00:41 - And we back, and we back, and still black! Can you believe that it’s the last episode of Season 3? We have a unique recording setup for this final episode - watch out on social media to see Monique’s temporary studio. 2:35 - But first, what are we sippin’ on? Of course Meek has the Meka Special, peach tranquility tea with citrus mint and a hint of agave. Because she’s at home, Nique made a nice matcha green tea latte with Oatly oat milk and a splash of agave. 4:15 - Let’s talk about the season and how we got here, at the end, through all that this year and COVID has brought, the good and the challenging. Meek and Nique reflect on how the podcast started and how the community of moms has grown so much. You all inspire us and motivate us to keep going! 8:23 - This is such a reboot season, it’s comforting to revisit things that we love. Did you have a favorite episode this season that you’re re-listening to? We’ve been watching all the reboots and black comfort TV shows, getting nostalgic about the good memories those bring back. What are you watching or revisiting in your reboot season? 11:28 - Meka reviews one of her favorite episodes from this season - navigating virtual school! The adventures of school-at-home are on-going, but these offer us life lessons and teachable moments that are important for our kids to learn. 14:33 - Nique shares her experiences of having her children learning at home in a new city, wrestling with the idea of whether or not to bring the kids back to in-person school, and finding that their new routine is working so well for their family. 19:18 - Meek talks about working to find the best ways for Jagger to learn and excel in the world, to give him the tools and resources to serve his needs and watch him grow. It can be a challenge, but it’s so worth it to put our energy into our children in the ways that they need to really allow them to flourish. 23:02 - Another favorite of Nique’s is the How Are You, Really? episode. Being honest about where you are, how you’re feeling, being vulnerable, and showing that not everything is always picture-perfect is refreshing and freeing, because we don’t always have it together. We have to hold space for ourselves and others to feel how they’re actually feeling. 29:25 - A theme of this season has been “leveling up.” Meek is leveling up by taking on the #75hardchallenge and she extends that challenge to everyone else to keep working at it. Nique’s leveling up is in the form of her Peloton 100, a challenge that she made up for herself! She’s leveling up her health by being more intentional about good food, a healthy home, she completed a yoga teacher training…. She’s learning some things and doing some things! 35:34 - So, what are our Roll Out Tracks? Meka chooses Level Up by Ciara because it’s so on theme. Monique goes with Open Door Season by Dietrick Haddon, a super fun song that speaks to opportunities and leveling up in the next season. Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on their socials! Meka’s blog is Hanging with the Harrells and her instagram is @xomekaharrell.Nique’s website is Monique Hibma and follow her @moniqueimanhibma.Follow the show at @teawithmeekandnique on Insta to see behind-the-scenes and more content, make sure to use the #teawithmeekandnique so we can see what you’re sipping on, and say hello to your fearless hosts at meekandnique.com, and tune in for the next episode!
00:40 - Welcome back! Today we’re talking about friendships, strong women, supporting each other, and how important it is! 2:15 - But first, what is in your cup? Of course, Meka is having the Meka Classic, her peach, ginger, mint, with a hint of agave. Monique has a delicious South African mango rooibos. So sit with us and sip your tea while we chat. 3:22 - So, we gotta talk about friends. Meek tells us about her tribe, her girls that have been with her for decades, and reflects on how their relationships have grown from their college days until now. 5:38 - Monique explains the love of long-term, childhood friendships, but also the importance of holding space within ourselves to invite others (and be invited) into new friendships in our adult years. Meek and Nique met in their young adult years - there’s always good in meeting new people and having new friends! 8:15 - True friendship looks like fruitful relationships and people who inspire you. Those who you can Facetime in Covid, who can see you in your sweats and being real. 11:33 - We sidebar for a minute, our experiences as black women are so important. Remember to use your words, recognize people and the space we take up, and offer respect. See black people, respect our space, see us. Having friends that affirm you and your experiences are needed so we can digest these together, without judgement, so it doesn’t make us go insane! 