With a veritable spate of Hood Classics under their belts including Boyz N The Hood, Menace II Society, Poetic Justice, Juice, & Higher Learning, Join Greg Alba and Coy Jandreau as they dive into the outrageous 1996 Wayans Brothers spoof comedy, Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. This cult classic skewers classic 'hood' movies with a wild blend of over-the-top humor, biting satire, and unforgettable one-liners. Starring the dynamic Shawn Wayans (White Chicks, Scary Movie) as the hapless yet determined Ashtray, and Marlon Wayans (Scary Movie, White Chicks) as the irreverent, street-smart Loc Dog, the film takes you on a riotous journey through the absurdities of urban life. Adding to the mayhem, John Witherspoon (Friday, House Party) delivers a powerhouse performance as Big Malcolm, whose hilariously candid observations bring the film's satirical edge to life. This 1993 classic blends romance and drama, following Justice (Jackson), a grieving poet, and Lucky (Tupac), a mail carrier with dreams beyond the streets, as they embark on a life-changing road trip from Los Angeles to Oakland. Alongside them are the fiery Iesha (Regina King, Watchmen, If Beale Street Could Talk) and her troubled boyfriend Chicago (Joe Torry, Tales from the Hood), whose turbulent relationship adds layers of tension. Directed by John Singleton (Boyz N The Hood, Higher Learning), the film delivers powerful themes of love, loss, and resilience, intertwined with heartfelt poetry from Maya Angelou. We react to the most iconic moments, including Justice & Lucky's First Meeting at the Hair Salon, The Road Trip Begins, The Heated Argument at the Gas Station, The Beach Scene, Chicago & Iesha's Explosive Fight, and The Emotional Finale. As an extra tribute to the film's cultural impact, we're also highlighting some of Tupac and Janet Jackson's biggest hits—Tupac's top 10 songs: California Love, Changes, Dear Mama, Hail Mary, Hit ‘Em Up, I Get Around, Keep Ya Head Up, 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted, All Eyez on Me, and Ambitionz Az a Ridah. Janet Jackson's top 10 songs: Rhythm Nation, That's The Way Love Goes, Together Again, All For You, Nasty, Escapade, Love Will Never Do (Without You), Any Time, Any Place, Control, and Again. Well, as you can see by the runtime on this episode, there's some changes coming this season. Long story short, I had to cut it down to either doing the episodes on Patreon only, or end the show altogether. Well, I still want to keep making episodes, so I went with the former. I explain further in the episode, as well as give a ten minute preview of the season premiere. Kicking off February we are bringing you the Hughes Brothers' follow up to their debut 1993 hit Menace II Society, Dead Presidents (1995). Perhaps overambitious, the film follows a circle of friends from the Bronx as the Vietnam War era impacts their lives and the various ways they try to cope or not. What it delivers in the way of stand out performances and a great soundtrack, it lacks in character dimension/motivation. For better and worse, it feels like a very 90's look at the 70's. +++++Outro: Blue Mitchell performing Delilah

We hear from a survivor of the Estonia ferry disaster in 1994, one of the deadliest shipping disasters since the Titanic. Also, Allen Hughes tells of the time when rap sensation, Tupac Shakur was fired from the crime movie Menace II Society. And finally, the ‘moon man of India' tells of the country's momentous mission to Mars. In 1993, a gritty and unflinching crime movie called Menace II Society was released to huge acclaim. The debut picture from the teenage directors, Allen and Albert Hughes, provided a deep dive into the harsh realities faced by many young African Americans growing up in Los Angeles. But behind the scenes, all was not well and the violence on-screen bled into real life. Rap sensation, Tupac Shakur – who had originally been cast to feature in the movie – had fallen out with the directors and was sacked during production. He promised retribution against the Hughes brothers, and his retribution would eventually land him time in jail. More than 30 years on from the movie's release, Allen Hughes shares his memories of that time with Matt Pintus. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Tupac Shakur pictured in 1993. The only thing better than talking to one Sean is when you add a second Shawn to the mix. Returning to the podcast this week, I'm thrilled to share this recent wonderfully rollicking, quick-witted, story, & insight-filled conversation I had with two of my dearest friends: the veteran Boston-based WBUR film critic Sean Burns & the award-winning internationally bestselling novelist S.A. Cosby. Zooming in to cover some of their (sometimes divisive) crime movie favorites not called THE GODFATHER, for this episode, we agreed to take a closer look at MENACE II SOCIETY, THE FUNERAL, BLOW, & WE OWN THE NIGHT, but then wound up celebrating, critiquing, & shouting out several other under-discussed crime movie faves as well. The perfect accompaniment to your summer travels or long commute to work, listen with a notebook handy to write down some of these great movies. Sean Burns' Bio: A film critic for WBUR's Arts & Culture and a contributing writer at North Shore Movies and Crooked Marquee, he was Philadelphia Weekly's lead film critic from 1999-2013 and worked as contributing editor at the Improper Bostonian from 2006-2014. His reviews, interviews, and essays have also appeared in Metro, The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, The Boston Herald, Nashville Scene, Time Out New York, Philadelphia City Paper, and RogerEbert.com. A graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Burns was a recurring guest on the late David Brudnoy's WBZ 1030 AM radio show, and in 2002, received an award for Excellence in Criticism from the Greater Philadephia Society of Professional Journalists. His writing has been called "jocular but serious, more like a 1940s daily reporter pounding out columns on a manual typewriter than a typical twenty-first-century navel-gazing film critic." Meanwhile, his sisters still tell him that he "swears too much and drives like an old lady." S.A. Cosby's Bio: S. A. Cosby is an Anthony Award-winning writer from Southeastern Virginia. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, was a New York Times Notable Book, and was named a best book of the year by NPR, The Guardian, and Library Journal, among others. His latest award-winning bestselling novel is All the Sinner's Bleed. When not writing, S.A. Cosby is an avid hiker, cinephile, and chess player. Adam and Chad try to definitely decide which of the most popular "hood movies" of the early 90's is the best. These films were hugely important to young Adam and Chad, and they want to know if they were right for loving them back in the day, and if their opinion has changed over the years. On the surface, both films are very similar. But "under the hood," there are a lot of major differences. What movie is better in your opinion? Who plays the better gangsta: Ice Cube as Doughboy or Larenz Tate as O-Dog?*SPOILER WARNING: FULL SPOILERS FOR BOTH FILMS**Support the show
