Despite a few travel hiccups, she had an enjoyable experience flying Turkish Airlines and Polaris on the return. Hotels were mostly booked with cash via OTAs, with some offset using Capital One travel credits. Angie and her travel companion rented a car for their road trip, visiting Lake Bled, the Julian Alps, and iconic caves like Postojna, before crossing into Italy and heading down the Istrian coast into Croatia. Highlights included truffle tasting tours, the Roman ruins in Pula, and the stunning Plitvice Lakes. Angie strongly recommends Slovenia for its beauty, affordability, and mild summer weather. We just couldn't believe how beautiful it was.  The turquoise colour of the water, the gorgeous green trees, the snow capped mountains, the wooden boats, the boardwalks – just everything.  We will give you advice about the best things to do and where to go, the best day trips and also where to stay –There is one experience that everyone does, but really is a bit overrated and you can totally miss if you are short on time.  Then, omg, if you think Lake Bled is stunning – then you wait to you hear about our visit to Vintgar Gorge. This is a 1.6km wooden boardwalk that clings to the edge of 50 to 100m sheer cliffs and takes you over the rapids and water holes all the way to the biggest waterfall in Slovenia.  I have to say this is one of my favourite things that I have ever done. I'm trying not to exaggerate – but it was absolutely incredible. It's an intuitive, encompassing experience supported by training logs and programmes that's are easy to use, fun and immersive.   Alfred takes us through the genesis and evolution of EXR and explains the rationale behind EXR - wanting to make people row more together. Being Broken Oars we ask why Belgium - a flat country with lots of rivers tends to produce cyclists rather than rowers (culture, apparently ... ), before deep diving into why EXR is the leading app for rowers, indoor rowers and gym-goers who want to expand their training experience, get fit and have fun doing it.   Being tech nerds (well, the Southern One is. He's designed a widget, you know ... ) we talk about the difficulties of synching up the power output measurements of the world's varied rowing machines to the virtual representations of your stroke (power meters, PM5's, cables and bluetooth interruptions ... ), and look at where EXR might go next given it's an app that appears designed for clubs and crews who want to train on the water they'll be competing on - whether that's Head of the River, Henley or the latest Olympic or World Championships course.   This leads us into a chat about things as varied as real time stroke rate readouts for boats you compete against in EXR, special Henley Week maps, the ability to compete in real time against boats on the Henley reach as the events unfold, crew races, seat racing matrices ... and the elephant in the room: making sure that cheats can't 'game the game' by dropping their weight to take advantage of weight-adjusted split outputs.   And oh yeah, we've said the best to last:   With Christmas coming, and land training ramping up even as we start thinking about New Year Resolutions we've wangled a discount for anyone wanting to give the app a spin. Trust us, it's as easy as logging in and sitting on your rowing machine. So give it a go, go to EXR and use the code BROKENOARS for 10% off your subscription.   Full crew, from backstops. Joining Hassan in the podcast studio this week are a number of the Nash Tackle team who stared in the latest The Social 4 Lake Bled video, available to watch now on NashTV.It's fair to say the team smashed it on all fronts, with all the anglers and videographers on the shoot catching carp over the 40lb mark, topped by a 60lb+ mirror caught by Max Hendry. The video was shot with each pair of anglers having their own videographer to record the goings on over the course of the week. Overall the video was compiled and edited by videographer Barnaby Bos who speaks about the process of putting it all together and how he is now leaving Nash for a life in Switzerland fly fishing.Sam Barron and Bradley Chambers for the videography team also speak about the process of filming the events during a high paced, fish filled shoot on a days only mega lake.Dan Yeomans, Tom Forman, Henry Lennon, Alfie Willingale, Max Hendry and Oli Davies all discuss their angling on "the greatest" park lake in the world and what changes in tactics and bait led to their success. If you are heading to Lake Bled or looking for some humour and inspiration enjoy this unedited podcast.

This week joining Hassan in the podcast studio is our very own  newly crowned Mr B.C (Big Carp) Henry Lennon. In this episode Henry talks in depth about his incredible year. Henry has committed to fishing more this year both domestically and abroad as part of his work for Nash Tackle and in his own time also. He has balanced a very busy job as well as booking in trips to various big fish venues across Europe where he has seriously made the most of his opportunities in terms of caching big carp.He shares his domestic success in the shape of him "guesting" on a reservoir which saw him land some incredible uncaught carp before (in a hilarious classic Henry manner) his fishing was cut short. He goes on to talks about his foreign success on venues such as Lake Bled,  France, Belgium and cumulating in his capturing the Spanish Record Carp on a recent trip with Samir at over 70lbs+Its fair to say that the boy has had a landmark carp fishing year by even the very highest of standards. Sit back, listen and let's hope a bit of Lennon luck comes your way in the coming year.