14:00 - Representation in your friend group and in your experiences is so important so we can relate to each other, support each other, and be intentional in what we do, how we behave, and how we treat others. Pouring into each other means we are filling ourselves up too - friendship is a two-way street and we have to meet each other where we’re at. 18:00 - Who pushes you to grow? The friendships that Meka and Monique appreciate the most are those from women who pray for them, uplift them, challenge them to grow and change, who celebrate their successes and who do better with them. Those who want you to stay the same may end up being toxic, holding you back from being the best you can be. Cheer your friends on and let them feel your support and love! 23:23 - Meka shares a few tips on how to be intentional with your friends. First, check in with them - like really check in to make sure they’re okay, don’t just like their Insta. Second, know what your friends’ love language is! Learn how to support them in the way that they value the most. 25:00 - Meek says another tip is to support your mama friends by also taking care of their kids. Give the mamas a break to take care of themselves, run errands, do a date night, or engage with the kids in a creative way to give the parents a break while building bonds.27:00 - Most importantly, friendships are two-sided, so remember to check the balance. Sometimes the scales will teeter to one person or another in our times of need, but the investments in each other and our relationships are critical to our own health and happiness. Finding your people, especially as an adult, is so special. 28:25 - We gotta bring it home with our Drive Tracks! We’re listening to What About Your Friends by TLC and More Than Anything by Sunday Service Choir, because we still got Jesus when all our friends are gone. Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on their socials! Meka’s blog is Hanging with the Harrells and her instagram is @xomekaharrell.Nique’s website is Monique Hibma and follow her @moniqueimanhibma. 00:40 - And we back! We are on top of it today - we are starting with what we’re sipping on. Meek has her Meka Classic, her peach, mint, and ginger, while Nique has got her trusty citrus mint. 4:05 - Today, we are talking about all things four-legged, our furry best friends, we’re talking dog moms today. If you have furbabies, this episode is for you! Monique starts off with her story of how she is dog-mom-adjacent. She is a surrogate dog mama, loving and supporting her pups from afar, but it’s just not a perfect fit up close. 7:05 - Meka has a bernedoodle named Marley, her super smart, not shedding, huge furbaby. Marley is a big, gentle baby, even though she is larger than Elle and almost as tall as Meka when she’s on her hind legs! Marley and Axel especially have a sweet relationship, because they grew up together. 10:40 - Nique talks about Onyx, her pup living with her in-laws. Onyx is a mini Australian labradoodle who fits in perfectly with her in-laws because he’s a great connection point for the family to talk over! 12:04 - Meek points out that having a dog is great, but can be inconvenient for when we’re able to travel again… but this is where Nique shines as a dog auntie and she is down to babysit. Although, Meka breaks the news that they’re welcoming another furry addition to the family, and she’s encouraging other families to welcome bernedoodles into their homes too! 14:47 - Meka needs your help, listeners - who else has two big dogs and kids and can handle it?? Dogs are forever babies and will always need you to keep them on routine. Keep this in mind when you’re thinking of adding a furbaby to your family! 18:00 - Stay tuned for the adventures of Marley and Harley (maybe a new insta is on its way). Meka’s kids are excited to have the new puppy but also are ready to take on the responsibilities too. 19:50 - No matter which way you have a dog in your life, whether you’re a dog mama or a dog auntie, these pups do bring happiness and enjoyment to us. They’re always so happy to see you and other people are nice to you too! 21:10 - We can’t say bye without our Drive Tracks. Add these to your playlist - Big Sean Wolves (keeping with the fur theme), and a classic, Whitney Houston’s Every Woman.Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on their updated socials!
00:40 - Hey mamas, welcome back! We back and still Black and excited to be here with you! Don’t forget your tea. You know what Meka is sippin on - her peach, mint, ginger classic with honey mixed in. Monique is changing it up today by sipping on some matcha. 04:32 - This year of 2020 has been something else for us all. The ladies reflect on how they brought in 2020 and how different the start of the year was from our current situation. We’ve all learned so much since the pandemic hit, but what exactly have these lessons been? Meek feels she’s gained perspective on how short and special life really is, as we’ve all gone through so much loss this year. Let’s use every talent and ounce of energy we have to put into living a rich and good life. 08:45 - Nique adds to that sentiment, realizing she’s at the “ma’am” stage of her life and she wholly embraces it! Let’s give love to each other while we’re here, not just when we lose someone or are faced with pain. 12:32 - Anybody else have that creeping feeling that the other shoe is gonna drop? Sometimes, it can be hard to enjoy all the good things in life because we’re so conditioned to expect and prepared for bad things - thinking about what happens if a partner dies, where are all the important documents, what happens to the family dynamic, having all these hard conversations! 