Frankie D talks about Halloween and how most people seem to be forgetting about it and moving right on to Christmas. I also talk about how people are debunking the hoax of drugs being in Halloween candy. I also talk about how Elon Musk finally closes the deal on Twitter to buy it. I then talk about how the long time radio host Scott Shannon (formerly on Z100 and WPLG as part of Scott & Toff) is now retiring from WCBS- FM.
Frank Murphy is joined by opera singer David Crawford, who is also teaching and coaching opera students at the University of Tennessee. Frank tells David about Taylor Swift's cover of “September.” She sings “Do you remember the 28th night of September.” Earth, Wind & Fire sing about the 21st of September, which is nine months before Frank's birthday. Frank enjoyed watching David in the Metropolitan Opera production of Rigoletto, set in Rat-Pack era Las Vegas. David wore a custom-made jacket. HBO's Behind the Candelabra also wanted the fabric. David played Angelotti in Marble City Opera's production of Tosca. Marble City Opera's upcoming shows are Heartbreak Express, The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace, and Susannah. David has a full-time job as a lecturer and coach in vocal performance at UT. He hints about an appearance in an opera this season. Frank has a theory that WCBS-FM in New York plays extra Billy Joel songs because he is local to the area. He also thinks that other classic hits stations around the country base their playlists on the Joel-heavy playlist of WCBS. Frank and his wife Jere went to a late dinner at a restaurant with a popular bar. They thought they heard a terrible karaoke singer but it turned out to be an entertainer playing his keyboard and singing Billy Joel and Elton John songs. David likes to sing “Baby Got Back” when doing karaoke. David likes watching Emmanuel the Emu on YouTube. The videos originally appeared on TikTok. Frank thinks he gets more than enough emu on YouTube because of Liberty Mutual's commercials. Frank associates LMU with Lincoln Memorial University. Their team name is the Railsplitters and their mascot is Abe, as in Lincoln. The team name at David's high school was the Fighting Quakers, which was changed to the Hustling Quakers. His college's team was the Battling Bishops. He then went to a university with a team named the Terriers. Frank's theory is that team mascots should be predators like the Hawks but not the Doves. David suggests a team named the Vultures. David saw a dove with a smaller bird in its talons. Frank was the emcee for the Sweet Goodness Donut Challenge at the Tennessee Valley Fair. There seemed to be an unusually large number of volunteers eager to help with the doughnuts. He thought he was being recognized by a viewer or listener but it turned out to be his backyard neighbor. Several teenagers have started cutting through Frank's yard from the neighboring subdivision. A homeowner from the other subdivision came up the hill to ask if they were Frank's kids because they also cut through his yard. This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. WCBS-FM (101.1 FM) is a radio station offering a classic hits format licensed to New York City and is owned and operated by Audacy, Inc. The station's studios are in the combined Audacy facility in the Hudson Square neighborhood in lower Manhattan, and its transmitter is located at the Empire State Building. WCBS-FM was one of the first notable oldies stations in the country, with the format dating back to July 7, 1972. Between June 3, 2005, and July 12, 2007, the station aired the automated adult hits format "Jack FM". The new programming was unsuccessful, and WCBS-FM switched back to a personality-driven classic hits format. The station is continually ranked one of the highest-rated stations in the New York market, as well as one of the highest-rated classic hits stations in the United States.[1] PICTURE: By This copyrighted image was taken from their Web site,www.wcbsfm.com, Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=20641739 WCBS-FM JINGLE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypX3ECp2coE&ab_channel=Marcel%27sPromos%26CommercialsChannel LISTEN AND SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzyAwZGTgAdonBKhTxUiC2Q --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thequeensnewyorker/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thequeensnewyorker/support

Frank Murphy's friend Laura Beth Wells is filling in for Kathryn Frady, who is out of town working at Opéra Louisiane. Laura Beth and her husband David Crawford like to say “Roadhouse” if someone loses their train of thought. David is an opera singer. Frank appeared with David in the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's Clayton Holiday Concerts in December, 2018. David likes to tease Frank whenever he hears a Billy Joel song on the radio. Frank has a theory that radio stations around the country are influenced by the playlist of WCBS-FM in New York City, which might play extra Billy Joel songs because he is a New Yorker. Laura Beth likes Billy Joel music even though her husband does not. David and Laura Beth heard several Billy Joel songs on a Queen-themed online station. Frank asks if she's seen the unflattering meme comparing a picture of Billy Joel to a photo