"Round and round the garden... like a teddy bear?!"It's the annual Two Geeks Halloween special, and this year we look back at the downright terrifying 1992 one-off BBC mockumentary: Ghostwatch.Starring Michael Parkinson, Sarah Greene and Craig Charles, the special spooked the entire UK when it aired, with many believing it was a real broadcast from a haunted house. While many loved it, it was met with criticism from many, and had real-life tragic consequences. To this day, we're still terrified by it!We discuss:Tom's 'real' ghost story that made him believe in ghostsWhy Crimewatch and Casualty were scarier than they should have beenMichael Parkinson's surprisingly excellent acting
On Halloween Night 1992, the BBC aired Ghostwatch, which purported to be a live investigation into a house and family that had been plagued by poltergeist activity. The studio segments were hosted by Michael Parkinson, while children's presenter Sarah Greene explored the house and interviewed the family at the center of the haunting. Things started to go very wrong and the show ended in disaster. Due to a quirk of scheduling, a large part of the audience didn't realise that it was all fake. Ghostwatch is frequently listed as one of the scariest TV moments of all time. Ghostwatch was written by Stephen Volk and directed by Lesley Manning. Comics writer and artist Nick Roche joins us to relive his experience of watching Ghostwatch, aged 13, dressed as Batman for Halloween. Nick is @NickRoche. His orignal graphic novel Scarenthood is out now and he's currently the robot designer for Transformers:EarthSpark on Nickolodeon. Alan is @alan_maguire. It's episode 295…and what big eyes you have, what big hands you have. Ghostwatch (1992) was broadcast ‘as live' on BBC 1, on Halloween night in 1992, and saw TV stalwarts Michael Parkinson and Sarah Greene trying to prove the existence of the paranormal by taking a camera crew to ‘the most haunted house in Britain'. While the show documented the Early family's suffering at the hands of Mr Pipes, the poltergeist, the real story began after the show's broadcast, where tens of thousands felt duped by its immaculate recreation of 1990s live broadcasting tropes. We break down an underrated shout for the most influential horror movie of all time, discuss a directorial tour-de-force that left a nation unable to trust some of its most beloved presenters, ponder the various reasons for the furore that followed its broadcast and wonder whether Ghostwatch could ever be made today. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: the studio's...completely dark. Just... just blackness. Next time on the main feed, we're watching Censor (2021), while on the Patreon we're looking at cult classic Possession (1981).
Editor's note: Beacon was created in 1913 from Matteawan and Fishkill Landing. 150 Years Ago (May 1874) A litter of six foxes was removed from a den at Mr. Snook's farm at Low Point [Chelsea] and killed. In the hole were the remnants of a turkey, goose, hen, woodchuck and two weasels. A man walking along the tracks near Dutchess Junction was crossing the drawbridge when trains approached from both directions. He saved himself by jumping into the water. The Savings Bank in Fishkill Landing installed an iron front manufactured at Stanton's works in Newburgh. Swift's Hall, a former church, was sold at Matteawan to Horatio Nelson Swift, known as "the lawnmower man" because of his innovations in that industry. After a reader threatened to punch him over an article, a reporter for the Newburgh Telegraph commented that "he's an idiot who thinks or believes that a reporter can please everybody." The Sunday School teachers and students at St. Luke's at Matteawan presented Dr. Duncan, the church's pastor for nearly 20 years, with a gold watch. The Matteawan Enterprise folded. The competing Fishkill Standard attributed the closure to "the fact that there is room and patronage sufficient for but one newspaper in this neighborhood." Made despondent by illness, Richard Omerod, 57, of Matteawan, a felt skirt printer at the seamless clothing plant, killed himself with a razor. He was survived by his wife and four children. Passengers on the northbound express arriving in Poughkeepsie reported large fires on the Fishkill Mountains as the train emerged from the Highlands. Charles Hoag was killed when his team became unmanageable and crossed the tracks in front of a train. The horses also died. After a young clergyman in Brockport commented that the women in town could make rich cake but not good bread, he received loaves from 14 single women in his congregation. 