This week, I invited my four siblings--Cassie Gadd, Brad Singley, Brett Singley, and Hayley Kirkland--into the studio to talk about our top family movies. We intended to each share 5 favorite movies from our childhood and then in our own families, but we definitely got carried away. I'm going to list our childhood movies and then our current favorite family movies by the person who recommended them. I'll omit the ones that we mentioned but do not recommend. (Sorry, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) We also talk about how we make family movie nights happen and what they look like for each of us. Of course, check ratings and Commonsensemedia.org to decide if these movie are appropriate for your families. Episode 3 takes us all the way back to the 1960s, as we discuss "That Darn Cat." It's a movie with everything you need: strong women and cats. Syn the cat is the feline star of the show and of this episode. We recap and review the movie, and discuss Syn's life and acting prowess as "Darn Cat," or D.C.. Audrey digs into the archives for Movie Magic. And Melissa's surprise scenario asks us to put ourselves into D.C.'s paws for a day. I guess this could be a Canada Day Long Weekend Special? The song this week is "The Cat Came Back," a song written in the 1890s by a Tin Pan Alley songwriter but made famous by a Canuck. The first version is by Sonny James, a country dude who picks n grins his way through this Goofy Great. The man, the myth Fred Penner didn't pen the song, but people think he did. So let's call it Canadian! His version is wild ... and it's for the kids, so there's extra meows. Does it fade out into "Break on Through" by The Doors? It's a chlling tale of psychopathy, either way. The third in the litter is by Sweden's Stomachmouths, who combine the song with "Hit The Road Jack" and add some proper piano and clothespin-on-nose vocals. Stefan Kery really hits those 3's! This is the one to turn the wee ones onto garage rock. We were going to do a surf version by The Phantom Surfers but technical problems scuppered that - That Darn Cat!!!
It's no surprise that Disney has a habit of updating and redoing classic films from their back catalog. Whether the end result is good or not remains to be seen. However, we're going to pop some Benadryl and do our best not to swear as we try to tell you that 1997's That Darn Cat is not that bad. www.notthatbadcast.com Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/notthatbadcast Social Media - @notthatbadcast (X, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, Spoutible) Learn more about your ad choices. Today we are excited to share with you some of our favorite childhood movies, as well as some of the movies we plan on showing to our children. As you know, we are screen free in our normal life. However, maybe once every two months, we do a family movie night. We do have a running list of what we are going to watch with our children. We will also share some of the movies that have impacted our life as adults that we may or may not show to our children. Something we look for in a movie are the family relationships. Something can be rated G and totally be undermining the family culture and values we want to put into our children. When we think of anything our children are consuming, we are thinking - What are the ideas that they are cultivating from this? Are they getting new ideas that are inspirational, shaping their moral character, giving them vision for the future or are these ideas corrupting, corroding or just zapping their brains with nothing worthwhile in the film? Unfortunately, there is a lot of stupidity in children's media. Here is the list of movies we talk about in today's podcast:Elisha:- The Sound of Music- The Happiest Millionaire - Swiss Family Robinson (1960 Disney version)Katie:- Seven Brides for Seven Brothers- Hayley Mills films: - The Parent Trap (1961) - Pollyanna (1960) - That Darn Cat! Sometimes my conversations with Rob take an unexpected turn or two ... not unlike the experience of careening down the 10 with him during rush hour while I'm on my phone trying to find out where we were supposed to be twenty minutes before. But that's another story for another day.Today's conversation took an odd trip down memory lane. A journey neither of us expected, but were happy to take.We shared our experiences growing up and being involved in organizations that, while they may be a bit politically incorrect today, were a big part of our lives and made us into the men we are today. Our experiences with our friends, fathers, and leaders in Scouting and Indian Guides were instrumental in shaping our personalities and sensibilities while we were in school. And believe it or not, we get there by starting a conversation off by discussing (much to our mutual amusement), the dysfunctional father-son dynamic between Tyrion and Tywin Lannister (from GAME OF THRONES).Never fear, however. There are plenty of liberties taken with the storyline as we bounce from life stage to life stage and eventually wind up talking about Disney and the influence Disney had on our culture and our lives. For those of us who grew up in the 60s and 70s, Disney's rise to preeminent power in the entertainment industry is nothing short of miraculous. After all, these were the people that brought us THAT DARN CAT.More on that from Rob in the podcast.I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording it today.I invite you to listen in on my weekday conversations with my friend and business partner, Robert Meyer Burnett, as we talk about the things we love: great movies, inspiring television programming, nostalgic genre entertainment, and pop culture.- Mike Bawden, co-host of the ROADTRIPPIN' PodcastThis is an original show produced for the PGS podcast network and was recorded on April 12, 2022.

