This week, I'm joined by JASON P. WOODBURY (of Aquarium Drunkard) and filmmakers BRIAN LINDSTROM & ANDY BROWN to discuss their incredible new film LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL. We talked about Judee Sill's gnostic relationship to her music and how she backed it up in her lifestyle, what our introductions to her music were like, Sill's disdain of being lumped in with Christian Rock & opening for rock bands, her influence on Andy Partridge of XTC, how the filmmakers shaped the film over the past ten years, Tooth & Nail Records, the mythologizing of a subject's life in documentary filmmaking, Asylum Records and her ups and downs with David Geffen, Some Kind Of Monster, Sill's vulnerability and ego in her diary writings and drawings, how they chose to animate Sill's artwork and found her voice, Sill's influence on a new generation of musicians, her iconic Old Grey Whistle Test performance of “The Kiss,” how the film addresses childhood trauma, addiction, and resilience, what parts of Sill's life didn't fit into the film, and the power of Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Guided By Voices & SST Records, So join us as we talk about one of the greatest songwriters to ever be part of the cosmos, Judee Sill, on this week's Revolutions Per Movie.WATCH LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILLhttps://greenwichentertainment.com/film/JASON P. LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL is an intimate documentary portrait of a one-of-a-kind singer-songwriter from 1970s LA – Judee Sill. It charts her life from a troubled adolescence of addiction, armed robbery and prison through her meteoric rise in the music world and early tragic death. In two years, Judee went from living in a car to a deal with Asylum Records and the cover of Rolling Stone. As told by David Geffen, Linda Ronstadt, JD Souther, Jackson Browne and Graham Nash -- along with Judee herself -- the film explores Judee's unique musical style and the inspiring recent rediscovery of her singular music fostered by Shawn Colvin, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek of Big Thief, and Weyes Blood. Co-directors Brian Lindstrom and Andy Brown join us for a conversation how they discovered this nearly forgotten artist, their search for archival material on Judee Sill, finding the “right” way to tell her story, and connecting with wide array of artist, young and older who have been inspired by Judee's enduring work. Extreme Genes - America's Family History and Genealogy Radio Show & Podcast
Host Scott Fisher opens the show with David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org. The guys begin with some encouraging news from our friends at MyHeritage.com, based in Israel. Then, David shares the story of a recent discovery, prior to the war, of an ancient burial in Israel. 23andMe has made some very concerning news as hackers have accessed their site to obtain information on roughly one million DNA testers of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. The hacker's intentions are not known. In Norway, a woman lost an earring, and in the search for it found something much more interesting. Hear what it was. For some people, it has been a long time since hearing the voice of a parent. Hear what one man recently discovered that gave him back those voices… from 1946! Then, hear about what Conde Naste Traveler magazine has to say about the most haunted places in the US. Next, Fisher visits with Julie Hawkins Ennis of Maryland. Julie learned in recent years of her family connections to the so-called “GU-272,” the 272 people, identified so far, who had been enslaved at Georgetown University and then sold to buyers in Louisiana in 1838. The sale of these people bailed GU out of financial troubles. The story, which broke in 2016, has led to massive research to identify all the principals in the affair, as well as as many descendants as can be found. Recently, Julie played a key role in the organization of the first reunion of these descendants. Then, Julianne Mangin talks with Fisher about her finds in a mental institution in Connecticut. She knew about her grandmother… but not all the others! Hear about Julianne's journey to learn of her family's trials and particularly the impact they had on her mother. David then returns for another round of Ask Us Anything. That's all this week on Extreme Genes, America's Family History Show!
In this episode we invite the inimitable Robyn Hitchcock to reminisce about his heroically nonconformist career from the Soft Boys to 2022's Shufflemania! After Robyn explains his recent return to London from his adopted Nashville, Barney, Mark and Martin hear about his hippiefied but not entirely psychedelic '60s youth – plus his early immersion in the far-out folk of the Incredible String Band and the songs of his greatest influence Syd Barrett. He talks about how the Soft Boys did – and didn't – fit into the UK's punk scene of the late '70s, but also how they became a totemic cult influence on American acts from R.E.M. to Gillian Welch & David Rawlings. Clips from John Tobler's 1973 audio interview with '60s folk-rocker turned Asylum Records singer-songwriter David Blue provide an opportunity to discuss the former David Cohen's Greenwich Village buddy Bob Dylan and the huge influence on Robyn of Bobsongs like Blonde On Blonde's 'Visions of Johanna'. Meanwhile the 10th anniversary of the death of underground-press legend and Deviants rabble-rouser Mick Farren takes us back to the revolutionary '60s and the heyday of International Times – as well as to such seminal Farren pieces as 1976's NME rallying cry "The Titanic Sails at Dawn". Mark rounds off the episode with quotes from newly-added library pieces about 'Terry' hitmaker Lynn "Twinkle" Ripley (Evening Standard, 1964), Motown chauvinist Marvin Gaye (Phonograph Record, 1977), Henry Rollins né Garfield (Washington Post, 1981) and more… Many thanks to special guest Robyn Hitchock. Somewhere Apart: Selected Lyrics 1977–1997 is published by Tiny Ghost and available now. Pieces discussed: The Soft Boys, The Soft Boys live, Robyn Hitchock by J. Kordosh, Robyn Hitchcock by Pete Paphides, David Blue, Pop in the Police State, Rock – Energy for Revolution, The Titanic Sails at Dawn, Memories of Mick Farren, Black Flag, Marvin Gaye, Eddie Hinton, The Cramps, Twinkle and Chet Atkins.
