We can all have those racing thoughts and going-nowhere ideas, but when you're a solo artist, hiding away in your studio space, who do you turn to? Who do you share and bounce ideas off? Sometimes it takes a friend, accountability partner or mentor to hold a mirror up to us to realise just how much we're capable of. Are you part of a mastermind group, do you love your mentor? Who's championing you? Finding someone or something that works can be as easy as asking. @karengeorgeart and @gaynorljart have experienced the different support networks and share what's working for them right now. It can feel very lonely when we don't experience love. A sense of abandonment. To know that ‘I am loved' is like the permanent embrace of presence. To be loved and know it deeply is, I think, the quest of every heart. According to early Church writer Paul, it is the greatest of all. When you know you're loved, there is a sense you are held and known. There is a completeness to who you are. But, in all honesty, the love most of us have experienced is like store-bought tomatoes. These tomatoes are seemingly perfect. Round, red, and full of juice. They may even have a label to make sure you know that it's a tomato. We buy them, use them, feel we know what a tomato is like and all is well in our tomato world. I never buy shop tomatoes because once you've tasted a REAL TOMATO you'll never go back. What I mean by a real tomato is one that has been grown in soil, under the heat of the sun, fed with organic fertilisers and simply allowed to grow at its own pace. I simply can't explain the difference, but I will try. The flavours are powerful and strong. There isn't much juice because it's all flesh. They are beautiful to look at and watch as they ripen. I regularly give away some of my tomatoes. I ask people to enjoy the difference. To slowly, even mindfully, eat the tomato. Why am I talking about tomatoes? What's the connection to love? Love Tasting We all have had tastings of love. It might be a romantic relationship. Perhaps the love of a parent to a child and a child to a parent. Grandparents holding the newborn grandchild. Nothing sweeter. Or it could be the love of a dog to its owner. Maybe cats, but I'm not sure

This morning prayer invites you to delight in your human existence and to freely call out for divine assistance. It is based on a Tibetan Buddhist daily practice called "Nectar of the Path" taught by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. It includes The Four Thoughts, Refuge & Bodhichitta, and Guru Yoga. In some cases, I have put the prayers into my own words to make them relatable to a non-buddhist. The original text is available through Tergar.org. The Show The awesome circus of life My dear readers, listeners, and watchers, do your heads spin as mine does in this awesome circus of life? So much to take in, process, and react to - or not. I don't even pretend to keep up. My curiosity and fascination with life, people, stories, motivation, and connections continue unabated. I'm grateful to discover gobs of inspiring work almost every day. However, every few days, I need to integrate the shiny objects I discover and re-prioritize my activities. Before I tell you about some of my ongoing and upcoming projects, my activism focus has shifted. Not off patients and caregivers but realizing that I'm old. If I could have changed the world, it would have happened already.
Hello to you listening in Sweetwater, Tennessee! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Maybe like me you are feeling too old to be young and too young to be old. When we take a moment to look, we'll probably find that we're listening more to ourselves than to one another. But how can we create things together, coordinate together, learn together, trust one another if we're not listening? And what does it take to listen - in our organisational life, in our families, in our friendships, in our communities? It's both simpler, and harder, than it seems. This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about the courage, practice and support it takes to listen in a way that opens up possibility. It's hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Here's a link to the details of the new Thirdspace Coaching For Development programme for people who work in organisations, which we talked about today. Listen It's when we actually listen to another human being that they get to be human too. Listening allows a shift from I-It relating in which the other is essentially an object to us (an irritation, a way to get what I want, a way to feel good about myself) to I-You relating, in which the other gets to be a person. As Martin Buber points out, I-It relating is essentially a form of It-It relating, since it's impossible for us to show up as full human beings, even to ourselves, when we are in the midst of making another, or a group of others, into a thing. To relate to another in an I-You way, to listen to them in their fullness, bestows dignity on everyone and opens wide horizons for understanding, compassion, truthfulness, and relationship. Listening ought to be the easiest thing to do. After all, it requires no complex framework, no technique, no technology. And yet it can be so, so hard. Most of us have a lot of practicing to do in order to drop our need to be right, to be ‘the one', to be