Send us a textOn this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, after more than 60 interviews, today the tables are turned, and I'm the guest. My interviewer is my husband, Corey. If you'd like to learn more about his work, check out his episode on life as a Marine Engineer. In this interview, I answer all the questions I have asked my guests, but I also reflect a lot on what I have learned in this process, which as it turns out, is a lot of things. Before we get into, I just wanted to say how incredibly grateful I am to my guests, who took time out of their day to talk candidly about work with me, both strangers and dear friends and family. I'm also so grateful for the support of my friends and family through this process, I've learned more than I ever expected, and I can't wait to share that all with you. Thank you all so much for listening, for coming on the show to talk with me, and all the notes of support. Send us a textOn this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Nathan, a technical account manager. Generally, technical account managers are the technical support liaison for clients of software companies. They form and maintain relationships with their clients, help them resolve issues with the products, and make sure they're are able to use it effectively, which is really important because software can often be a huge investment for a client. We cover so much in this episode, including thoughts on the future of this work with the continued rise of AI, the challenges of working in a service role (even a highly skilled one), the transition from in office to remote work, and how this role fits into the typical software company structure. I'm so glad to have an opportunity to share that path, because we so often romanticize the path of ditching your 9-5 to be your own boss, but there are tons of reasons that being an employee might be a better path for a person, especially in an in demand field like this. We cover so many important tips and considerations in the field, like the earning potential of different specialities, making sure you're applying for an accredited program, and what actually happens if you accidentally get into an MRI with metal in your body. Send us a Text Message. On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Meagan Tehseldar, a high school English Language Arts teacher. When I first envisioned this podcast, teacher was definitely a career that was high on my list, and Meagan was the perfect guest for this because she's had experience across different states, public, private, and charter, and now is teaching virtually, so if you're curious about what life as a teacher might be like, we get into so many different paths you could take. I also appreciated how candid Meagan was about the challenges in this career right now, like some of the other fields I've covered, teaching as a profession is in a  tough spot right now. If you're considering going into education, you'll be in incredibly high demand, but that's partly because it's so hard to find enough people that want to fill the roles, which is definitely something to consider as you consider your own ability to cope with the specific challenges in this field. Send us a Text Message. On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Jordan Barnett-Parker, a master goldsmith. Jordan has had a really interesting career, and he's one of quite a few people I've talked to at this point that found their career passion through a class in high school, so maybe a vote in favor of just trying as much as you can as early as you can, because you never know what might catch your interest in a way nothing else has before. We also talk about how pursing your passion for a career while probably more rewarding, can also sometimes be the more challenging choice. The people that I've talked to that seem really happy with that path are so committed that they really can't imagine anything else, if you you're thinking of turning a personal passion into a career, that's probably a decent litmus test to see if you should dive in or not. Finally, one thing I have noticed about small business owners is that they often have a handful of paths within on general field. We'll get into what that looks like for Jordan, but if there is a particular field  you're interested in, talking with someone you know in that field might lead you to niches within that you didn't even know existed, but when pieced together, can create a thriving business. You can find out more about Jordan's work here: Website: https://jordanadamdesigns.com/Instagram: @jordanadamdesignsIf you like the show, please rate and review on iTunes and Spotify  (linked below) and please share with a friend! Welcome to Real Work, Real Life where I talk to real people about what they do for work and what that means for their lives. Today I'm talking with Beth Sandlin, a Pilates Instructor, and the founder of Trifecta Pilates. After years of working as an in person instructor, Beth started Trifecta to expand the reach and accessibility of Pilates, offering teacher training and online Pilates workouts (long before that became so normalized during the pandemic) available through membership, an app, and YouTube and trauma informed. We talk a lot about the ins and outs of a career in movement as well as the challenges and joys of starting a small business while still working full time, and even get into the details on different income streams, and so much more.If you enjoyed this episode, you might also like my interview with Jenna J, a personal trainer, which you can find here: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/personal-trainer/id1673653251?i=1000641161798You can find out more about Beth here: Website: https://trifectapilates.