In this episode we talk about Disney in the years leading up to the death of Walt Disney. We will talk about all the films released between 1965-1966. The time period was highlighted by That Darn Cat with Hayley Mills and the animated feature The Jungle Book. Thanks for listening!
If only the differences between the original That Darn Cat! and this 90s remake was the missing explanation mark. Disappointingly, this movie doesn't really live up to its predecessor in any real way. But it's also just way, way too strange to say it's an outright bad movie. The tone is stunningly bizarre unlike anything we've seen so far on this Disney odyssey, creating more questions and rabbit holes to go down than one might expect from THAT DARN CAT.

Another blah-de-blah per request! Howdy out to all my pen pals, “YOU'RE ALIVE!” Also appreciating the kindhearted nature of folks who feel they “ought” to do better. Hopefully by this time hunkering down at home has shown most people how using “social” media to solely keep-in-touch isn't very healthy. Going through Pit episodes 20, 21, and 22. Basic steps in each episode of the story.#20 “Bark At The Moon”#21 “Up The Damned Staircase”#22 “The Endless Night At Collinwood” In all of these episodes, I shall let loose my newest slogan, which is: “To boldly go where EVEN Bella Heathcote's Josette has NEVER gone before!” :)Technical problems with The Addams Family scene in #22, with love to Lurch (Ted Cassidy), however strange… on either side. Also some love for John Karlen as I continue performing the role of Willie Loomis through this series. Later topics are lack of fear to “spoilers”, enjoying a story, watching “That Darn Cat” again, going to a source over relying on gossip, as well as how I moderated alcohol beginning in 2007 and 2008. (Advertising posters will display, “Drink responsibly,” but whoever explains how that works?) Current detoxing and moderation this year. How other things make efforts to be moderated through regulation, whereas social networks do not currently carry the same regulations that other addictive substances or even appliances have. Fun wrap up with my enjoyment of the commentary for “The Ribos Operation” by Mary Tamm and Tom Baker.
Come watch That Darn Cat! with us. It's a disaster of tangents and being very angry at the pushy guy. (no seriously, after the movie Sara complains about her microphone for 15 minutes. We're back and venturing once more into the deep! Each week on Deep in the Plus, we pull a different movie or TV show from the Disney plus vault and tell you the history, the details, give our review and tell you if it’s worth your time. This week, we have a classic for you, the very first Disney movie to star Haley Mills – it’s Pollyanna! A young orphan Pollyanna, played by Hayley Mills, believes life's most difficult problems can always be surmounted by a positive attitude. But when she moves in with her very proper Aunt Polly, played by Jane Wyman, Pollyanna is introduced to a range of disheartened people who challenge her upbeat outlook. Not to be discouraged, she sets to work spreading hope and good cheer. However, when the entire community begins a campaign in opposition to her aunt, Pollyanna's goodwill is strained. So travel back to a simpler time as we experience an American classic and we take you deep in the plus. Pollyanna While this was the first Disney movie for Haley Mills, she went on to star in some unforgettable films for the company such as The Parent Trap, In Search of the Castaways, Summer Magic and That Darn Cat! In the 1980s, she also came back to reprise her role as the twins, Susan and Sharon, in Parent Trap II and again in Parent Trap III! I can only hope we get a chance to see these on Disney+ someday. Click to the video below to see our full review of Pollyanna. Matt comments on the rise of streaming services, particularly Disney+ and the old movies available like "That Darn Cat" and other films with child star Haley Mills.
All good things must come to an end, and so it is with no small amount of sadness that we bid farewell to our beloved Hayley Mills AKA Hayley Brando AKA the greatest child actor Disney ever had. THAT DARN CAT! was Hayley's last theatrical film for Disney, and to our hosts' delight they knocked it out of the park. There's great character actor faces, hilarious physical comedy, and even a fresh-faced Dean Jones brings his A-game in his first Disney role. Parting may be such sweet sorrow, but this movie definitely made it more sweet than bitter.
