All things considered, 2015's Mission Impossible Rogue Nation was a certified hit. Star Tom Cruise made a ditch effort to get writer/director Christopher McQuarrie back onboard to do another sequel in his tent pole franchise. After some convincing -and the casting of famously mustached Henry Cavill as the not so hidden villain- Mission Impossible Fallout was set to debut in 2018. And, like its predecessor, Fallout went on to be both a critical and financial hit. Listen to Garrett, Matt, and Adam talk about if the Dark Knight comparisons are warranted, as well as if Mission impossible Fallout is to blame -or credit- for the temporary downfall of the DC Cinematic Universe. Come back next week, as the guys look at 2023's Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1, and we have it out about the justification to call it Part 1.

As Joe would say... "It's a mildstone!" Episode 854 may not be a nice, round number - but it doesn't matter when the OG hosts from our first episode ever return! Dan Graney and Blake Fehl are back to join Kevin, Tom, and Joe for the reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe. Our first episode ever was Man of Steel (go find it and check out how far we've come) and with a new Superman movie out, we couldn't resist getting the band back together.Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-Co_BPPTXESupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/reelspoilers. James Gunn stewards a new DC Cinematic Universe with the hotly anticipated Superman. Starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, and Edi Gathegi, this new version of the Big Blue Boy Scout attempts to turn over a new leaf for a floundering franchise by taking pages from a rich tapestry of comics. Is it successful? We review the film, rank the silver screen Supermen, and talk about the future of DC at the movies.
This week on The First Run, Chris and Matt are joined by TFR theme composer Jamal Malachi Ford-Bey to discuss James Gunn's big swing with ‘Superman'. After the failed Snyder-verse, Warner Bros. attempts a lighter not so dour reboot for the DC Cinematic Universe. Does Gunn pull it off and deliver a rollicking adventure filled reset? Do Gunn at least ‘get' Superman? And most importantly, is Chris happy? Then there's the periwinkle-esque Kryponite (that is a real thing) that is the big releases on Physical Media, featuring the Streaming and Viper Video Picks of the Week. The final episode of June is awesome. Pun fully intended, as Lorenzo aka TeamAwesome418 rounds out this month and joins me while he was on vacation to record this episode! We're talking DC, Marvel, Cosplay, and more in this episode! We kick things off with the DC side of things. Lorenzo talks about how he got into DC through the animated shows and movies. We talked about his love of Superman, along with Batman, and Static Shock. We bounce around between the animated shows and movies, to some of the more recent movies and discuss the upcoming reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe. From there, we swing on over to Marvel. And if you got that swing reference, that's because we have a good conversation about Lorenzo's love of Spider-Man. Peter Parker (and Miles Morales too). Plus, we talk about the animated shows, the pre-MCU movies like Spider-Man and the X-Men franchise, and we don't forget about the MCU movies, and characters like Deadpool. Lorenzo also talks about how he first got into doing Cosplay and some of the characters he's represented, including Static Shock, Spider-Man, and Deadpool, to name a few. He talks about what he's working on for the future in the cosplay space. He also talks about how he's met a number of the actors from the Marvel MCU space, tells a few stories of some special meetings. Plus, we touch on books that Lorenzo has published, available on Amazon! What's up, Nerds??? This week on the podcast, we nerd it up as I sit down with returning guest Mike Leng to dive deep into the ever-evolving landscape of nerd culture. We kick things off with a discussion on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how its trajectory has shifted over the years before exploring James Gunn's vision for the DC Cinematic Universe and what it could mean for longtime fans. Our conversation then takes a