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/trifectapilatesYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/trifectapilatesIf you like the show, please rate and review on iTunes and Spotify  (linked below) and please share with a friend! We talk a lot about general life in the maritime industry and also get into all the details of working as a charter captain. It can be great gig for passionate anglers who love active work on the water and meeting lots of new people you might never meet otherwise. Because it's seasonal in our area, most captains either have another full time job or do something else in the winter, so it can pair well with winter-only work, or for people that have a lot of time off from their primary work. Jenna describes her approach as anti diet, so she doesn't coach intentional fat loss. We talk about that in the interview, but if you want to learn more, check out her podcast Tough Cookie Talks. While this interview would be great for someone that ever considered building a career in fitness, a lot of what we talk about would be relevant to any kind of small business, like the challenges of balancing the fear of not enough work without  working yourself into the ground, the huge difference between your hourly rate and what you take home, and the personal relationships you get to develop with clients. On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Urmi Hossain, an investment associate based in Canada with the goal of becoming a portfolio manager. Urmi is a CFA, or a Chartered Financial Analyst. CFA is a globally recognized professional designation that measures and certifies the competence and integrity of financial analysts. Candidates are required to pass three levels of exams covering areas, such as accounting, economics, ethics, money management, and security analysis. Working in financial services can offer a lot in terms of compensation and benefits and upward potential. We also talk about the challenge of finding that first job out of school and how disheartening it can be struggling to get your foot in the door somewhere, even when you have all of the qualifications on every posting. So if you're there now, just know you're not alone. My best advice for that stage of your career is to keep a number of strong applications open at once, don't stop looking and applying until you've actually started a job. Hiring for salaried, professional jobs can take months of stops and starts, so if you have a lot of irons in the fire at once, it's not so disappointing if one falls through. If you enjoyed this episode, you might enjoy my interview with Steph, a Certified Public Accountant:  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/certified-public-accountant-tax/id1673653251?i=1000602280682You can find out more about Urmi here: LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/urmi-hossainBook: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0B75X14G7/ref=sr_1_2?crid=38ODHSOSYZ3W8&keywords=urmi+hossain&qid=1658373403&sprefix=urmi+hossain%2Caps%2C98&sr=8-2Blog: https://www.myways.ca/YouTube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZoiI0SGU0Xo9_lNjtLWtgg Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/urmamio/If you like the show, please rate and review on iTunes and Spotify  (linked below) and please share with a friend! Trina built a career in radio before launching her own station, so if you're interested in radio or podcasting, this could be a great episode for you. We also talk a lot about the shift from employee to entrepreneur, an experience that would be applicable to anyone thinking about taking that leap.  We didn't get much into pay, especially because in Trina's current role as an entrepreneur, it's so variable. But I did do some research on salaries in broadcast radio. Seemed to be higher for sports broadcast announcers, but fewer available jobs. Of course there are always going to be outliers of highly paid hosts, but the median annual salary is around $40K, with a range of $30K to $70K. Radio producers seemed to have a similar range. I linked Trina's radio station in the show notes if you're interested in hearing more, as well as other episodes with similar themes, if you liked this episode and want to listen to more. You can listen to Trina's station here: https://runradio.net/If you liked this episode, you might like these too! Digital Media Consultant and Strategist: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/digital-media-consultant-sports-industry/id1673653251?i=1000620885913Music Industry, Producer, Manager and Singer-Songwriter: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/music-industry-producer-manager-and-singer-songwriter/id1673653251?i=1000623157811Music Industry, Singer, Manager, and Coach: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/music-industry-singer-manager-and-coach/id1673653251?i=1000622386657Theatrical Lighting Designer: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/theatrical-lighting-designer/id1673653251?i=1000632557420Children's Book Illustrator and Author: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/childrens-book-illustrator-and-author/id1673653251?i=1000617830582If you like the show, please rate and review on iTunes and