Our Minnie-D this week is a quick dive into the Disney+ vault, this time was THAT DARN CAT, the '60s Disney film starring Hayley Mills! Kevin Corcoran as younger son “Moochie”, and Tommy Kirk as the lead, “Wilby”. Wilby Daniels is an awkward teenage inventor that seems to be capable of financing his best friend “Buzz”’s romantic life, but has not been able to date himself. He wants to change this when he and Buzz both catch sight of their new French neighbor Francesca, - Francesca needs to go to the local museum, so Buzz and Wilby trip over themselves to take her. While at the museum, they split up, and Wilby runs into Dr. Plumcutt, a former customer on his paper route. Dr. Plumcutt tells Wilby all about the Borgia family, their sinister reputation, and their secret dog magic. Afterward, Wilby knocks over a display of antique jewelry, only to realize that he has stolen, ahem, “acquired” a Borgia ring and smuggled it out of the museum in the cuff of his pants. Wilby reads the inscription on the ring aloud and inadvertently turns himself into a dog - which happens to be identical to Francesca’s “Bratislavan sheepdog”, Chiffon. Wilby returns to Dr. Plumcutt at the museum, who takes talking to a dog in impressive stride, and basically is told there isn’t anything he can do except perhaps an act of bravery to break the curse. Wilby switches uncontrollably back and forth between dog and boy, and manages to cause mayhem at a dance and discover a spy ring trying to steal government secrets led by none other than Francesca’s adoptive father. Through another long series of events, and the police refusing to listen to the Daniels family about the spies, and Wilby, in dog form, steals Buzz’s car and leads the police to the harbor, where the spies are escaping with Francesca in tow. Wilby tries to board the boat himself to stop them, but Francesca is knocked into the water and dog-Wilby leaps into the water and drags her to safety, breaking the curse (although no one actually realizes it, and all credit is given to Chiffon). Wilby’s dog-hating father is also commended for his role in the discovery of the spy ring, and is photographed with Chiffon for the paper - for an article about Chiffon being given a medal for bravery. ● Trivia○ The initial release of The Shaggy Dog grossed more than $9 million on a budget of less than $1 million – an almost unprecedented return on a film investment, making it more profitable than Ben-Hur, released the same year.○ This movie has been remade a few times - a 1994 TV version featuring Scott Weinger and Ed Begley Jr, which kept the same general story intact, and the aforementioned 2006 horror movie version featuring Tim Allen○ “Shaggy” was actually an Old English Sheepdog named Sam - he was a pet, and was recommended for the role by his obedience trainer, William Koehler, who trained many animals for Disney movies, including The Incredible Journey, That Darn Cat, and The Ugly Dachshund.○ Sam was prepared for the car chase scene by using rubber bands to keep his hair out of his eyes and running him around in a wheel barrow, gradually increasing the intensity and speed as he got comfortable with the situation. A custom seat was made for Sam, with fur-covered “mittens” attached to the steering wheel, and a matching fur-covered seatbelt that blended in with his body.○ Some of the stunts, such as jumping off of the boat were done by a child or a little person in a sheepdog suit. (The child was Johnny Kirk, Tommy Kirk’s little brother)○ Sam accidentally stepped onto Tim Considine’s eye during filming, and scratched it.● Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”○ Not a real surprise, but Disney release windows are not expected to vary after the release of Disney+○ Disney released a TON of content that is going to be available on Disney+○ Maleficent: Mistress of Evil scheduled for release on October 18, 2019● Segment: Whosits and Whatsits Galore○ Disney Trivia● Segment: Top 4 Ranking “Let’s get down to business” ○ Top 4 Most Powerful Mages○ 1. Roger Barton has edited and worked on some of the most iconic films of a generation such as Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Titanic, World War Z, Terminator: Genesis, and the last five ‘Transformers’ films (this is just the ‘short’ list). He has lived many long days in the cutting room with directors such as James Cameron, Michael Bay, George Lucas, Joe Carnahan, and more. And that’s what this episode is all about today: “Living” in the cutting room and what that can do to your mental health, your physical health, your relationships, and your well-being. Roger is no stranger to burnout on the job, and in this interview he was extremely candid, open, and honest about how his exploding career as a young up-and-coming feature editor cost him dearly in his personal life as well as with his health. If you’re curious about what it’s really like working with the biggest directors on the biggest film imaginable, Roger gives you a peek inside his cutting room. Because of Roger’s love for both his craft but also his family, he spent years wondering if there was a better way to collaborate with directors & producers whereby he wouldn’t have to disappear for months at a time and sacrifice time with his family. And luckily for every editor around the world who has desperately wished and prayed for a technical solution that would allow you to work from home while not inhibiting the collaborative process, Roger has not only found the solution…he’s helping to build it and make it better. And that solution is Evercast. Guest Bio: Facebook|LinkedIn Roger Barton began working in editorial on documentaries and made-for-TV movies including the Emmy award-winning “Indictment: The McMartin Trial.” He soon made the transition to motion pictures and in 1997 was an Associate Editor on the decade’s biggest blockbuster, “Titanic.” He quickly moved up the ladder, honing his skills at Jerry Bruckheimer Films on “Armageddon” and “Gone in 60 Seconds.” Since then, Barton has worked with Michael Bay on “Pearl Harbor,” “Bad Boys 2,” the Platinum Dunes release, “Amityville Horror,” “The Island,” and