It's finally time for Andrea to make good on her #20for20 promise to make a dessert that tastes as good as the raw cake batter from Episode 122! First stop: the scientists, who say cake batter flavor is a combination of vanilla, nuts and butter. Andrea started trying Funfetti cake batter dips (thanks to listener Miranda!) but found them too 'cream-cheesy' and not fluffy enough. It wasn't until she was making Nigella's No Churn Coffee Ice Cream that she realized it had the texture she wanted. A quick search of the Internet turned up a No Churn Cake Birthday Cake Ice Cream from America's Test Kitchen, always a trusted source. Did this ice cream fulfill Andrea's quest to safely indulge in raw cake batter? Listen to find out! You can read the full show notes here. Stefin’s fresh off a "Perfect Pavlova" Zoom class with chef Skye McAlpine, author of A Table in Venice and A Table for Friends, recently released on July 9. Both hosts enjoyed the make-ahead no-bake Salted Caramel and Pecan Cheesecake Pots from Olive magazine, although Andrea found her ingredient splurges made the overall dessert cost a bit too high, and Stefin wished for a more cheesecake-y flavor. This week's bake along is the retro classic No-Bake Grasshopper Pie from The Spruce Eats. Crème de menthe at the ready! Reorganizing your pantry this summer? Be sure to check expiration dates and donate any still-fresh dry goods to your local food bank or Little Free Pantry. Both hosts agree that Dorie Sanders' No-Churn Fresh Lemon Ice Cream will be in heavy rotation this summer, but how about the Candied Sesame Seeds? Stefin and Andrea were blown away by the recent virtual Preheated Bake Along spearheaded by Listeners Jesse and Rebecca in late March. From cranberry banana bread to “ugly cake,” with stops in Florida for strawberry jalapeño jam, fennel crackers in London, and first-time croissants, our Listeners worldwide had a great time sharing their original bakes. Though this is the first official month devoted to desserts made with tangy dairy, the Preheated hosts have been baking with buttermilk, sour cream, cream cheese and crème fraîche since Episode 1, but have never baked with the milk kefir featured in the Chocolate Chai Kefir Cake from Olive Magazine. Sadly, though both are fans of warming chai spices, as well as chocolate cake, they felt the flavor combo did not work. Hopefully, this week’s bake along, the Lemon Sour Cream Pie from Tastes Better from Scratch will be a creamy, cheerful delight. Finally, in an ongoing feature on how to make some of this month’s featured dairy ingredients in your own kitchen, the duo describe making homemade crème fraîche, buttermilk and sour cream. Listeners, our thoughts are with you and your families and loved ones. We hope our show provides a bit of respite when you need it most. Be well, and thanks for listening! But first, Stefin’s got a #20for20 baking resolution update from Bread Ahead, and Andrea reminds listeners of the Quarantine Baking resources available on preheatedpodcast.com.
