Dr. Joseph Ryan is an Assistant Professor of Biology at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience at the University of Florida. Joe studies DNA from squishy marine invertebrates like ctenophores (e.g. comb jellies), cnidarians (e.g. jellyfish), tunicates (e.g. sea squirts), and sea cucumbers. His goal is to understand how different types of animals are related, how animals adapt to extreme environments, and how animals have evolved the extraordinary diversity we see today. When he's not at work, Joe loves spending time with his family. He and his two kids enjoy dancing to “Tiny Bubbles” by Don Ho and songs by the band The Clash. Joe is also a fan of singer-songwriter Slim Whitman, and he plays guitar, drums, and keyboard. Joe received his PhD in bioinformatics from Boston University. Afterwards, he was awarded a research fellowship at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral scholar at Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology in Bergern, Norway. In our interview Joe shares more about his life and science.

Don Ho, the famous Hawaiian singer, walked into Dave Kenney's bar and said, “I like the way you operate.” I don't know Don Ho, I don't know that much about Don Ho, but I do know that Don Ho seems to have excellent judgment. I, too, like the way Dave Kenney operates. Originally from England, Dave's work in the hotel industry eventually landed him in Hawaii, and understandably, he didn't want to leave. Since then, he's owned and operated just about everything: a convenience store, a t-shirt business, a fishing boat, and nine or ten different Honolulu bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. During the Covid-19 outbreak, Dave and his wife, Margie, bought a place in Henderson, Nevada, just outside Las Vegas. Now, they hop back and forth between the two. That journey is a common one: Las Vegas has been called “The Ninth Island” because of its sizeable Hawaiian population. Dave retired at 55, but Margie's real estate business is booming, and he lends his hoteling expertise whenever she needs it. Otherwise, he does Zumba four days a week, walks several miles daily, and enjoys his afternoon cocktail. Dave finds a perfect day no matter where he is, and as much as he travels, that could be just about anywhere. For a guy who claims he's never worked a day in his life, he sure has had a lot of jobs. Maybe that's the beauty of the Aloha spirit. When life handed Dave lemons, sometimes he made lemonade. Other times, he traded the lemons for limes and made a gin and tonic to enjoy by the pool. That sounds like a happy retirement to me. *********** Chapter titles: 00:00-Start 02:24-From First Jobs to Hawaii 09:58-Taste of Honolulu 12:14-Transatlantics 17:19-Staying Fit 21:50-Booze Cruisin' 24:19-Earn a Little, Keep a Lot 30:50-I'm Happy Where I'm At 38:16-Core Pursuits & Identity Learn more about your ad choices. It's Ben's pick this week on Saturday Night Jive and since he's not bound by the rules of picking movies that relate to SNL we watched the Don Ho classic Joe's Apartment from 1996.  A beautiful love story about a kid in the big city fighting against corporate greed and trying to make his way in a world that doesn't understand him.  Also there's animated roaches that annoy and ruin every scene with their sped up voices.  This movie stars Jerry O'Connell, Robert Vaughn, and the amazing thespians Don Ho and Pepa.  MTV's first foray into feature films is a big old mess.  It's also not that interesting to talk about so we spend the majority of the podcast talking about George driving his wife to an emergency room through a tornado and playing a new game based on the website Common Sense Media.  Enjoy!Full archive of all podcast episodes available at saturdaynightjive.blogspot.comEmail us anything at saturdaynightjivepodcast@gmail.comDownload Here

Les, Kurt, and Jason, like the rest of the world, are mourning the passing of the legendary Betty White. Back in 2019, they watched a Hallmark movie starring Betty White and Jennifer Love Hewitt called The Lost Valentine which showed us that Betty is a fantastic dramatic actor, too. So please enjoy that episode again (or for the first time).    REPOST: Les, Kurt, and Jason join the search party for The Lost Valentine, a Hallmark Hall of Fame film starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Betty White. One thing that was found: Gil Gerard's career! (Who knew Gil Gerard shaming could be a thing?) Kurt describes the east coast weather as a June Squibb (a surprising number of our episodes are tagged with June Squbb's name). The guys read serious "swinger dinner party" subtext into one of the scenes, learn that Captain Stubing was an abusive father, agree that public proposals are bad bad bad, and confuse one of the characters with Neo from the Matrix (or was it R&B singer Ne-Yo)... all while name-checking Lance Bass' movie "On the Line," Hoku, Don Ho, and the demise of the CableAce Awards.    Facebook : lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast Instagram : lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast Theme song generously donated by purple-planet.com

What the Riff?!?
1973 - January: Elvis Presley "Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 2, 2021 38:28

