What would you wish for if you could have anything this Christmas? Money? Happiness? A perfect relationship? While these are common desires, what many of us truly long for—often without realizing it—is peace. Yet, peace can feel impossible in a world filled with tension, anxiety, and challenges.Nick Brandt, of Mission City Church in San Antonio, TX, begins a new series. In the first message of our new Christmas series, Missing Peace, we dive into the powerful promise of Isaiah 26:3, which speaks of “perfect peace” for those whose minds are steadfast and fixed on God. But what does “perfect peace” look like in real life, especially in the middle of storms, struggles, and uncertainty?Join us as we discover:• Peace isn't found in the absence of problems but in the presence of God.• How to battle for peace in our minds and focus our thoughts on God's unfailing promises.• The supernatural peace Jesus offers—not as the world gives, but as only He can.Whether you're navigating personal storms or seeking hope for 2024, this message is a reminder that true peace begins with fixing your mind and heart on the One who is peace.Missioncity.church_______________________________Sermon Notes are available at missioncity.church/watch/

Welcome to The Big Cat People podcast! We're Jonathan and Angela Scott, award-winning wildlife photographers, authors and conservationists. We have made our name documenting the lives of lions, leopards and cheetahs in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Today's episode is a continuation of our guest interview series, 'In Conversation with The Big Cat People'. In this series, Jonathan and Angie sit down with incredibly talented photographers to discuss the topic of 'Becoming a Photographer'. Today's guest is Nick Brandt, an English photographer focused on the vanishing natural world due to environmental destruction, climate change, and human actions. He directed award-winning music videos like Michael Jackson's "Earth Song" before falling in love with East Africa during a shoot in Tanzania. Frustrated with not capturing his feelings for animals, he embarked on his On This Earth Trilogy, aiming to depict animals' essence. Brandt founded the Big Life Foundation in response to escalating poaching in Africa, protecting wildlife and ecosystems. His projects like "Inherit the Dust" and "This Empty World" depict the impact of human development on animals and humans. His work captures the critical moment of the Anthropocene, reflecting on climate change's consequences. Brandt's recent series in Fiji addresses climate change without featuring animals. This podcast series is a continuing effort to educate and inspire our audience.