of Darth Vader without his helmet. Frank became an Elvis fan years after Elvis died. He produced a live radio broadcast from Graceland on the tenth anniversary of the death of Elvis. Frank and his wife Jere took their grandson Artie Rocket to D&B Hot Dogs to get a “Loaded Elvis Pocket” which was a banana in a hot dog bun with a layer of peanut butter and topped with marshmallow creme, chocolate syrup, and peanuts. Laura Beth and David like to order a crispy-crust pizza from Little Nicky's New York Pizza, two doors down from the hot dog restaurant. Frank met the owners of Little Nicky's several years ago at an ex-New Yorkers meet-up where pizza and Drake's Cakes were served. Laura Beth was in a commercial for Drake's Devil Dogs. Frank likes to buy a box of Devil Dogs when he is close enough to New York to find them. The commercial also featured a guy in a drake costume. A drake is a male duck. Frank tells Laura Beth about visiting Parrot Mountain for an upcoming See More Smokies Insider Edition episode. Frank and Artie and Kathryn Frady each got to hold three birds. A cockatoo named Tydee wanted to stay on Frank's shoulder and lick the sweat off his forehead. After recording two episodes in Pigeon Forge, Frank and Jere needed to take Artie someplace for dinner. They found long waits at The Old Mill Restaurant and at Downtown Flavortown. Laura Beth says the longest she will wait at a restaurant is half an hour. She was baffled by the long lines at the Shake Shack when she was performing on Broadway. Frank remembered that Junction 35 Spirits has a restaurant attached to its distillery. Frank, Jere, and Artie were seated immediately and enjoyed a delicious dinner. The waiter left a serving pitcher of water on their table, which was extremely helpful. Frank promised Artie they could roast Marshmallow Peeps after Jere cooked chicken on the smoker. Artie wanted to make s'mores but they didn't have any candy bars. Frank suggested he could try using chocolate syrup instead. The roasted Peeps have a caramelized sugar shell on the outside and softened marshmallow inside. Laura Beth and her daughter Lily did a taste-test of flavored Marshmallow Peeps, including cinnamon flavor, which they liked. Frank has tried Peeps-flavored things including a Peeps-flavored Slurpee, which tasted terrible. Frank mentions that former news anchor Kristin Farley enjoys Peeps and posts photos of her favorites. Frank saw an online ad for a broadcast of a newer production of Rigoletto set in 1920s Europe. The ad had an incorrect photo, showing a production of Rigoletto set in 1960s Las Vegas from season 40 of Great Performances. Laura Beth's husband David played Ceprano in the Vegas “rat pack” version. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Daniel Trombley Ingram (September 7, 1934 – June 24, 2018) was an American Top 40 radio disc jockey with a fifty-year career on radio stations such as WABC and WCBS-FM in New York City. July 3, 1961 - May 10, 1982 — WABC, New York City. He and Ron Lundy were on-air as the station switched to TalkRadio. Ingram was one of the most highly regarded DJs from his era. He was noted for his quick wit and ability to convey a humorous or satiric idea with fast pacing and an economy of words, a skill that rendered him uniquely suited to, and successful within, modern personality-driven music radio. He was among the most frequently emulated radio personalities, cited as an influence or inspiration by numerous current broadcasters. One of Ingram's unique skills was his ability to "talk up" to the lyrics of a record, meaning speaking over the musical introduction and finishing exactly at the point when the lyrics started. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Ingram#On_air_history

Robert's guest in this episode is "Cousin Brucie" Morrow, America's #1 and most famous radio air personality! "Cousin Brucie" has done it all in radio, starting out as the leading DJ of the 1960s on AM radio, then moving to FM radio for many years, then blazing a path on Sirius/XM for over a decade, and now back on AM radio.Robert's song in this episode: "I Wanna Be Your Girl" from East Side Sessions. On each of his albums Robert takes an iconic song from the British Invasion era of the 1960s and reimagines it. Here he took a song by The Beatles called "I Wanna Be Your Man", sung by Ringo in the movie A Hard Day's Night, and gave it a totally new feel including with a female singer."Cousin Brucie, Robert's guest today, had a personal connection to The Beatles. He was the leading radio personality in New York City in the ‘60s on WABC AM, or WABeatleC as it was then known. And he actually introduced The Beatles when they played at Shea Stadium in 1965. Robert's guest is Bruce Morrow - “Cousin Brucie” - America's #1 and most famous radio air personality. He ruled the airwaves in New York City on AM radio. About a year ago, he came full circle when he returned to WABC AM where he continues to host a weekly show. His voice can be heard in a number of movies. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame and the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He's the One And Only - “Cousin Brucie”.In this episode, Robert and “Cousin Brucie” discuss:What it was like to be on the radio at the time of The Beatles and the British Invasion bands. (4:41)Getting music exclusives from The Beatles ahead of the other stations. (17:05)His dream to become a doctor, and how that evolved to “healing” people on the radio. (19:51)How he got his famous theme music from The Four Seasons. (24:00)His evolution on radio from AM to FM to Sirius/XM and then back to AM. (25:19)The challenges “Cousin Brucie” has faced during his career. (32:26)His words of wisdom to all the Dreamers out there. Michael Harrison has served as the editor and publisher of TALKERS (), the leading trade publication in the American talk media industry for the past 30 years. In that capacity, he has become widely recognized as one of America’s leading authorities on radio, communications, and public opinion as it is expressed in the media as well as being director of the annual TALKERS Convention held in New York City for the past 23 years. Harrison graduated from Hofstra University in 1971. He is a charter inductee in the Hofstra Radio Hall of Fame and sits on the university’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication Dean’s Advisory Board. Still dynamic after a 52-year career as a broadcaster, he is a pioneer and innovator in both talk and rock radio as well as being a driving force in the industry’s trade publication field. He was the founding architect and first program director of the progressive rock format that launched the legendary WLIR, Long Island to national fame in 1970, while still a student. He went on to become the ground breaking morning host at historic album rocker WNEW-FM, New York shortly after graduation and served as a professor teaching Music & Contemporary Culture at New York University. Harrison has also been an air personality or on-air program director at such stations as KMET, Los Angeles; KPRI, San Diego; WZLX, Boston; WCBS-FM and WPIX, New York; WTIC, Hartford and others. He owned and operated one of the early talkers of the modern era — WSPR, Springfield, MA. He currently finds time in his busy schedule to guest-host talk shows at WRKO, Boston and WTIC, Hartford, which he describes as “a labor of love.” He has written about, defined, predicted or engaged in hands-on programming of major movements in radio’s evolution from coining new format terms to the development of music and talk-topic chart methodology. Among his inventions is the term “AOR” (Album Oriented Rock) which he coined in the early 1970s, while programming KPRI, to describe the more commercially-accessible brand of “progressive rock” radio that remained a dominant format for more than 40 years. Today, it is called “classic rock.” He has hosted and produced national radio programs syndicated by ABC Radio Networks, Westwood One, CBS Radio, MJI Broadcasting, RKO Radio and more. These include the legendary “Album Greats: The History of Album Rock,” “The Great American Radio Show,” “Mike Harrison’s Rock Connections” and “Backstage at the Grammys” among others. Harrison served as the first managing editor of Radio & Records during its formative years and radio columnist/record chart consultant for Billboard in the early 1980s. He was one of the first media analysts to predict the rise of podcasting before the term was widely known, not to mention serving as Program Director of the first radio station to have its own website. In addition to hosting “The Michael Harrison Wrap”, he also currently hosts PodcastOne’s “The Michael Harrison Interview” an award-winning weekly podcast geared to “media freaks, pop culture aficionados, political junkies and the philosophically curious” and, ever on the leading edge, operates an experimental “hyper-local” online talk station — Pioneer Valley Radio — in Western Massachusetts.

Herman's Hermits [17:45] a side: "Silhouettes" MGM Records K-13332 1965 Thanks to Armed Forces Radio, we have this doo-wop classic by The Rays as interpreted by Herman's Hermits. Jim Croce [19:45] a side: "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" ABC Records ABC-11359 1973 Reputedly written about a fellow Jim Croce met in his brief Army career. Kind of reminds me quite a bit of Stagger Lee, but who am I to say. Hit number one in May of 1973 and was still on the charts when Croce's plane crashed in September of that year. Jimmie Rodgers with Hugo Peretti & His Orchestra [24:24] a side: "Secretly" Roulette R-4070 1958 No, not the Singing Brakeman, the other Jimmie Rodgers. This turned out to be a gold record for Mr. Rodgers, reaching number 3 on the Hot 100 and number 5 on the Hot Country charts. The Shocking Blue [27:01] a side: "Venus" Colssus ABC YYYY Mareska Veres and her Dutch pals bringing this super hot hit from 1969. Made it to number 1 in 1969. The 4 Season featuring the "sound" of Frankie Valli [30:07] a side: "Let's Hang On!" Philips 40317 1965 Wow, that fuzz rock fakeout before the first chorus is pretty awesome. Made it to number 3 on the hot 100 in 1965. I am totally having WCBS-FM flashbacks right now. Elvis Presley [33:25] a side: "Burning Love" RCA Victor 74-0769 1972 A decent enough outing from early 70s Elvis. This reached number 36 on the country charts, and number 2 on the hot 100 in 1972. Scholastic Magazine [37:49] First Men on the Moon: Apollo 11 - July 20, 1969 Side One If you love you some good NASA audio, dig this (https://archive.org/details/Apollo11Audio). Family Circle [44:09] 6 Minutes to Figure Beauty: Words and Music to Grow Slim By "Side One" And one two three four, two two three four, etc. Music behind the DJ: "Barnaby Jones Theme" by Jerry Goldsmith