By 1973 Elvis had definitely not left the building.  In fact, January 1973 would be the month that Elvis Presley would broadcast a concert live via satellite to 38 countries.  The concert would air in the United States on NBC in April 1973, and would be the basis for the album we are featuring - Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite, the four-month delay being a result of a conflict with Super Bowl VII (which Miami Dolphin fans will recall as the culmination of Miami's undefeated season).Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis's manager, got the idea of a live satellite broadcast from Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China.  There is also speculation that Parker took this step in lieu of an international tour to avoid revealing his status as an illegal immigrant in the United States (Parker was Dutch).  The concert was scheduled at the conclusion of the fifty-nine show engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton. The special was produced by Marty Pasetta, who had produced television specials for others like Perry Como, Glen Campbell, and multiple specials from Hawaii for Don Ho.  Pasetta was concerned after seeing what he considered a lackluster live Elvis show in Long Island.  Despite a dismissive stance from Colonel Parker, Pasetta took his ideas directly to Presley.  He wanted a lower stage with a runway, allowing better audience participation.  He wanted mirrors to frame the stage and neon lights to read "Elvis" in the language of all the countries to which the concert was broadcast.  Finally, and most controversially, he wanted Elvis to lose weight for the show.  Presley was impressed with his frankness, and took up his ideas, even embarking on an exercise routine at Graceland.  Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite would bookend the comeback era for Elvis which was started with his 1968 television special.  Elvis would encounter difficulties in his family life, health, and prescription drug use that would eventually result in his untimely death in 1977. Also Sprach Zarathustra/See See RiderThe Ricard Strauss tone poem made famous in "2001: A Space Odyssey" starts off the concert.  The intro leads into the blues standard "See See Rider" first performed by Gertrude "Ma" Rainey in the 1920's, and covered by many performers including Chuck Willis, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, and the Animals.Burning LoveDennis Linde wrote this song for Elvis in 1972, and it was a big hit, rising to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The track would be the last Elvis song to reach the 1op 10 in the U.S.My WayThis song is a cover originally performed by Frank Sinatra in 1969.  The lyrics are from Paul Anka.  Although it remains closely associated with Sinatra, it would also become a staple of Elvis performances in the 70's, and would hit number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 shortly after Presley's death.American TrilogyCountry composer Mick Newbury wrote this medley, and it would be popularized by Presley as the showstopper for many of his concerts.  The medley includes the 19th century southern song, “Dixie,” the marching hymn of the Union army, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and the African American spiritual “All My Trials.”  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Bonanza"The final episode of this long-running Western TV series aired in this month. STAFF PICKS:Papa Was a Rollin' Stone by the TemptationsBruce's staff pick is a funky and long song, with the album version of the song running 11 minutes and 46 seconds.  Originally released by The Undisputed Truth, the Temptations would take this song to number 1, and would win 3 Grammy awards.  “Papa was a rollin' stone.  Wherever he laid his hat was his home, and when he died, all he left us was alone.” You Turn Me On I'm a Radio  by Joni MitchellRob heads into the folk genre with singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell and this single from her fifth studio album.  David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Neil Young all participated in the recording session for this song, but only Nash's harmonica work made it to the final cut.  This was Mitchell's first top 40 hit in the United States. Dixie Chicken by Little FeatWayne's Southern Rock staff pick was actually recorded by a Los Angeles band.  Bonnie Raitt sings backing vocals on this song.  The story is about a guy who marries a girl in a drunken haze, only to be left shortly thereafter.Living In the Past by Jethro TullBrian's pick is a 5/4 metered song by rock flutist Ian Anderson.  This is the highest charting track from Jethro Tull.  It was a rejection of the happy tone that was fashionable in the post-Beatles music of the time.  Despite its success, Anderson did not like it.   FINISHING TRACK:I Can't Help Falling in Love With You by Elvis PresleyElvis closed out his concert with this song, and we're closing out this week's podcast the same way..

But it's so unnecessary when we are learning a new language. When I met Don Ho back in the day for radio interview, he taught me the beauty of laughing at your own mistakes and not taking yourself so seriously. I wrote about that experience in the story for my book " Hawaii kara no okurimono" and will share it on this episode. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sachipodcast/support

