In which Joel and Basie discuss Francesco Petrarca's sonnet "Now that the sky and earth and wind are still" among other things. Special thanks to Thomas Reed and Paul Rodes. Notes special to this episode: At about the 16th minute, our audio got weird, so we lost (and therefore you lose) some of the discussion about the interpretation of lines 12 - 14 through viewing the woman of the poem as as sort of God figure, and interpreting those same lines with the Catholic (because yes, Petrach was a Catholic) God as the God figure. The word Basie can't remember is Quatorzain, defined as any 14 line poem or stanza. A sonnet is always a quatorzain, a quatorzain need not always be a sonnet. Additional links: About hendecasyllable: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hendecasyllable The alternate translation (it's 164): https://theinkbrain.wordpress.com/2012/04/26/petrarch-21-164-and-177/ This poem is in the public domain.

If you'd like to read it, you can find it here: http://www.shakespeares-sonnets.com/sonnet/14 On another note, the title and author of the book that Basie forgets is How to Read a Poem by Edward Hirsch. Thank you for listening. We hope you enjoy. This poem is in the public domain.