This week on Joni Jams, Ryan flies into the dreamland-like world that is Don Juans Reckless Daughter (1977). Joni finds herself near completion of her time at Asylum Records and begins to take uncharted freedom in exploring with music. This episode addresses the controversies (The offensive cover), the music, and the world that Joni Mitchell creates on her ninth studio album. Thanks for listening!

Jackson Browne has always called the first song on his 1972 self-titled debut album a kind of modern fable. His inspiration for “Jamaica Say You Will" was a girl who worked in an organic food orchard on California's Zuma Beach, across the street from the Pacific Ocean, "like the Garden of Eden,” Browne once told an interviewer, “and she was a kind of Eden-like girl, too.”In the lyric, the girl leaves with her father to sail out into the world, “but my ship had not found the sea, as it were," Browne told Uncut magazine. “I wanted to have the cocoon of this relationship to just stay insulated from the world, but she was ready to move out into the world.”The song was a lament for the time he sheltered in that love affair. “I realized,” he added, “I'd been writing about the relationship I'd just left, not this new one I was in. So I learned something about myself and maybe found more closure or solace. … It's odd that that's exactly how songs come into being."The Song that Birthed a Label“Jamaica,” which Browne wrote when he was 20 in 1969, also played a big part in creating a new record label. In 1970, after listening to a demo of the song, artist manager David Geffen signed Browne and began looking for a record contract for him. Ultimately, after he couldn't get a deal anywhere else, Geffen co-founded Asylum Records in 1971 with Elliot Roberts. The story goes that Geffen had pitched Browne to Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun, saying, "You'll make a lot of money." To that, Ertegun reportedly replied, "You know what, David? I have a lot of money. Why don't you start a record company and then you'll have a lot of money." A deal then was struck in which Ertegun put up the initial funds and Atlantic Records distributed Asylum Records with the profits split 50/50. Jackson Browne was one of first artists Geffen signed for Asylum, of course; he was quickly joined on the new label that same year by Linda Ronstadt, John David Souther, David Blue, Joni Mitchell, Glenn Frey and others.CoversBut many people became familiar with “Jamaica Say You Will” even before they heard Jackson Browne's Asylum recording of it.That's because the song was released by The Byrds on their Byrdmaniax album for Columbia the year before Browne's debut. And after that, the song was covered in 1972 by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and by Tom Rush and then by Joe Cocker in 1975. The TV TreatmentThe tune even has had its television moment. In 1992, it was heard playing on the radio at the end of “The Wonder Years” episode "The Lake" from Season 5.(TV's time machine slipped a little, though. The episode's story line was set in August 1971, but that was several months before the Browne album was released.)Our Take on the TuneIn music, newness is often a magical ingredient, and everything about this song is new for us.Its Flood connection started a few weeks ago when Charlie brought home yet another new guitar, this time a sweet little Gretsch resonator that he intends to keep in one open tuning or another. Recently, playing around in open D, Bowen landed on “Jamaica,” which just seemed to lay so easily on the strings. The song was unfamiliar to Danny and Randy, but — true to their Flood nature — they took to it right away, immediately finding ways to enrich it. Just listen to Dan's smart, beautiful solos and to Randy's gorgeous harmonies on the choruses.Sure, our arrangement is still evolving, but we wanted to share it with you all while it still has that lovely new song smell. Leland Sklar is an American bassist and session musician. He rose to prominence as a member of James Taylor's backing band, which coaleced into a group in its own right, The Section. This group of musicians so frequently supported many of the artists on Asylum Records, both on stage and in the studio, that they became known as Asylum's de facto house band. Those artists would become the standard bearers of the singer-songwriter era in the 1970s. Since then, Leland has recorded and toured with artists such as James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Phil Collins, Toto, Lyle Lovett and many, many more. As a group member, session player, or touring musician, he has lent his talents to well over 2,000 albums. In addition, he has contributed to many motion picture and television show soundtracks. His backing band (Section), along with the addition of Steve Postell, has become a band that is now doing it for themselves - The Immediate Family.

