Episode No. 629 features artist Alexandro Segade of My Barbarian, and a re-air of a 2013 conversation with artist Eleanor Antin. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is presenting "Eleanor Antin and My Barbarian," a fiftieth anniversary celebration of Antin's landmark 100 Boots (1973). The exhibition also includes work featuring Antin's alter ego, the King of Solana Beach, and My Barbarian's Universal Declaration of Infantile Anxiety Situations Reflected in the Creative Impulse (2013), a feminist performance work that centers matrilineal creative inheritance. The work's title references the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was co-authored by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1948, and Melanie Klein's 1929 essay "Infantile Anxiety Situations Reflected in a Work of Art and the Creative Impulse." Performers include Segade and his My Barbarian mates Malik Gaines and Jade Gordon, as well as artists Mary Kelly and Antin. "Eleanor Antin and My Barbarian is on view through February 18, 2024. My Barbarian's work has been presented at museums such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and in a 2021-22 survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. This Bomb magazine interview between My Barbarian and Andrea Fraser was referenced on the program.  For Antin images, see Episode No. 104.

In questa puntata si parla di Marc Augé, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Maurizio Cattelan, Alighiero Boetti, Christian Boltanski, Gilbert & George, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Lawrence Wiener, Rikrit Tiravanija, Otto Muhl, Michelangelo Pistoletto, On Kawara, Fischli und Weiss, Banksy, Caravaggio, Claude Monet, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Tadao Ando, James Turrell, Charles Ray, Beatriz Colomina, Zadie Smith, Toni Morrison, Andrea Fraser, Sophie Calle, Carsten Höller, David Hockney, Massimo Gramellini, Walid Raad, Hans Haake, Naeem Mohaiemen, Kerry Hill, Geoffrey Bawa e Hauser & Wirth.

Hello everyone! Today I want to explore how it is to create an abstract painting using a slice of fresh meat, literally, and how to be the fresh meat in the art industry metaphorically. I had a pleasure to chat about both with my guest - Michael Ho. Micheal graduated in fine arts from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2018. Within only a year he booked solo shows at Tobi Art Fair Tokyo, Art Central Hong Kong, and Tokyo International Art Fair with great success. He is currently represented by Gallery Shimamura and Tokyo International Gallery. I chat with Micheal how his roots and education influenced his work as a conceptual artist and about his transition from being a student and producing very academic art to a sustainable business. We also explored how to work in a studio, how to present yourself, and perhaps shift slightly to the commercial side of art to achieve a perfect balance between business and academic. Last but not least, Micheal's latest project has shown brilliant conceptual work and unique materials, such as raw steaks! How you can use meat prints in conceptual art? Stay with me! And without further delay, please enjoy episode 11! Change has arrived and it's time that the art world increases its influence, inspiration, and power. We’re entering a very interesting time in the arts, when increasing numbers of artists will use their talents to push back against a growing climate of racism, inequality, and social conservatism. As Ted Wells says: "Jump off the BLANDwagon."  Dark times can make life beautiful. With the arts, our lives can be transitional during a time full of powerful artistic commentary and vivid artistic and social expression.  Some artists protest the present while shaping and reinventing the future; others artists help us escape our current reality or remind us that beauty and novelty still exist in the world, regardless of how bad we’re currently feeling about it. During the 1960s, artists created work that protested injustice and inspired the counterculture to battle the conservative backlash. And others made art that was so beautiful that it soothed shattered nerves and lifted average people out of the shadows. That was what the world needed then, and it’s what the world needs now. And I feel that’s exactly what is coming in the next few years. The creation of art, by any of us, can be a way of expressing our feelings within a realm of freedom that we might not be experiencing in our job, or among our community, or within our family. In some ways, it can a be way of emerging some part of our soul that would otherwise be trapped because of the way artistic expression can be squelched by society. Be raw, rougher … more honest and expressive … and way more real. This week: We talk with artist and visionary Nils Norman. Nils Norman was born in Kent, England in 1966. He studied fine Art Painting BA Hons at St. Martins School of Art in London. After graduating in 1989 he moved to Cologne, Germany. There he lived for three years and collaborated with the artists Stephan Dillemuth and Josef Strau at their experimental storefront project Friesenwall 120, during this time Norman also set up a small gallery space in London, which later became Milch. In Cologne Norman worked for one year assisting the German painter Gerhard Richter in his atelier. His first US exhibition was at the Pat Hearn Gallery in Chelsea (with Denis Balk and Simon Leung), after which he began to be represented by the late Colin Deland at American Fine Arts. Norman founded an experimental space called Poster Studio on Charing Cross Road, London. This space was a collaborative effort with Merlin Carpenter and Dan Mitchell. In 1998 in New York he set up Parasite, together with the artist Andrea Fraser, a collaborative artist led initiative that developed an archive for site-specific projects. Norman now lives and works in London. He exhibits internationally in commercial galleries, museum, and in public and alternative spaces. He writes articles, designs book covers and posters, collaborates with other artists, teaches and lectures in European and the US. Norman completed a major design project: an 80m pedestrian bridge and two islands for Roskilde Commune in Denmark in 2005 and is now working together with Nicholas Hare Architects on a school playground project for the new Golden Lane Campus, East London. He has recently finished an artist residency at the University of Chicago, Chicago, USA.