125 Years Ago (May 1899) A northbound express hit four brickyard employees near Dutchess Junction, killing one and seriously injuring the others. The men said they did not see the train until it was almost upon them. Fishkill Landing officials borrowed a road-scraping machine from Cold Spring. C.A. Palmer of Fishkill Landing, and formerly of Cold Spring, was credited with taking the first photograph of Washington's Headquarters in Newburgh 36 years earlier. Michael Sliney, a model prisoner at the Matteawan asylum, where he had been sent for life after being convicted of murder, accompanied a guard to the pitch-black basement to make a repair. The men made their way with matches, and as the guard lit a new one, Sliney hit him with an iron pipe. The men grappled in the darkness until the physicians upstairs heard the guard's cries. A few years earlier, Sliney had starred in a minstrel performance at the prison, but praise for his acting brought him notoriety and attention to his crime, so he withdrew. The debate team from Haldane High School visited Matteawan High School to discuss the question: "Resolved, that the U.S. construct and operate the Nicaragua canal." [The U.S. abandoned plans to build the passage after it purchased interest in the Panama Canal.] A service at the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church at Fishkill Landing ended in chaos. The Rev. S.V. Gumbs had been investigated but exonerated by the trustees after he called several times on Alice Hunt, which led to "talk" in the congregation. During a baptism, Alice's sister, Emma, apparently having taken offense at Addie Henry's role in the episode, punched her in the face, prompting a fight that led to a steward, Thomas Lefevre, being thrown through a window. A Cold Spring man who rode his bicycle to a Matteawan saloon came out to find someone had slashed its tire. About 500 brickyard workers went on strike for higher wages and lower daily quotas. Most employers granted the demands and the men returned to work. 100 Years Ago (May 1924) Sarah Greene left her $5,000 estate [about $92,000 today] to the Highland Hospital, ap...

Good To Know... ‘Ghostwatch', a Halloween drama in the style of a documentary, reached 11 million viewers on its first and only UK broadcast on BBC 1, on 31st October, 1992. It starred Sarah Greene, Craig Charles, Mike Smith, and - in a stroke of genius - trusted veteran broadcaster Michael Parkinson, who became possessed by the voice of ‘Pipes' as the programme reached its terrifying climax. The show caused outrage for its disturbing content and the way it blurred the line between fact and fiction. Most of the 30,000 complainants didn't believe the events portrayed were real; they were simply distressed that the BBC would make a horror drama that borrowed the visual language of current affairs television. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why the entire cast and crew were holed up in a Chiswick sailing club during the transmission; consider how the show's pioneering style influenced the likes of Derek Acorah and ‘Most Haunted'; and document the astonishing effect the show allegedly had on young viewers… Further Reading: • ‘Ghostwatch is 30: "It got a reputation as something subversive"' (Radio Times, 2022): https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/fantasy/ghostwatch-oral-history-rt-rewind/ • ‘30 years on, Ghostwatch is still as haunting as ever' (Little White Lies, 2022): https://lwlies.com/articles/30-years-on-ghostwatch-is-still-a-haunting-watch/ • ‘Ghostwatch' (BBC, 1992): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JkEbGMEXVs Love the show? At the end of the day, you do what you have to do....for family. On this episode we're diving into the new show on Apple TV+ that has it's first season on the streaming service now. It's time for 'Bad Sisters'.The Garvey sisters (Sharon Horgan, Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene and Eve Hewson) come under suspicion from life insurance investigators after their brother-in-law's death in this dark comedy series from Horgan..Dark and hilarious is how we like our humor and if you feel similarly then 'Bad Sisters' might be exactly what the doctor ordered to stay in and stream on a cold winter's night. We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with composer Tim Phillips to talk about how he got the show, the job of a composer when trying to find the tone of the piece, working with the one and only PJ Harvey and so very much more....