Spotify  (linked below) and please share with a friend! But for all the people I have talked to, it's seems like it's all worth it. On this week's episode of of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Tracey, a pediatric occupational therapist. One thing Tracey mentions is that a lot of people don't know what OTs actually do. Occupational therapy enables people of all ages to participate in daily living. Occupational therapy intervention uses everyday life activities to promote health, well-being, and the ability to participate in the important activities in your life. This includes any meaningful activity that a person wants to accomplish, including taking care of yourself and your family, working, volunteering, going to school, among many others.I've talked to a few different people in the therapy field and they all seem to have some degree of the same issue: the work is in high demand but the pay has not kept up, meanwhile the education requirements and cost continue to increase and you're often required to complete an unpaid internship before beginning work. Despite these challenges, it can be incredibly meaningful work. If you're interested in hearing other related interviews, I talked to Dawn, a therapist in private practice, Kat, a physical therapist assistant, Alison, a social worker, and Samantha, a music therapist, which I'll link in the show notes. Another theme that has come up in quite a few interviews is people finding that they are best suited to a speciality in their field that they actually did poorly in or didn't like in college. I think probably the message there is to keep your mind open, liking or doing well is something in school is not always an indication that it will be right for you as a job, and of course, vice versa. Other episodes you might like too:Social Worker: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/social-worker-in-canada/id1673653251?i=1000608593635Music Therapist: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/music-therapist/id1673653251?i=1000631717144Therapist in Private Practice: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/therapist-private-practice/id1673653251?i=1000619359028Physical Therapist Assistant: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/physical-therapist-assistant/id1673653251?i=1000615135619If you want to learn more about Tracey:Website: https://peds.thinkific.com/Website: https://parentnicuconnection.com/Email: tkond423@gmail.comIf you like the show, please rate and review on iTunes and Spotify  (linked below) and please share with a friend! On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Ethan, a theatrical lighting designer, primarily for local theaters. This role is a really interesting combination of creative expression and technological skill. This could be a great job for someone that lives and breathes theater, but doesn't necessarily want to be on the stage. It could also be a great path for someone that wants to live a bit of a nomadic lifestyle traveling as needed to support different productions. Ethan and I talk a bit about pay, but I did some research on my own, and the national average salary is about $40-$60K a year. Some people who work in this field are unionized, which can certainly have its challenges and limitations, but also provides workers support and protections, and can secure access to benefits, which you're unlikely to find outside of a union. I probably shouldn't have been surprised to learn this but I was: working on lights high off the ground is a prerequisite for the job, so if you're truly afraid of heights, this one isn't for you. You can find more about Ethan here:https://www.ethanentermedia.com/https://www.instagram.com/ethanentermedia/If you liked this episode, you might like these too:1. On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Samantha, a board certified music therapist. Music therapy is not as common as many other therapies you might be familiar with, there are only a few thousand certified therapists in the US. If you're not familiar with it, I found more information on the American Music Therapy website: Music Therapy is the clinical & evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship, it can help clients do things like manage stress and pain, express feelings, improve communication. So if something in the therapy field interests you, and you also love music, this could be a path to consider. That said, there are some challenges in the field. Despite plenty of demand for this service, pay can be relatively low for the level of education and certification required, and like many other therapy fields, an unpaid internship is required. Services can be reimbursed through Medicaid but not typically private insurance, so the people who have access to this care is impacted by that.We also talk a lot about the highs and lows of owning your own business, as well as Samantha's side projects that are related to this work. That in itself is something to think about in your career choices. Many people want or need variety in their working hours or multiple streams of income. So when you think about a specific career path, you don't necessarily have to be bound by the hours and pay of that one role full time, so many people find themselves kind of piecing together lots of things to create the life they really want. It's certainly not for everyone, but it might be for you. The more people I speak with the more I find that the absolute key to finding work that fits