liked, and to hear only what we want to hear. In order to listen we have to relax our defensiveness, be skilful with the inner attacks of our own inner critic (which is ready to judge us even when there's no judgement coming from the speaker), get over our wish to control everything, and be willing to welcome whatever we experience. We have to be able to question our own stories and accounts, be open to seeing things in a whole new way, and quiet our inner world sufficiently that what is being said can reach us. And we have to learn how to be in contact with ourselves, a fundamental prerequisite for being in contact with others. Perhaps all of this is why real listening is so absent in our fearful, impatient culture. And why we could all benefit from doing some inner work if we want to do the vital outer work of listening well to the people around us. from Justin Wise's 'On Living and Working' Photo by Nick Fewings on Unsplash

In this week's pod, we welcomed Nick Fewings to discuss achieving high-performance teamwork and greater success. Nick Fewings, Director of Ngagementworks, calls himself a Teamologist, someone who specialises in the study of the dynamics of teamwork, using this knowledge, to help teams become more effective. After a 20-year career in banking, working his way up from a cashier to a project leader, and finally a change director, Nick has spent the last two decades, developing teams across the globe, encouraging, facilitating, and helping them to make a positive difference to the effectiveness of their teamwork. During this period, he has profiled thousands of individuals across hundreds of teams. Nick is also the creator of the Team DyNAmics Model that measures overall team effectiveness across 16 areas of teamwork, important in helping to achieve high performance. When not working with teams, he is also a highly regarded, award-winning keynote conference speaker and to date, has spoken at over 500 conferences worldwide, including every branch of the APM, in the UK. The main topics we discussed on the podcast were as follows:· Research suggests only 10% of teams are high performing, 50% are average and 40% dysfunctional· Most teams do not know which category they fall into because they do not measure their teamwork· It is useful to view the traits of people on good days and bad days when reviewing Insights profiles· Purpose is more important than trust in developing high performing teams· Purpose is a task-based element whereas trust is more about the relationship. Many teams were driven by tasks to the detriment of relationships· Good leaders will tap into the preferred communication styles of red, yellow, blue, and greens within their teams when briefing team members· Anonymous feedback is the best way to enable more honest feedback when measuring team effectiveness over a period of time· Excellence is impossible to achieve within a team. Some teams will come close· There is a correlation between high performing teams and project success but it is not apparent in the Project Management industry· Having the right skill set and adaptability to inspire teams is important when recruiting future leaders as opposed to trying to force the right balance upon a team here are links to some of the topics we discussed:· Team, Lead, Success – Nick Fewings: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Team-Lead-Succeed-high-performance-teamwork-ebook/dp/B09SZHC6P9· Team Dynamics Model: https://ngagementworks.com/teamwork/· Clarity 4D Profile – Nick Fewings: https://ngagementworks.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Nick_Fewings-Clarity4D-Profile.pdf· Google – What Makes a Good Team: https://rework.withgoogle.com/print/guides/5721312655835136/ Tune in next time when we're joined by Magnus Olsen to discuss career challenges, opportunities, and trends - a student's perspective. In this week's pod, we welcomed back Martin Paver to discuss what's been happening in the Project Data Analytics Hackathons Martin is the CEO and Founder of Projecting Success, a consultancy that specialises in leveraging project data to transform project delivery; from high end strategic consultancy through to apprentice training. He has led a $1bn megaproject and a multi $billion portfolio office. He is the founder of the Project Data Analytics community, comprising ~6,000 members who share a passion for leveraging the exhaust plume of project data. He regularly blogs and presents at international conferences, helping to ignite the professional imagination and inspire change. He is also the co-chair of the Project Data Analytics Task Force and is helping to lead the charge for disruptive change. The main topics we discussed on the podcast were as follows: · Many project professionals do not realise they are working with data but see it individual cost / schedule toolsets · We need to think differently, too many projects have failed using the Prince 2 / APM methodologies · 9,000 people are currently in the project data analytics community. We do not have enough data to back up the knowledge and skills of the individuals which will lead to better decisions · Need to do more work to get the solutions adopted within organisations · Data from construction companies will have an independent “steward” to monitor the usage of the information · Hackathons bring a variety of