14:55 - One of the biggest lessons of 2020 is that we can do better, we can do so much better and we have the capacity to elevate the work that we’re doing to do more for ourselves, our minds, our kids, our communities. Monique talks about the simple joy of having a bathtub and time to think and gain perspective, of up and moving to a new city and understand what is really needed in life. 17:20 - Meka adds that she is more present, more grateful for what she has and her journey to this point in her life, and the fact that there is more growth in her future. She is learning to love what she has, is letting go of the junk, and reshaping what home means to her. 19:57 - The ladies encourage the listeners, if there’s somewhere else that you’re being called to be, take the leap and watch the doors open up for you. Even when you’re scared, you can do it and create change in your life! What would your excellent day and excellent life look like? 22:53 - Even though this year has been challenging, with so much loss and so many changes, there is good still happening! Marriages and celebrations, job growth and babies being born; remember to focus in on the good. 25:45 - Meek and Nique reflect on how the pandemic has grounded their travel plans and remember back on their last plane trips. There’s so much about traveling that we miss, but maybe there are some changes we can make when we are able to travel again - travel less, stay longer, be more present and thankful for being able to be somewhere new. 28:24 - We always gotta end with our Drive Tracks. Meka is listening to the whole Detroit 2 album by Big Sean but is especially loving Harder Than My Demons. Monique is listening to Stevie Wonder’s Don’t You Worry Bout a Thing, which is especially fitting for the present time. Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on their updated socials! Meka’s blog is Hanging with the Harrells and her instagram is @xomekaharrell.Nique’s website is Monique Hibma and follow her @moniqueimanhibma.Follow the show at @teawithmeekandnique on Insta to see behind-the-scenes and more content, make sure to use the #teawithmeekandnique so we can see what you’re sipping on, say hello to your fearless hosts at meekandnique.com, and tune in for the next episode!
00:45 - We’re back! We all made it through another day of virtual learning at home in this crazy pandemic. And that’s what this episode is about - how we’re making it through distance learning, what we’re learning while our kids are in school at home, and what our escapes are looking like now. Who else has personal time in the car or at the Target drive-thru? 04:56 - So, what have been the biggest challenges of school-at-home so far? For Meka, she’s in the first week of kindergarten and it is a struggle to get Jagger out of bed and motivated to do schoolwork. But, the ladies applaud that the kids are able to function and even try going to school right now - it’s a lot of work and they’re struggling too! 08:55 - Speaking of challenges, virtual school also means that our schedules, routines, and structures have changed. Workouts can’t happen whenever we want, the living space has changed to accommodate school, and we are literally living in the living room. We’ve all just become more adaptable and adjusted our spaces so we can live, work, play, and chill. 12:02 - Monique talks about the challenges of living downtown and navigating the city when they get the kids outside for “recess” - avoiding fast cars and narrow sidewalks, but this also creates the opportunity to have new outdoor adventures. 12:40 - However, there are some highlights! Meek loves not having the daily early rising and long commute to get to school. Nique includes an imaginary “commute” to school every day, so the kids can feel set up and ready for school. We’ve all got some more time in our mornings to get creative (or sleep more)! 14:33 - Speaking of time, it’s tea time. Meka is sipping on The Meka, her peach, mint, and ginger classic. Maybe she’ll find a mango tea next time. Nique has got a citrus green tea, a good mid-morning tea to keep you going! 15:37 - The ladies talk about how lunchtime has changed for the better. With all the extra time we have with the kids now, Meek and Nique are feeding them hot, nutritious lunches and trying new things (air fryer fish sticks, anyone?). Making new menus and giving lunch fun, fancy names is definitely another highlight of virtual school right now. 19:27 - Meek and Nique talk about the processes of learning schoolwork, submitting assignments, and teaching the kids technical skills they need to participate wholly in virtual school so they can continue to learn and grow. But, it can be hard to keep up with everyone’s different schedules and calendar reminders - remember to give yourself some grace, teach self-sufficiency to your kids, and allow your kids to also figure out how to navigate their day. 24:33 - Meka talks about how virtual school has also given her perspective of what she has, and what she’s able to give her kids. Two of Jagger’s classmates have to do school from a daycare center instead of from home because parents still have to work, juggle life, and figure out how to give their kids a safe place to learn. We all have to do whatever we can to make it work for our families during this time. 29:50 - In all this, though, we all still struggle, including the kids. They’re missing their friends, missing their routines, and the extracurriculars that got them out of the house. Meek and Nique discuss how their kids all cope differently and how they channel their frustrating moments into creative outlets and socially distant activities. 