When Joel was 22 he moved from Australia to Hawaii and met his soon-to-be wife, and then they eventually settled in LA.  Joel worked incredibly hard in sales for many years and was quite successful, and then in 2018 he decided to take a sabbatical and has since discovered a lot about himself and what makes him happy. Joel further proves our theory that talking about money can improve your life and the life of those around you.  We discuss a number of topics with Joel:Joel explains how 5am Joel was hatched at a party one night talking with a friend.  It started as a 30-day experiment, and turned into a new way of life.He explains the many benefits that getting up early has brought into his life, including increased productivity.  He believes the pros outweigh the cons.  The main benefits include: Productivity - he just got more stuff done.  Instead of playing catch-up at the end of the day, he was doing preparation and planning in the AM and he helped me.  He started crushing it at work.He spent more time learning and learned how to do a ton of new things. He thought proactively about things he could do to help his wife. His health improved as he had more time to work out.  Even just 20 minutes in the morning would make him feel good all day long.  As Maggie and Joel debate the merits of getting up early and Maggie considers changing her own habits, Joel equates getting up early to paying yourself first.  Everyone is given 24 hours in the day, and they often don’t pay themselves first and do the most important things first.  Getting up early is a good way to pay yourself first. In the years since Joel started getting up at 5am, he had an epiphany of why he gets up in the morning.  He used to get up just for work.  Now he gets up for himself, for his wife, and for many personal reasons that are for him and not for anything else.  His parents taught him a lot of great lessons about money.  His mom taught him how to budget, save, and work hard.  His parents taught him how to be an independent self-sufficient human being so all credit to them. The Bigger Pockets Money podcast is the first time he heard the term FIRE.  And as they sat down and reviewed their finances they realized they were already half-way there just based on how they had been living. Joel’s biggest financial pillars and focus include: (1) Believing you can and knowing it’s within your power to change things. (2) Track your spending. If you don’t track where your money is going, you don’t know what your future looks like.  To build a good future you need to know where your money goes.  (3) Earn more income when you can to keep growing your net worth.  Joel now focuses more on the lifestyle along the way.  He used to just focus on the numbers, and then realized it’s not all about the numbers.  He started to think, why can’t I have some of those benefits now.  His focus right now is more around the lifestyle vs the numbers.  Joel is also figuring out how to be happy along the way.  His biggest focus right now is happiness no matter how much money he has.  He wants to live his happiest and best life.  He once thought “when I hit financial independence, I can do all these things” and then he realized he can do all of those things right now. He realized that the benefits of financial independence can be enjoyed along the way.  He is ok extending his financial independence date because he’s finding more happiness in a slower journey.  He encourages people to focus on what makes you happy now and what fills your life with joy, and focus on building that now vs later.  Everyone’s path is different.  Doing what everyone else is doing led him off path a couple times in life.  Figuring out for himself is a better way to go. Getting married and talking about money a lot more catapulted their financial journey too.  They realized they could be different and not live like everyone else.  His wife is his accountability partner.  He started this habit of writing each morning when he got up at 5am, something positive and motivating.  His email started to spread and people asked to receive it.  He writes a little bit about personal finance in that blog, and he once got a reply from “J Money” who subscribed to his list.  They reached out to him to ask if he wants to write for the blog budgets are sexy, and that is how that opportunity came about.  Joel quit his job in 2018 to take a sabbatical.  He admitted it’s tempting to go back for the money.  He admits the biggest thing he was scared of in life was having no money.  To confront his fears he quit his job.  He just needed to step away and remove work and income from the equation.  Joel says the epiphanies and life lessons he’s learned since taking time off his previously demanding job has been life-changing.  Joel talks about how it’s hard work to build wealth.  Life is hard work.  Life itself is work.  He used to think work was the enemy in life, and how he realizes it’s a tool.  Mindset shift that work is on your side.  The second you think you’re going to stop working, you’re taking a lazy way out.  No matter what it will always involve hard work.  Money doesn’t come easy, it’s a lot of hard work. The more effort you put into life, the more you’re going to get from life.  People can sometimes have unrealistic expectations about work and retiring early.  Your financial journey has nothing to do with others, it has to do with what you were dealt with and you have to work from that. Our top 3 takeaways for this episode:The importance of your mindset and believing that a better financial path is possible.  And tracking your spending to get there!Enjoy the journey.  Focus on your lifestyle and happiness along the way.  Don’t just focus on the numbers.  Life is hard work, no matter what path you choose.  And money doesn’t come easy, it’s the product of hard work. ---Show References5am Joel Budgets are SexyThe Bigger Pockets Money podcast The MinimalistsThe Fioneers Rich + RegularBook - The Bag Lady Papers - The priceless experience of losing it all---Follow friends on FIRETwitterInstagramFacebookLinkedInLeave us a voicemail or text us: 404-981-3370eMail us at:  friendsonfiremm@gmail.comVisit our website: www.friendsonfire.org---Other LinksMaggie’s Blog: Mostly Minimal LifeMike’s Book: Your New Relationship with Money