Herman's Hermits [00:30] "I Can Take or Leave Your Loving" MGM Records K 13885 Reached number 22 on the US charts. Bobby Darin [03:02] "Mack the Knife" ATCO Records 45-6147 1959 Bobby Darin's number one smash hit interpretation of the Berthold Brecht/Kurt Weill classic. The Fabulous Echoes [06:07] "Please Leave Her to Me" Liberty Records 55755 1964 Hong Kong garage rockers who would eventually become part of Don Ho's circle of musicians. Victor Lundberg [08:24] "Open Letter to My Teenage Son" Liberty Records 55996 1967 Phew... that may be the longest 4 minutes and 23 seconds of my life. Oh those rascally teenagers. This spent exactly 6 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100, peaking out at number 10. Vic Dana [14:05] "Lovey Kravezit" Dolton Records No. 317 1966 Definitely a new one by me. Evidently inspired by a character from the C-grade James Bond cash-in The Silencers featuring Dean Martin as Matt Helm. The character in question is portrayed by Beverly Adams, who also appeared in two other Matt Helm vehicles, as well as How to Stuff a Wild Bikini as the object of Eric Von Zipper's affections and the Bewitched episode "George the Warlock" as Dora "D. D." Danger O'Riley The Buckinghams [16:32] "Kind of a Drag" U.S.A. Records TM 1783 1966 A number one hit on the Hot 100 for this Chicago band. Wayne Fontana [18:37] "Pamela, Pamela" MGM Records K 13661 1966 So this is what Wayne gets up to without the Mindbenders. Who kissed whom in the woods? Dude, you're totally crossing pop culture references. Irma Thomas [20:48] "Some Things You Never Get Used To" Imperial Records 66095 1965 A mighty fine single from the Soul Queen of New Orleans. Somehow this Van McCoy single never gained any traction on the charts. However it did become a big hit on the Northern Soul scene. Ed Ames [25:01] "My Cup Runneth Over" RCA Victor 47-9002 1967 A number one hit on... the Adult Contemporary charts in 1967 from one of the Ames Brothers and frequent portrayer of Native Americans on television. Three Dog Night [27:45] "Joy to the World" Dunhill/ABC Records 45-4272 Three Dog Night bringin us their 1971 smash hit. Penned by Hoyt Axton, this easily made it to the number spot on the Hot 100. Jimmy Holiday [31:08] "Baby I Love You" Minit MIN 32002 1966 Some quality soul from who helped compose "Put a Little Love in Your Heart". This single reached number 98 on the Hot 100 and number 21 on the R&B charts. Brewer and Shipley [33:43] "One Toke Over the Line" Kama Sutra KA-516 1970 Yeah, somehow this one made it to number 10 on the Hot 100 despite Spiro Agnew's protestations. And produced by Occidental, California resident Nick Gravenites. The Osmonds [38:13] "One Bad Apple" MGM Records K 14193 1970 If this number one gold record sounds like The Jackson 5, well that's because it was written by papa George Jackson. Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels [41:02] "Devil with a Blue Dress On/Good Golly Miss Molly" New Voice Records 817 1967 This uptempo version of Shorty Long's "Devil..." reached number 4 on the hot 100, the most successful outing. King Harvest [44:19] "Dancing in the Moonlight" Percecption Records P 515 1972 Zut alors, a little number from a Paris-based band King Harvest. This made it up to number 13 on the Hot 100. The 5th Dimension [47:18] "Save the Country" Bell Records B 895 1970 The most succesful recording of this Laura Nyro tune, reaching as far as number 27 on the Hot 100. Great Moments in Weed History w/ Abdullah and Bean

Ever wonder what President Barack Obama was like as a pot-smoking teenager in Hawaii? We did, so we dug deep into Barry's time with his high school weed crew, the Choom Gang. “In Hawaii, chooming means indulging in pakalolo,” fellow Choom Gang member Tom Topolinski explains to Frontline. And yes, pakalolo is yet another slang term for cannabis, as heard in Hawaiian musician Don Ho’s classic song, “Who Is the Lolo Who Stole My Pakalolo?” You might remember seeing this young version of Obama portrayed by Jordan Peele in a classic Key and Peele sketch. The former president famously admitted that he used cannabis as a youth and that he surely inhaled as “that was the point.” Though he opposed cannabis legalization as a senator, his public stance evolved over the course of his tenure, and his direction to federal authorities to lay off state-level efforts to legalize cannabis makes him the most progressive president on the cannabis issue to date. Some say it’s just good policy, but we say it calls for a special shout-out to the Choom Gang. Check out our friends and sponsors, who helped make this episode possible: Camino Gummies

Dr. Joseph Ryan is an Assistant Professor of Biology at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience at the University of Florida. In the lab, Joe studies DNA from squishy marine invertebrates like ctenophores (e.g. comb jellies), cnidarians (e.g. jellyfish), tunicates (e.g. sea squirts), and sea cucumbers. His goal is to understand how different types of animals are related, how animals adapt to extreme environments, and how animals have evolved the extraordinary diversity we see today. When he’s not at work, Joe loves spending time with his family. He and his two kids (one and three years old) enjoy dancing to “Tiny Bubbles” by Don Ho and songs by the band The Clash. In our interview Joseph shares more about his life and science.

After being awarded a merit badge for hunger at an badly-planned "business meeting", Scott gets quite drangry and fantasizes about moving to a volcanic paradise where entrees are plentiful and the only hot air being spewed his way comes from a mountain. In “The Hula Lesson” we join Hawaiian Hula teacher Roselle Bailey and her multicultural halau to find out what hula is, what it means to Hawaii, and why so many non-Hawaiians love it. Hula is more than girls dancing with coconut bras and grass skirts, with strains of Don Ho in the background. In fact, hula is a complete expression of a traditional culture, which uses dancing and singing for teaching social lessons, and for recounting history.
