Urmi Hossain shares her sense of belonging in the world. As a proud South Asian woman who has an interesting and inspiring story that we can all learn from. Her family of origin roots are embedded in Bangladesh, as both parents are from there, but a few years before she was born, they emigrated to Sicily, Italy, for better opportunities. It is heard that Urmi was the first Bengali baby born in Sicily. She grew up speaking Bangla at home and Italian in school and with her friends. Currently, she lives in Montreal, Canada, and her multilingual and cultural influence is extraordinary. She speaks about being a “third culture kid,” which means her roots are embedded in one culture, while growing up in another, and then taking both of those backgrounds and moving to another country. When she relocated to Canada to attend university she was fluent in four languages: Bengali, Italian, English and French. She is currently learning Spanish which she knows is important for her work. Her philosophy and advice to immigrants is to integrate quickly and building a community is essential for growth. Urmi fell in love with the finance field while at university and now has a successful career as an investment associate. In her spare time over the last three years, she has managed her own YouTube page, which focuses on sharing study tips for the CFA exam, among many other interesting topics. She lives every day to its fullest and embraces new professional and personal challenges with grace. Her inner strength and resilience are evident at every turn as she finds that she belongs exactly where she is.
If you were raised in Italy, had parents from Bangladesh and had a heart for women in South Africa, where would you begin? If you're Urmi Hossain you bloom where you're planted—Quebec, Canada. Although she works her 9-5 job in the financial industry, Urmi's most important work happens from 5-9 when she mentors, blogs and leads workshops to empower women around the world.

Hello, I'd really like to grow this email list. If you enjoy this newsletter, it would mean the world to Jola and I if you encouraged one friend/fellow immigrant/colleague to subscribe…Very likely, the the only thing you will get in return is warm fuzzy feelings, and if I can attribute it to you, I'd personally send you a thank you email.Join us as we explore the bitter-sweet world of the immigrant. In this episode, I'm speaking with Urmi Hossain, who after 14 years in Canada, still identifies as an Italian-Bengali living in Canada rather than Canadian. In her words, “I feel like I'm betraying my origins if I put Canadian because I only became Canadian later on in my life.”I find her position so fascinating because she's one of the few immigrants I've met who don't struggle with the state of in-betweenness - where you feel like you're suspended between your former culture and the new one.To Urmi, Canada will always be her second home, the first place where she felt she could be comfortable in her dual identity. The first place where she met people who were navigating multiple cultural identities like herself. People who spoke more than one language. Unlike Italy where her friends were ‘strictly Italian.'But...Urmi still thinks she probably is going to retire to Italy. In this conversation, Urmi and I chat about Canada's multiculturalism and how it helps people like her feel at home. We also explore:* What do we mean when we say “Canadian culture”* The quality of Canadian coffee vs. Italian coffee* Choosing to move to Canada* Why she'll probably retire to Italy at some point, and more good stuff.Official Links

“I never felt I was Bengali enough. I never felt I was Italian enough…And because of that, I struggled to find my cultural identity”. Urmi Hossain is Italian by birth, and Bengali by blood, but there's always been friction between those two identities. Born and raised in Italy to immigrant parents from Bangladesh, Urmi grew up at the center of a clash between Italian culture, strict Muslim parenting, and a society that wanted to categorize her one way or another. You know that tendency we all sometimes have where we want to define someone's cultural identity with one convenient, hyphenated label? Well, it's not always that simple. And on this episode, Urmi explains why it can also be a real problem. She tells us about her ongoing journey of breaking out of a single cultural box and how her writing and mentoring helps others do the same. Urmi talks about the push and pull of being raised in a country where cultural diversity is not the norm, and how it took her many years and a move to a new country to find her confidence, leadership skills, and self-awareness. In her book Discovering Your Identity: A rebirth from interracial struggle, Urmi explores the delicate balance of cultural self-discovery and her journey toward owning her own identity. Now she mentors young women of all cultures, in business and finance, helping them push their careers forward and embrace their power.About the ShowThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”—Joseph Cambell (1904 – 1987)Every journey is a tapestry of experiences, and Urmi Hossain's story weaves a vibrant pattern of culture, identity and self-discovery that stretches across continents. Our conversation peels back the layers of Urmi's life, from her early years in Italy