into a joyful life is truly knowing yourself, what brings you joy, what causes misery, outside of the social expectations of what you *should* like and dislike, and finding the work that fits into that vision as well as your individual circumstances allow. The sooner you are able to know yourself like that, the happier you'll be. So let's get into it!More about Music Therapy: https://www.musictherapy.org/Links to learn more about Samantha's work:www.boisemusictherapycompany.comwww.instagram.com/boisemusictherapywww.instagram.com/everybrainisdifferentTwo other episodes to check out if you liked this one:Child Psychologist: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/child-psychologist/id1673653251?i=1000612471128Therapist in Private Practice: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/therapist-private-practice/id1673653251?i=1000619359028If you like the show, please rate and review on iTunes and Spotify  (linked below) and please share with a friend! On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Paige. All of my previous episodes have focused on the guest's work, and we do talk quite a bit about Paige's work as Head of Operations at an eCommerce Aggregator. So if you're interested in learning more about what it's like to work in start up leadership, there's a lot of great information for you here. But we also talk alot about another topic: the realities of life as a working parent. Paige's popular social media account She is a Paige Turner covers so many topics that will be relatable to working parents, from the cost of childcare and the challenges of finding it, to the imbalance in who shoulders the mental load in a family, even when both parents work full time outside the home, to how challenging it can be to raise children without the village that we hear so much about. Something like 80% of people will have a child at some point in their lives, so chances are good that you will have to balance your work with parenthood of some kind. And if you don't, it's almost guaranteed that your coworkers, your leaders, or your employees will. You can find Paige on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook @sheisapaigeturner. Two other episodes to check out if you liked this one:Nanny and Family Assistant: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/nanny-family-assistant/id1673653251?i=1000629368573Childcare Owner and Operator: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/early-childhood-educator-childcare-owner-and-operator/id1673653251?i=1000627718631Tech Startup CEO and Cofounder: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tech-start-up-ceo-and-cofounder/id1673653251?i=1000614287303If you like the show, please rate and review on iTunes and Spotify  (linked below) and please share with a friend! On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Sarah, a nanny family assistant. You might also know Sarah as the Modern Nanny, her popular social media account that provides community for people in this typically coworker-less industry in information for employers and parents. If you're interested in the caregiving field, working as a Nanny if you find the right employers offers a ton of benefits. Many different schedule options, more freedom, often better pay, and the ability to focus on fewer children often for longer periods of time, which can create a deeper bond.Of course, as we talk about in the episode, there are many challenges with any kind of domestic work. The roots of this issue run deep: from the Domestic Workers Alliance website:  "During the 1930s, landmark New Deal legislation introduced basic workplace rights in the U.S., but domestic and farm workers were excluded due to a compromise with Southern legislators. The exclusion of domestic workers from workplace laws passed in subsequent years became the norm, and these racist and sexist exclusions continue to exist in local, state and federal laws in the U.S."This has led to domestic workers being among the most vulnerable and exploited workers in the labor force. They often face long work hours, low pay, sudden job loss, sexual harassment, and physical or verbal abuse.Despite being one of the fastest growing workforces in the nation, nannies, housecleaners and home care workers work in isolation, face challenges in negotiating for better working conditions, and have little to no recourse or ability to enforce the basic rights they have when violated.” As you'll see if you follow Sarah, she's one of many working to improve these issues, you can even find her twice a year census of her followers to improve pay transparency in this field. I interviewed the owner and operator of an in-home, licensed, accredited childcare two weeks ago, so if you didn't listen to that episode, it would be a great pairing if you're considering this general field. This is also a great example of how so many people's career's progress in ways you might not expect. You start off in one field, in Sarah's case as a Behavioral Therapist, see how a different role might actually suit your needs better and then move there, and with even more experience, identify a need in your industry that you can fill, even if it takes you into a pretty different job function. On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Morgan, a social media manager through her business Casco Collaborative. If you're curious about social media management or what it's like making the leap from a corporate role to entrepreneurship, this is a great episode