Falsely Imprisoned for 23 Years: Now He's Received $7 Million The payout “doesn't settle what I went through,” said Derrick Hamilton, who accused the police of fabricating evidence. Photograph by Dana Lixenberg for The New Yorker Derrick Hamilton was wrongfully convicted of murder, and spent more than two decades trying to prove his innocence. Derrick Hamilton's legal education began in 1983, when he was seventeen and in the jail for teen-age boys on Rikers Island. He'd been an enthusiastic student as a child—his family called him Suity, because he liked to wear a suit to school. But in high school he'd begun skipping classes and getting into trouble. At fifteen, he was charged with robbery and sentenced to sixty days in jail. The arrests continued, for petty larceny, assault, criminal use of a firearm. Then, in March of 1983, a bread deliveryman was fatally shot near Lafayette Gardens, the public-housing project in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, where Hamilton lived, and he was charged with the murder. He insisted that he had not done it, and entered a plea of not guilty. His father, a livery-cab driver, hired a lawyer named Candace Kurtz to represent him, and she urged him to start studying in the jail's law library, so that he could better understand his predicament. Hamilton is now fifty, tall and heavyset, with a shaved head and a thin scar running down the right side of his scalp. “I took it seriously,” he recalled recently, “because here's some stranger saying, ‘Hey, listen. Get out of wherever you're at. Wake up, kid, this is real.' ” He started spending time in the library, and eventually taught himself enough criminal law to become one of the most skilled jailhouse lawyers in the country. But, in the fall of 1983, two months after Hamilton turned eighteen, a jury found him guilty. He was given thirty-two years to life for the murder and for an earlier, unrelated gun charge, and was sent to Elmira Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison near the Pennsylvania border. There he earned a high-school-equivalency diploma and took a class on how to conduct legal research. In 1985, he was sent to Siberia, as inmates call Clinton Correctional Facility, which is twenty miles from the Canadian border. In the law library there, he met a group of veteran jailhouse lawyers, one of whom gave weekly tutorials on criminal procedure. There is no job description for a jailhouse lawyer. It's an occupation born of desperation: most prisoners cannot afford lawyers, and are eligible for a free attorney only for their first appeal. After that, they have to either learn the law themselves or find a jailhouse lawyer to help them. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jackierowe/message

Paul Clark, Holding a gun made 15-year-old Paul Clark feel like a bigger man, he remembers. He was a slightly-built kid—5'4” and 118 pounds. The weapon commanded the respect of others on the street. Clark insists never intended to use it. But then he did, and a 17-year-old named Keith Thomas was killed. Clark was 18 in August 1980 when he shot Thomas twice after a fight at a block party near his Brooklyn home, resulting in a 33 ⅓ year prison sentence. It took years for Clark to acknowledge his guilt and remorse, writing a letter of apology to the Thomas family. “It's a decision I regret for the rest of my life,” he said. But three years after he was sent to an upstate prison, Clark was brought to Brooklyn to stand trial for a different crime, the attempted robbery and murder of a taxi driver. He was stunned by the accusation by a police detective and a single witness. “The only thing I know from that crime is what I learned at trial,” says Clark, who still maintains his innocence today. The judge called him a “baby-faced killer” and added 25 years to Clark's prison sentence, for a total of 58 years. “I didn't have any hope,” Clark said, confronted with the possibility that he may die in prison. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jackierowe/message

Episode 91 Natalie Burke Her! Story

Natalie Burke MSW. DBH Candidate CEO W.E.L.L Athletic Development Twenty years ago I was convicted of a non violent marijuana related charge. I served my sentence of 120 days (4months), 3 yrs probation , community services, and paid my restitution. I paid my debt to society and fulfilled my obligation to the justice system. In the interim, I developed a deep spiritual relationship with the Most High, I did tons of self development including pursuing a higher education. I did a holistic 180 turn for the better. My career and personal life metamorphosed into a far better version of myself. It took a lot of hard work and discipline to not return to my old life when there was so much temptation. Then to my surprise in the middle of the night, my son and I had dinner and we're watching a movie, I.C.E. knocks on my door and callously locks me up in front of my son. I was detained in a federal facility for 18 months fighting to stay in the only country I had known. During this time I realized my calling to become a Social Worker. In the Federal detention center I provided resources and support to the women I was locked up with. After being released I attended Arizona State University and received my Bachelor's and Masters degrees in Social Work. In 2016, the State of Arizona granted me my rights back and set aside my criminal record, so I was able to purchase a fire arm, pass a background check etc. I was suppose to be freed from any disability that a felony conviction would pose. Apparently the issue that I thought was reconciled and left in my past was not according to the federal government. Unbeknownst to me my charges left me deportable. The only thing that can help me to regain my freedom is a gubernatorial pardon. Jan 26, 2018 the Arizona Board of Executive Clemency granted me a favorable recommendation for a gubernatorial pardon. I have waited 5 long hard years in hopes that the former governor Doug Ducey would grant me the pardon. On December 30,2022 he denied my pardon application. As a result At a moments notice I can be deported back to Jamaica. I came to this country legally as a permanent resident in April of 1979 at the age of 3. I have lived as an American for 43 years. Marijuana is now legal in the state of Arizona, it is disheartening that what I was criminalized for has now become a billion dollar industry. Most of the people capitalizing from cannabis don't look like me however, the people incarcerated for it do. I am compelled to share my story in hopes that someone in a position of power will help me attain a pardon so that my family can remain together. I am unable to work, have no access to health insurance, I had a stroke a few months back. It would be an injustice to let my son be punished by taking his mom away. I never committed murder and I deserve a second chance. Although I did the time I was sentenced to, day after day my mind continues to be imprisoned by the fear of being deported. My heart is wounded by the betrayal of a country that I love, yet I feel so unloved by. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jackierowe/message