38:08 - Of course we have to wrap up with our Drive Tracks (for those pretend commutes right now). Meka is listening to Lucky Me by Vic Shawn, which is grounded in his personal experience with a medical scare that turned out to be nothing. Nique has been feeling nostalgic, listening to Lauryn Hill’s Nothing Even Matters, and the whole Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album. Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on their updated socials!
00:42 - The ladies are back! We have an exciting topic today - fitness! Monique is the fit momma and Meka has just started her own “sweat-xy” fitness journey, so we’re talking from every perspective. Remember, the kids are always watching, so let’s be good examples. There are so many ways to incorporate exercise into family time and it makes it so much more fun! 4:44 - Meek talks about taking the plunge and buying herself the Peloton bike. Make sure to check out her blog post about the reasons why it’s worth that investment, because she’s already feeling and seeing the benefits. Nique has been a Peloton member for a while, so if you want to be Team Peloton with the communitea, hit up the ladies for referral codes and get some money off on your bike accessories! 7:50 - We have to sweat for our health. The CDC cites that the leading cause of death for black women is heart disease, so we have to do the work to keep our bodies strong and healthy. If you don’t want to spend the money on a Peloton, download a fitness app to get you going or simply go out for a walk! It also just makes you feel good, so get out and do it. 10:45 - Technology today helps so much too! The ladies talk about the different exercises that you can add to your Apple watch, the motivation of closing your activity rings, and taking on challenges with your friends. 14:45 - Just like jump rope, we gotta jump in at the right time with what we’re sipping on today. Meka’s got her signature staple, her Ginger Peach and Mint tea, while Nique is trying something new, a Japanese green tea called gyokuro. 15:42 - And we’re jumping back into fitness! From jump ropes to hoola hoops, some of our childhood favorites can be fun or just plain ridiculous. 18:00 - Fitness and health go hand in hand, and a big part of health is staying hydrated. Drink that water and get some sunshine, because we’re basically plants. 18:37 - Let’s talk yoga. Yoga is so great for your body because it’s all bodyweight strength exercise, it’s about mindfulness and focusing on yourself. We know Monique is the yoga queen, so check out her practice and even schedule a flow session with her on her website! 24:21 - Fitness is a journey and it’s a process. No, we’re not always in the best shape ever all the time, but we’re going to be working out to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Try some of the things that Meek and Nique have - crossfit, weights, spinning, and get you some new kicks to look good too! 25:50 - Fit Chiks Omi and Nicki have inspired Meka so much recently by making Black Girls Skating go viral! They look fire and rollerblading is definitely some work. Being physically active doesn’t have to be super strenuous or boring - it can be fun! Go ice skating, involve the family, challenge yourself to do a little more every day. We have so many opportunities to get our bodies moving. 28:55 - Need some fit-spiration? Follow our friends Omi and Tiffany and find other people who are doing the dang thing and motivate you to do more for yourself! We all need that positive encouragement. 30:00 - Drive Tracks have a workout theme today. We’re listening to Kanye West’s Workout Plan and Brand New Me by Alicia Keys. Add these jams to your workout playlist, then let us know what you’re listening to!Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on their updated socials! Meka’s blog is Hanging with the Harrells and her instagram is @xomekaharrell.Nique’s website is Monique Hibma and follow her @moniqueimanhibma.Follow the show at @teawithmeekandnique on Insta to see behind-the-scenes and more content, make sure to use the #teawithmeekandnique so we can see what you’re sippin on, and say hello to your fearless hosts at meekandnique.com, and tune in for the next episode!
