The news about the deaths of two Meadowcreek High School students this week has left the school's community reeling as it mourns the teens. First came the news that the remains found off State Route 316 this week belonged to Susana Morales, 16, who had been missing since last summer. Then came the news that another student who had recently gone missing, Rodrigo Floriano Mayen, 17, was recently found dead from an overdose. Police said on Friday that the deaths are not related to one another. The deaths prompted Meadowcreek Principal Kevin Wood to send a letter to parents on Thursday. According to Gwinnett's local health department, GNR Public Health, the Georgia 9-1-1 Medical Amnesty Act is designed to encourage people to seek help in the event of an overdose by providing “limited immunity from arrest, charge and prosecution for possession of certain drugs and drug paraphernalia for individuals who experience a drug overdose and are in need of medical care and for those who seek medical care in good faith for a person experiencing an overdose.” Wood told Meadowcreek parents that counselors and social workers are being made available to students and staff members who need to talk to someone as they grieve the deaths of Morales and Mayen. Duluth police have arrested a man, who has been described as a “witch doctor,” on charges that he allegedly raped a woman who went to him for a cleansing ritual last weekend. Hassan Shalgheen, 44, met the victim through social media and set up a meeting for a cleansing at his apartment. On February 5, the victim contacted police, however, and told them that, rather than receiving a cleansing, she had been assaulted instead. Shalgheen was arrested on February 6 and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail. He has been charged with rape, sexual battery, false imprisonment and theft by deception. Police are now looking to see if there are other women who have also been victims. Anyone who has been a victim, or has additional information about the case, is asked to call the detective handling the case. In commemorating National School Counseling Week, Gwinnett County Public Schools held an awards program on Feb. 7 to recognize its top counseling award winners for 2023. Those honored included Dr. Natalie Pugh of Gwin Oaks Elementary School, Jameela Hall of Lilburn Middle School and Dr. Cedric Cooks of Norcross High School. In addition, Dr. Eric Davidson, principal at Duluth High School was recognized as the Mary Joe Hannaford Counselor Administrator of the Year Award. At the awards program, the school district also honored Duluth High School as a 2022 Recognized ASCA Model Program recipient. There are 34 counseling departments in the school system that are recipients of the RAMP National Award, which is awarded by the American School Counselor Association and recognizes schools that have established comprehensive data-driven counseling programs. This marks the second time Duluth High School has received RAMP recognition. A list of those honored can be found at Gwinnett Daily Post dot com. Gov. Brian Kemp announced on Wednesday that he has picked two members of Gwinnett County's legislative delegation to serve on a joint committee that provides legislative oversight for MARTA. State Senator Gloria Butler of Stone Mountain, and Representative Scott Hilton of Peachtree Corners, were among six legislators that Kemp appointed to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Overview Committee, also known as MARTOC. While MARTA has its own board of directors, made up of members from counties that participate in the transit system, MARTOC is a joint House and Senate committee that serves a statutory role to provide oversight for MARTA, particularly in budgetary matters. Although Hilton and Butler do represent districts that include parts of Gwinnett, their districts also include portions of counties which participate in MARTA. In Hilton's case, that is a portion of Fulton County. In Butler's case, it is a part of DeKalb County. Duluth recently announced its 2023 event schedule which features many favorites the city is known for in addition to a concert by A1A: The Original Jimmy Buffett tribute band and the return of Viva Las Duluth. The city's event season kicks off in March with the Duluth Farmers & Artisan Market. In addition to shopping with local vendors on the second and fourth Sunday of every month through November, each market features live music. Among the highlights: Flicks on the Bricks returns with a free movie under the stars on August 4 and 18. Fridays-N-Duluth (FND) kicks off May 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Downtown Duluth and runs through the end of July. FND will feature live music, food trucks and vendors. Themed nights will return on Fridays that fall on an even date. Themes will include Dog Days of Summer, Pride, Kick-Off to the Fourth, Whimsical Wonderland and International Night. The Lantern Parade will be included in International Night on July 28. City officials said signature events such as Back-to-School Bubblepalooza, Howl on the Green, Deck the Hall and Cookies & Cocoa with Santa will all be back