FRONT ROWE with some of my exclusive friends and Mike Tyson Recapping some of his memorable moments. Yolanda Whittaker aka YO-YO is a Grammy-nominated American rapper and actress. Much of her music has advocated female empowerment, denouncing the frequent sexism found in hip-hop music. She is the protege of gangsta rapper Ice Cube. Yo-Yo dubbed her crew the IBWC, which stood for the Intelligent Black Woman’s Coalition. Yo-Yo first appeared as a guest on Ice Cube’s AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted album in 1990, on the track “It’s a Man’s World.” Cube returned the favor by appearing on “You Can’t Play with My Yo-Yo,” which was on Yo-Yo’s 1991 debut album, Make Way for the Motherlode. Her follow-up in 1992, Black Pearl was well-received by critics, partly because of its focus on positive messages and uplifting themes that contrasted the popular gangsta rap style. However, despite a plethora of renowned producers such as DJ Muggs, this did not translate into a hit with mainstream hip-hop audiences, and the album’s sales were considered a disappointment. Less than a year later, released her follow-up “You Better Ask Somebody”. The final track on the album was her third recorded hip-hop duet with Ice Cube, “The Bonnie and Clyde Theme”. Yo-Yo’s next album was 1996’s “Total Control”. In 1998, she finished her fifth album, Ebony, but it was not released. In 2008, her single “Can’t Play With My Yo-Yo” was ranked number 92 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs. Later that year, she performed with MC Lyte, the Lady of Rage, and Salt-n-Pepa at the BET Hip Hop Awards. As of 2009, she has been at work on an EP, titled My Journey to Fearless: The Black Butterfly. In 1991, YoYo appeared in John Singleton’s feature film debut, Boyz n the Hood. She also appeared in Who’s the Man?, Menace II Society, Strapped, and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. She had a recurring role on the television show Martin as Keylolo, the sidekick of comedian Martin Lawrence’s alter ego Sheneneh; and appeared on other TV shows, including the Fox network’s New York Undercover. She has also made many cameo appearances, including the music video for Missy Elliott’s “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)”. YoYo has also appeared in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, as a voice actor. A meeting YoYo had in 1994 enabled her to help enrich children’s lives today. It was more than a decade ago that the pioneering Los Angeles rapper spoke before Congress on behalf of rap. While in Washington, she met U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who represents California’s 35th Congressional District, which includes YoYo’s native South Central Los Angeles. With the help of Representative Waters’ Community Build program, YoYo launched “YoYo’s School Of Hip Hop,” a seven-week summer program designed to teach 100 low-income children hip-hop dance and how to write rap. A mother herself, YoYo knows the importance of keeping kids busy in a fun and productive manner, but also in a way that will entertain their minds. YoYo aims to inspire and reach out to kids that otherwise might not have such opportunities.

In 1998 instead of giving up, Woods' printed, bound, self-published and began selling hand to hand her first book True to the Game.On December 18, 1999 with the support and encouragement of friends, Teri Woods recognized the selling power of her story. She credits her overwhelming success to hard work and perseverance. Teri Woods often slept in her car and on the couches of acquaintances, as she spent countless hours selling her books on the streets of New York. Moving thousands of books primarily from the trunk of her car she was determined to have her story read. Her grassroots tactic paid off; Teri Woods became a self-made millionaire in just three years selling her novel, True to the Game. With the release of True to the Game, Teri Woods has reinvigorated the urban fiction market and created a growing trend in publishing. As owner of Teri Woods Publishing, Woods' published: True to the Game, DUTCH I, DUTCH II, Deadly Reigns I and II , Angel, B-More Careful, The Adventures of Ghetto Sam, Triangle of Sins, Rectangle of Sins, Tell Me Your Name, Predator and Double Dose. True to the Game, B-More Careful, DUTCH, Triangle of Sins, Rectangle of Sins, Deadly Reigns I and Deadly Reigns II has all been featured on the Essence Bestseller list numerous times collectively. Teri Woods Publishing has sold over 1 million copies independently and generated over 15 million dollars in gross revenue. Woods jump started the entire urban-book marketplace. Teri signed a five book deal with Grand Central Publishing in 2007. True to the Game II (GCP, 2007) and True to the Game III (GCP, 2008) both debuted on The New York Times Bestsellers list. Teri's first hardcover, the urban thriller, ALIBI will be published in August 2009