00:80 - And we back, and we back, and still black! Are you sipping with us, communitea? Today, Meka is sipping on her fave Peach Ginger and Mint tea, and Nique is changing it up with some peppermint. Christmas in July, anyone? 2:20 - This episode is all about how we are doing; like really, how are you? What sparked this was a sentence in a Bible plan - “we walk through life with our masks on” - that captures how we have to change our authentic selves. If you’re wearing your mask and I’m wearing mine, how are we ever going to know each other? Today, we’re going to show up authentically and really see each other, pain, flaws, and all. 4:05 - Being authentic and honest with ourselves is so valuable, especially now, because it allows us to find the support we need. As mamas, Meek and Nique know how much they’re doing for their children, and that there are other mothers out there doing 100% for their kids by themselves. Being with our kids 24/7 in this pandemic is hard! 7:85 - Yes, we love and care for our kids, but you bet we are gonna take our time for ourselves! Taking time for you allows you to re-energize and come home stronger for your family and for yourself. 8:95 - The ladies talk about how they’re doing - like, how they’re really doing. Meek talks about how she’s really feeling more stress free, sleeping in, living life as a night hawk. Nique describes feeling a deeper inner peace, a gratitude for where she is in life, being amazed at how her children are growing into their own lives. 12:30 - The ladies talk about how the changes the pandemic has brought this year has also invited a new calmness and a scaled-back approach to life, while wrestling with a feeling of nostalgia and longing for going to do things. Meek and Nique talk about how the new adaptations COVID has forced on us has made them more creative, more appreciative, and helped them realize that the little things are so big and important. 17:96 - The conversation turns to taking ourselves too seriously, especially growing up in a black household where that behavior was definitely side-eyed by our elders. Let’s live life, kids, and let’s learn how to let go a little bit, adults. 20:20 - Mental health is so important, especially right now, for the mamas who are home and taking care of the kids and getting ready for virtual school. We have to use the resources around us, whether that is therapy or a spiritual director, we have to have someone who we can talk to as a sounding board to cope with all of the things that we as black women, black mothers, have to live with each day. It’s okay to not be okay, and it’s okay to get help! 25:96 - Monique reflects on an experience she had with an acquaintance that made her realize: what would happen if two people showed up as their authentic selves? If we could introduce ourselves truly and authentically… what would we even say?? Our life circumstances make us who we are, it doesn’t hold us back, so we need to learn how to own it. 30:85 - We’re going to leave it there with some Drive Tracks. Meek’s track is Freedom by Beyonce because it makes her feel empowered to be free from the stress and anxiety of Corporate America. Nique is listening to India. Aire’s Strength, Courage & Wisdom because it’s a great song that features all black artistsMake sure to follow Meek and Nique on their updated socials! 1:12 - This episode, we’re starting with the tea. Meka is sipping on her trusty Peach, Ginger, and Mint tea, and Nique has a Hibiscus Berry with a dash of agave. Good tea for today’s episode. 2:30 - The ladies dive into the fun things that they and the kids have been doing while in Covid lockdown. Meek shares about how she took her family to a drive-through farm to see and feed all the different animals, which was so fun for the kids (but expensive for mama)! Video on that coming soon.... 6:30 - Hellman’s Mayonnaise or Miracle Whip? There’s no debate on this podcast. It’s gotta be Hellman’s! 7:30 - Nique talks about how their family has been riding bikes together, seeing her eldest teach the youngest how to ride without training wheels, and seeing her kids truly bond with each other in this time of Covid. 9:05 - The ladies talk about Family Night Fridays - finding the right movie, gotta get the pizza! Meka talks about watching Babysitter’s Club on Netflix and how it’s so different from what they used to watch, because it addresses real topics like divorce, LGBTQ+, racism, and other important social topics that children and pre-teens have to navigate. 12:00 - Meek and Nique go through their other Netflix recommendations and how both their households are obsessed with The Floor is Lava! Are your kids obsessed too? Who would be on your team? 17:25 - Nique is appreciating spending time with her husband and being outside more. They reflect on the Saharan dust storm that came through and appreciate the calm of the summer nights, even though it’s hard to be grounded and not travelling right now. 18:47 - The ladies discuss strategizing long car rides and travel during Covid with kids who need to stop all the time! There are so many useful tools for travel so you don’t have to stop. Get you some gel cups :) 22:55 - Drive Tracks Time! This week, we’re listening to Chloe X Halle Ungodly Hour album, especially the song ROYL, and Ciara’s Girl Gang from her Beauty Marks album. Listen up and let us know what you’re listening to!Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! 00:40 - We back! The ladies are ready for a new season and are going to push their conversations to the next level to address and reflect on what is happening in the world. 2:20 - Meka gives a life update about her career and catches us up on changes that she has been through in recent months. She made plans to leave her job in June, but Covid came through and changed everything. 