for you. Most of Morgan's clients are in beauty and wellness, an industry that she is personally passionate about too. I think this is also a great episode about the power of knowing yourself. Morgan built a company doing something she personally really enjoys, creating content for social media, supporting an industry that she loves, full of people she enjoys spending time with, and she's thriving. Truly knowing yourself, and understanding what brings you joy and what makes you miserable, may sound simple, but it's fundamental to finding fulfillment in your working life, and by extension, your entire life. Most importantly, what that looks like will be different for everyone, and I think it's rarely *just* about your job function. That's certainly a piece of it, but it's just one component of whether you will enjoy the time you spend working, or dread it, it's all the things that people share here each week that make up a full experience at work.If you're interested in working with Morgan or learning more about what she offers, you can find her on Instagram @cascocollaborative.If you like the show, please rate and review on iTunes and Spotify  (linked below) and please share with a friend! On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Stacie, an owner and operator of an accredited, licensed family childcare out of her home. You know this if you're a working parent of small children, but childcare workers are in incredible demand right now, so if it's a field that you're passionate about, you will likely have your pick of jobs and options, and access to low cost or free education in the field. It's also an opportunity to have a meaningful, impactful role in a child's life, and as we talk about in the episode, for their whole family.Part of why it's so in demand are the many challenges in the field. Relatively low pay, often no benefits, and a high degree of burnout, especially after the pandemic that put so many childcare workers in impossible situations daily. We get into this a bit in the episode, but childcare is at a breaking point in the US right now. Slightly more than half the country lives in a “child-care desert,” which a report from the Century Foundation Think Tank defines as “an area where there are more than three children under age 5 for each licensed child-care slot.” Quoted from an article in the Atlantic this summer by Elliot Haspell “At its core is a financial paradox. Child-care providers have very high fixed costs due to the need for low child-to-adult ratios, so they can't pay their staff well without significantly increasing parent fees (many child-care workers make less than parking attendants). In other words, child care simultaneously is too expensive for parents and brings in too little revenue for programs to operate sustainably. In fact, the industry is still down more than 50,000 employees from pre-pandemic levels. Centers have shut down for want of staff, long waitlists have stretched to the point of absurdity, and the rising cost of care continues to exceed inflation.”Those depressing statistics aside, Stacie's thoughtful approach to childcare is beautiful hear, and while I think this episode would be great for anyone interested in working in this field, I think working parents everywhere will come away with a new appreciation for the value people like Stacie bring to our families. So let's get into it!Sources: “A Tragically American Approach to the Child-Care Crisis” by Elliot Haspell in the Atlantic Magazine, found here: https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2023/06/child-care-united-states-employer-based/674269/Century Foundation Report, “Child Care Cliff: 3.2 Million Children Likely to Lose Spots with End of Federal Funds”: https://tcf.org/content/report/child-care-cliff/ If you like the show, please rate and review on iTunes and Spotify  (linked below) and please share with a friend! It's important to note that people with disabilities are protected under the American Disabilities act, passed only in 1990, that prohibits discrimination in employment and requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities. From the Learning Disabilities Association of America, "people with LD possess average or above average intelligence levels, and often have varying areas of ability, or “a weakness within a sea of strengths.” They tend to be creative, persistent, loyal, and good problem-solvers, often achieving a high degree of success in the workplace when the disability is accommodated and their strengths are utilized to the fullest." Happily many employers are proactively working toward true disability inclusion Disability:IN ranks employers each year based on their level of disability inclusion. You can read more of Michelle's work on her blog, Michelle's mission. A few weeks ago, I interviewed my Dad, a boat captain, and today, I am so pleased to share another very special guest, my Mom, Trish, an active-retired Judge on this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life.We talk a lot about what it's like to be a judge, but we also cover the different roles she's had within the legal profession, so if you're considering law, this will be a great episode for you. My mom graduated law school in 1979, when about 8% of lawyers were women, today that number is closer to 40% and that continues to inch up each year. One of the many moments that led me to want to do this podcast was attending my Mom's retirement party a few years ago, and seeing how respected she