Hello music fans! Thank you for joining me for episode 23. We have a first of sorts this time out…a return visit from a BOTR alumnus. Josh Gillespie joined me in April of 2023 to discuss his solo project. This time around, Josh has put together a band and now we are joined by Josh Gillespie and The Nomad Collective. The band is:Josh Gillespie - Lead vocal, rhythm guitarCarl Hartmann - Lead and rhythm guitars, backing vocalsSteve Martz - Bass, backing vocalTim Birkel - DrumsThey have a new EP set for release on May 8th entitled The Camera: Dear Exile Part 1. The night before on May 7th, they have a CD release show at the Melody Inn in Indianapolis…so if you are in the Indy area, be sure to catch that show at that historic venue. The Camera EP is a thematic collection that examines authenticity, deception, and moral compromise in modern life — targeting media figures, public personas, and individuals who trade their integrity for power, fame, or approval. This collection has well crafted songs with good energy and great playing. The guys brought their gear with them and after we wrapped up our conversation, they played a couple of the new tracks. So be sure to check those out!Songs: "Urgency of Now" 55:25; "Soul for Sale" 59:30You can follow the band on facebook and instagram at @joshgillespiemusic and also on Bandcamp and YouTube Thanks again for spending time checking out the podcast! Before becoming a rock ‘n' roll frontman, Michael Des Barres was making his mark on screen—starring alongside Sidney Poitier in the 1967 classic To Sir, With Love. But it wasn't long before he traded the film set for the stage, forming glam rock outfit Silverhead in the early '70s before moving on to Detective, one of the few bands signed to Led Zeppelin's legendary Swan Song label. Hanging with Page, Plant, and Bonham was all part of the ride. In this episode of My Rock Moment, Michael shares his wild journey through music and acting—from those early days in London to writing one of the biggest songs of the 80s, to stepping in with The Power Station just days before Live Aid, and later, his unforgettable run as Murdoc on MacGyver. We also talk about his time with Pamela Des Barres, his show on Little Steven's Underground Garage, and the wise advice Sidney Poitier gave him early on. Michael Des Barres has lived a life where Hollywood and rock 'n roll collide—and he's got the stories to prove it. On this episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Tony Mantor. Tony has been working in the music industry in Nashville for more than 30 years, and is an established singer-songwriter, pianist, podcast host and record-charting music producer. We cover a lot of different components of working in the music industry, like how streaming has changed the industry for musicians and songwriters, the decision to focus on production and management rather than continuing to focus solely on his career as an artist, and the resiliency needed to succeed in this career. Last week, I brought another lens on the music industry, when I interviewed Kiara Laetitia, a Rock Singer, Manager and Coach. If you're missed that one, and you've ever been curious about life working in the music industry, be sure to check out that episode too. Greetings & Salutations, Slackers! This week is about failure. Or more specifically, my failure to make my earliest dreams come true - to be the lead singer in a rock band.Of course I was technically the lead singer in many bands, but my childhood dream was to sing professionally. After a particularly piss poor showing during a recording session with legendary producer Kramer - of @ShimmyDisc Records fame - I all but gave up on that dream. With the exception of a few self produced demos, I moved away from music and let the dream die.Now here I am in middle age wondering what kind of example does that set for my kids? I mean, if I could say with reasonable confidence I gave it my all and still didn't “make it”, then I think that would serve as a fine example - but quitting the first time I face any adversity - ridiculous. Can I redeem myself? Is it ever too late to conquer a fear, or to accomplish a long held goal? Is this a mid - midlife crisis?!Oh, and I share with you all how I almost cut my finger off with a chainsaw!