6:15 - The ladies reflect on how Covid has impacted their lives, how it has been a humbling experience, and how it has been a strangely positive opportunity for true rest. They speak on how they have been able to reconnect and be involved more deeply in their children’s lives (even though it can make you crazy sometimes). 9:00 - The theme of today’s episode is grounded in real, honest talk about being Black in America, how Black Lives Matter and how that applies to Black women and mothers, and how to find courage through all that is happening in this country right now. 11:20 - Meek shares about explaining to her son about slavery and their ancestors, about the strength of Black history, and how nothing has meaningfully changed since then. More needs to be done. 12:40 - Meek and Nique reflect on how they coped with the heartbreaking murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, and how deeply it impacted them as individuals, as Black women, and what action they began to see around them as a reaction to these crimes. 15:50 - Nique shares her frustration around the white women who reached out on social media after George Floyd’s murder, that those messages felt disingenuine because they had never reached out before, didn’t follow any other Black people on socials, and it seemed more like a “am I a good white person” check. 18:06 - Meek shares an experience about picking up her son from daycare (pre-Covid) where another mother asked who she was and why she was there… because she had never seen Meek before. It’s incredibly infuriating to have people question Black parents who are simply just parenting, or doing anything else! 22:40 - Meek shares a quote: “Look at Black people, learning stocks, buying plants, saving money, prioritizing health, exercising, uniting, progressing. Rest looks so good on us.” This quote is so perfect for what they need right now, and encapsulates what the ladies are so excited for this season. 24:21 - Nique reflects on balancing the work and the rest, in combination with her husband who is working hard to tackle Covid, and teaming up to ensure that there is Covid testing accessibility in black communities that need it! 27:45 - “It’s not an if, it’s a when.” Meek and Nique discuss what it’s like to live every day in this world as a Black person, as a Black woman, and a Black mother. The fear that they carry every day is not right and needs to change, but it has made them strong. We will come back to this all season long, this is the real and raw work. 29:05 - But here’s the tea for today! Nique is sipping on Rosehip and Camomile to help with the zen needed to address the topics in today’s episode. Meek is sipping on her go-to of Peach, Ginger, and Mint tea, because when she finds something she likes, she sticks with it. 31:11 - What do you call Drive Tracks in the time of Covid? Mommy Mood Makers? We’ll come up with a new name... Meek and Nique have been listening to Triggered by Jhene Aiko and Black by Buddy. Give these a listen until next time!Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! Meka’s blog is Hanging with the Harrells and her instagram is @hwthblog.Nique can be found at White Coat Wifey and followed at @whitecoatwifey! 0:40 - It’s the wrap up! This season flew by. Before we get into the final episode of season two, what are we sipping on? 02:15 - First, before we move forward what tea are we sipping on? Meek is sipping on some raspberry leaf tea and Nique is sipping on Honey Lemon. They conclude that the studio tea staples are Raspberry leaf, Peach and Ginger and Spearmint. We hope you have a good situation in your cup as well! 03:35 - Nique reveals this episode's theme, “Spring Break Ideas”. They both have the spring break fever, Meek is so ready for the warmth and some sun rays. Nique acknowledges that she is soft living in NC compared anywhere up north where there is snow and it is bone-chilling cold. 04:20 - Nique has regional expectations, if she lived in Minnesota she would need a Range Rover and a constant rotation of UGG’s to survive. Meek relates, she has a friend who lives in Minnesota and they constantly wear UGG’s. 04:55 - Nique kicks off the conversation by asking Meek, “What is your spring break idea #1”? Meek says, “Going to the Caribbean”, she is behind on her plans but she wants an easy flight and a nice all-inclusive package for the kids. 05:55 - The duo reiterates that during this episode you will gain practical, useful choices for your own adventure from their idea bank. First and foremost it is all about getting family time in. Some ideas are definitely on the bucket list. 06:45 - Nique actually started planning a California spring break adventure for her family, but she got a hard stop after sharing the details of the trip with her kids. When asked what they would rather do, her son reminded her that there are landmarks at their grandpa and grandma's house in Iowa and that is their first choice. Nique and her husband may decide to have their own adventure, currently, Toronto and Omaha are on their list. 09:05 - Meek’s family has experienced California for spring break. They went to Legoland in San Diego and another year they went to San Francisco and enjoyed the Golden Gate Bridge. Meek has many fond memories of California and encourages Nique to definitely make it there with her family in the future. 