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on December 11th 2022 A few weeks ago, around about HALLOWEEN, WARREN CUMMINGS and I gathered for one of our little chats about our recent television highs and lows, and, as is often the case with us, we started out with little in the way of a plan, but just thought it might be nice to see where the conversation took us. With thoughts of GHOSTIES and GHOULIES being much on WARREN'S mind, he felt like talking about BBC's GHOSTWATCH, the controversial pseudo-documentary drama first broadcast on HALLOWEEN night in 1992 which featured MICHAEL PARKINSON, SARAH GREENE, MIKE SMITH and CRAIG CHARLES (amongst others) trying – and in a large part succeeding – to terrify the nation in a faked live broadcast that attempted to produce proof of certain psychic phenomena from a supposedly haunted house in Northolt, Greater London. The programme's now legendary status as a television phenomenon seems to be mostly down to the estimated one million telephone calls that the BBC received in reaction to this much misunderstood drama, when a large proportion of its audience were convinced that it was genuine, and, despite several home media releases over the years, perhaps because of this hullaballoo, the programme itself was never repeated. Regular listeners to VISION ON SOUND might well be wondering just why this wasn't a show we put out at the end of October, during the season of the witch, but, as you know, I'm generally not all that great at tying the show to specific moments in the calendar, and we recorded a little too near to that date to get the show out in time. However the conversation does also touch upon the notion of the Christmas Ghost Story, which makes it slightly appropriate to THIS time of the year. We also talk about several other television spoofs, and, fortunately we even natter briefly about MORTIMER AND WHITEHOUSE: GONE FISHING which takes us off into far friendlier waters, and means that I, for one, might manage to get to sleep tonight. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show. Episode segments

Last Week Paul and Eli pulled apart what made Tiswas and Swap Shop work, and this week it's part two of their Saturday Morning Showdown! The 2nd generation of kid's breakfast TV shows were Number 73 on the ITV regions and Saturday Superstore from the BBC. Both are very different to each other, and in some respects, from the trailblazing programmes that came before them. The question is, “Which is the ULTIMATE show?” Will nostalgia cloud our opinions or has distance made us more critical? Which one has Sarah Greene in? That will probably be the best one. Ahem. The Cheap Chaps have amassed another collection of clips to review as well as some of the purchasable merchandise that came with the shows at the time of broadcast! You can expect tie-in books, novelty songs and even something lovely to pin to your lapel! At the end of the day, only one of these shows can be crowned Overlord of Saturday Morning and Paul and Eli have a lot to think about in this proper chunky edition of the economy comedy podcast. They also have a LOT of angry opinions on Mike Reid, Paul reveals his childhood crushes and Eli reveals WAY too much about his local swimming pool antics! It's a shocker! Somewhere in between the mucky talk, weird asides and bitter rants, there is an actual podcast in here! Maybe it's because Paul & Eli are tired, maybe its because the early dark nights stir something within them or maybe it's because their guest forgot to turn up for the recording, either way, the Cheap Chaps are in a proper mood this week. It's a big old chunky episode with TWO big competition segments. In The Price of Shite, tempers and passions flare up when Paul & Eli come to a head over the (always shoddy) rules! Paul reveals how much he hates monkeys and Eli revels in his memories of late night, low budget TV shows. Later in the episode, it's time for another Gannon's Golden Games. In this edition they tackle "Mike Reid's Pop Quiz" board game which takes them on a trip down the "1980s Radio DJs" rabbit hole. Please brace yourself accordingly. We just hope The Queen and Sarah Greene never listen to this week's episode! PLEASE don't tell them! A six-time Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA) nominee, Deirdre was awarded Best Lead Actress (Film) 2015 for her role as Christina Noble opposite Liam Cunningham, Sarah Greene and Brendan Coyle in Stephen Bradley's feature Noble. What's the most convincing horror movie you've ever seen?Today on Cult Talks: Weird Shit, we are still at Bigfoot Ridge, but we've moved on from Grassman and Jim... kind of.Today's episode discusses fictional horror movies that were presented convincingly enough to fool people into thinking they were real.First, we talk about the genius (and a bit dickish) marketing of 1999's The Blair Witch Project, before we hear the tale of The McPherson Tape, a 1989 movie that is figuratively, and literally, found footage.Next, we take a look at BBC's epic fuck up in presenting Ghostwatch on Halloween night 1992, a pretty great supernatural horror movie that nearly perfectly imitated a live broadcast. And thus, a generation of English viewers were traumatized.Let's get weird.
