships

Advertising has been a tumultuous business for some time now, but the one section of that market that's been holding its own for publishers is events. Part of the reason for that is that brands themselves are realizing that they need to differentiate themselves with consumers, which — according to Lindsey Abramo, the recently appointed CRO of Leaf Group, who was a guest of a live taping of the Digiday Podcast during the Digiday Publishing Summit in Vail, Colorado last month — has opened up an opportunity for Leaf Group to sell it's existing event franchises to sponsors. Leaf Group's art and commerce side of the business, which includes art marketplaces Society6 and Saatchi Art, is not reliant on advertising revenue, according to Abramo. That's a revenue stream that's pretty much specific to its media arm, which includes its editorial brands Hunker, Well + Good and Livestrong brands. But now, advertising is being added to Leaf's other art- and commerce-based events including The Other Art Fair, and through that addition, events have become one of the more lucrative areas of the business, she said. “Not only are our ticket sales up 25%, but so are sponsorship fees, and this is not over last year, this is up over 2019 prices,” said Abramo.

NFTs are bridging the gap between art and technology but many artists (including myself) still don't quite understand what they are and how to do them. In this episode our inspiration is NFT art and its ability to help us explore another stream of income and a look into the future. Unfortunately, there are a lot of scams circulating the internet praying on artists enticing them with quick money for an NFT of their work.  Luckily, our guest, Capucine Jenkins, curator of digital art and NFTs at Saatchi Art is here to demystify the process for us. Class is in session and she's giving us the NFT 101 class so that you can see the opportunities that exist even if you're a traditional artist.  “Much of our goal and objective really is to help artists help growing artists and definitely emerging artists make a livelihood for themselves.” - Capucine Jenkins  Everything you'll need to start considering NFT art:  NFTs are so much more than JPGs  You don't have to be a digital artist to sell NFTs  Art and technology don't have to be in contrast of each other  NFTs are really about intellectual property and assets that allow you control as an artist  Capucine explains the opposing worlds of art before this NFT technology exploded in popularity, and the digital world that now exists for artists to live and thrive in. Capucine says that NFTs give you “a mid-tier place …to be able to have a livelihood.” Because it exists on a technology called the blockchain, there is no middle man, and your royalties, rights as an artist, and proper compensations are baked into these digital contracts called smart contracts.  “There's this understanding that art and tech are in contrast, or even in conflict with each other, when I think NFT's actually do the job of bridging that gap.” - Capucine Jenkins  Connect with Capucine Jenkins:  Website  Linkedin  For full show notes, go to schulmanart.com/238 ++++++++++++++++++++

This week's guest is Alena Kuznetsova, one of Ukraine's leading contemporary artists, who had to flee Kyiv when Russia invaded her country, leaving behind all her paintings and sculptures. We spoke when she managed to get to Lviv, where she was able to stay with a friend to regroup and decided what she was going to do next. We spoke via her phone. Having escaped to Lviv, Alena was able to talk about how in the first few days of the Russian invasion she thought she might be able to stay in Kyiv. But soon with incoming missiles detonating near her studio, it became clear she and her family couldn't stay. Born in Russia with a Russian father, she had come to Ukraine at the age of 5 years old and obtained her passport at 16. When Russia invaded, it was as a Ukrainian that she united with her people is standing up against their oppressor. As an artist Alena had developed a distinctive abstract style and a distinguished reputation, but now in the midst of war it is her citizenship that matters more; politics and saving her country over the loss of her studio and her paintings. But she needs to  survive, and fortunately she has the digital versions of her work which she can sell through Saatchi Art who represent her. This is a way that the rest of us can help her and other artists like her; by buying fine art prints through the online website, drop-shipped straight to us, no matter where Alena finds herself in the coming months. She is determined to stay in Ukraine, if she can, to help make Ukraine's art and culture not only survive this war but rise up even stronger from the ashes. Thanks so much Alena for sharing your personal story, and perspective of what is happening within your country on the ground. I pray that the world unites in giving Ukraine and its people the support they need to secure their freedom and the future of their sovereignty. Thanks also for showing us how to be resilient in the face of a force that doesn't have our best interests in its heart. You can buy fine art prints of Alena's work on www.saatchiart.com/alenakuznetsova and follow her on Instagram @Kuznetsova_artistJoin Lou on Linkedin, or sign up to her mailing list for her newsletter and a free podcast guesting guide. Over the past eight years, Leaf Group (formerly known as Demand Media until 2016) has transformed itself from a SEO-focused content farm to a commerce-driven media company that sold for $323 million to Graham Holdings last June. Much of that transition was done at the hands of CEO Sean Moriarty, who wanted to build a portfolio of expert-led content that readers turn to when making purchases. And now the media side of the business earns about two-thirds of its revenue from its commerce business, Moriarty said on the latest episode of the Digiday Podcast. Moriarty joined Leaf Group after the media company acquired online art marketplace Saatchi Art in August 2014, where he had served as CEO for a year. The addition of the artwork marketplace (and Society6, another marketplace Leaf Group acquired in 2013 that turns its network of artists' designs into buyable HomeGoods) has taught the media properties in the portfolio a lot about e-commerce, he said.