was for her work, and what an impact she made in our community. My mom never talked about her work at home, but I know from talking to others over the years, that through her work, she's been able to genuinely help people in scary and stressful situations. A lot of jobs don't offer an opportunity to make an impact like that, and understanding how important that is to you can be really useful in charting your career path. I'm so excited to share my Mom with you all. And if you're lucky enough to have your parents still around and have a good relationship with them, consider this your sign to get a conversation with them on tape. On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Dawn Friedman, a Therapist in private practice. Dawn is an LPCC, which stands for licensed professional clinical counselor. One of the many things we talk about is the pros and cons of the various ways of becoming a mental healthcare provider, so if that path interests you, she raises a lot of important considerations. Being a therapist can be a great role for someone that is curious about people, resilient, empathetic, but capable of holding boundaries. It's a job that can offer a lot of flexibility and novelty over the course of a career. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. If you're interested in pursuing a career in this field, and have questions, you can reach out to Dawn at dawnfriedman@gmail.com.If you have feedback or are interested in being interviewed, please reach out at realworkreallife@gmail.com or @realworkreallifepod on Instagram. Transcripts now available at: https://realworkreallife.buzzsprout.comIf you're enjoying the show, follow so you never miss an episode, rate and review on iTunes and Spotify, and, most importantly, tell a friend!

On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I have a very special guest! I'm talking with my Dad, John, an active-retired boat captain. If you've listened since the beginning, this podcast started out as an idea for my own kids, to find a way for them to hear about the realities of work from people in many different careers. So it's such a special moment for me to talk to one of the coolest people I know about their career, and share it with you all today. As you'll hear, my Dad has had a lot of different roles in the maritime industry, from an employee to a business owner, driving schooners, tugboats, and ferries, even running the career office at a maritime academy for a time. My Dad's approach to work fundamentally shaped my own understanding what work could be. Working hard, doing your best, finding something you love, but also not sacrificing the rest of your life in service of work. So before I get into the interview, I will leave you with a quote that my Dad has repeated throughout my life, an excerpt from “On Work” by Kahlil Gibran:"When you work you are a flute through whose heart the whispering of the hours turns to music. Which of you would be a reed, dumb and silent, when all else sings together in unison? .....Work is love made visible."Transcripts now available at: https://realworkreallife.buzzsprout.comFollow the podcast on Instagram @realworkreallifepodIf you're enjoying the show, follow so you never miss an episode, rate and review on iTunes and Spotify, and, most importantly, tell a friend!

On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Renee. Renee works in Corporate Learning and Development, currently working as the Director of Training at a start up. This type of work can be great for people that love learning new things, are creative and collaborative, and often, for teachers looking to use their skills in a different line of work.  Depending on the industry you're working in, there are also often great benefits, compensation, work life balance and stability that can often come from corporate roles, as well as the option to work remotely, and the flexibility to work across many different fields. One of the challenges Renee mentions is that this work can sometimes be undervalued in an organization. At first glance that may seem like a small obstacle, but for some people, it can be a real hurdle to deal with over the course of a long career. Renee mentions checking out the Association for Talent Development and considering their certification course if you're interested in this field. In this episode of Real Work, Real Life I'm talking with Allison Rothwell. Allison does a lot of different things, she has a day job as an Administrative Assistant, she's an actor, she's had many different side gigs over the years, but most recently, she's found her passion as a Declutter Coach. While my previous interviews tend to focus more on a linear career path to a particular job, so many people find themselves, both by choice and requirement, doing something like Allison. Trying lots of things, balancing stability with excitement and passion, and hopefully, finding something you really love along the way, which Allison has done with acting and organizing. It's a great reminder that, for most people, work is not, and doesn't have to be a linear upwards progression, but can be more of life long journey of trying new things, and making different decisions based on the needs of your life at the moment. If you're interested in learning more about what Allison does or need help decluttering, you can find her here:Website: www.iamtheclutterbuster.comInstagram: @iamtheclutterbusterFacebook: www.facebook.com/iamtheclutterbusterEmail: Iamtheclutterbuster@gmail.com