for 2023. A1A will headline the Summer Stage Concert on August 12. Night at the Red Clay (formerly Cinema at the Red Clay) will continue in 2023 with an added twist — in addition to movie nights, there will be free concerts and comedy shows at the Red Clay Music Foundry. A plane that was damaged as it was forced to make an emergency landing on Interstate 985 last month did so because it had lost all power on its way back to Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville, according to report from federal investigators. The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report into the Jan. 24 incident near Buford and Sugar Hill shows the Piper PA-28-140 airplane had been on a instructional flight when it experienced trouble. It's landing on the interstate shut down I-985 for hours during rush hour traffic. The instructor was able to confirm that the plane's throttle was full forward and that its fuel air mixture was full rich after the plane lost power, but they were too far out from Briscoe Field, where they had taken off from, to make it back safely. The plane was damaged during the attempted emergency landing. It clipped a truck before landing and the landing gear under the nose collapsed during the landing as well. There was other damage that was also listed in the report. Despite the damage to the plane, the flight instructor and the student pilot were not injured during the landing. Fly fishing, historian Mark Kurlansky has found, is a battle of wits, fly fisher vs. fish–and the fly fisher does not always (or often) win. The targets–salmon, trout, and char; and for some, bass, tarpon, tuna, bonefish, and even marlin–are highly intelligent, wily, strong, and athletic animals. The allure, Kurlansky learns, is that fly fishing makes catching a fish as difficult as possible. There is an art, too, in the crafting of flies. Beautiful and intricate, some are made with more than two dozen pieces of feather and fur from a wide range of animals. The cast as well is a matter of grace and rhythm, with different casts and rods yielding varying results. Kurlansky joined us to share this and other insights he has learned from a lifetime of loving fly fishing, collected in his book The Unreasonable Virtue of Fly Fishing. Known for his micro-histories, deep dives into specific subjects, he married that reputation with a subject that has captivated him for decades. Combining history, craft, and personal memoir, he invited us all, devotees of the sport or not, to explore the necessity of experiencing nature’s balm first-hand. Mark Kurlansky is the New York Times bestselling author of Cod, Salt, Paper, The Basque History of the World, 1968, The Big Oyster, International Night, The Eastern Stars, A Continent of Islands, and The White Man in the Tree and Other Stories. He spent ten years as Caribbean correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. Buy the Book: https://www.thirdplacebooks.com/book/9781635573077 Presented by Town Hall Seattle. Hey listeners. Tom here. I LOVE this episode! We talk to John Wang who is the founder of the Queens International Night Market. John is an ex-corporate lawyer who, after traveling around the world, woke up one morning and decided that he would make a night market happen in Queens. After 2 failed Kickstarters, and a lot of red-tape, he achieved his goal. What I LOVE about John and his story is that he had a vision- to bring an AFFORDABLE, authentic, and socially conscious market to NYC- and he stuck to that vision. He is dedicated (sometimes not sleeping for 28-30 hours on weekends), passionate, and driven. If you love food, business, entrepreneurship, and passion, please give this one a listen.
Stefin has a delicious update from International Night, and, in keeping with Bon Bon & Bars month, introduces listeners to the Brazillian "national candy," brigadeiros. Andrea's wondering if she's up to the challenge of a classic Yule Log, and both hosts discuss holiday desserts they've never eaten. Both also loved the easy and quick (!) Homemade English Toffee (introduced in Episode 55) and have now made it several times, while contemplating a commercial candy venture. Next up are Gingerbread Cookie Bars from The Laughing Spatula, reminiscent of Andrea's Christmas Cookie Challenge in Episode 6. Finally, the duo discuss favorite kitchen gifts they've received over the years, including Kitchen Aid mixers, Cuisnarts, double-sided measuring spoons, food scales, French rolling pins and cookie jars.Bake along with Stefin and Andrea in their baking Facebook group, Preheated. Andrea and Stefin are in the holiday mood as they kick off a festive month of Bon Bons & Bars with Blizzard Blondies -- pretty, easy and delicious! Stefin's trying to stay warm during the UK's "arctic blast," is looking forward to Nigella Lawson's first Christmas special since 2008, and is trying to determine how many apple slab pies to contribute to the USA table at her daugther's International Night. Fortunately, Big Batch Baker (BBB) Andrea has plenty of advice. Over in the Gadget Garage, Andrea recently turned to the Preheated Facebook community for help identifying a mysterious