Genius comes in all forms....On this episode we dive into a rock doc which just had it's world premiere down at DOC NYC; it's time for Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill. It's an is an intimate documentary portrait of a one-of-a-kind singer-songwriter from 1970s LA – Judee Sill. It charts her life from a troubled adolescence of addiction, armed robbery and prison through her meteoric rise in the music world and early tragic death. In two years, Judee went from living in a car to a deal with Asylum Records and the cover of Rolling Stone. As told by David Geffen, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and Graham Nash -- along with Judee herself -- the film explores Judee's unique musical style and the inspiring recent rediscovery of her singular music fostered by Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek of Big Thief, and Weyes Blood. We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with the directors of this documentary; .Andy Brown and Brian Lindstrom to talk about why they want to tell this story, the legacy of Judee in pop culture circles and so very much more....

Episode 78 Strange Synths Little Heard Sounds from Unique Synthesizers Playlist David Behrman, “Pools Of Phase Locked Loops,” from My Dear Siegfried (2005 XI Records). Synthesizers (homemade), David Behrman, Katharine Morton Austin. Recorded live at Radio Bremen in May 1972 and commissioned by Hans Otte. At a time when commercial models of analog synths were widely available, Behrman and other musicians such as Gordon Mumma and David Tudor insisted on creating purpose-built instruments using the same principles. Behrman explains, “The homemade synthesizers had 32 voltage-controlled triangle-wave generators built around a chip utilizing a circuit design called the Phase Locked Loop. The chip made smooth glides possible from one pitch to another. The homemade synthesizers also had voltage-controlled amplifiers, rows of small knobs and frequency counters with the aid of which the performers could retune individual oscillators during a performance.” 14:00 John Ridges, “Fugue In G” (Bach) from Computer Controlled Synthesizer Performances (1977 Tesseract Records). This work was made using a computer-controlled music synthesizer which its makers dubbed Mesmerelda. It was comprised on 200 integrated circuits that could create 96 different pitches assigned to six separate channels. Only one waveform was used, a square wave, and there was no envelope control. Hence, the simple organ-like tone of the piece. 4:49 John Ridges, “Ruffles” (Ridges) from Computer Controlled Synthesizer Performances (1977 Tesseract Records). From the same album comes “Ruffles” performed by composer John Ridges. This track featured a slightly more advanced computer music synthesizer they called the AD8. It featured up to eight synthesis boards each one relating to a single channel. So, eight pitches could be played at a time and there was filtering, waveform generation other than square waves, and simple envelope generation to provide a slightly more advanced sound. As Ridges wrote in the liner notes, with pride, “these pieces are generally free of the bizarre noises usually found on electronic synthesizer albums.” The pieces were recorded in real time without overdubs. 2:36 Patrick Gleeson, “Star Wars Theme (Luke's Theme)” (Williams). (1977 Mercury). Recorded and mixed at Different Fur, San Francisco, July 1977. The piece showcases various beds, rhythms, and sounds made using the E-mu modular synthesizer, also known as an Eµ synthesizer (it's original name). "Selections from the film performed on the world's most advanced synthesizer." Drums, Billy Cobham, Harvey Mason, James Levi, Ronnie Beck; Lyricon, Lenny Picket; Vocals, Sarah Baker; keyboards, performer (Breath Controller), engineered, produced, arranged, and conducted by Patrick Gleeson. 5:36 Bennie Maupin, “Crystals” from Moonscapes (1978 Mercury). Eµ synthesizer (E-mu Modular Synthesizer) programmed by Patrick Gleeson, who owned Different Fur Studios in the San Francisco area and owned an Eµ modular synthesizer (see the earlier Star Wars album which also featured this same synth.) Here, we have a different treatment of the same instrument by jazz woodwind player Maupin, who played Soprano Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Flute, Marimba, Glockenspiel, Eµ Synthesizer, and Computone Synthesizer Winddriver on this album. I picked this track because this is most stripped-down arrangement featuring only Maupin playing the Eµ synthesizer and other instruments. 1:19 Sylvester, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” from Step II (1978 Fantasy). One of the few albums to feature EML (Electronic Music Laboratories) Modular Synthesizers. String synthesizer, Electro-comp 101 synthesizer and 200 expander unit, Oberheim DS-2 Sequencer, Effects , Pat Cowley; organ, Electric piano, Clavinet, Michael C. Finden; Percussion, David Frazier; Producer, Lead Vocals, Piano, Sylvester. EML was a Connecticut-based synth maker that was around from about 1970 to 1984. They were best-known for their Electro-comp modular synths. The 101 was a duophonic semi-modular 44-note synth and the model 200 was an expander unit that added ring modulation, spring reverb, and high and low filters to the setup. It was interesting to hear this Moroder-like pulsating synth sound coming from something other than a Moog. 