10:15 - Nique brings up another spring break idea, she believes spring back can be a slowdown. You can stay stateside or in your city, there are so many interesting places to visit such as state parks, being in nature is always a great idea. Also, having a declutter day where you fill up bags to donate. Meek has staycation on her list as well but she throws in the idea of going to a hotel for one night, Meek’s kids love indoor pools. Nique mentions going to the dollar tree and even decorating the hotel room and the importance of giving yourself a theme and budget. Meek believes you do not need to feel like you have to live up to any expectations of spring break, this is not Instagram. The most important thing is that you are with your family, making memories. 13:35 - Meek’s next idea is to take a road trip, even though she personally does not want to be in a car for more than 5 hours. And, you do not have to go far, Meek loves Wilmington for some beach time because it is a 1 to 2-hour drive from her home. But, Meek is very set on spring break in the Caribbean, she wants to GO! Something is calling her there. One thing, Meek’s two youngest haven’t used their passports and she wants them to experience the beach vibes. Nique promotes NC, there are so many great cities to visit within a couple of hours. 16:20 - Meek has another idea for spring break and it revolves around the importance of family nights. It is one of her favorite things to do with her family, all you need is a good movie, homemade popcorn, the fireplace on and laughter. The big takeaway, there is nothing wrong with staying home and relaxing. Home is where the heart is :). 17:35 - Nique feels like spring break is a great time for service and there are two options. It is an excellent time to find a service project to complete as a family. Or, for her family, it is not always about physically doing something with a local at need group. She really feels it is most important to remember to just show up and let yourself be the light in the environment and leave people better than you found them. 19:40 - Nique brings up an important point, the people you are serving can also be your friends. It is not about I’m helping you, it can also just mean being present for your friend. It is all about getting out of your normal environment and being immersed in another environment. 20:15 - Meek wraps up her top three spring break ideas including staycation, Caribbean and a road trip. She loves the idea of incorporating service into spring break and she loves Nique’s idea of decorating the room if you splurge for a hotel room for a night. They both hope spring break is lit on your level this year. Nique wants to add in random fire questions to each episode and Mom confessions of the week. 21:35 - Nique does not wait until next week to begin Mom confessions, she asks Meek what her Mom confession of the week is. Meek says that it is her chosen snack eaten away from her kids. If she has a snack that she wants then she very well may hide it in her closet and eat it without feeling guilty. She does not feel bad her kids have an entire pantry of stuff that they like. They both agree it feels good to say no sometimes. Nique’s Mom's confession of the week is that she wants to celebrate the fact that she ate pizza with actual cheese for the first time in a very long time. It was a plain cheese pizza and she has been planning for this, so she bought some Lactaid so she didn’t die. Nique believes you need to give yourself indulgences as a balance in your life. Meek just started eating chicken again! Her husband always says, “It is all in moderation babe.” Now they are determined to find the best cheese pizza around and have a date. 27:30 - Drive Tracks!! Meek’s drive track is “Shell Shock” from the Ninja Turtle Soundtrack, but you have to tell Alexa, “Alexa play Shell Shock by Juicy Jay”, it is the only way she will play the song. Nique’s drive track is a throwback, “Dirty Computer '' by Janelle Monåe, she really needed this song today because she went to the grocery store with her husband they were asked if they wanted to split the order, Nique said in all things love and replied, “I hope my husband is buying my breakfast.”Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! 01:24 - The ladies are hype to be here today, it is a bit chilly outside, but sunny. First, before we move forward what tea are we sipping on? Meek is sipping on some raspberry leaf tea with a half teaspoon of agave, Nique is sipping on a matcha green tea latte, she went latte style this time, so it’s with oat drink, it isn’t super sweet but she brought a chocolate bar to balance the sweetness. 