to her adventures in Canada, illuminating the bittersweet nature of frequent relocations. She recounts the challenges of being a Bengali Muslim in Catholic schools and the complexity of being a third culture kid caught between worlds. With each move, Urmi faced the daunting task of bidding farewell to friendships and adapting to new surroundings, yet she found a way to embrace the excitement of exploration and the richness of Canada's multicultural milieu.Digging deeper into the heart of immigration, Urmi reflects on her parents' brave leap from Bangladesh to Italy—perhaps influenced by Italy's permissive Martelli's law—a journey made not for work but for the promise of a better future. This chapter of Urmi's life paints an intriguing portrait of identity struggles, as she feels more anchored to her Italian and Bengali roots than to her Canadian citizenship. Urmi likens the move to Canada to Joseph Campbell's “cave you fear to enter,” which holds “the treasure you seek.” The analogy captures both the risks and the rewards of diving into the unknown, a country where even the language, Quebecois, created a formidable hurdle to acceptance. Her adventurous spirit is a testament to the power of taking chances and the profound impact such decisions have on shaping one's life narrative. In the final stretch of our intimate dialogue, we traverse the landscape of Urmi's personal growth and the resilience she has honed over the years. Becoming a Toastmaster has helped her in pursuing her ultimate quest for giving a coveted TED Talk. She is a dedicated mentor to other women and girls through her volunteer work in Canada, and Urmi shares how her commitment to fitness, particularly boxing, has fortified her mental and physical strength. As we wrap up, we contemplate the paradoxical relationship between joy and sadness and the adaptability that is carved from life's hurdles. Urmi's journey from Palermo to Montreal exemplifies the transformative process that many of us navigate, reminding us that the essence of our shared human experience is as unpredictable as it is beautiful. Urmi Hossain grew up in the cities of Palermo, Vigevano, and Milan, Italy. Her family moved to London for one year before moving back to Italy where they then settled in Milan. She then moved to Montreal, Canada to pursue an undergraduate degree in finance. Upon completion, she stayed in Montreal to begin her career and still resides there. In her book, Discovering Your Identity, a Rebirth from Interracial Struggle, Urmi expounds on the reality of being a “third culture kid.” Being a mix of Italian and Bengali culture, Urmi has struggled to find which nationality she identifies with.Growing up in Italy, Urmi has always felt more Italian than Bengali as she considers Italy as “home.” Despite London having a large community of Italians and Bengalis, to her, it never quite felt like home. On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Urmi Hossain, an investment associate based in Canada with the goal of becoming a portfolio manager. Urmi is a CFA, or a Chartered Financial Analyst. CFA is a globally recognized professional designation that measures and certifies the competence and integrity of financial analysts. Candidates are required to pass three levels of exams covering areas, such as accounting, economics, ethics, money management, and security analysis. Working in financial services can offer a lot in terms of compensation and benefits and upward potential. We also talk about the challenge of finding that first job out of school and how disheartening it can be struggling to get your foot in the door somewhere, even when you have all of the qualifications on every posting. So if you're there now, just know you're not alone. My best advice for that stage of your career is to keep a number of strong applications open at once, don't stop looking and applying until you've actually started a job. Hiring for salaried, professional jobs can take months of stops and starts, so if you have a lot of irons in the fire at once, it's not so disappointing if one falls through. In this episode, I share a fascinating and wonderful chat I had with Urmi Hossain, a polyglot, author, YouTuber, and a woman empowering and inspiring others. Urmi shares her history of language learning, which began in childhood as she grew up in Italy with Bengali heritage. She tells of growing up in Sicily, speaking Bengali at home and Italian in the community and how she often felt in between worlds, neither fully Italian nor fully Bengali. Urmi takes us through her path toward realization that she doesn't have to choose between cultures and which one she identifies with, and that, in fact, she is of both – Italian by birth and Bengali by blood. In this chat, we get to hear about Urmi's journey through other languages, as well, about the challenges she faced moving to Montreal as a French speaker, and about her passion for Spanish. You will hear the love for Spanish in her voice as she takes us through her travel experiences in Mexico and the Dominican Republic! It was such a pleasure to have this chat with Urmi and be given the honor of hearing her personal story of self- and cultural identity and the role languages have played in that. I hope you enjoy her stories as much as I did, and make sure you check out her work linked below. When