It's back to school season for those of us in the US! That's why my guest this week is someone who works alongside our kids in the school system every day! But first, a story. A couple years ago, I saw a social media post from this dude who is a therapist and teaches social skills to ADHD boys. It said something like: Why would you trust a middle-aged woman to teach your teenage boy with ADHD social skills?? Now I know this post had nothing to do with me (I mean, I'm not even middle-aged!) but I actually found it humorous. Here's this dude who is neurotypical, thinking he's in a better position to teach social skills to neurodivergent kids and teens than someone who has LIVED EXPERIENCE! How many situations do you find yourself in where you think the best person to learn something (anything!) from is someone who has NO personal experience in that area? A realtor who has never bought or sold their own house? Someone who teaches people to make money with a side hustle, but has never had a side hustle? Someone who teaches piano lessons, but doesn't know how to play the piano?? Alright, you get the idea. I'm just a girl who has ADHD standing in front of you wanting to help your child. Is that how that quote goes?? My guest on the podcast this week is Michelle Steiner, a disability advocate, speaker, and a paraprofessional in a middle school who has a learning disability. In other words, she's another person out in the world teaching our kids because she gets it. She has been there, done that. Here's a clip from the episode: A lot of times, we'll have parents that are advocating for their child, and that's definitely very important for a parent's voice. My parents didn't give up on me and they advocated for me until I could advocate for myself. But I think we really need to have kids beginning starting to advocate for themselves at an early age. A lot of these a lot of the students I work with, their disability is going to continue well on after adulthood, it's going to go with them for the rest of their lives. And I think the earlier we start getting them to be able to speak up for themselves, the more we're going to serve them, and better prepare them for their future. PS. Did you know I also teach people how to start a social club in their community? Because, you know, I have 7 years of experience doing that! If this sounds like something you are interested in learning more about, you can join the waiting list at Start Your Own Club Waitlist (starfishsocialclub.org) I'm glad you are here! Michelle Steiner is a Learning disability advocate, writer, and para educator.
On this episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Michelle Steiner, a para educator, disability writer and advocate. Michelle has a degree, but you don't always need one to work as a paraeducator, so it can be a great opportunity to make an impact right away without a degree and with many of the benefits that come from working in a school system. As you'll hear from Michelle, people with learning disabilities can face many challenges on the path to find employment. It's important to note that people with disabilities are protected under the American Disabilities act, passed only in 1990, that prohibits discrimination in employment and requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities. From the Learning Disabilities Association of America, "people with LD possess average or above average intelligence levels, and often have varying areas of ability, or “a weakness within a sea of strengths.” They tend to be creative, persistent, loyal, and good problem-solvers, often achieving a high degree of success in the workplace when the disability is accommodated and their strengths are utilized to the fullest." Happily many employers are proactively working toward true disability inclusion Disability:IN ranks employers each year based on their level of disability inclusion. You can read more of Michelle's work on her blog, Michelle's mission. Michelle was diagnosed with a learning disability in kindergarten. In high school, she was told by her counselors that she couldn't handle college due to her disability. However, Michelle advocated for herself and successfully achieved her Associates Degree in early childhood education. When she expressed interest in achieving a bachelors degree, many doubters, including her psychiatrist, told her that it would be impossible. Instead of listening to the naysayers, Michelle pushed forward, defied odds, and ultimately received her bachelors degree. Michelle is now a writer, advocate, paraeducator and gifted photographer. On today's episode, Michelle shares her courageous story and her compassion-filled mission, “To Educate, Empower and Encourage People With and Without Disabilities” Discover more about Michelle's Mission, blog, photography and much more at: https://www.michellesmission.net/ Explore lots of additional free resources to help you Manifest the Greatness That You Already Possess Deep Inside at https://manifestyourgreatness.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/curtis-j-washington/support

My guest, Michelle Steiner, defies the limitations and stigma associated with having a learning disability. She has overcome challenges in math, visual perception, and hand dexterity by embracing her unique brain wiring. Michelle highlights that the real struggle lies in societal misconceptions rather than the disability itself.Growing up in a conservative rural community, Michelle faced rejection and a lack of acceptance due to her differences. She struggled to fit in socially and academically, facing challenges with both learning support and neurotypical peers. Despite low expectations, Michelle pursued higher education, defying suggestions to attend a trade school.Through community college and a university program in special education services, Michelle graduated with determination, aided by disability accommodations like extended test time and note-taking assistance. Today, as a paraeducator, she supports students with disabilities, encouraging self-advocacy and empowerment.Michelle's story inspires others to break free from predetermined boxes, promoting creative problem-solving and embracing a fulfilling life beyond societal expectations.Michelle's Mission – To educate, encourage and empower people on Learning Disabilities. Michelle Steiner's blog, Michelle's Mission is a way for her to share stories about her disabilities and her nature photography. From a young age it was clear that she had difficulties with math and needed support for her learning disability which was later diagnosed as dyscalculia. Gym class also brought forth her visual impairment issues with perception, such that her sight is good, but her brain can't properly process all visuals. Later on during Michelle's continuing education was when she was diagnosed with limited hand dexterity. Can a human being really be broken? I mean, how can we be broken when all our parts seem to be together? Sometimes it's hard to look at someone and see it, but there are many people walking around who don't have it as together as we think. But sometimes, we can find true beauty in even the broken things. Today on the podcast, Tony Wechsler and Michelle Steiner are going to discuss “making broken pieces beautiful.” On this episode, Michelle tells her story about overcoming a learning disability and living a truly beautiful life. Michelle was ostracized by her peers and held back in kindergarten. She struggled with learning, understanding, physical coordination and social interaction. Luckily, she was diagnosed with learning differences and got lots of needed support. But that didn't stop kids and others from treating her as dumb, and she internalized that identity. And, ambition didn't let her stop chasing her dreams. Hear how Michelle learned how to compensate with a disability. Find out how she moved away from believing she was equivalent to how she was perceived and treated to land in a place of self-love and acceptance. What were the needle movers? And, how does she deal with not being the person she might have been, if she didn't have this condition? Guest Bio Michelle Steiner lives with an invisible disability.