Troy McCallum had it all figured out. He listened to the episode with Gruff Gushnowski and knew that doing the podcast in the car would be a fitting place to talk radio. After all, he spends up to 3 hours a day in the car listening to the radio on the way to work as program director at Boom 97.3 in Toronto. Troy and I spent about half of his commute home talking about his early days in radio, his affinity for the Classic Hits format, programming said format, and discussing two trips he took last year. One to Philadelphia where he had his first breath of podcast air at Podcast Movement 18, and a trip to New York where he got to meet the legendary Broadway Bill Lee at WCBS-FM.There's so much to learn about Troy and the roots of his creativity which stem from performance, to acting and then directing, to the collaborations of some Boom 97.3 mainstays like 97.3 Seconds and Behind the Vinyl. He also writes a lot of imaging, and has a good relationship with station voice Joe Cipriano, a must for any successful radio station. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogic
This aircheck from WCBS-FM DJ Bob Shannon in the summer of 1989 uses an interview that I conducted with Del Shannon on May 13, 1989, the night he performed as part of an oldies package concert in Fairfax, Virginia. The rest of the interview may be found on my SoundCloud page. It was Del's last comprehensive interview. I later wrote up the interview for Goldmine magazine under my pen name Dawn Eden; it was published March 23, 1990. The interview began before Del's performance and continued afterwards. I was as young as I sound -- twenty. All rights to this interview are reserved to Dawn Eden Goldstein and to Del Shannon's estate. To contact Dawn, write dawneden -at- gmail.com (replace -at- with @). Thanks to Michael Mazzarella for digitizing the cassette interview.

One of several labels used for the 45 of this song. I think this was the retail version of the original release, based on what the promo label looks like. Chester ("Chet") Powers was a musician who was well-known in the café scenes on both coasts, and certainly had his influence on other musicians. He's also known for being a member of the band Quicksilver Messenger Service. But for all that, he only wrote one song that was any kind of a commercial success, and that was after a virtual parade of artists had already recorded it. This episode also features a 2-1/2 minute clip from a show called "The Life and Times of Dan Ingram", a special program that runs for about six hours (no kidding) about one of the greatest disc jockeys of the Rock and Roll Era. It originally aired on RewoundRadio.com a little over a year ago. Thanks so much to Allan Sniffen, the heart of that website and the guy who knows pretty much everything there is to know about WABC-AM's Musicradio days. And if you go over there, you'll immediately recognize that this show's title is absolutely an homage. (No, I didn't tell Allan that until after he'd agreed to provide me with the clip. Heh.) Coincidentally (because I'm terrible at planning ahead), I'm typing this post on Thursday evening, September 7. Today happens to be Dan Ingram's 83rd birthday. Happy Birthday, Big Dan! Dan Ingram at WCBS-FM. I got to meet him back in the summer of 1984 when he was doing the Top 40 Satellite Survey for CBS Radio, and he couldn't have been a nicer, more giving fellow, especially considering the way my 21-year-old self was sputtering my way through the interview. He had a fabulous way of putting me at my ease. Unfortunately, I no longer have the tape of that interview. (Divorce can be a suck-fest, kids.) Here's a link to one of Allan's other labors of love: Musicradio77.com is a collection of stories, photos, airchecks and other goodies for anyone who was a fan of WABC in its Musicradio heyday. Click on the music note at left to visit that site. As usual, if you haven't subscribed via iTunes or your favorite podcast catcher, you can download the file or just listen right here: And of course, I wouldn't complain too loudly if you went to iTunes and gave me a positive review. Even if that's not your podcast catcher, every little bit helps.
Broadway Bill Lee is one of the reasons I fell in love with radio. In the late 80's I would watch Vuolo Video airchecks and Bill stood out amongst the crowd. Fast forward to the digital era and Bill is still entertaining people on multiple social media platforms with his unique song intros that make him one of a kind. His afternoon show on the legendary WCBS-FM is top rated because of the hard work he puts into the show, and the great programming team at the station. Yes, it's a trip down memory lane at times, but if you want to work for 5 decades in radio, you had better be able to rebrand yourself. (We talk about that)The podcast is brought to you by Promosuite and their new cloud based paperless studio. We wanted to have Rocco from Promosuite on the show to talk about his time with Bill Lee at Hot 97, but alas... he had laryngitis. Visit the website - it will make him feel better. http://www.promosuite.com/soundoff