6:34 Pere Ubu, “I Will Wait” from Dub Housing (1978 Chrysalis). This second album from this Ohio group always figured high on my playlist of favorites. I was mostly fascinated by the synthesizer fills and hijinks by Allen Ravenstine that punctuated much of the group's music with the quirkiest of sounds, all blended and mixed to provide many weird hooks and twists. This is another example of the EML, Electro-comp duphonic modular synthesizer although almost used in a polar opposite way than Sylvester. This is a unique sound from the time. Performers, Allen Ravenstine, David Thomas, Scott Krauss, Tom Herman, Tony Maimone. Engineered by Ken Hamann at SUMA Studios, Painesville, Ohio, 8-9/78. Ravenstine is still active and an electronic musician although he has left the EML for other synthesizer frontiers. He remains very much the experimental improviser. 1:45 Pere Ubu, “Navvy” from Dub Housing (1978 Chrysalis). Performers, Allen Ravenstine, David Thomas, Scott Krauss, Tom Herman, Tony Maimone. Engineered by Ken Hamann at SUMA Studios, Painesville, Ohio, 8-9/78. Features sounds of the EML Electro-comp modular synthesizer by Allen Ravenstine. 2:40 Pere Ubu, “On the Surface” from Dub Housing (1978 Chrysalis). Performers, Allen Ravenstine, David Thomas, Scott Krauss, Tom Herman, Tony Maimone. Engineered by Ken Hamann at SUMA Studios, Painesville, Ohio, 8-9/78. Features sounds of the EML Electro-comp modular synthesizer by Allen Ravenstine. 2:37 Pascal Languirand, “O Nos Omnes” from De Harmonia Universalia (1980 Polydor). I am featuring a track that uses, among other instruments, the Farfisa Synthorchestra, the famous Italian's company entry into the string synthesizer fray. The Syntorchestra was split into two keyboard sections, strings (polyphonic), and mono synth voices. It was a hybrid organ and synthesizer and used much by Klaus Schulze and other German electronic musicians for the short time that it was available from 1975 to 1978. Nine slider controls were positioned next to a 3-octave keyboard and provided some “chaotic” control episodes for this much beloved and rare keyboard. 7:16 Moebius, “Clone Zone” from Moebius (1979 Plastic Poison). Yes, a progressive rock group that utilized the modular synthesizers developed by Serge Tcherepnin, Rich Gold, and Randy Cohen at CalArts in late 1972. By the mid-1970a, Tcherepnin left CalArts and began to manufacture his instruments in Hollywood. Serge modules were designed to bring many elements of the circuits controllable by the performer, patching them in unusual ways beyond what was considered normal for a given module. The model used on this album probably had a 16-stage sequencer introduced by the company, and I think you can hear such patterns in this song. Listen for the bubbling, sequenced sounds that are contrasted to the monophonic solos of the Minimoog and patch sounds of the ARP Odyssey. I think the track opens with the Serge pattern. Drums, Evan Kaplan; Minimoog synthesizer, Bruce Courtois; Roland Sh3a, AP 2600 synthesizers, Steve Roach; Serge modular, Minimoog synthesizer, vocals, written by, Bryce Robbley; Serge modular synthesizer, Doug Lynner. 4:55 Moebius, “Song For Lya,” from Moebius (1979 Plastic Poison). Serge, Oberheim, and Minimoog synthesizers, vocals, written by, Bryce Robbley; Serge, Oberheim synthesizers, written by, Doug Lynner; Violin, John Stubbs. Listen closely to tune-out the parts by the Odyssey and Minimoog and you will experience a lovely bed laid down by the Serge. Moebius had three members, one a violinist, heard in this tune blending with the Serge. Although the group used a Sennheiser vocoder on another track, the vocal distortion on this track may have actually been the voice processed with the Serge. 3:15 Henry Kucharzyk, “Play Dot Sam” from Walk The Line - Three New Works By Henry Kucharzyk (1985 Artifact Music). This work is performed at the Samson Box at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), Stanford University, Palo Alto, California. This track is an escapee from the 1970s but nonetheless fills a void in that period when commercial synthesizers were moving to digital technology and were quite expensive. The Samson Box was a computer-based digital synthesizer created in 1977 by Peter Samson, who worked at the university. Samson stands for the “Systems Concepts Digital Synthesizer. It was a one-off special-purpose dedicated audio computer designed for use by student composers at Center for Computer Research in Musical and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University. 3:06 Salvatore Martirano, “The SalMar: Part One” from The SalMar Construction (2014 Sub Rosa). Another escapee from the 1970s was this performance at IRCAM in Paris in 1983. Salvatore Martirano, an American composer, invented the one-of-a-kind Sal-Mar Construction designed for real-time performance of electronic music. It was created from 1969 to 1972 at the University of Illinois. The analog synthesizer looked like a large drawing table with an array of 291 touch-sensitive connections to enable the sound generating circuits. Behind it all were some computer circuits salvaged from the Illiac II computer music system and they generated random sequences with which the performer could interact while managing four parallel processes governing the 16 oscillators, applying pitch, timbre, amplitude and envelope parameters to the sound. Martirano toured the world with the performing/composing music machine and described his live performances in the following manner: “The composer, in performance, interacts with the machine as it composes, creating spontaneously four melodic lines which move throughout the concert space via a network of 24 overhead speakers.” This performance was by Martirano while in Paris at IRCAM. 