My guest today is Dr. Chanel Mitchell aka Chanel Tsunami from St. Louis, MO. Chanel is many things but labels herself as a disruptor. As a member of The Regulators Cycling Club and ambassador for Ride For Racial Justice, Chanel is continuously finding ways to disrupt the norm, create sustaining change, and provide more opportunities for BIPOC cyclists. As a plus-sized woman, Chanel has also proven that the cycling community welcomes everyone no matter your race, gender identity, or body style.Aiding Chanel in her quest for disruption is the fact that she also possesses her Doctorate in Philosophy in Social Work as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Behavioral Therapist, and Adjunct Professor. Not only is Chanel healing her community as a professional but she's finding ways to do it from the saddle of her bike.In this conversation Chanel and I cover the early days of her discovering and riding a bike, the intersection between life as a LCSW and her involvement in cycling, how Chanel serves as an agent of change for marginalized groups of people, and finally we talk about Chanel's plans for an exciting 2024 season.

On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Sarah, a nanny family assistant. You might also know Sarah as the Modern Nanny, her popular social media account that provides community for people in this typically coworker-less industry in information for employers and parents. If you're interested in the caregiving field, working as a Nanny if you find the right employers offers a ton of benefits. Many different schedule options, more freedom, often better pay, and the ability to focus on fewer children often for longer periods of time, which can create a deeper bond.Of course, as we talk about in the episode, there are many challenges with any kind of domestic work. The roots of this issue run deep: from the Domestic Workers Alliance website:  "During the 1930s, landmark New Deal legislation introduced basic workplace rights in the U.S., but domestic and farm workers were excluded due to a compromise with Southern legislators. The exclusion of domestic workers from workplace laws passed in subsequent years became the norm, and these racist and sexist exclusions continue to exist in local, state and federal laws in the U.S."This has led to domestic workers being among the most vulnerable and exploited workers in the labor force. They often face long work hours, low pay, sudden job loss, sexual harassment, and physical or verbal abuse.Despite being one of the fastest growing workforces in the nation, nannies, housecleaners and home care workers work in isolation, face challenges in negotiating for better working conditions, and have little to no recourse or ability to enforce the basic rights they have when violated.” As you'll see if you follow Sarah, she's one of many working to improve these issues, you can even find her twice a year census of her followers to improve pay transparency in this field. I interviewed the owner and operator of an in-home, licensed, accredited childcare two weeks ago, so if you didn't listen to that episode, it would be a great pairing if you're considering this general field. This is also a great example of how so many people's career's progress in ways you might not expect. You start off in one field, in Sarah's case as a Behavioral Therapist, see how a different role might actually suit your needs better and then move there, and with even more experience, identify a need in your industry that you can fill, even if it takes you into a pretty different job function. If you're interested in following Sarah, you can find her on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook @the.modern.nannyIf you like the show, please rate and review on iTunes and Spotify  (linked below) and please share with a friend! Nicole David had aBrutal childhood at the hands of a mentally ill parent. Still she managed to scrap her way into a respectable career in the legal vertical and with Silicon Valley Corporate. At 52 Nicole realized that if she didn't leave Corporate America, she would likely end her life. It was a sobering realization, but Nicole knew she couldn't go on the same way she always had. Nicole floundered for a few years while trying to "find herself" but landed on working with kids as a behavior therapist. Nicole quickly realized that the 1:1 connection was gratifying, but she knew she could do more. Nicole decided to launch a nonprofit that introduces young people (those not destined for college) to the trades. The program focuses first on "Life Mastery" (communication, emotional regulation, financial literacy, etc.) and then on the trades. In our first year, we enjoyed a 71% placement rate of our graduates. Our students age 18-24 are locking in career starting positions making between $50K-$70K/yr to start. Hear the amazing story of two high school sweethearts, Patrick and Wendy Reilly who not only seemed destined to be together, but somehow