Seal It With A Smile™ | Teaching | Self Awareness | Education | Emotions | Brain Building | Classroom | Psychology | Emoti

What does gratitude mean in education? It starts with something that happened to my during my second year of teaching. If you survived the cut throat, desperation and hopelessness that is the first year of teaching (which is all about survival); then the second year is MAGIC! You are more engaged with who you are, what you are capable of doing, what the hell you are supposed to be doing, and how to best serve your students. Relationships, for me, were something that I wanted to work on. I was comfortable in my classroom, I was comfortable walking the halls of my building and with others in my department. And it's not to say that I had a major issue building relationships with my students, but rather, I knew there was a deeper more meaningful way to build my relationships with my students. Depending on who you talk to, this is not common talk in the teachers lounge. Many teachers are out the door at 3:15pm along WITH the students. Many teachers can't stand kids, and I'm embarrassed to admit that on several occasions, when teachers would talk badly about students, I didn't speak up when I should have. You would be surprised by how many teachers don't like kids, much less helping them, and even less wanting to build meaningful relationships with them. For many, the time we spend in the classroom is more than they bargained for. I wasn't quite sure how to do it, but I knew there was something else I could be doing. Something that involved more than superficial talk. I felt stuck. And then there was Joel. My afternoons usually consisted of sweaty stinky football players and failing students coming after school to make up grades.  My afternoon tutorials were afternoons that smelled of desperation. Having one on one time with any student is fun, especially when I get to dive into molecular shapes, calculating grams per mol, or any other fun chemistry/science themes.  When Joel would come after school (because he needed to make up work, due to his family problems), it was different. Joel and I would sit and talk about the cars his uncle and him were rebuilding and fixing up. After all the stinky kids went off, we would talk about his alcoholic father's issues. About how grateful he felt for his uncle stepping in and playing a fatherly role, and for teaching him about auto body repairs; which he loved. It was great to see his eyes open wide and glisten whenever he talked about popping out doors, or mastering bondo. It was fun for me to just listen to him and to hear him get excited and passionate about doing something he saw himself doing for the rest of his life. His future was very clear to him. One afternoon, Joel waited until the room cleared out to tell me some interesting news; he made $16,000 selling three cars he fixed. And he wanted my opinion as to what he should do with the money. I was floored. Not only because of the fact that he saw me as someone who could counsel him in this regard, but because I understood that my relationship with him and my role was not defined by the title on my contract. I suggested that he open up a Roth IRA. A week later, he thanked me, and told me how the bank manger wanted to shake his hand for making such a wise investment at such a young age. Joel now has two shops and is doing fantastic.   The Friday before my very first day of school teaching, my principal spoke to the entire staff during a very hectic last Friday before the first day. With all of the teachers filling in the cramped cafeteria, legs nervously twitching, and after a monotonous and boring explanation of testing results from the year before, which being a new teacher, made no sense to me, my principal said some words that have haunted me ever since. He thanked all of us for what we do, for what we will do during the school year. And he thanked us for breaking poverty cycles. Whenever you find yourself this year, caught in a difficult situation with a student,

Marc and Joel discuss several topics, including Joel’s intentionally varied first half of his life, some of the triggers that started his pursuit of goals for the second half of his life, and how giving back through mentoring, from his extensive experience, is so gratifying.   Key Takeaways: [:54] Marc welcomes you to episode 75 of the Repurpose Your Career podcast. 75 episodes make a year-and-a-half. Marc invites you to share this episode with like-minded souls. Please subscribe wherever you listen to this podcast, share it on social media, and tell your neighbors and colleagues. [1:39] Next week, Marc will team up with Mark Anthony Dyson of The Voice of Jobseekers podcast for a Q&A episode to answer some listener questions. [1:52] This week’s episode is from the archives. It is an encore interview of Dr. Joel Dobbs. Dr. Dobbs was Marc’s first interview with a person who had made a career pivot in the second half of life. It was one of the best stories because Dr. Dobbs planned out his transition. Marc hopes you enjoy this episode! [2:15] Marc welcomes Dr. Joel Dobbs. [2:40] Joel majored in Chemistry, went to pharmacy school, and got a doctorate. He followed a purposefully varied career path, in three phases, until he retired five years ago. He was with GlaxoSmithKline when it was just Glaxo. In his time there it went from a startup to $3.5 billion a year. He helped the various business units develop.