18:59 Herbie Hancock, “Rough” from Future Shock (1983 Columbia). Hancock was well known as an experimenter of new synthesizer technology. During the early stages of the home computer revolution, Hancock used an AlphaSyntauri synthesizer as part of his ensemble of instruments. The AlphaSyntauri was an add-in synth for the Apple II computer, with its own sound-generating circuit board. The company was around from about 1980 to 1985. Its claim to fame what that it was much more affordable than the digital synthesizers made by New England Digital and Fairlight, each of which cost in the $30,000 to $50,000 range. The AlphaSyntauri was $1500. At this price you got 16-voice polyphony, 16 digital oscillators, and envelope generator, keyboard, and a sequencer capable of storing up to 7000 notes. It's affordable sequencing was a major attraction. This was before the Apple Macintosh was introduced, and with that the AlphaSyntauri was made immediately obsolete. But not before Hancock was able to work it into some of his electronic jazz tracks. If you listen carefully you can pick-out the sounds of the AlphaSyntauri because of all of the other synths and instruments on this track. Backing Vocals, Bernard Fowler, Grandmixer D.ST., Nicky Skopelitis, Roger Trilling; Bass, Bill Laswell; Drums, Sly Dunbar; Lead Vocals, Lamar Wright; Fairlight CMI Synthesizer, AlphaSyntauri Synthesizer, Emulator Synthesizer, Herbie Hancock; Prophet-5 Synthesizer, Michael Beinhorn; Turntables, Voice, Grandmixer D.ST. 6:55 Opening background music: P.F.M. Label: Asylum 11041Year: 1974Condition: M-Last Price: $12.00. Not currently available for sale. The hit A side is a delightful pop tune, but the real treasure here is the B side. (Yes, it's another one of those!) If you've ever felt a little awkward and out of place at a party, you'll know just what she's talking about! One of Mitchell's very best pieces of pure poetry... have a listen to the mp3 "snippet" to hear what I mean. It's also one of those very short songs I sing the praises of — she sings an entire volume in under 2 1/2 minutes! Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Asylum Records factory sleeve. It has Mint labels with a small star stamped on the B side. The vinyl looks untouched, and the audio sounds pristine Mint. (This scan is a representative image from our archives.)

In this episode, her self-titled debut was the first official release on David Geffen's star-making Asylum Records. While she crafted some of the most beautifully bizarre music of the 70s singer-songwriter era, her work is still largely unknown. This episode is all about Judee Sill. The incredible music she made and the sad, tragic—at times, shocking and unbelievable— life she led. The first part of the episode tells Judee's story and the second part breaks down her influences, who she influenced and what's happening with her music today. For fans of Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Brian Wilson, Bach, the Laurel Canyon music scene, 70s singer-songwriters. To look upon Leland Sklar's discography is to unfurl a nearly endless scroll of iconic artists and historic albums. The tasteful bass lines he skillfully crafted as part of the Asylum Records' house band during the '70s and '80s are woven into the fabric of popular music. In this episode, Leland treats host Josh Paul to all his his wit and wisdom through session stories, his approach to playing and gear, and the musical drive that has allowed him to retain his vibrant creativity and enthusiasm for playing through the years.
In this episode, John returns to Pixel studios to chat with Maisie Peters and producer Joe Rubel about how they wrote, recorded and produced Maisie's debut album ‘You Signed Up For This'. Going through their WhatsApp log of voice notes and ideas, Maisie and Joe look back on the chaotic methods of bringing an album together over lockdown, pulling apart how they carefully married Maisie's original acoustic sound with more produced elements. Alongside the wealth of Joe's production goodness, Maisie sheds some light on her lyric writing process, from the internal rhyming patterns and carefully considered syllables in her writing, to the subtle nods hidden throughout each track. Listen to find out why Maisie wouldn't play instruments on her own songs, how to proceed after deciding it's time to write a banger, and which part of a song you will now have to try and clap along to. Josh Fitzgerald (Movies That Rock: The Podcast) joins Nick as they discuss the life and career of singer-songwriter Judee Sill, a beautiful soul who left this world far too soon. She was famously the first artist signed to David Geffen's legendary Asylum Records in 1971. But her troubled private life prevented her from becoming a bigger star and died at age 35 in 1979. Although she's largely an unknown figure in popular music, her influence and stature has considerably grown in recent years. Some of Sill's famous admirers include Andy Partridge, Liz Phair and Laura Veirs. Listen to this episode and discover what makes Sill a special artist.