Project Professionals together to solve problems. The teams are made up of data analysts, project managers, students to ensure a diversity of thought · The investment in data analytics has increased 100 fold in the last year · Change is happening. Some people will choose to not evolve their skillsets and risk becoming harder to employ · Jeff Bezos “I want people in my team who are right most of the time”. Data supports leaders to justify business decisions based on past performance · There needs to be a support eco-system to incentivize using analytics and demonstrating the benefits · If you are interested in contributing to the Project Data movement, the following options are available o Join the London Data Analytics Meetups (past videos on website) o Attend the Project Hacks o Get trained up. In October 2021, the University of Michigan hosted a panel discussing Critical Digital Pedagogy. Moderated by Jesse Stommel, the panelists included Sean Michael Morris, Ruha Benjamin, and Martha Fay Burtis. In that discussion, Martha made a comment about wanting to say she loves her students, but that she's not always comfortable using that specific term. In this episode of Teacher of the Ear, she discusses her concerns and shares her thoughts about loving students. She frames her thinking in the context of a pedagogy of care, turning the traditional authority- and expertise-focused education model on its head. Martha views loving students as a situation that involves giving students freedom and flexibility while changing the nature of the work done in our classes. She explains how we need to change classroom work and not simply offload it onto students. That change, then, also entails setting limits for ourselves to avoid burnout. Care for ourselves and caring for students is all connected because at the heart of it, isn't teaching really a labor of love? Our theme music is by Blue Dot Sessions. This episode's cover art is by Nick Fewings on Unsplash. The show is hosted on Anchor.fm, and you can subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. This was the conversation we should all be having. There is a “new leadership” model that is emerging right now. One that is more humanistic, open and vulnerable. These uncertain times, the change we are experiencing, and the resulting anxiety, fear, and grief that is pervasive have sparked a new ‘communication mode’. That is a good thing. Molly McPherson of Confident Communications and I dive into how much communication, messaging, and the work that we do has changed in the past few weeks. What has changed and what that means for us, and so much more. As a world we have a lot to grieve over right now, kids who are missing their last year of primary school, grieving the loss of how things were - being able to see and check up on family & friends, or the loss of a loved one. Along with that being selfish (say as in hoarding supplies) became universally abhorrent overnight. What you’ll hear on today’s episode: Accountability is the new black Honest and open vulnerability inspires trust How fear shows up in the time of Covid What does Leadership look like in a pandemic Why leaders are looking inward, to their staff April Fools day was No Joke How your senses are triggered Covid Crisis response kit Humanistic leadership How to be of service in a pandemic Why we are grieving Isolation and it’s impact Visiting during social isolating Work with Lara Apply for an On-air Coaching Call! Some think the key to happiness lies in going to the right school to get the right degree so they can get the right job. Head first. However, could this way of thinking be backwards? Is finding and living out our core purpose in life what helps us experience the most happiness? Jesus had a clear opinion on the issue, and it started with elevating the heart over the head. Join Rick as he continues our two-month pursuit of what it takes to become a “new” version of yourself (Hint- It’s not by trying harder to get better). This week we’ll look at some Bible-based examples and two different films as we explore the role trust plays in our spiritual transformation. Have you joined the Pigs? We're a group of friends ready to go all in with Jesus--to live a life that's “free indeed” because we’re wholly dependent on him. Cracking The Code Of High Performance Teamwork On this edition of Business Connections Live Steve Hyland asks Nick Fewings is CEO of a learning and development company Ngagementworks about Cracking The Code Of High performance Teamwork and why effective teamwork is vital to the success of every organisation and even more so in times of political and economic instability. Few organisations actually quantify what it is, how to measure it and how to achieve high-performance in teamwork. Understanding why one team performs better than another is hard to crack. Google has spent millions on Project Aristotle with inconclusive results. However, Nick believes he has cracked it with a combination of behavioural profiling and the Team DyNAmics© Model he created. Formerly a Change Director with Barclays, Nick is accredited in project and change management and a business behavioural psychologist. When not working with teams, he speaks at conferences throughout the world about leadership, effective teamwork and the importance of building collaborative relationships.