destined to be in business together as well. Though you wouldn't have thought so if you watched the first 30 years of their life unfold as they got married in 1992 and started raising a family. As Wendy began work as a Behavioral Therapist and got her Masters in Special Ed. While her husband Patrick started down a long path as an engineer for Comcast. But all that changed in 2017 during a family trip to Bar Harbor, Maine. When Patrick (who'd developed a bad back from too many injuries on his job) stumbled into a Pedego EBike store and discovered that (for the first time) he could join Wendy on her long hikes with their boys. Enthralled with the fun they had that day, they went back home and began imagining "what if WE opened a store back in New Jersey"?  Going so far as to actually contact Pedego and explore the idea. But careers and kids kept getting in the way.  Then COVID came and changed everything. Stuck at home in 2020, they drove to the Pedego store in Spring Lake, NJ and bought two bikes to celebrate their 28th wedding anniversary  And then destiny stepped in and altered the course of their lives (or maybe corrected the course to where they were always meant to be).  Because shortly after buying the bikes, Patrick had a question and decided to call the local store, but instead dialed the Pedego corporate HQ in CA by mistake.  Even more miraculously, they remembered him and said "hey, if you're still interested in opening a store, we're looking for someone in Haddenfield" (where they lived)". And thus began this new leg of their journey together that finds them not with just one store but two (with a second location in  Princeton, NJ as well).  Where they are working with that famed University to possibly purchase a whole pack of Pedegos for faculty and staff to pedal around campus. With all three of their sons now working with them as well. Whatever you call this strange twist of fate, it sure seems like something that was somehow meant to be. As the family that first rode together is now blazing a new trail together. As accidental Electric Bike Entrepreneurs driving the EBike Revolution. On this week's PEDEGO PODCAST.

This week…The Justice for Gerard Movement welcomes back' "Mr. Edward Sanders".... our guest speaker. Topic: "Transforming the County Jail System." What can be done to change the County jail experience that will be beneficial and transformative to those being held there. The criminal justice system employs state‐ sanctioned violence to discourage and punish conduct that threatens the very fabric of civil society. Most people in county jail have not been sentence, they are possibly awaiting their day in court. Many that get locked up in local jails charges are dropped or case get dismissed. Not everyone goes to Prison, yet from the moment you enter the local jail you are treated as if you are in prison. Transformation of the County Jail System is envisioning a humane, equitable approach to criminal justice process that prioritizes prevention and care, and reimagines accountability through a rehabilitative lens, too create safe and thriving communities. "We have a system of justice in [the US] that treats you much better if you're rich and guilty than if you're poor and innocent. Wealth, not culpability, shapes outcomes." -Bryan Stevenson- We have been sold a bill of goods when it comes to the way the criminal justice system addresses “crime,” and so many things that pull people into that system are minor and could often be viewed as not criminal at all. -Jessica Henry- Associate Professor at the Department of Justice Studies at Montclair State University While police get must of the blame when discussing Injustices within the Criminal Justice System. Once arrested, the case goes to the prosecutor, who then has the ability to decide whether or not to pursue the case. Most prosecutors don't use that discretion. Instead, they rely on whatever the police claim is the case. Because of the prevalence of plea bargaining, that can make the police the arbiters of both who gets arrested and who gets convicted. If everyone is pleading guilty, then the prosecutors are not doing their jobs and screening cases, then whatever the police say often stands. That's a huge problem. You also have a prosecutorial mentality that prioritizes gaining convictions as the win, as opposed to seeking justice; and prosecutors will take all kinds of measures to secure those convictions. You have public defenders that are often drowning in caseloads, then there are some criminal defense lawyers who don't do their jobs well, and poor defendants are stuck with whoever gets assigned to them. Again and again, we see the criminal justice system reinforcing divisions that come from poverty. We can go to look at pretrial detention and bail reform, and we can't forget the Judges… This week on Turning A Moment Into A Movement….. In policing, people often talk about bad apples. Well, bad apples come from rotten trees, and the rotten trees