[6:34] Another company recruited him and he spent the last 15 years of his career as a CIO —  a completely unplanned path — until he retired five years ago. That was the first half of his career. Marc calls this a portfolio career or “a lot of different stuff.” [7:44] Today Joel is a business school professor at UAB Collat School of Business. He also runs a leadership consulting business, teaching from the multitude of mistakes he has made over the first half of his life. He finds it tremendously gratifying. [9:16] In his late 40s, Joel started considering his life’s impact. Around 50, he read Halftime: Moving from Success to Significance, by Bob Buford, and it set his path. [11:11] The halftime of your life is a period to ask: how do I turn the second half of my life into one that leverages my success, but focuses on significance? [11:42] Joel began really thinking about what did he want to do next? Was his ladder of success leaning against the wrong building? [13:52] Joel was very interested in his company’s offer of a voluntary retirement when they extended it to executives. He talks about consulting work he did, and other companies that recruited him. He wrote the job description for one of them. He also attended The Halftime Institute, which changed his view of life. [16:00] Joel put together in a notebook his plan for the second half of his life. He looked for opportunities to test concepts about working. [21:16] Marc comments on how Joel drove his career agenda. He knew when to move on and he left, always with the goal in mind. [22:03] If you know what you want to do, and you're able to answer that clearly, concisely, and decisively, you'd be surprised how often you get to do that. [22:19] Spend time thinking about the perfect life and writing it down. That very act sensitizes you to opportunity. [22:54] When Joel checked his ‘perfect life’ list after years, how much had he achieved? [24:45] Intentional achievement takes clarity. Usually, clarity does not come overnight. [26:50] Marc’s final thoughts: Dr. Dobbs was very purposeful in planning out his second half of life. [28:11] Marc invites you to check back next week when Mark Anthony Dyson and Marc answer listener questions.   Mentioned in This Episode: Careerpivot.com Mark Anthony Dyson The Voice of Jobseekers GlaxoSmithKline Stevens Institute of Technology UAB Collat School of Business. October 27, 2007. Grand Forks, North Dakota. 38-year old Joel Lovelien and his fiancée attend a Halloween party at a local bar. When Joel takes a moment to step outside, he is beaten to death in the parking lot. The investigation leads to a suspect named Travis Stay, who was so intoxicated that night that he cannot even remember what happened. Travis goes on trial for Joel’s murder, but his defence team manages to generate reasonable doubt by diverting attention towards a group of costumed suspects from a party bus. Did Travis Stay commit this crime or have others managed to get away with it? We look at both sides of this case in another Halloween-themed episode of “The Trail Went Cold”. Joel Sharpton fell backward into the radio business and found the perfect platform for his unstoppable motor-mouth. Joel is the host of What Makes Me Weird? and Co-host of Always Listening: Podcast Reviews from Josh and Joel. A voiceover artist, audio editor, audiobook narrator, happy father of four and lucky husband to one, you can find his blog, his podcasts and more at JoelSharpton.com. TWEET: Ep. 55: Joel Sharpton - Networking Helped Open Up Doors For Me Joel Sharpton kept working at it in order to become good at it. By trying a lot of things Joel Sharpton discovered that he wasn’t necessarily good at anything in particular but that he could get better at things by trying them. When Joel first stepped into the realm of radio Joel didn’t believe he had a great voice for radio but he got better and better the more he did it. On this episode of Chasing Dreams, you’re going to hear Joel describe how that process worked in his life and how you can build your skills and find your genius as you go along. How podcasting became a thing for Joel. Joel Sharpton is one of those guys that most of us think we have to be in order to get into podcasting. He had a background in radio so it seemed like a natural fit - and it was. But Joel is the first to tell you that a love for podcasts (not audio or radio) is what got him to create his own podcast. The more he listened the more he realized that he had something to say and that podcasting was the medium he could use to do it. Joel has lots of great advice for those who are considering podcasting so be sure you listen if you’ve even been thinking about trying out podcasting. TWEET: How podcasting became a thing for Joel Sharpton, on this episode “You’re not worried about bothering him, you’re worried about bothering you.” When Joel attended Podcast Movement 2015 he saw someone he had met on social media a few times across the room. His wife encouraged him to introduce himself and say a simple, “Hello.” But Joel’s excuse for not doing it was, “I don’t want to bother him.” That’s when his wife blew up his life and perspective by saying, “You’re not worried about bothering him, you’re worried about bothering you.” It was a push toward discomfort that was really uncomfortable for Joel but opened the door to possibilities that he was keeping himself from. On this episode you’re going to hear the story and how that simple phrase, said by someone who cared about him, changed the way Joel sees networking and connections, forever. Open the doors and allow yourself to meet the opportunities. Too many times the doors of opportunity are closed to us because we don’t even try to open them. That’s what Joel Sharpton was doing to himself by not introducing himself to people he’d already connected with via social media. He learned that taking a step into the unknown (and what could seem risky) is the only way to find out if an opportunity is lurking on the other side of the door. From a few simple and temporarily scary introductions Joel has been able to build an incredible network of people in the podcasting space and many of those connections have turned into lifelong friendships to boot. You can hear how Joel made the most of his own discomfort, on this episode of Chasing Dreams. TWEET: Open the doors and allow yourself to meet the opportunities. OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [0:50] Aimee’s introduction to her guest, Joel Sharpton [1:46] How Joel got into radio in the first place. [4:33] How Joel kept working at it to become good at it.