Who are the Salafis, and what are the roots of Salafism? What does it even mean to be Salafi? Why is Salafism concerned with ethics of visibility and bodily regulation? Why, when, and how did Salafism become significant? In his latest book, In the Shade of the Sunnah: Salafi Piety in the 20th Century Middle East (University of California Press, 2022), Aaron Rock-Singer explores these questions and many more about Salafism. Rock-Singer situates Salafism as a movement whose core logic is shaped by questions that emerge distinctly during modernity even though the movement derives its claims to legitimacy from claims to continuity with early Islamic history. In other words, Salafism is a distinctly modern project that is not rooted in the Islamic legal, textual, or ethical tradition, given that many Salafi practices aren't rooted in Islamic texts. As a result, Salafis finds themselves in a challenging textual position when seeking religious, textual justification for some practices, such as gender segregation or not praying in shoes. How, then, does Salafism legitimate and ground itself? How is their claim to authenticity premised on continuity with the Islamic seventh century? To answer these questions, Rock-Singer takes a few specific issues, such as gender segregation, beards, the length of the robe or pants, as potent ideological sites that are connected in significant ways to Salafism's project to regulate social space. These issues were not applied in the early 20th century or prior but became significant in the mid to late 20th century in a specific social and political context. So, for instance, the beard matters not just because it's an attempt to emulate the Prophet Muhammad but because it's a visual way of identifying the commitment to emulating Muhammad, to make clear who a Salafi is. In our discussion today, Aaron talks about the origins of this book, its major contributions and findings, the roots of Salafism, its ideas of worship and tawhid (i.e., oneness of God), Salafism's textual and political challenges, the significance of the regulation of social space, questions of authenticity and continuity, and the issues of beards, praying in shoes, gender segregation, and the length of one's robe according to Salafi practice. Shehnaz Haqqani is an Assistant Professor of Religion at Mercer University. She earned her PhD in Islamic Studies with a focus on gender from the University of Texas at Austin in 2018. Her dissertation research explored questions of change and tradition, specifically in the context of gender and sexuality, in Islam. She can be reached at haqqani_s@mercer.edu. "Canyons And Waves" New Released Album From Roots-Rock Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist#griffpeters #newmusic #singer #songwriter #guitarist Nature has always been spiritually grounding for singer-songwriter and guitarist Griff Peters. A few years ago, when the San Diego, California-based roots rock artist was mired in a heart-wrenching personal struggle, he went out to the beach and sat down on a rock formation. There, Griff asked himself this question: if he was told he had a year to live, what would he do?The answer was simple—make his solo debut, Canyons and Waves (Impropriety Records), a deep and sincere body of work crafted by a skilled and experienced artist with a worthy message of hope within darkness. A Place For My Stuff - Yes I have/had another podcast. A couple of podcasts actually. With the rising price of everything, I opted not to pay to have Inside the Guest Studio available forever. I have this convenient landing spot called My Alien Life Podcast which WILL remain forever - thus, this is part of my life, as will be the episodes of Inside the Guest Studio. A podcast that is graced by some unique and very talented people that live slightly off the grid. Enjoy Cameron Inside the Guest Studio - With Cam Logan and Carmaig de Forest My guest tonight joins a short list of rockers who embraced the ukulele and made it cool. The ukulele that almost became a dorm room decoration in 1978 became his signature sound and formed his many, brilliant punk-leaning songs about love and politics. Camaig de Forest crafted a career out of his passion for music at the University of California Santa Cruz. He studied theatre with his sights set on acting and directing. While in college, he plucked the ukulele off the wall and started writing songs. In 1982 he moved to Los Angeles and started his career as a solo artist. His ability to gather a devoted audience with his amalgam of performance energy and clever songwriting earned him the honor of sharing the bill with Violent Femmes, They Might Be Giants, and the Ramones.

With well over 80 albums to his credit, Bill has had a a great deal of lived experience, much of which is shared in our conversation. Over the past few years, there has been much adverse press about touring singers suffering vocal fold pathologies; for example, in 2018 the pop icon Pink had to cancel a number of concerts in Australia due to illness. She was confronted with sensationalist media criticism and how can we forget all the negative press and public outcry over Adele's vocal pathologies. I am embarrassed to say that there has also been many negative claims from the singing voice community regarding these vocal injuries, blaming the singers themselves for voice misuse and lack of training and technique. Aside from this school of thought, there are others in our singing voice community who continue to amplify the misconception that singing popular music styles, or what we call CCM, can be detrimental to a singer's vocal health and longevity. I have sat on the sidelines, but in this episode, I replay an interview I did recently with Dr Jenevora Williams, where I was a guest on the podcast, The Thinking Voice. I was asked to share my own personal and professional experiences as a lead singer in a touring rock band and how these experiences, many of which were forced upon me, ultimately lead to my demise vocally, financially, physically, emotionally and mentally. I speak candidly about how I was treated as a commodity, the bullying and the shaming I experienced, the unrealistic expectations from managements, the gruelling lifestyle on the road, and sexual harassment. This was a raw, emotional and difficult conversation with Jenevora, but I am grateful to have the opportunity to finally share this part of my life that I had locked away and never spoken about. These experiences had a deep impact on me but strangely enough these experiences have shaped who I am today, who I am as a voice educator and they influence my every day teaching approaches especially when working with emerging artists. This has made me far more empathetic with aspiring and professional vocalists, given me a great understanding of the workings and demands of the music industry. My message here is to managements to stop treating artists as commodities, and for the voice community to stop shaming singers who experience vocal pathologies. It's time to be accountable and leave our biases at the door. The Thinking Voice podcasts are part of Vocal Health Education.
