In this mechanical, abandoned episode of Tubi or Not Tubi, we are entering the darkest depths of unknown terrors in the 2009 film, Pandorum, directed by Christian Alvert and starring Dennis Quaid.   2009 is the year before 2010, and when it comes to the science fiction of that time everything seemes to feel like eating at Applebees. So of course one must wonder what happens when you eat Applebees at Tubi.    That made no sense. I'm keeping it in.

Today Matt and Todd are joined by Mike McCarty to discuss a favorite from 1968. Quatermass and the Pit, (or, if you have the time, watch Five Million Years to Earth the USA title). Quatermass and the Pit (1968) stars: James Donald, Andrew Keir (as Quatermass), Barbara Shelley, and Julian Glover. Directed by Roy Ward Baker. Written by the legend of British Science Fiction: Nigel Kneale, Quatermass and the Pit takes you to a deep pit, excavated in the underground of a London Building. What is found within begins to warp the minds of all around it, causing fear and chaos. Quatermass and the Pit will be enjoyed by fans of Dr. Who, or movies like Halloween III, Prince of Darkness and Pandorum. This is a classic blend of sci-fi and horror. Already well-known by Mike and Matt, this was a first-watch for Todd and an instant classic. This is a great time, check it out. We couldn't find this streaming anywhere in the US, but the fantastic Blu Ray is available and alive with 60s London Nostalgia, I thought it was a nice clean print.

This is ultimately a silly movie, a copy of a copy of a copy of Event Horizon that's also been printed on toilet issue. Not so bad it's good, just not good. Author and critic Zack Handlen made the mistake of offering to return for Pandorum, 2009's "what if we stuck a bunch of grimy Jell-O to some warehouse walls and filmed a live-action 'Space Madness' meets Event Horizon" sci-fi. The movie starts out well -- good atmospherics; good partner chemistry between Quaid and Ben Foster -- but as Zack notes, most of the interesting stuff happened before the movie started. And after we find out the enemy isn't a giant snacky space arachnid, well, it's a tough sit. (How tough? We measured its length in, variously, feet of blanket knitted, Lego kits assembled, and online games of Risk played.) Surrounded by the detritus of the other, better properties Pandorum tried to rip off, we talked about confusing ship layouts, Virtuosity, which member of Roxette wrote Nadia's dialogue, Quaid's search for emotional truth, and why hypersleep pods in the future come with tooth-whitening strips. We don't normally dedicate a month to an actor, but this guy has starred in some neat sci-fi flicks. We saw him in November with Enemy Mine and thought, what about his other films like Innerspace, Frequency, or Pandorum. A high concept sci-fi action thriller, the film concerns a group of space faring amnesiacs awaking from hyper sleep to find themselves adrift in the cosmos, and beset upon by a horde of rampaging cannibal monsters. Starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster, as well as featuring MMA veteran Cung Le in one of his earlier film performances, the film boasts strong performances in both acting and in terms of it's occasional spurts of intense stunt work. While the film's script boasts many fascinating ideas and concepts, it's odd balance of action and psychological horror results in a somewhat flat experience that largely fails to find it's footing.