ABOUT J PRINCE J Prince net worth It has been announced that the overall amount of J Prince net worth today reaches 45 million dollars, which he has earned through his involvement into music industry. There, he mainly works as a businessman. J Prince is known for his work in the music label called Rap-a-Lot Records, which is established in Houston. In this company, he is currently working as a CEO, and this is one of the main sources of the current J Prince net worth, as well. He has been involved into music for more than 20 years, and during this time he has promoted numerous rap singers and bands, who are living in Houston. Today, he is also known for his efforts to promote neighborhoods and communities which are living in poor conditions. One example of such his efforts is known to be his idea to build a community at 5th Ward Neighborhood, where he actually was raised. This community will aim to support young people in their lives and help them to show their talents and abilities, thus excel in life. This effort was also noticed by Mayor Bill White and Houston City Council with naming January 30th as his day. In 2007, J Prince started another activity which was organizing another community through which J Prince wanted to inform young people about two dangerous illnesses – AIDS and HIV. In 1986, J Prince started to get attention when he founded the already mentioned label called Rap-a-Lot Records which is also one of the main sources of J Prince net worth. The company is also sometimes referred to as Smoke-a-Lot Records. The most famous artists which are promoted by this label are the “Geto Boys”. Thus, the company is mostly known for promoting rap artists and bands. The company for some time was working with Virgin Records and also Priority Records. In the 2000s, Rap-a-Lot Records were distributed by another label, called Asylum Records. Moreover, the title of the record label was even mentioned in a song by Notorious B.IG., the song being titled “Flava in Ya Ear”, where he says the following: “I’m not from Houston, but I Rap-a-Lot”. Thus, the company is known to a lot of rapping artists, and this popularity has also added up to the total amount of J Prince net worth. Other song in which the label is also mentioned is by Devin the Dude and Snoop Dogg in a song called “What a Job”.
So I discovered Fallon on the promos, and featured him in no.22 of Jagged Jungle with his new single YUP, since then he smashed it with over 4 million streams with that one record alone. He dropped another banger Whistle which was a remake of 'There it go' "Juelz Santana" and with the huge support from his previous single, he was signed by Atlantic records label, Asylum Records. He's already dropping some major tracks as Fallon with supports from Claptone, Mat.Joe, Gorgon City, and Fisher. I'm excited to delve into the secret of his success and who he is. From Memphis To Muscle Shoals & More. Una semana después, el día 19, llegará Bob's Back Pages: A Night Of Bob Dylan's Songs. J.D. Long Road Out Of Eden.

Escuchar audio

John Prine (born October 10, 1946) is an American country/folk singer-songwriter. He has been active as a composer, recording artist, and live performer since the early 1970s. Born and raised in Maywood, Illinois, Prine learned to play the guitar at the age of 14. Subsequently, serving in West Germany with the U.S. armed forces, by the late 1960s he had moved to Chicago, where he worked as a mailman, writing and singing songs as a hobby. Becoming a part of the city’s folk revival, he was discovered by Kris Kristofferson, resulting in the production of Prine’s self-titled debut album through Atlantic Records in 1971. After receiving critical acclaim, Prine focused on his musical career, recording three more albums for Atlantic. He then signed to Asylum Records, where he recorded an additional three albums. In 1984 he co-founded Oh Boy Records, an independent record label with which he would release most of his subsequent albums. After his battle with squamous cell cancer in 1998, Prine’s vocals deepened into a gravel-voice, resulting in the award-winning album Fair & Square (2005). Widely cited as one of the most influential songwriters of his generation, Prine is known for humorous lyrics about love, life, and current events, as well as serious songs with social commentary, or which recollect melancholy tales from his life.

In this week's episode, we're featuring George Jones' last album of the 20th Century: "Cold Hard Truth" (1999). After an association with MCA for most of the 90s which resulted in decent sales but not so many radio hits, he found himself signed to Asylum Records - a signing which turned out to be his last major label deal. At 68 years of age, Jones was still in sterling vocal form and all that was asked of him was that he "do the record he would have done 20 years ago had he been sober". Jones approached the project with vigour, laying down the vocal with the pickers live in studio for all ten tracks with the intention of coming back to touch up certain parts later. However, after a serious alcohol-related SUV crash, those touch ups never happened. The Possum's near-death experience scared him into sobriety for good, and while he was hospitalised, Asylum released the album's first single. "Choices" wasn't given the radio attention it deserved - but to many fans, and perhaps to Jones himself - it served as a bittersweet summary of his career. Alongside the stark title track this album saw Jones return to his hard country best - after half a century of doing it better than just about anybody else, despite his self-inflicted pitfalls.