are law enforcement agencies imbued with structural racism. Standard processes for holding police officers accountable, issuing civil payouts to victims of brutality, and rehiring fired officers are a few of the factors that contribute to the entrenchment of racism and police brutality. Police officers should be accountable public servants who work collaboratively, transparently, and fairly with all of the communities they serve. Too often, they have not been held accountable. This lack of accountability has eroded community trust and fostered suspicion and resentment. In order to restore police legitimacy, there should be structures in place to promote responsible, accountable policing and measures to ensure that police are held accountable for their actions when they deviate from that standard. The Justice for Gerard Movement presents, "Turning A Moment Into A Movement" Join us as Ms. Alexandria Hughes, (Behavioral Therapist, Advisory Council for Mi Rep Kyra H Bolden, Justice Advocate, MI Liberation, and Accountability for Dearborn) .....will leds the community conversation about "Oversight and Accountability"...Defining What is Police Accountability, what we can do to make it happen? The Justice for Gerard Movement presents .... TURNING A MOMENT INTO A MOVEMENT! Confirmation Bias, coupled with tunnel vision and a rush to judgment, switches a case from an evidence-based investigation into a suspect-based one, in an effort to solve the case. When detectives and prosecutors think they've invested too much into a case to even consider the possibility that they may be wrong…even solid evidence that the suspect may not be the right guy gets discredited or outright ignored in order to not upset the momentum of closing the case. Faulty assumptions by law enforcement officers and prosecutors while trying to prove themselves right infected everything else that happened in the case, from what evidence got admitted to what witnesses were called or not called. Therefore on Friday, The Justice for Gerard Movement will explore how Confirmation Biases causes Wrongful Convictions. So join us, along with Attorney Hugo Mack, Trischè Duckworth Founder of Survivors Speak, Rev Tia Littlejohn Life Coach & Behavioral Therapist, Ally Hughes of Mi Liberation & Dearborn Accountability and Edward Barakah Sanders, Paralegal, Social Worker, and our new panelist Mr Art Been, along with our special guest Beth Bailey of Accountability Dearborn hosted by Jay Love... The Justice for Gerard Movement presents .... TURNING A MOMENT INTO A MOVEMENT! Junk Science, Forensic Fraud and Wrongful Convictions wk 4 Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is flawed.... It was popularized in the early 2000s, it has never been scientifically validated. Medical experts now know that their belief in how to diagnose a clear sign of child abuse based upon a determination of shaken baby syndrome was mistaken. This new understanding may cast doubt on hundreds of murder, assault, and child abuse convictions. Over the past two decades, newer scientific research has proven that accidents, diseases, and genetic conditions can cause the damning triad and other symptoms associated with shaken baby syndrome. Between 1990 and 2000 there were more than 200 convictions based on Shaken Baby Syndrome.” ...and from 2001 to 2015 there were 1,600 convictions according to a study conducted by The Washington Post. Only 16 people have been exonerated for assault or murder involving SBS according to the National Registry of Exonerations. We must eliminate the Innocent going to prison...... Get ready for a giant ear boner this week, as ASMR Maddy gives us the most smoothing and sensual experience. Maddy has thousands of dedicated fans that tune in to relax, and your ears won’t be the only thing that ends up having a crush on this babe. Maddy talks about her background in psychology, what exactly ASMR is and how she got into it, and then Bunnie joins her for some super hot and (and kind of silly of course) whisper action.  Key Takeaways:  ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. It is a tingling sensation that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the neck and spine. In non scientific terms, it’s when you hear a hot chick like Maddy working her mouth magic and feel all tingly and good inside.  Maddy found ASMR herself when she was dealing with anxiety, and now has over a hundred thousand fans on her YouTube and OnlyFans.  Maddy also has a background in psychology and worked as a Behavioral Therapist.  It’s all about finding the right ASMR for you. Just like a kink or fetish, it’s cool to be into whatever gets you going, and chances are there is a space already there for it on the internet.    Quotes:  “There is nothing better than putting things out that make people feel good.” - Maddy  “When I listen, I don’t know whether I want to go to sleep or wack off.” - Bunnie  Bunnie: www.dumbblondeunrated.com ASMR Maddy Instagram | YouTube | OnlyFans