nostalgic turn as we examine Star Wars and its heavy reliance on familiar elements—does it enhance the franchise or hold it back? From there, we journey into the intricate and immersive world of Warhammer 40K lore and the growing appeal of the franchise. We also geek out over Legos and Lord of the Rings, celebrating the creativity and enduring impact of these beloved franchises. Mike and I also tackle the topic of toxic fandoms, discussing how online communities can both uplift and tear down the things they claim to love. Finally, we reflect on the importance of passing down nerd culture to the next generation. How do we introduce kids to the things we love while avoiding the pitfalls of gatekeeping and toxicity? Whether you're a lifelong fan or just getting into nerd culture, this episode has something for everyone. An episode that commands your attention (pun intended). Here's what's in store for today's episode: * In today's episode, Matt and Angela explore the show Creature Commandos and discuss why sympathetic monsters can resonate with autistic individuals.* We delve into the history of the DC Cinematic Universe and examine the autistic coding in James Gunn's other projects, most notably Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad.* Creature Commandos, the first project of the DCU, follows a black ops team of monsters and sets the stage for Suicide Squad.* James Gunn is known for his intricate world-building—an aspect that closely aligns with the importance of world-building in autistic culture.* We explore the autistic coding of characters from The Suicide Squad, beginning with GI Robot—an autistic-coded machine with a monotropic focus on one thing: killing Nazis.* Our hosts dive into the history of the eccentric and iconic Bride of Frankenstein character, exploring her autistic-coded quirks.* Each monster in the show carries a notoriously tragic backstory, and none exhibit neurotypical social skills. They are shunned by society and dehumanized—just as autistic people often are in real life.* We discuss the autistic-coded traits of the show's villains—for example, Clayface, whose directness and behavior can be interpreted (or misinterpreted) as manipulation.* Matt and Angela talk about the future of the DC Universe and how Superman, with his strong sense of justice, is inherently autistic-coded.* James Gunn's work is profoundly autistic-coded, often emphasizing themes of belonging, justice, and the complexities of social interaction. His characters—many of whom are outsiders or misfits—reflect autistic traits like strong focus on specific values, difficulty navigating social norms, and being misunderstood by society. Gunn's storytelling unites these "outsiders," celebrating their differences and showing how their unique qualities make them crucial to the narrative.“That's the thing - we are often judged. We are often blamed. We are often criticized by people who don't understand us. And therefore, when we find an appealing monster, we really, really latch onto that.” - Matt“We [autistic people] are so dehumanized that we're robbed of basic human traits. People think that we don't have empathy. People don't think that we have theory of mind. People don't think that we are capable of making eye contact. And if we do have any of those, there's lots of people who believe that we can't be autistic because they believe that we have to be subhuman in some way. So this is a big reason why we relate to monsters, because we are treated as monsters. We are treated as something less.” - MattDid you catch all the Autistic-coded traits in Creature Commandos? In this first episode of 2024, we will discuss two films that have created a buzz amongst fans: one that ends the Snyderverse and the other that is the lowest grossing Marvel/MCU movie to date. We will discuss "superhero fatigue" and if Marvel is as fractured as people have been stating or of this is just the ebb and flow of the cinematic universe. We will briefly review "Echo" and the breath of fresh air it has given a struggling Cinematic Universe. We will also give our thoughts on the Zack Snyder's contribution to the DC Cinematic Universe as it comes to it's conclusion with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. “Hello, Hello - I'm at a place called Vertigo!”

