Marcus Wood: Composer and Co-lyricist Marcus studied Acting and Stage Combat at East 15. He supported his studies as a professional composer and lyricist – writing over 140 songs, a chart single (Belgium), 15 short films and 30 videogames. Working with Nathan Rees (writer), Marcus produced, edited and starred in The Other Way (2019) an award-winning short film which was part of the 168 Film Festival. Video games include Stellaxy, Randy and Manilla and Ghosts in Meatspace. Theatre credits include as fight director on Skin In The Game (London, 2019) and as actor/musician in Sanditon: 200 Years Later (The Other Palace, London 2019) where he met and worked with Vicky Clubb. They realised that they shared a passion for musical theatre and Viking culture and the idea for combining the two was the start of the idea for a new musical. Nathan Rees: Book writer and Co-lyricist Nathan graduated from East 15's Acting and Stage Combat course in 2019. While there, Nathan created his first show Vic-Tory-Us. As a writer, he won an award at the 168 Film Festival for The Other Way, a short film (Fire and Iron Productions). He is now resident writer for Fire and Iron Productions working on short films and features. Theatre credits include Buttons in Cinderella (Gary Starr Creative), Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet (KeepIt100), Kostya Levin in Anna Karenina (East 15), William Shakespeare in Whack-A-Head (East 15). As fight directors, Nathan and Marcus workshopped the idea of the sound of live sword fighting becoming part of the percussive elements of the score. To facilitate communicating this to directors and performers they have developed ‘Swordography' a new form of choreographic notation. Nathan has been passionate about musical theatre since he was very young, and he is continuing to advance his musical theatre skill set; he was accepted on the BML Librettist Workshop programme for this year. With combined passions for musical theatre, Vikings and thrilling stage combat, Nathan, Vicky and Marcus started working together and early workshops confirmed that there was a future in bringing to live theatre a musical rooted in Viking mythology and culture. Blodlina It is 900AD and two Viking sisters are fighting for control of their late Father's kingdom. Set against the gathering storm clouds of imminent invasion, Blodlina tells the story of a tiny community bravely fighting, against all odds, for its very existence. Amidst broken hearts and shattered swords, romance and rebellion, the story unfolds under the watchful eye of two mischievous, interfering teenage Norse gods, Loki and Thor. Blodlina captivated audiences with its thrilling sword fights and a musical score ranging from haunting folk to heavy metal. It seamlessly blends modern themes into a story inspired by Norse mythology, creating a gripping new family musical experience.

On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Brittany, an executive director and cofounder of a school of theatrical violence and stage combat in Philadelphia, Argent Combat. We cover so much about this work, from the many paths you could take within this broader field, to the impact of AI on the industry, to the way Brittany's organization is advancing equity, inclusion, and best practices around consent in this community. If you liked this episode, you might like some of the other interviews I've done with people in the Arts. I spoke with Alex, a Children's Book Illustrator and Author, Ethan, a Theatrical Lighting Designer, Kiara, Singer, Manager, and Coach and Tony, Music Producer, Developer, Manager (linked below). After talking with all of these different people building a career for themselves in the arts, there definitely seems to be some common themes. There are all the challenges that go along with any kind of entrepreneurial field. Some instability, wildly variable pay, limited location options, and the challenges that go along with making your living from a skill that ultimately subjective. But for all the people I have talked to, it's seems like it's all worth it. If it's something you're truly passionate about, the value of spending your working time on something you love and the freedom that can come with these types of career paths, is worth all of the challenges for some. You can find out more about Argent Combat here: https://www.argentcombat.com/If you liked this episode, you might like these too! BONUS EPISODE! "One Episode/One Listener: Pamela"We had an amazing idea for a podcast episode. What if you could overhear a raw, honest conversation between Sean and one listener. In one episode. Meet Pamela Bob. She's a veteran of several Broadway shows who reached out to us once the podcast was released to let us know how much the podcast has meant to her. Pamela and Sean started talking, and then they just kept talking. About what's seriously wrong with our industry: Being denied a voice. Bullying. The imposition of "family" constructs. Being labeled "difficult." The lack of mental health support in our workspaces. And it's quite a conversation!Spoiler Warning: "Relatively" spoiler free for Seasons 1 and 2. There is something about seeing performative violence on stage that has captivated audiences since the very first plays some 2,500 years ago. But the dramatic actions taken either on stage or on screen obviously can't be real, right? I mean... obviously most plays don't end in a real murder, but what about the rest? Just how much of what we watch is pretend? Also I do apologize for the delay of the episode. I've been gravely ill as you can no doubt hear and without power, which has been a blast. Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts. I'm your host as always Colton Petry. My guests today are Brittany Holdahl Donahue and J. Oliver Donahue. This husband and wife combo are the founders of Argent Combat, a training center for some of the coolest of yet most misunderstood of skills: Stage Combat. The three of us are pretty open during the interview about what nerds we are, but how awesome is it that you can go to a place and learn sword fighting, knife play, and unarmed combat training without actually hurting your partner. And that's a theme you'll notice throughout the episode; this practice can give you so much more than a showy new trick. It can help you in a swath of other ways, like communication with those close to you, a better understanding of yourself, and so much more. I hope you'll stick around for one of the most fun recording sessions I've had to date, with two absolutely incredible people. ( Www.ArgentCombat.Com ) Let's get (kind of) violent! I know this was a long one, but honestly I just had fun hanging out with these two incredible people. I hope you enjoyed that as well! I also think there is something so almost ironic about picking up a weapon to reassure oneself that they'll not do harm again. It's almost poetic. Anyway, the October rankings as of now: 1. The United States, led by Washington, Ohio, and New York. 2. The United Kingdom, with England now firmly at the top. 3. Australia, led back to the top 3 by New South Wales. 4. Canada, with Alberta just barely edging out Ontario. 5. Bulgaria, still hanging in with the top 5 for now. That's it for this week! Have a great weekend I'll see you all back here for the next episode! Until the next episode, please do all the things to help the show: rate, review, like, and subscribe. Reach out to DumbEnoughPodcast@Gmail.Com or on any social media if you want to reach me personally. Most importantly, Stay Dumb!

HELLO THEATER PEOPLE!! For the first time in FIVE FREAKING YEARS I'm breaking the silence of the Theater People Universe to bring you a VERY SPECIAL episode. A few months ago, I discovered the podcast "Stage Combat" it's a true crime style THEATER PODCAST in which actor Sean Hayden tells his TRUE horror story of being cast as a lead in the Goodspeed production of "Billy Elliot." It was a dream come true for him, until everything went wrong. I don't' want to give too much away here, but this is the kind of story we NEVER hear in the theater world--one in which an actor does the unthinkable by standing up for himself even when he knows it's going to cost him everything. For this very special episode, we're going to play episode 1 of "Stage Combat" and then stick around for my in-depth interview with Sean. You are not going to believe this story. And you're going to come away inspired. And I can't wait for you to hear it!Binge all of season 1 of Stage Combat here. And make sure you're subscribed so you'll automatically get the brand new episodes when season 2 premieres on July 25th.