We absolutely loved chatting with Anna Clendening at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego! We talk tears, affairs, therapy, makeup, OCD, divorce, backpack leashes, Coke Zero Vanilla, and so much more! Come laugh and cry with us. "From the moment pop singer-songwriter Anna Clendening appeared on the scene, her music hit home with thousands—and very quickly, millions—of people.Granted, that moment came when she least expected it: One night about five years ago, at home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Clendening recorded a video of herself singing an acoustic version of “Gas Pedal,” the monster hit from Bay Area rapper Sage The Gemini, and casually posted it online. It quickly went viral, so she began making more videos and eventually garnered over 2.5 million followers online. Less than a year later, she snagged her first major television appearance: competing on America's Got Talent. (Her audition also went viral: onstage, she bravely described overcoming crippling anxiety to appear that day, then wowed the judges with a chill-inducing rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” on her acoustic guitar.)Though by 2016, she realized she wanted to establish herself as an artist in her own right: “I think it's cool that people hear a song and they want to hear me sing it,” she says, “But what really connects me to music is the words. I really did not want to be a cover artist. For me, that sounds like purgatory,” she laughs. “You’re doing music, but you're not doing your own music. So in early 2016, I started writing.”In 2017, Clendening’s breakout acoustic version of her single, “Boys Like You,” proved she has what it takes to go toe-to-toe with pop’s power players. The song—which Clendening says she conceptualized as a tongue-in-cheek, script-flipping version of Justin Bieber's “Love Yourself”—has amassed over 12+ million streams on Spotify (without any official Spotify playlist support), plus an additional 25+ million views on YouTube. Just in time for summer, Asylum Records released a sleek new version of the song June 1, 2018.Stylistically, Clendening’s songs range from acoustic to alternative pop with an edge, but each is hook-heavy and relatable. Vocally, she can deliver incredibly personal material with a honeyed grace (as she does in the not-yet-released “Drowning” which she wrote about her own struggles with mental health), but can also carry a power-pop chorus with confidence. In terms of career inspiration, she cites artist-songwriters Sia and Julia Michaels.Throughout her growth as an artist over the last few years, Clendening has also continued expanding her social media presence with a YouTube channel (nearly 600,000 subscribers) and on Instagram (over 540,000 followers), where she often “field-tests” the hooks she’s working on in real time to get feedback from her fans. She also regularly shares her experiences with her own mental health. “There’s this huge stigma around mental illness,” she says. “It’s so weird to see people be like, ‘Well, I don’t want depression, I don’t want anxiety!’ This is just a normal part of my life. It shouldn’t be glamorized or romanticized, but it should be normalized.”Ultimately, though Clendening has spent years honing her craft and building a loyal fanbase, this is just the beginning." -Paradigm Agencyhttps://www.annaclendening.com/“When you really do something because you love it, everything else falls into place. ”— Anna ClendeningCredits:Theme Song: Scott Russo & Design: Oscar Rodriguez & Photo: Daisy Ann TomWe want to hear from you! Long before he became best friends with the Clintons and starting spending his days on a yacht in Mallorca with his idle rich friends, David Geffen was a kid in LA who wanted to run a music label that put artists first. That label was Asylum Records. Launched in 1971, Asylum was for a few golden years the home of fantastic, legendary artists like Judee Sill, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits and even (briefly) Bob Dylan. The Eagles also were on Asylum. To see the videos featured in this episode, visit musicraygun.com/playlists.