You know what? It's been a minute since the last time we attempted to save the DC Cinematic Universe. That said, it's only been about three weeks since the last time we "made a series like Disney Plus's Loki." Well, for some reason, we've decided to recapture both of the aforementioned magics and save the DC Cinematic Universe with a series like Disney Plus's Loki! This week we're asking the simple question, "Which DC Villain should lead their own limited run series that isn't Peacemaker or Harley Quinn?" Andrew threw all of his creativity out the window for this episode and that's all we'll say about that. Matt speaks to the primal urge of man that is de-handling panhandles. We also finally gave Kyle the email log in so he can see the show notes! The title of this week's episode was selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community! Writer, Producer, Performer, Director, Choreographer, and DC Encyclopedia Mike Bowers (@bikemowers) floats gently to his seat from the high above rooftops for "Batman Returns" (1992). Starring: Michael Keaton (Birdman), Michelle Pfeiffer (What Lies Beneath), and Danny Devito (Twins). Dir: Tim Burton. We take you on a forced crash course (Penguin is driving. How can this be?) through a lot of the Burton/Schumacher Batman oeuvre. Discuss the Christmas movie of it all, and if this makes our holiday watchlist. The best of the "Batlips." How easy it should, or maybe shouldn't be, to tear off your bulletproof mask. And the missed magic of miniatures. Plot: While Batman deals with a deformed man calling himself the Penguin wreaking havoc across Gotham with the help of a cruel businessman, a female employee of the latter becomes the Catwoman with her own vendetta.Recorded 8/231hr 59minsExplicit language.Artwork - Ben McFaddenReview Review Intro/Outro Theme - Jamie Henwood"What Are We Watching" Theme - Matthew FosketProduced by - Ben McFadden & Paul RootConcept - Paul Root

[School of Movies 2023] This one was a long time coming. There's a solid argument to be made that to set the tone for the planned DC Cinematic Universe all the way back in 2012, around the time Avengers was doing gangbusters by brazenly copying the Marvel formula by building up the characters the general public don't know yet *before* throwing Superman and Batman at us again. But since Green Lantern was terrible in 2011 Warner Bros. clearly concluded they needed to establish a foundation of superheroes everybody knows *then* do a Justice League, THEN introduce us to those new superheroes in a way that feels more like a spinoff than a build-up. They did not have the faith that these costumed icons could carry a movie without Batman. So, accordingly this film that now seems to be closing out that first protracted attempt has (at least) two Batmans! Against expectations, considering the nightmare production, the lead actor's disturbing real life crime spree and the extremely muddled tone and story, I actually enjoyed this well-intentioned mess. Full spoilers of course, but I feel like everyone's level of enjoyment on this movie is going to be the same whether they know what's coming or not.
Today, Ali and Asif review a movie they saw together recently in an actual movie theatre –‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3' (2:52). They start off by discussing where we last left off with the Guardians in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They then discuss the original hiring of director James Gunn for the franchise several years ago and the controversy regarding his firing and rehiring by Marvel in 2018. They discuss how integral Gunn is to ‘Guardians' and how the character of Rocket (played by Bradley Cooper) is central to the storyline. They also discuss Gunn's future as the cinematic mastermind of future Superman movies and the DC Cinematic Universe as a whole. The guys then give their spoiler-free review of the movie and then discuss some plot points – SPOILERS for GOG Vol3 start at 21:48. Then the guys discuss artificial sweeteners (24:24). Asif starts off by discuss what artificial sweeteners are and the different types. Then Ali ask Asif about the recent WHO statement regarding how artificial sweeteners do not contribute to weight loss. Asif goes over the scientific evidence behind the WHO's position. He then discusses how artificial sweeteners have not convincingly be linked to cancer. The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. Director James Gunn, Director of "The Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise & the upcoming "Superman: Legacy," who has been one of the few constant bright spots in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has now been tasked by Warned Brothers to save the DC Cinematic Universe, will he be able to do it? And what will happen to the GOTG franchise in the process?
On this powerful episode of Sorry, We Tried, the guys delve deep into the insanity that broke out after Shazam 2's release. Zachary Levi and Dwayne Johnson are in the middle of a very public beef, and more information than ever before is coming out about how The Rock's ego killed two separate DC universes. You'll never believe the twists and turns as Shazam and Black Adam are finally getting to fight... except it's on Twitter and The Rock hasn't actually said anything about this stuff yet. Also in this episode, Harrison gives his Shazam 2 review. Spencer accidentally inhales some microphone fuzz. Robby gets more excited about an episode than he has in years. And the guys ponder the future of the DC Cinematic Universe in a post-Rock era.Website: sorrywetried.comMerch: bit.ly/swtmerchInstagram: @swtpodcastTwitter: @sorrywetriedEmail: thepodcastmen@gmail.comUse offer code "swtpodcast" for 20% off your order at bodbygod.netSupport the show