kitchen implement -- a flat whisk! -- while Stefin muses over the helpfulness of "one-off" kitchen gadgets. (Andrea's got a favorite.) Andrea's also looking forward to her annual holiday cooking decorating weekend and has several tips for listeners planning their own. Finally, Stefin answers the burning question: "What's the Christmas cookie scene like in London?" and the duo discuss Preheated fans' favorite Christmas cookies.Bake along with Stefin and Andrea in their baking Facebook group, Preheated. Episode 026- As we're knee deep into grilling season, you've probably run through your tried and true favorite ways to serve grilled meat. Today, I will offer six suggestions of sauces and relishes that will bring moisture, taste, and accentuate the flavors that come with grilled meats. Normally, I studiously avoid discussing grilling (and barbecuing for that matter) because it seems that when most people talk about "guys and food", they go straight to grilling and barbecuing. I try to cover the other aspects of guys and food but here we are in the middle of July and, if we're talking about cooking during this time of year, it simply can't be avoided. For the purposes of clarification, this show we are not going to talk about barbecuing, low and slow cooking indirectly usually over coals or wood. That is a totally different discipline and the topic of another program. When I talk about grilling, I mean cooking over a high heat, directly from the bottom of the grill with the cover off. If you're thinking of trying something different, here are a few things that you can make and have at the ready to help make your grilled meat or fish something to remember. Mumbo Sauce- This is a sauce that is popular around the Baltimore and Washington D.C. area. I had never heard of it, but saw reference to it on Facebook. When I asked what it was and an old Marine Corps pal set me straight. He said it was just ketchup and hot sauce mixed together. I've mixed up ketchup and hot sauce plenty of times and I even bought a bottle of Heinz ketchup with Tabasco. Upon further inspection, it is something a little bit more than that. I have not cooked this recipe, but here is a version from Epicurious and it seems straight forward. Pesto- With pesto you get a sauce that uses up the fresh basil in your garden. You can store it in the fridge or freeze it to use during the wintertime. Since pignoli nuts (also known as pine nuts) can be super expensive, consider using chopped walnuts as a substitute. If you omit the nuts altogether and you can call it pistou which is the french version of the sauce. This garlicky sauce is great on beef or fish but equally good in pasta or potato salad. The recipe I use is from Fabio Viviani's cookbook, "Fabio's Italian Kitchen." Chimichurri- This Argentinian sauce, so you know it goes well with beef! It's like pistou but made with fresh parsley and oregano instead of basil. There are many different ways to make this. I've seen recipes that include cilantro and cumin and many other herbs and spices. The recipe that I have is from "Fire in My Belly: Real Cooking" by Kevin Gillespie and David Joachim. This is straight forward with the exception of esplette pepper which is described in the book as "hotter than paprika and milder than cayenne, and more aromatic than both. " So use either depending on your heat tolerance. Red Onion Marmalade (also known as a onion confit)- What is great about this is that it adds the onion flavor but also sweet and sour taste that counter balances the char that comes with grilled meat. You'll recall in Episode 022, the burger episode, it was recommended as an an accompaniment to a burger but works well with any meat. It is also good on grilled cheese sandwiches. The recipe that I use come from "The Joy of Cooking" and stays for about a month in your fridge. Fresh Mint Chutney- If you have mint in your garden, you know how quickly it can take over. Here is a recipe that will help you use up that mint, and take your fish or lamb to a higher level. This recipe is also from "The Joy of Cooking". Caponata- This is the chunky sweet and sour eggplant relish of my youth! Along with the eggplant, it's got celery, raisins, pignoli, tomatoes, capers and olives. This recipe has anchovies in it too. Do not omit them. Be a man, not a mouse! It adds a depth to the flavor and you won't even be able to sense that it is anchovies. The recipe that I use most often is from "The Frugal Gourmet Cooks Italian" which Epicurious has on its website. Two non alcoholic drinks to enjoy during the summertime: Switchel- Also known as "Old Haymaker's Punch", this is a drink that was the thirst quencher in colonial times before soda or Gatorade. This recipe is from "The Old Farmer's Almanac" and includes water, molasses, fresh ginger, and apple cider vinegar. Hurricane Punch- There is certainly an alcoholic version of this drink that you know about if you spent three minutes in New Orleans. However, I came across this non-alcoholic version recently when I was reading "International Night" by Mark and Talia Kurlansky. It is a delightful combination of citrus juices, ginger ale, and water.
