In 2021, the NAACP Image Award-winning poet Honorée Fanonne Jeffers made her fiction debut with The Love Songs of W.E.B. DuBois, a magisterial epic of African American historical fiction—an intimate yet sweeping novel with all the luminescence and force of Homegoing; Sing, Unburied, Sing; and The Water Dancer—chronicling the journey of one American family, from the centuries of the colonial slave trade through the Civil War, to our own tumultuous era. Five years, and numerous awards and best-of lists later, Honorée joins the podcast on the anniversary of the novel's publication to talk about what it meant then, what it means now, and that call from Oprah that shifted everything. Honorée Fanonne Jeffers is an essayist, novelist, poet, and a student of United States history. From a young age, Adrian loved to cook. And when he learned about homelessness from an elementary school workshop, he had an idea: what if he could sell his meals and support housing advocacy? Alas, Loco Dos was born. From Adrian: Loco Dos is my family-friendly pop up restaurant where I can share my favorite foods with my community while also supporting non profits like HPC by donating proceeds to their organization. My love of food started in Pre-K when I went to Farm Camp at Newton Community Farm and I became fascinated with all the fresh ingredients grown here in Massachusetts from fennel, basil, mint and more!  When I was five I got my first cookbook and I started making granola and soon that inspired me to want to learn to cook everything from soups, pizzas, meatballs, and more. In 2nd grade, I learned about homelessness at Stony Brook Elementary and I wanted to do something to help. My parents helped me combine my love of cooking and my wish to help my community  –  and I thought this was the best idea. And then Loco Dos was born. The first season of Loco Dos was AMAZING!  Love stories set in the American West are often extra romantic and heart-wrenching because of all the moving around the lovers are forced into. Jenny and Brian Drollinger's story takes them to every nook of the American West. But they actually met in high school in Alaska. It's a real life 80's rom-com, with all the miscommunications, near misses and twists of fate.
