Dunnnh dun. Dunnnh dun. Never before had two notes provoked such terror as they did in JAWS, the 1975 classic that invented the summer blockbuster, catapulted Steven Spielberg to Hollywood legend status, and inspired generational trauma about water. Actor and recognizable famous person Timothy Simons joins us to talk about this classic shark tale, and we go long on Scheider, Dreyfuss, Shaw, and the career of journeyman director Joseph Sargent (?). Which member of the Blank Check crew would be least likely to get attacked by a shark? Obviously Ben, because he respects water. What the hell did Chief Brody think he was gonna do when he apprehended the shark - arrest it? Why isn't Griffin familiar with the concept of a ferry? We dare to ask these questions, just as the citizens of Amity dared to go into the water. 2025! Blank Check Year 10! Year of Miracles! In honor of our record 10th year of podcasting, we're doing something we've never done before - going back to fill in the gaps on a filmography we've previously only partially covered. And what a filmography it is - folks, welcome to PODRASSIC CAST. We're starting our exploration of the first half of Steven Spielberg's career with his remarkable 1971 debut feature DUEL, a movie that was originally made for TV but later released with extra footage for a theatrical run. Is the film all logic brain and no beating heart? There is much discussion of Lanthimos' tone, and a great divide over whether Poor Things is good or not.  Also: what is the narrative of Farrell's career, what sound does a lobster make, and what animal is best to get turned into. We apologize in advance if you had a profound emotional experience with the new Robert Zemeckis joint - HERE felt like more of a “Here?? What???? Why?” to us. Dinosaurs, Benjamin Franklin's cuck son, a man dying from laughter, a horny couple who invent the LA-Z Boy, airplane man (who does NOT die from airplane), and the double whammy of the Black Lives Matter movement and Covid all come together to create a strange boomer diorama that misses much of the quotidian beauty of Richard McGuire's graphic novel. Will Bobby Z. ever make a good movie again? Griffin's not feeling bullish on the prospects. Just like the titular John, we didn't die at the end! We return from an entirely unplanned lengthy hiatus to (hopefully) get back to regularly scheduled programming with the cult horror/comedy John Dies at the End, which currently stands as the last feature directed by Phantasm creator Don Coscarelli.  The 2012 adaptation of Jason Pargin's webserial turned novel is schizophrenic, unfocused, difficult to describe, a testament to 20-something slacker culture of the early aughts, and also...kind of perfectly emulates the framework of an H.P. Lovecraft short story? Cheap looking at times and often losing something in its adaptation from print, John Dies at the End nevertheless still captures -- in its own peculiar way -- what it feels like to first experience that existential numbing that results from accepting that you have no control over your life. The gang places the film in the context of the AIDS epidemic, marvels at just how charming it is, raves about Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis' chemistry, and declares makeup effects artist Chris Walas to be one of the unsung heroes of ‘80s cinema. Plus, Kenn gives us a breakdown of the 20 (!) live events he's been to post-vaccine.   NEXT: all things must come to an end, and so Gobbledyween returns to the grave after one final performance. Listen to them, the children of the night. What movies they make! For the second installment of Gobbledyween 2021, A/V writer-director Joseph Lewis joins Paul and Arlo for a discussion of Clive Barker's 1990 film Nightbreed. Butchered by the studio on initial release and restored to its full grotesquerie decades later, Nightbreed is a bizarre fusion of epic fantasy, slasher, and supernatural horror. The gang discusses why that mix is so fascinating, why it's important that the monsters are the good guys, auteur David Cronenberg's turn as the evil Dr. Dekker, and the queer framework that gives the film extra resonance. Plus, as promised, Joe has some thoughts on The House of the Devil.   NEXT: speaking of that Cronenberg guy, Alex Jonestown Massacre guitarist Kenn Edwards helps us continue Gobbledyween with a discussion of 1986's The Fly.     BREAKDOWN 00:01:00  -  Intro / Joe's thoughts on The House of the Devil 00:24:30  -  Nightbreed 01:43:53  -  Closing shenanigans (The Box-Office Game?) 02:00:18  -  Outro / Next     LINKS   [Horror Queers] The Inherent Queerness of Clive Barker's Nightbreed by Trace Thurman, Bloody Disgusting Nightbreed: The Enduring Appeal of a Horror Classic by Marc Buxton, Den of Geek The Monsters of Midian by Duncan Ralston, duncanralston.com Mac Tonight Compilation (video) Joe's Letterboxd Gobbledyween List     MUSIC “Blessed Are You” by Iced Earth, Something Wicked This Way Comes (1998) “Johnny Get Angry” by Anne Bobby, Nightbreed Soundtrack (1990) “Berserker” by Love Among Freaks, Clerks (Music from the Motion Picture) (1994)     GOBBLEDYCARES National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/  Support AAPI communities and those affected by anti-Asian violence: https://www.gofundme.com/c/act/stop-aapi-hate Support the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund: https://aapifund.org/ Support Black Lives Matter and find anti-racism resources: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ Advocate for writers who might be owed money due to discontinuance of royalties: https://www.writersmustbepaid.org/  Help teachers and classrooms in need: https://www.donorschoose.org/ Do your part to remove the burden of medical debt for individuals, families, and veterans: https://ripmedicaldebt.org/ Register to vote: https://vote.gov/

Hey, friends! We hope you're prepared to go out on the high seas for some big adventure, because that's where we're headed this week on a brand-new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema. Scott and Josh are headed back to a film most piratical as they revisit the 1996 comedy Muppet Treasure Island, featuring the Muppets, Tim Curry, and more in this take on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Your hosts are joined by longtime friend of the show and Seven-Timers' Club inductee Griffin Newman for an exciting, unexpectedly contentious conversation about this film and all of its intricacies. Is Muppet Treasure Island one of the great Muppet films, or just a mildly charming one? Is the music worth its salt? Are the Muppets used well? And how did this movie fare in the box office? You'll want to stick around to find out the answer to that last question, because boy, do we have a doozy of a Box Office Game. Check out the new show now!

Hey, folks! It's time to suit up for a brand-new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema, and this one is a corker. This week, even though it's summer time, Scott and Josh are headed back to school. To a superheroic school, that is: they're discussing the 2005 superhero comedy Sky High on the show this week, with a bona fide superhero himself! They're joined by longtime friend of the show Griffin Newman of Amazon's The Tick to talk about how Sky High stands out amidst the epic-size Marvel Cinematic Universe and other self-serious superhero films of the 2010s. Does Sky High still hold up in spite of being a bit goofy and low-rent? Is the quirkier film at the periphery better than the actual story? And can Griffin ace a special Box Office Game (for all you Blank Check fans)? You'll have to listen to find out!