Sean and I talk about what it means to create meaningful work. Other topics are how to deal with creative challenges, venture into new projects and evolve as an artist. At the end we also tackle the question how AI might change photography. „The sooner you stop listening to the social media score, the sooner you'll be able to start on a journey to becoming a great photographer and realizing that all that stuff is pointless.“ Sean Tucker In a previous episode we talked about his book „The Meaning in the Making“.  This time we met in Cologne, Germany, where he was to give a talk about what it means to lead a creative life. And in a way that is also what we talked about in this interview. It was a real pleasure to sit down with Sean. I enjoy his philosophical way of approaching photography instead of obsessing over gear. The camera is just a tool that we have to master – but then what? Sean reminds us to ponder our reasons why we pick up a camera. He says: „What are you building and why? And think longterm!“ I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.  Half way through you'll hear a snippet of the audio that comes with the first issue of Seans new magazine called „Parable“.  In case you haven't done already – please check out Seans YouTube-Channel and get a copy of his book „The Meaning In The Making“*.  Both are tremendous resources if you want to grow as an artist and storyteller.  You find all the links in the shownotes or on the website at: https://www.gatesieben.de/podcast/sean-tucker Sean Tucker on the internet: Webseite: https://www.seantucker.photography/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/seantuckerphoto Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/seantuck/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/seantuckerphoto If you are a first time listener of the podcast and like what you here – please check out the other interviews in English.  As I mentioned there are two previous episodes with Sean. A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Nick Brandt's photographic series always relate to the devastating impact that humankind is having on both the rapidly disappearing natural world and now on itself, as a result of environmental destruction, climate change and human actions. In the East African trilogy, On This Earth, A Shadow Falls Across The Ravaged Land(2001-2012), Nick established a style of portrait photography of animals in the wild similar to that of humans in a studio setting, shooting on medium format film, and attempting to portray animals as sentient creatures not so different from us.In Inherit the Dust(2016), Nick photographed in places in East Africa where the animals used to roam. In each location, life size panels of unreleased animal portrait photographs were erected, setting the panels within a world of explosive human development. It is not just the animals who are the victims in this out of control world, but also the humans.Photographed in color, This Empty World(2019) addresses the escalating destruction of the East African natural world at the hands of humans, showing a world where, overwhelmed by runaway development, there is no longer space for animals to survive. The people in the photos are also often helplessly swept along by the relentless tide of ‘progress'. Each image is a combination of two moments in time shot from the exact same camera position, once with wild animals that enter the frame, after which a set is built and a cast of people drawn from local communities. The Day May Break (2021) is the first part of a global series portraying people & animals impacted by environmental destruction. Photographed in Zimbabwe and Kenya, the people in the photos have all been badly affected by climate change - displaced by cyclones that destroyed their homes, displaced & impoverished after years-long severe droughts. The photos were taken at 5 sanctuaries/conservancies. The animals are almost all long-term rescues, due to everything from poaching of their parents to habitat destruction & poisoning. These animals can never be released back into the wild. Now habituated, it was therefore safe for strangers to be photographed close to the animals in the same frame.Nick has had solo gallery and museum shows around the world, including New York, London, Berlin, Stockholm, Paris and Los Angeles. All the series are published in book form. Born and raised in London, where he originally studied Painting and Film, Nick now lives in the southern Californian mountains. In 2010, Nick co-founded Big Life Foundation, a non-profit in Kenya/Tanzania employing more than 300 local rangers protecting 1.6 million acres of the Amboseli/Kilimanjaro ecosystem. On episode 199, Nick discusses, among other things:Why he moved to the USAHis 18 ‘wasted' years making filmsHis first trilogy of projects: On This Earth, A Shadow Falls Across The Ravaged LandHaving a niche that enabled him to start making a livingOnly taking photographs to exist on printsInherit the DustGoing in to each project both ‘excited and scared shitless'This Empty WorldThe Day May BreakHow he was personally impacted by wild fires at home in CaliforniaThe story of Kuda and Sky IIHis level of optimism about climate changeReferenced:Martin McDonaghRichard AvedonIrving PennArnold NewmanGreta Thunberg Website | Instagram“Every project I go into I have no bloody clue whether it's gonna work. We are back with our third installment of the Artists Asking Artists Series on the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen Podcast.  This week's podcast, Episode 289, features two of my favorite nature and landscape photographers, Guy Tal and Alex Noriega. When I first conceived of the idea of creating this series for the podcast, Guy and Alex were the first two photographers that came to my mind knowing that Guy has been such an inspiration to Alex and both of them have been such a huge inspiration to me. I honestly believe this might be one of my favorite episodes of the podcast ever recorded, so I think you will really enjoy it! Alex did a wonderful job coming up with questions for Guy and Guy was an amazingly humble and generous guest, as always.  On this week's episode, we discuss: Suffering, depression, and artistry, Choosing to live close to nature, The importance of confidence as photographers, How Guy developed his connection to Utah, Equivalence in nature photography, Grand Landscapes and creativity, Leaving a more meaningful life through photography, The relationship of money and creativity, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and landscape photography, Perfectionism in landscape photography, And a lot more! „Anger as a motivator of action is a good thing – because you are using it to constructive ends.“   Das sagt mein Gast in dieser Folge – Nick Brandt. The themes in Nick Brandt's photographic series always relate to the destructive impact that humankind is having on both the natural world and now humans themselves too. Nearly twenty years ago Nick Brandt started photographing the wild animals of Africa as an elegy to a dis-appearing world. After some years, seeing the escalating environmental destruction, he felt an urgent need to move away from that kind of work and address the destruction in a much more direct way. This led to the series, Inherit the Dust (2016) and This Empty World (2019). These were mainly about habitat loss and biodiversity loss, significantly as a result of human ex-pansion and development. Nick established a style of portrait photography of animals in the wild similar to that of the photography of humans in studio setting, shot on medium format film, attempting to portray animals as sentient creatures not so different from us. Nick's The Day May Break (2021) series is the first part of a global series portraying people & animals impacted by environmental destruction. Photographed in Zimbabwe and Kenya, the people in the photos have all been badly affected by climate change - displaced by cyclones that destroyed their homes, displaced & impoverished after years-long severe droughts. The photos were taken at 5 sanctuaries/ conservancies. The animals are almost all long-term rescues, due to everything from poaching of their parents to habitat destruction & poisoning. These animals can never be released back into the wild. Now habituated, it was therefore safe for strangers to be photographed close to the animals in the same frame. Nick has had solo gallery and museum shows around the world, including New York, London, Berlin, Stockholm, Paris and Los Angeles. All of the series are published in book form. In descending order, Nick says the images are best viewed in a gallery, in the book or online full screen on your computer at the very least on your phone. You can discovery his work on his website www.nickbrandt.com Nick is also the co-founder of Big Life Foundation, a non-profit in Kenya/ Tanzania, established 2010. They employ more than 300 local rangers protecting 1.6 million acres of the Amboseli / Kilimanjaro ecosystem. We caught up with Nick at his home in California and if you want to know what word he would add to the dictionary... it rhymes with "schmuck" followed by wit. “East Africa, is just a microcosm, where you can still see open plains shared by so many different people and creatures has a visceral impact on most humans who see it, and fill the most jaded of us with a profound sense of wonder. If we follow our present path of development and rate of destruction, we will see the unique megafauna of Africa disappear. We are living through the antithesis of genesis right now. All those billions of years to reach a place of such wondrous diversity, and then in just a few shockingly short years, an infinitesimal pinprick of time, to annihilate it.” In his newest book, ‘Inherit the Dust', my guest, Nick Brandt, photographer, conservationist and Cofounder of BigLife Foundation, brings into stunning conversation what visualization and conservation together can accomplish to highlight not only in our minds, but on our earth fundamental and necessary changes and a way forward and to become involved.

