Houston, 1985. When you meet James Prince, you don't necessarily think "former criminal defense attorney." But that's exactly what he was for eight years before he became a wealth manager in Dubai. Yet Prince doesn't see the time he spent in his former career as a waste. That's because he sees every detour—and failure—as something he would have paid money to learn. While you're going to find out how to turn your entire attitude about failure around by listening to this episode, here's a fair warning: I talk about me at least half the time. That's because James and I were doing a simul-record—a term I just made up to describe when two people interview each other so they can each release the episode for their individual podcasts.

Before becoming the man who first discovered Drake, Jas Prince was born on October 30th, 1987 in Houston, Texas to his mother, Mary, and his father, James Prince – the CEO of Rap-A-Lot Records. Back when Rap-A-Lot was still looking to find its footing, Jas recalls showing up at his father's business to sweep the floors, work in the mail room, and occasionally hype up the label's newest release as a member of the street team. Since then, the company has established a reputation as one of hip-hop's most influential labels, an estate that Jas may one day very well inherit for himself. But with his father still going strong and not looking to retire anytime soon, Jas recognized he'd have to make his own way in the industry and he'd wind up doing so by discovering one of the biggest celebrity talents of recent memory. Looking to follow in his father's incredibly successful footsteps, in 2007, a then 19-year-old Jas went searching for an artist of his own to groom. While still in college, he scoured the internet for a potential client and ultimately stumbled upon the MySpace page of a Canadian rapper named Drake.

There, he mainly works as a businessman. J Prince is known for his work in the music label called Rap-a-Lot Records, which is established in Houston. In this company, he is currently working as a CEO, and this is one of the main sources of the current J Prince net worth, as well. He has been involved into music for more than 20 years, and during this time he has promoted numerous rap singers and bands, who are living in Houston. Today, he is also known for his efforts to promote neighborhoods and communities which are living in poor conditions. One example of such his efforts is known to be his idea to build a community at 5th Ward Neighborhood, where he actually was raised. This community will aim to support young people in their lives and help them to show their talents and abilities, thus excel in life. This effort was also noticed by Mayor Bill White and Houston City Council with naming January 30th as his day. In 2007, J Prince started another activity which was organizing another community through which J Prince wanted to inform young people about two dangerous illnesses – AIDS and HIV. In 1986, J Prince started to get attention when he founded the already mentioned label called Rap-a-Lot Records which is also one of the main sources of J Prince net worth. The company is also sometimes referred to as Smoke-a-Lot Records. The most famous artists which are promoted by this label are the “Geto Boys”. Thus, the company is mostly known for promoting rap artists and bands. The company for some time was working with Virgin Records and also Priority Records. In the 2000s, Rap-a-Lot Records were distributed by another label, called Asylum Records. Moreover, the title of the record label was even mentioned in a song by Notorious B.IG., the song being titled “Flava in Ya Ear”, where he says the following: “I’m not from Houston, but I Rap-a-Lot”. Thus, the company is known to a lot of rapping artists, and this popularity has also added up to the total amount of J Prince net worth. Other song in which the label is also mentioned is by Devin the Dude and Snoop Dogg in a song called “What a Job”.

In this episode of PoPolitickin, we politick with the one and only J Prince. For decades, serial entrepreneur James Prince presided over Rap-A-Lot Records, one of the first and most successful independent rap labels. In his memoir, he explains how he earned his reputation as one of the most respected men in Hip Hop. By staying true to his three principles of heart, loyalty, and commitment, and an unwavering faith in God, he has defeated many adversaries. Whether battling the systemic cycle of poverty, record label executives, boxing promoters, or corrupt DEA agents, Prince has always emerged victorious. Respect isn't given, it's earned. In recounting his compelling life story, Prince analyzes the art and science of earning respect - and giving respect - and how to apply these principles to your own life.