Welcome to this special episode of Feel Slovenia the Podcast celebrating World Bee Day. May 20 is a day dedicated to celebrating the wonders of the bee, an absolutely critical animal to the planet's ecosystem. Without bees, our flora could not exist—three-quarters of all food crops depend on pollination—and so the bees need to get the credit they deserve. For this reason, the United Nations declared World Bee Day in December 2017 —  and this was originally a Slovenian initiative. Slovenes have the most beekeepers per capita in the world, and we'll hear from several of them in today's episode. My guests include Lucie Grace, a British journalist who visited Slovenia to write a feature on its apiculture traditions. Mateja Reš runs the Garden of Tastes, a homestead garden near idyllic Lake Bled where she grows all manner of produce and leads workshops on cooking, gardening and more, all happily supported by bees. Dr Peter Kozmus is one of Slovenia's leading beekeepers, and leads the breeding program for the Carniolan Gray Honey Bee as part of the Slovenian Beekeeper's Association. He gives talks around the world and authored the books Beekeeping for Everyone and Bumble Bees in Slovenia. And Gorazd Trušnovec, who was the first urban beekeeper in Slovenia, and now oversees hives at 12 locations on the roofs of buildings in Ljubljana. Let's take a look at what all the buzz is about! For more inspiration, check out the following bee-related contents:Honey for sweet moments and well-beingLuxuriating in Slovenian HoneyMouth-watering honey biscuits with Slovenian honeyMy way of honey indulgenceCelebrate World Bee Day with us

Let's get the history out of the way. The country became independent from Yugoslavia in 1992.Ljubljana, Slovenia may be unknown to many people, but if you have been there, you will know that it is a very enjoyable place to visit for a few days, especially the Old Town.Aside from the city's "hard to pronounce" name, it is full of pleasant surprises. Spotlessly clean, very safe, welcoming, and lots of character are good assets. Personally, I felt quite chilled out there.Enjoy St. Nicholas' Cathedral and the Medieval Castle. Take a day trip to Lake Bled for spectacular scenery. My stay at the boutique Vander Urbani Hotel in the Old Town was excellent. There are cafes and restaurants everywhere, so you will be spoiled for lunch and dinner. Slovenia even makes its own wine, which is surprisingly good.Above all, it is just very pleasant and safe to walk around the cobble stone streets, so enjoy the vibe.Would I go back there? Absolutely.

The Nostalgic Vagabond is a fan of serendipity. If open to it, a traveller can accidentally discover something good. And friendship can often be that good thing.   Allan Zooms-in to London to check in with good friend, Jade Nicholson-Lamb. In 2017, Jade and Allan bumped into each other randomly, twice, in one of the most beautiful places in the world - Lake Bled, in Slovenia. In just a day or two, a strong connection can be created. This often happens on the traveller's trail but once back home, back to the routine of normal life, these friendships can sometimes fall away. Not the case here...   Jade shares a refreshing and honest perspective on solo travelling for a female in her early twenties from her experiences Inter-Railing in Europe. She also talks about her six-month Central American adventure in 2018 where she continued to develop, grow in confidence, learned to really live, and figure out who the woman is that she wants to be. Jade has an interesting take on what it means to be an ethical and responsible traveller too.   Jade tells of her recent summer vacation in Greece. She explains what it was like to travel during these Covid-19 times. Just note that the observations and experiences were accurate at the time of recording and due to the nature of this global pandemic, any trip in the future may be different.      A comments section is not available for this podcast. If most of your social media is wild swimming connected, chances are you already follow this week's podcast guest, James 'Jumpy' Kirby. James chronicles his swims, both photographically and in terms of key data. When I bumped into him back in February 2019 at Millerground in Cumbria after a swim, I recognised him instantly from Facebook! It was such a joy to finally meet up with him properly in October 2019, to swim together at Colwith Force and then to record a podcast with him. He is a real adventurer. Heading out, up into the hills, ice axe packed, looking for frozen tarns to swim in. Or on warmer days, hiking 39km and doing 14 dips along the way! I think what I enjoyed most of all about meeting him, was how easy it was to chat and laugh about wild swimming. Strangers quickly become friends, and anytime I've over in the lake District from now on I'll be calling on James to come swim with me. This is the last episode of 2019. I'll be back in 2020 with new guests, and an exciting sponsor who I cannot wait to collaborate with! Have an awesome December everyone. One of my own personal challenges is becoming well documented through this podcast and that is learning front crawl. I was never taught as a child. I always favoured breast stroke – strictly the heads up type. It wasn’t until I did an introduction to open water swimming session with Swim the Lakes that I got some pointers about body position, and how putting my head in the water and pushing my chest down might help, especially while wearing a wetsuit with the extra buoyancy it gives you! In talking to Pete from Swim the Lakes for this episode of the podcast I’m reminded of how far I’ve come from being a complete newbie five years ago. I’ve now got a fairly quick breast stroke that can carry me nearly 2km. But I know I can go further by switching stroke, and I can stay swimming in skins by being faster and therefore not in the water for as long. I love skins. As Pete says, it is swimming at its most sensuous. But switching stroke has been like going back to childhood. I’m barely a step up from wearing armbands! Not doing much better than the four year olds in the lane next to me. I’ve had about 6 lessons so far, and this weekend I finally completed one whole length of something approaching front crawl. It’s slow progress, and could be demoralising. But I’m thriving. It’s a buzz learning something genuinely new. An interesting thing that Pete said during his interview is that we make a quantum leap as a human being by challenging ourselves. Beyond learning front crawl, I’ve also recently challenged myself by entering next year’s winter swimming championships at Lake Bled in Slovenia. I’ll be doing 25m, 50m and 100m breast stroke (I can’t imagine getting my head under to do freestyle). The biggest challenge I believe will be swimming without neoprene socks and gloves on, so I’ve started my acclimatisation early. In the North Sea at the weekend I went in with only swimsuit, hat and goggles, with the concession of a big bobble hat to give me comfort as first my feet and then my hands screamed in agony. Once the screaming stopped I made a quantum leap. I realised that I’ll be ok. I’m tough. And brave. And determined. And beyond excited! I’ll always be grateful to Swim the Lakes for setting me off on the right track as I started my wild swimming adventure. I still have no idea where it’s going to end, or where it’s going to take me. Things we talk about Swim the Lakes, Troutbeck, Rydal water, Save Grange Lido, Wim Hoff method, Birtley pool, Blackmoss Pot, Loughrigg Tarn, Grasmere, Crummock water, Wastwater, Great North Swim