Nick Brandt's new project, "Inherit the Dust" is more relevant than ever before. Wildfires, tornadoes, and dangerous viruses are the top news of 2019 and 2020, and it won't change anytime soon. In a series of photographic panoramas shot in East Africa, celebrated photographer Nick Brandt records the impact of men in places where animals used to roam, but no longer do. Pollution and urban encroachment is the cause of ever decreasing habitat for the natural world and loss of biodiversity. It is time to talk about it, and, more importantly, it is time to do something about it now. Closing The_Gap

In today’s over-competitive world, the word mediocrity has taken on a decidedly negative connotation. When we say something is mediocre, we mean it is not good, even worse than average. In reality, on any scale by which we can measure the quality of what we produce, something that is of median quality is, by definition, better than 50% of the rest. Is that such a bad place to be? We don’t think so.There are some photographers whose work we admire greatly. Looking at our bookshelves right now we can see books by Steve McCurry, Sebastião Salgado, Nick Brandt, Art Wolfe, and others. If we put our work besides theirs, we can’t help feeling that ours is so much inferior that the only word to define it is mediocre, in comparison. Our first advice to those who feel the same is the following: if you want to overcome your mediocrity, do more work. Study the work of the masters and practice deliberately. If it takes 10,000 hours to become proficient at anything, as Malcolm Gladwell says, then start rolling up your sleeves. There are no shortcuts, but we can guarantee you that you will become better, if you don’t give up.“I know that to paint the sea really well, you need to look at it every hour of every day in the same place, so that you can understand its way.”Claude MonetIn the end, however, you will never be completely satisfied with whatever goal you have achieved, because dissatisfaction is part of human nature and is what drives us to reach even loftier goals.Another piece of advice that we feel we should share is this:Stop comparing your work to that of others. Most of all, never ever compare your work to what you see posted online by those who rake in thousands of likes for each photo they post on Facebook or 500px. That is just a popularity contest and the factors that determine popularity have little or nothing to do with quality. If you do and if you make your satisfaction depend on popularity, we can assure you that you will never be satisfied.“I’ve been woken from enlightened man’s dream / Checkin’ Instagram comments to crowdsource my self esteem.”Kanye WestAppreciate what you have, do not compare yourself to others and every achievement will be more meaningful. Marco and Scott sit in front of their virtual fireplace to look back at the photography inspiration of 2018 and ahead at new projects for 2019. The advice that Scott gives for 2019 is to “embrace where you live and the people around you.”   Marco picked the Armenian-Turkish photographer Ara Gueler (1928 - 2018) as the PPN inspirational photographer of the month. Ara was probably the most influential Turkish photographer so far. He started to work as a photojournalist for a local newspaper in Istanbul in 1950 and was soon sent out to work in the middle east, Asia, North America, and Europe. When Henri Cartier Bresson met Ara, he convinced him to join Magnum. While Ara traveled the world and captured many amazing images with his analog Leica camera on B&W film, most of his work - portraits his hometown Istanbul. His portfolio shows an amazing visual history of the city. And he did not only focus on the spectacular and newsworthy events, but rather the everyday life, the little details, and the normal people. Ara won many awards for his work and also captured famous people like Picasso, Dali, and Churchill. But have a look at his images from Istanbul as your personal motivation to be persistent in capturing everyday life in your own city. There is also a documentary movie about him called “The eye of Istanbul” that is worth checking out. You can see some of Ara’s work on the Magnum website: https://www.magnumphotos.com/newsroom/ara-guler-1928-2018/   In the main part of the show, Scott and Marco discuss some essential inspiration based on the past twelve PPN Camera and Inspiration shows of 2018. Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month:   “On this earth, a shadow falls” by Nick Brandt   Excerpt quote about the book from Amazon DE: “In 2001, Nick Brandt embarked on an ambitious photographic project, a trilogy of books memorializing the fast-disappearing natural grandeur of East Africa. Focusing on some of the world's last great populations of large mammals--elephants, giraffes, lions, gorillas and their kin--he created two of the twenty-first century's most popular photographic books: the instant bestsellers On This Earth (2005) and A Shadow Falls (2009). Portraying East Africa's animals with a solemnity and empathy usually reserved for human subjects, Brandt's photographs "tell us, in a way that is beyond words, that we do not own this planet, and are not the only beings living on it who matter," as philosopher Peter Singer writes in an essay in this new volume.…”   Amazon US: http://a.co/d/4NOYWxo Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2Acndbh Links to Scott Bourne: Web: http://scottbourne.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/scottbourne Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bourne.scott/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/scottbourne   Links to Marco Larousse: Web: www.MarcoLarousse.com Twitter: @HamburgCam Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marco.larousse/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MarcoLarousse1   Links to PPN: Web: www.PhotoPodcasts.com Twitter: @Photopodcasts Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/photopodcasts/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWaUn2M1BBoecISFEOJGRCg Please support our show by using our B&H affiliate link (click here) that will not cost you a penny more than when you are buying at B&H without our link.