the last five “Transformers” films. During his career, Roger has cut for Hollywood’s leading filmmakers such as George Lucas on “Star Wars: Episode III”, the Wachowski Brothers’ “Speed Racer”, Jim Sheridan’s “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” and two films for Director Joe Carnahan, “The Grey” and “The A-Team.” Beginning in 2013, Roger edited three films for Skydance Entertainment, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” “World War Z,” and “Terminator: Genesis.” In 2016 Roger returned to with Jerry Bruckheimer on “Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Men Tell No Tales,” after which he joined the team cutting “Transformers, The Last Knight” which is his ninth collaboration with Michael Bay. In the summer of 2017, Roger began editing “Godzilla: King of Monsters” for Legendary Pictures but left when he became Co-Founder of Evercast — a live streaming creative collaboration platform. As more and more productions shoot out of town, Evercast is becoming widely adopted by Hollywood because keeping filmmakers connected maintains creative momentum, saves time, money and removes the need to travel post-production crews around the world for months at a time. While Roger was pitching Evercast to the Hollywood Studios, he also helped John Krasinski turn his 17 million dollar genre thriller “A Quiet Place” into a 334 million summer blockbuster. With Evercast gaining momentum of its own, Roger has returned to his passion of editing and is currently cutting “Six-Underground”, the most expensive Netflix project to date being directed by Michael Bay and starring Ryan Reynolds. Time for a new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema, friends! This week, Josh and Scott are going it alone again as they return to the scene of a very dastardly crime. Last month, the crime was that of a defenseless woman being abducted by two nefarious bank robbers; this month, the crime is that of a defenseless woman being abducted by two nefarious...people whose identities are obscured. That's right, we're talking about the 1997 remake of That Darn Cat on this episode of the show, and both Josh and Scott are amazed at how different so much of the film is aside from the title and very basic premise. Sure, there's a teenager (Christina Ricci) and an FBI agent (Doug E. Doug), but the original film didn't have warring mechanics, two nagging parents, a pair of doofus security guards, a wig-wearing butcher, and references to the films of Budd Boetticher! How much can be attributed to the film's writers, who also wrote Ed Wood and last year's American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson? Is this film an improvement on the original? Is there a way for Josh to shoehorn in political references this week? Find out now!
Hey, folks! It's time for a brand-new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema, and for this one, Josh and Scott are heading back to the 1960s for a momentous occasion in Disney live-action history. This week, they're talking about the original That Darn Cat!, starring Hayley Mills in her final Disney role and Dean Jones in his first Disney role, as a smart young woman and straight-arrow FBI agent, respectively, both of whom get entangled in a kidnapping plot thanks to her...well, darn cat. Josh and Scott are joined by return guest Alan Scherstuhl of The Village Voice to talk about all things feline, the presentation of women 50 years ago in Disney films, and why it might have made sense for Disney to ever remake this in the first place. Check out the show now!
We return to the films of Antonio Margheriti and the decade of the 1970's to see what an Italian made Disney film would look like. You might remember the kind of film we're talking about if you are of a certain age -THAT DARN CAT, GUS, THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG, THE COMPUTER WORE TENNIS SHOES and certainly THE LOVE BUG which turned a cheap German made car into a fun loving childhood hero. Somehow. And when European producers wish to capitalize on the big budget hits of Hollywood they do the easiest thing possible to create a movie that the public will mistake for American fodder - they hire an American star! In this case, Dean Jones, lead actor in several Disney kiddie features was lured to Italy to make a film just as cute and stupid as the pabulum being force-fed to the little bastards by Uncle Walt's fantasy machine. How well it succeeds will be a test of your own nostalgia or, perhaps, your lack of patience with resolutely silly stories. John Hudson joins me to dig into this ridiculous science fiction comedy and as difficult a watch as it was for grown men, there are joys amide the pain. Not a lot of joys, but enough to keep us from losing our minds. We talk about the good cast, the odd choice of aspect ratio, the fantastic music, the Italian Peter Lorre, pointless animal testing and bizarre tropes that get trotted put in this genre of Saturday afternoon kiddie matinee. Of course, we also spend a sad amount of time lamenting the extremely short time the mythical Invisible Chimp is a part of the story. Clearly he was a highly paid ape and they could only afford him for a couple of days! As a bonus (?), I also take a minute to complain loudly about one of the dumbest turns of phrase/jokes/sad bits of non-humor from the past that is present in this film in the very first seconds. Sometimes I just have to get things off my chest even if it might make me sound like an old man screaming at clouds. Sorry. Thank you for downloading and listening to the show. Mr. Hudson and I plan to step up production of these Margheriti episodes this year and we even go so far as to announce the next two films we'll cover. We love going through these films and it is a blast see that there are others out there interested enough in his work to listen to us praise him. Join us over on The Bloody Pit Facebook page (which I forgot to mention in this show) or write us a review in iTunes or wherever you find our show. See you next time!

Tony V. Baughman (journalist, DJ, comedian and actor) is today's featured guest.