she graduated, she continued to focus on Finance and enrolled in the CFA program, where she is now working toward Level 3 certification. Personal storytelling can be used to improve language skills. Interview with Fabio Cerpelloni. On the previous episode 121, we learned from Lucia that we can learn through listening to other personal stories. "Everyone has a story to tell". On this episode (122) it's all about telling your own stories in order to improve in your target language. Even though Fabio Cerpelloni's personal language learning journey did not involve storytelling, he fell in love with telling stories from his own life and has even started to integrate it in his teachings. The book "Story Worthy" by Matthew Dicks inspired Fabio's podcast (Stolaroid Stories) and focus on personal storytelling. Best stories are about failure and can impact others. Fabio is currently writing a book about his personal journey of learning English and how to learn the language in an organic way. We hope that we can have him on My Fluent Podcast for a second round so that we can learn more about his inspiring journey. Thank you Fabio! What are you waiting for? In this episode I'm joined by Urmi Hossain. Urmi is a proponent of self-development and continuous learning. She's also an author. She was born and raised in Italy by Bengali parents, who wanted her to be the typical Bengali girl: obedient and perfect for the community. In her book called "Discovering Your Identity: A Rebirth From Interracial Struggle", she narrates what she had to go through in her childhood. She does this through reflections and confessions about what it felt like growing up in a household that wanted her to be someone she didn't want to be. She's also a polyglot as she speaks 4 languages: Bengali, Italian, English and French. You'll hear us talk about: Her book How she learned English Fear of being judged Fear of making language mistakes How to be confident in speaking a second language The transcript of this episode is available here - https://fabiocerpelloni.gumroad.com/l/urmi If you'd like to support the show, then you could do one of these things: Write a review on Podchaser - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXgdVIAWuio&feature=youtu.be Tell a friend about the show Subscribe to Stolaroid Stories Share it on social media / WhatsApp / Telegram Leave a review on Apple Podcast Rate it on Spotify Thank you! Who am I? That's a question that can plague nearly anyone on the planet. You know your name, where you come from, and what you do day to day. But have you done an inventory of your history and life experiences to see what made you? My guest today is Urmi Hossain. Urmi currently works as in the financial services industry of Canada. But before that she was just a Bengali girl growing up in Italy and wondering which cultural norms she was supposed to be emulating. What things were true to her? And what things were just expected? It was a journey through life which took her several decades and moving across the world to figure out. She's written a book and now speaks publicly on the importance of discovering who you are for your own sake. It's something any of us should take the time to at least think about, even if you think your the most vanilla person in the world. Vanilla is still it's own flavor no matter what mint chocolate chip might say. Please take a brief moment to rate the show five stars on iTunes, Spotify, or Audible. When you are talking to someone about their values and approach to life and the phrase "global domination" comes up, you know you are in for an interesting conversation. Urmi is Bengali by blood and Italian by birth and spent much of her life trying to figure out where she fit into these two different worlds. She never felt quite Italian "enough" and at the same time she struggled to fit into the strict and rigid Bengali culture she was raised in. This resulted in her never feeling good enough or living up to the expectations that were set for her. Fast forward to her current life though and Urmi has embraced who she really is and is comfortable being uniquely herself. This transformation has led her to strong ambitions about the things she wants to achieve, in her career, volunteer work, professional brand, and the overall impact she makes on the world. As she put it, she wants her face to be everywhere and achieve that "global domination" I mentioned earlier. As you might imagine we spent a good bit of time talking about that phrase and understanding it more. How much ego is involved, what is behind the desire to become so influential, and how does it reconcile with her most important value: "friendship"? I say it often, but these are the conversations I am after; talking to people who have a very deliberate view on what they want from life and are unapologetic about going after it. It was really interesting to hear Urmi explain her ambitions and pressure test the root "why" underneath it all. In some ways it was very relatable to things I grapple with. I want to be a good person, who helps others, and prioritizes those closest to me, but at the same time I want to achieve great things and be recognized for it. Does that make me a hypocrite or egotistical; or does it just make me human? I don't know, but it was really interesting to Urmi's take on it all.