2022 was another big year in the art scene. Gallery openings got canceled, digital viewings had to continue to suffice, and NFT's exploded on to the market. It was really Beeple's collage work, Everydays: The First 5000 Days, sold via Christie's for $69 US million that got everyone stirred up. That was March. Since then, the NFT/crypto market has been a rollercoaster ride. And I'll be honest, it still seems like something pretty foreign to me and probably a lot of artists I know and have spoken to. However, Saatchi Art are looking to change that. My last guest of the season is Monty Preston. Monty is a manager of Art Advisory and Curation at Saatchi Art. This week, we answer a listener question from Maxine, who asked about the best ways to sell art online. This is a huge topic and perhaps a little ambitious for a one-hour episode, but we decided to give it our best shot! In a wide-ranging discussion, we discuss the importance of a website and email list as a "home base" for your marketing, so that no matter where people find you, they can sign up to stay in touch. But we also cover other options and ways to get started if you don't yet have a website, including social media, licensing opportunities and third party websites such as Saatchi Art. And we stress that even when you do have a website, it's not enough to just set it up and then wait for people to arrive. You will always need to drive traffic to your site and finding ways to do this is an important element of your marketing strategy. Hello! You are listening to Curator on the Go Podcast and I am Liza - your host! Today, I had the pleasure of speaking to Toronto-based artist Madeleine Gross.  Madeleine customizes her photographs with paint in a way designed to abstract landscapes but without completely abstracting reality. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design where she gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography, Madeleine intuitively applies gesture, texture, color, and strokes with paint with the idea of emulating an immersive reality for viewers and in turn induces the sensation of actually being there just by looking. The inspiration she finds in nature, light and the effortlessly entertaining pastime of people watching can be felt in her images; with textural color layers and a realistic movement, her images embody the ripped water from a jet sky, ocean waves, the fresh beach breeze. Positive connotations are at the heart of her work, with each of the photographs taken on her trips across the globe, all enhanced by a warm and bright palette applied through a few happy strokes of a brush. Her past clients are KitKat Canada, Fashion Magazine Canada, i-D Magazine, Nike Air Society, Roads Group, among others. Her art was featured at CBC Arts, Fashion Magazine, Saatchi Art, Interview Magazine Germany, Redmilk, etc. I’ve been a big fan of Madeleine’s work and excited to have her as my podcast guest. Enjoy! Find more information about Madeleine at: https://www.madeleinegross.com/contact-us/ https://www.instagram.com/madeleinegross/   Learn more about the show and the podcast host: http://curatoronthego.com/podcast   Before we continue, I want to thank today’s episode sponsor Imagefoundry - a Toronto-based fine art printing boutique that specializes in edition printing, art documentation, editing, custom art reproduction projects and retouching work. Hello Everyone! Welcome, to this episode of arta podcast! This episode is very special to me, as it is the first episode that you can also watch on the freshly made Arta youtube channel! Of course, if you prefer the podcast in audio format, don’t worry, I’ll keep posting it to your favorite podcast platform as usual. I myself am a massive fan of audio as you can listen to it while driving, jogging, shopping, etc. About today's episode: How could an artist capture time, the human form, religion, and violence with a single medium? My guest, Tyler Jackson exploits the beauty and darkness of humanity by integrating music, photography, and painting! We talked about Tyler's exploration of more traditional means such as analog photography, vandalism and traditional easel acrylic/oil painting. Tyler is an artist chameleon, changing his style, materials, and even his name/personas. If you want to know why he is doing it and how the idea works for him, stay with us. I had an interesting conversation on Facebook the other day about the struggle we artists tend to go through because of the nature of our work. Nothing to do with having to be sad and crazy to make art (a dumb myth if I ever heard one), but about the divide between the upper echelon of art consumption that is the auction market and the low end of our world, the regular Joes and Jolenes, that are selling their art on Etsy or Saatchi Art.