This week’s guest said so many things that either resonated with me or surprised me I don’t know where to begin. The one that grabbed the podcast episode title, was when Suzanna realised she “could get the top of the mountain feeling in the middle of a lake”. I’ve been at the top of mountains, Kilimanjaro being the highest, and I knew exactly what she meant. For me it is a mix of achievement, peace, isolation, daring, adventure, (often) cold, challenge, environment and conditions which create that feeling. She talked about what can happen when plans change. Suzanna Swims appears to have risen like a phoenix out of not completing her Mountain Leader qualification, losing her dad, and to an extent her identity. What was a devastating and life changing period became the foundation for a job and way of life that now brings her joy. She mentions a friend called Jude, who provided a bridge into wild swimming - something she says she needed in her life but never realised it, until she was regularly leaving the house before 6am to swim in the lakes. How many of us have a Jude in our wild swimming story? Someone who helped us to get in, to move on and to grow? She also talks about the water in the different lakes in Cumbria feeling different on the skin. I’ve never even thought of this before, but will certainly be even more mindful the next time I get the opportunity to compare. And finally, while I will persist in my efforts to learn front crawl, Suzanna validated breaststroke as a credible stroke for long distance open water swimming in skins and made me question my own strategies for going faster and further. It was an absolute gift being able to interview her. And because of her I’m signing up for the Winter Swimming World Championships at Lake Bled, Slovenia next year! Go me. Things we talked about Crummock Water, Coniston, Jelly Babies, Suzanna Swims, Walking Women, Buttermere, Windermere, Bassenthwaite, Poland, Borrowdale, Barefoot shoes, Derwentwater, Wastwater, Scottish Winter Swimming Championships, Estonia Look closely and you'll see the island we swam to.

Have you ever seen a photo so beautiful, you thought, “I’m going here.” I feel that way about Lake Bled in Slovenia, which is one of the six former socialist republics of Yugoslavia.   This summer I traveled through a few of those other countries: Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, and Montegro, but I ran out of time to see Slovenia. Now I’m kicking myself because, increasingly, stunning photos of this hidden gem are cropping up everywhere. That’s it. In 2018, I’m making a trip happen! So I called up Slovenian expert Noah Charney for a little background research.    Noah is an American writer and art history professor who has lived in Slovenia since 2006. He’s written several books, including The Art Thief, which was an international success. Most recently, he wrote Slovenology: Living and Traveling in the World’s Best Country.    In this episode, we chat about Noah’s life in Slovenia, and come up with some great ideas on what to eat, drink, and do when traveling through its capital, Ljubljana, and Beyond.    If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe and forward this show to a friend. If you’re feeling especially kind, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts.