Today we cap off the trilogy of Big Life Foundation, with my guest Richard Bonham, co-founder and keystone of the trio of creators in the model of Big Life's structure. Richard grew up in Kenya, witnessing first-hand the increase in human population closely followed by changes in land use, and thus the wildlife, coupled with the increase in human-wildlife conflict. By creating clear links between land use, value and benefit, turned into an economic model where community ‘buy-in' is critical to the success of any program, Big Life is a lesson in contemporary conservation- which is to bring innovative strategies and collaborative partnerships between communities, NGOs, national parks and government agencies, that the underlying vision and mission is one where resources- people and wildlife and land use-support and elegantly engage locals and visitors alike toward meeting term conservation.

Conservation Economics 101: How do we preserve the African pastoralist lifestyle and cultural heritage, while also securing the landscape and the predators who live within it? In 2003, my guest Tom Hill and his colleague Richard Bonham, co-Founder of BigLife Foundation, created the Predator Compensation Fund, an innovation in wildlife conservation strategy that has proven highly successful at saving the great predators of the region– especially lions, reversing their otherwise imminent extinction in the very cradle of their existence. In 2012, Tom helped to conceive, fund, and administer the first-ever Maasai Olympics, a sports alternative to lion hunting for Maasai warriors of the Amboseli-Tsavo ecosystem. Incorporating Western business concepts modified to fit the needs of modern pastoralists is a model for the future. When everyone has a stake in the outcome or consequences, working together is the only way forward.

There are some photographs that just stick with you — images that once you see them, you simply can't unsee. It happens across virtually all genres of photography. A single image, a particular project or an entire body of work seeps into our being and becomes a point of reference along an internal visual continuum. When I first saw the work of Nick Brandt, it was unlike anything I had ever seen. His photographs taken in East Africa transcended any wildlife photography that I had seen before. Nick is somehow able to photograph the souls of the animals, not just their image or likeness. In his newest body of work, called Inherit the Dust, Nick returns to East Africa to show how habitat loss as a result of population explosion and urbanization are dramatically changing the landscape and threatening biodiversity and the continued existence of species that roamed the plains of Africa for thousands of years prior to the proliferation of man. It's a fascinating conversation and an incredibly powerful body of work. LINKSBig Life FoundationAmboseli ParkFitzcarraldoApocalypse NowThe GodfatherGodfather, Part IIThe ConversationThe Secret Life of Walter Mitty CONNECT WITH NICKWebsite: nickbrandt.com MUSICPlease Listen Carefully (Jahzzar) / CC BY-SA 4.0

Nick Brandt is one of the more important photographers working in fine art today. His entire cause and mission is wrapped around stopping the rampant poaching problem in East Africa. Nick photographs animals as portraits. He doesn't use telephoto lenses as he prefers to photograph his subjects as one would people. This is a painstaking practice that involves extreme patience and dedication and this shows clearly in the work he produces. Brandt works in a hybrid film and digital process. He photographs using film on a Pentax 67 camera with modified lens (creating a soft focus, tilt-shift effect). The film is scanned and toned in the computer before the works are rendered as digital prints.