In this week's episode, Barney Hoskyns and Mark Pringle are joined by Chris Campion all the way from Pioneertown, California. The subject of Chris' upcoming book, John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, leads into a wide-ranging and discursive conversation about L.A. in the '60s and the music and madness of Arthur Lee and Charles Manson. Continuing the Southern California theme, the three men hear excerpts from a 1993 audio interview with the late Elliot Roberts in which the legendary manager talks about his client Joni Mitchell's house, the Eagles, and the impact of cocaine on the L.A. scene. Finally, in the archive highlights section, Mark selects an interview with Keith Richards' mother, a live review of Jimi Hendrix playing London's Bag O'Nails club in 1967 and – returning to the L.A. theme – a 1972 interview with Elliot Roberts' managerial/Asylum Records partner David Geffen. Produced by Jasper Murison-Bowie Pieces discussed: Inside Grime, Papa John Phillips, Arthur Lee, Devendra Banhart, Elliot Roberts, Little Feat, Fear and Loathing in Little Feat?, Lowell George, The Rolling Stones/Keith Richard's mum, Rik Gunnell, Jimi Hendrix @ Bag O'Nails, David Geffen, Talking Heads on Eno, Merle Haggard, Lenny Waronker and George Michael
Since the late 1970's, both Evelyn Shriver and Susan Nadler have worked with an impressive list of country music's biggest names. Armed with their shared PR experience, the duo headed up Asylum Records as the first women to ever helm a major country music label and flipped Nashville's Music Row on its ear, building longtime partnerships with Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Lorrie Morgan, Randy Travis and more. Their countless years of experience, legendary debauchery and hilarious stories of life behind-the-scenes and on the road are now part of a new podcast courtesy of Momument Records called Shady Ladies Of Music City, which encourages listeners to submit their own country music rumors for discussion on the program, to find out if they're tall tales or legendarily confirmed stories. Today, Susan and Evelyn sit down to discuss the homogenized state of mainstream country radio, Pittsburgh's National Record Mart (the first music store chain ever in the United States), the industry's reaction to the launch of the compact disc, their childhood memories of 45RPM singles, and how to get rid of gold records. Podcast info, social media and more are available at shadyladiesofmusiccity.com.
Evelyn Shriver will say her story is not as colorful as her co-host Susan’s, but we beg to differ. She may not have spent time in prison, but at 17 she left home for New York City, and got her first job working with mega movie stars like Cary Grant, Bette Davis, and Joan Crawford. Her introduction into the music industry was with Cher and Diana Ross, and she was part of the team that launched People Magazine, MTV and Entertainment Tonight. See what we mean….that’s pretty colorful. “Shady Ladies of Music City” will delve into the life Susan and Evelyn shared running Asylum Records and working with clients like Randy Travis, George Jones and Willie Nelson, but first, take some time to get to know the other half of your hosting duo, Evelyn Shriver. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Susan Nadler will tell you her life got a whole lot more fun when she met her co-host Evelyn Shriver in 1988, but truth be told she had already lived a lot of life. Before she even started her legendary career in the music industry, she had already lived in three different countries, evaded a 27 year sentence in a Mexican prison for smuggling hash, successfully run a popcorn stand out of Key West, and happened to find her way into PR via the Benson and Hedges Blues Tour. “Shady Ladies of Music City” will delve into the life Susan and Evelyn shared running Asylum Records and working with clients like Randy Travis, George Jones and Willie Nelson, but first, take some time to get to know one half of your hosting duo, Susan Nadler. Josefina is a singer-songwriter based in Chicago, originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has traveled to and lived in places all over the world, from Paris to Beijing, and plenty of these experiences have made their way into her lyrics. Her lush vocal stylings pair with alt-country production chock full of piano, B-Bender, Pedal Steel, and 12-string that would have found an easy home on Asylum Records circa 1970s. But this isn’t a throwback to Joni or Emmylou. This is a modern girl making modern music with a little twang and an infectious lightness of being. SHOW INFORMATION: www/TonyTrombo.com NEW!: Talking Zappa APP for Android! Click here: www.TalkingZappa.info . My special guest for this show is ESSRA MOHAWK! Her first record, The Boy With The Way, credited to Jamie Carter, was issued on Liberty Records in 1964. As Sandy Hurvitz, she was then discovered by Shadow Morton, who placed her songs with both the Shangri-Las ("I'll Never Learn") and the Vanilla Fudge ("The Spell That Comes After"). While living in New York City in 1967 she met Frank Zappa, who persuaded her to perform for a short time with The Mothers of Invention and then signed her to his production company Bizarre. Her first album Sandy's Album Is Here At Last was released on Verve/Bizarre in December 1968. 1969 she was signed by Reprise Records after executive Mo Ostin discovered her singing at a club in New York. The resulting album, Primordial Lovers, was later stated as being "one of the best 25 albums ever made" in Rolling Stone magazine. The album featured contributions from CSN&Y drummer Dallas Taylor and former Rhinoceros members Doug Hastings and Jerry Penrod. Her third, self-titled, album came out on Asylum Records in 1974. The next album, Essra, was released on yet another label, Private Stock, in 1976. During that period, she also worked as a session and background singer, for John Mellencamp, Carole King and later she performed with the Jerry Garcia Band, and recorded and arranged background vocals for Kool & the Gang. In 1982 after recording another album in L.A., she worked with McFadden and Whitehead in Philadelphia, penning "Not With Me" for their Capitol album, Movin' On. She released another solo album, E-Turn, before Cyndi Lauper had a big hit with her song "Change of Heart" in 1986.