We talk to Stephen Volk - Screenwriter and Novelist who created the landmark TV drama Ghostwatch. What was you doing on Halloween night back in 1992? I was sat at my friend's house watching the BBC and a show that would have us all screaming at the screen. We knew all along it was a Drama and not real life even though it was presented by Michael Parkinson, Sarah Greene, Mike Smith and Craig Charles - of course we did.... didn't we? Almost thirty years later, 'Pipes' is still as terrifying to this very day (just that name alone send chills - 'Pipes'). It was a pleasure to chat to the show's creator all about his career and this landmark TV event that had 11 million viewers on it's broadcast and received thousands of phone calls - many of which were complaints! Never to be repeated and hidden by the BBC, it truly was and is, a one of a kind event and it was amazing to chat to Stephen all about it as we approach Halloween! This episode is brought to you by our friends Dead Skull Coffee.https://deadskullcoffee.co.uk/discount/STVPlease visit The Straight To Video Patreon Page to find out how you can help grow this show. https://www.patreon.com/stvpod

Nick Brandt's new project, "Inherit the Dust" is more relevant than ever before. Wildfires, tornadoes, and dangerous viruses are the top news of 2019 and 2020, and it won't change anytime soon. In a series of photographic panoramas shot in East Africa, celebrated photographer Nick Brandt records the impact of men in places where animals used to roam, but no longer do. Pollution and urban encroachment is the cause of ever decreasing habitat for the natural world and loss of biodiversity. It is time to talk about it, and, more importantly, it is time to do something about it now. Sarah Greene with Blue Lotus Gallery in Hong Kong, despite the coronavirus and the protests, chose to proceed with an exhibition INHERIT THE DUST by NICK BRANDT to reveal the tremendous danger hanging above Hong Kong. Vegas Film Critic (Jeffrey K. Howard) speaks with actor, Killian Scott, for his new STARZ series, Dublin Murders.
Series PremieresHis Dark Materials (HBO)During her search for a kidnapped friend, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and a mysterious phenomenon called Dust.Dublin Murders (Starz)Detectives Rob Reilly and Cassie Maddox find themselves dispatched to investigate the murder of a young girl on the outskirts of Dublin, Ireland. Based on the books "In the Woods" and "The Likeness" by American-Irish writer Tana French, this psychological thriller features a cast of mostly Irish actors, including Killian Scott and Sarah Greene as the leads. The series follows the detectives, who put their friendship to the test, as they are pulled deeper into the intrigue and darkness that surrounds the case. Season PremiereShameless (Showtime)Oscar-nominated actor William H. Macy stars as Frank Gallagher, a single father of six who spends much of his free time drinking at bars. The Gallagher children -- led by oldest daughter Fiona (Emmy Rossum), who takes on much of the child-rearing responsibility due to her mother's absence -- manage to raise themselves in spite of Frank's lack of parenting and unusual parenting style when he does choose to act like a father. The drama is an adaptation of the BAFTA Award-winning British show of the same name. TV Sneak PeekThe Crown (Netflix)Based on an award-winning play ("The Audience") by showrunner Peter Morgan, this lavish, Netflix-original drama chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) from the 1940s to modern times. The series begins with an inside look at the early reign of the queen, who ascended the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI. As the decades pass, personal intrigues, romances, and political rivalries are revealed that played a big role in events that shaped the later years of the 20th century. Picture: Ophelia by John Everett Millais, 1865-66. Private Collection The Scottish National Party brings the autumn political conference season to a close this week. The leader of the SNP has made her party’s position clear – she wants the Conservative government out, a Brexit extension secured and a General Election as soon as possible. Last week the First Minister told the Scottish Parliament: "We need to get powers out of the hands of Boris Johnson and his ilk and into the hands of this Parliament so that we don't have to put up with Tory welfare cuts anymore because we can take the right decisions here in the first place to lift people out of poverty." Jane is joined by Shirley Anne Somerville, MSP for Dunfermline and West Fife and Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Social Security and Older People to discuss the SNP’s offer to women voters on Brexit, Scottish Independence and other pressing policy issues ahead of a much anticipated General Election. The “Pre-Raphaelite Sisters” exhibition opens at the National Portrait Gallery this week to show just how engaged and central women were to the production of the art. Over the next few days Woman's Hour features some of these overlooked models, artists, makers, partners and poets. Dr. Jan Marsh curated the exhibition and wrote The Pre-Raphaelite Sisterhood in 1985 and Dr. Alison Smith curated Tate's major Burne-Jones exhibition last year. Today Elizabeth Siddal. Faecal Incontinence: "It’s like a dirty secret,” one listener told us. Why is faecal incontinence after childbirth so hard to talk about, even to your GP? While conversations around many of the effects of childbirth – from postnatal depression to pelvic floor problems – have become more common in recent years, bowel problems, less so. It’s thought that sphincter injuries can affect 1 in 10 mothers who’ve had vaginal births - with a higher risk to those having their first baby. So why don’t we talk about it more? Jane speaks to two Woman's Hour listeners living with faecal incontinence and to Dr Sara Webb, Research Midwife at the Institute of Applied Health Research, Birmingham University. Sarah Phelps, award-winning British screenwriter, joins Jane to talk about her latest TV crime thriller Dublin Murders which starts tonight on BBC1. It's drawn from Tana French’s internationally bestselling Dublin Murder Squad books and stars Killian Scott and Sarah Greene as the two ambitious detectives investigating two murders in Ireland around the turn of the millennium. In this episode I am joined by the incredible Sarah Greene who shares her life affirming wisdom and compassion about love, loss and survival. Sarah Greene is an award-winning presenter and actress who has hosted and starred in iconic British TV shows ranging from Blue Peter, Going Live and Holiday to Ghostwatch and Dr Who. Sarah positively excels in a live tv environment and has interviewed everyone from Margaret Thatcher to Cher over her illustrious career. Starting out as an actress, Sarah was hand-picked by Blue Peter’s legendary editor, Biddy Baxter, to become it’s youngest ever presenter. Whilst Sarah was working on the show, it picked up the BAFTA for best children’s programme. Moving on from Blue Peter, Sarah presented Saturday Superstore, followed by Going Live! which she co-presented with Phillip Schofield. Both shows dominated the ratings and that popularity was very much down to Sarah’s great chemistry on screen, both with her co-presenters and her natural ability to interview guests, whilst also working with the likes of Gordon the Gopher! Moving across into primetime proved effortless for Sarah and she has presented and co-produced hundreds of successful shows including Posh Frocks and New Trousers, Hospital Watch, Holiday and programmes across the Food Network Channel. Along the way Sarah also anchored the London Monring Breakfast Show on BBC London Radio – solo hosting a live three hour phone-in show with the listeners discussing the daily news. Sarah’s skills at mediating, chairing & presenting events have also seen her hosting many awards shows and corporate evenings throughout her career, working for companies such asNestlé, Mars, Standard Life and the Government's Green Initiative to name but a few. I know I will never be the same again after having had this chat with Sarah. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Getting to talk to the man that has heavily influenced my own writing was a real honour. Ghostwatch was a 1992 BBC Halloween TV show that, as a child, shook me to the very core. It opened my mind to just what was possible with horror and this interview revealed so many nuggets of Ghostwatch GOLD, I wasnt sure if I could truly call myself a fan anymore as I had no idea how many layers this onion really had. We speak about alternative casting (Sarah Greene was not first choice!) We speak about potential sequels to GHOSTWATCH and we discuss the show's influence on horror as a whole. In my mind, Stephen is a complete genius but I will never forgive him for making me afraid to go into the corner of my bedroom for the last two decades. Hope you enjoy and you can find out more about Stephen at his website http://www.stephenvolk.net/ and on twitter https://twitter.com/Stevevolkwriter. You can find me on twitter https://twitter.com/Jedshepherd Next week I speak to an amazing actress and director about her new Netflix film, so see you then!

This month we endure six hours in make-up to bring you three Doctor Who adventures notable for their use of prosthetic masks (to varying effect). First up, it's off to the planet Dido [N.B. CHECK SPELLING], where the First Doctor makes a new friend, and Ian and Barbara are ready for cockylickin'. Then we drop by Oodsphere, where the Tenth Doctor and Donna encounter Spartacus with tentacles and a huge, ever-growing pulsating brain. And finally, a long-awaited return to Telos, where the Cybermen are getting nostalgic and Sarah Greene is encased in sticky-back plastic. Along the way, we ponder the UK space programme, what it's like to be at a dreary sales conference, and exactly what's wrong with Eric Saward's writing.