02:40 - Nique reveals this episode's theme, “Family Flow”. They are both routine queens and Meek does not feel like you can be as successful if you do not have a routine. Nique has to swap the word routine with flow, and Meek says she calls it a guide. There is always room to divert from your flow or guide for the day, audit or edit. 03:45 - Today’s talk will consist of five techniques that help their families thrive. This week’s theme is actually brought to you by someone who attended the podcast launch and submitted an idea. 04:42 - Meek begins with one of her techniques “Meal Prep”, she made meal prep for the entire month and it really helped her know what was for dinner, now she does also admit that it has fallen off, but she recommends breakfast for dinner in case you don’t know what you are going to eat. Meek shares a funny story about her son’s love for eggs and the process and time required for boiling an egg that he doesn’t understand yet. 06:32 - Nique piggybacks of Meek and shares her blue apron days, where she felt like there was so much packaging and everything had its own bag, and the food was a bit fine dinning for her kids. None of those meal preps is any joke including mincing garlic, dicing and simmering and she felt she often put it on the table and had her children tell her this looks gross and it took 30 mins!! She feels like her family is finally aged enough to enjoy the days of food subscription and the food prep required behind it. Nique shares a tip, everyone in her family is helping cook and Meek agrees, the kids eat it when they are invested in cooking the food as well. Meek shares a funny saying she has when her kids don’t want to eat what she has prepared, “Either you have this, or you can have an air sandwich”, and it has not failed her yet. 09:40 - Nique’s technique # 2 is having a school routine. Meek says she doesn’t have a big school routine, but the one thing that does simplify the process is that they wear uniforms. She is making sure her children are reading because they do not do screen time throughout the week. 11:00 - Nique says, “ I think in our house, we make school the main event for the week, it is Monday through Friday so it is the main event and we hype it.” Nique loves the morning, the drive, leaving the house and the flow of the morning is nostalgic for her because she drove in a car to school with her siblings every day. She makes it a priority to talk about their days at dinner, they go through the roses and thorns of the day. She makes it a priority during the drive to do the daily bible verse of the day, they do their mantras and goodbyes, and she loves that. 12:15: Meek confesses that the drive to school is a sore subject, they drive about 45 mins each way, and traffic can be unpredictable. Sweet Maverick does not like to be late, he often asks, “Are we going to be late today, because I do not want a tardy” haha. 13:25: Meek goes into her next technique which is Alexa alerts. There is a morning Alexa alert, to get ready to leave and an Alexa alert at night around 7:30 PM, then a wrap-up alert for bathtime, with an 8:00 PM alert to get your buns in the bed and start reading, 8:30 PM alert is lights out for her children. She has a personal alert on her Alexa that says “Goodnight Herald family”, and it tells them the weather for tomorrow. She believes it helps move through the morning and evening, almost like school bells moving kids through classes. 14:45: Nique uses alerts as well, Quad City DJ’s song Come on Ride That Train is her children’s morning 7:30 PM alert to get out the door and into the car. Both confess that their alerts help them to not feel rushed, which both dislike. 16:35: Niques next technique is that the weekend is sacred time, one of their implementations is the screen-free zone until 9:30 AM in the morning, this helps keep them on a routine, they ask the kids to do their morning flow, get up like your normal school day, make sure your hydrated and get dressed, be a human and then zone out for a little bit. 18:45: Meek next technique is to have a trusted village to help you assist with your children, her village is Nana and Poppa and Auntie because they all live in the same area. Having people that they can trust allows her and her husband to go on date nights. It helps that they have their own space at Nana and Poppa’s, they enjoy using their tablets at their grandparent’s house. Meek tells a funny story that Axle is in love with his tablet and he counts down the days of the week until Friday because he gets to play with his tablet then. 21:00: Nique and her husband recharge with date days. They have been soaking in their bible time, they are on day 57 of reading the bible every day. They have a bible study, it is part of their nightly routine, they have tea and popcorn, sometimes they watch a show, it is a great routine to end their nights with God, Nique sleeps better afterward. 23:00: Meek gets into her personal routine. She has her away time, me time, “Meka time”, this means she can be a better wife and mother to all her children. She got away to Charlotte, trusting her family and she really let herself be present and not check-in all weekend with her children. 24:35: Nique gets into her personal routine. She is really into her health routine for her family and keeping them healthy. She finds that hand washing is the one thing we can all day to make a huge difference in staying healthy. She tells a funny story of a flight attendant misunderstanding their travel routine. 28:30: Nique mentions her UV wand. Meek shares her first experience with the UV wand, where Nique scanned her phone to show how dirty it was. Nique advises that you Lysol or sanitize your phone regularly.. 29:30: Meek’s last technique is that she loves sharing her iPhone calendar with her husband, it helps her mentally prepare for what is happening each day between both of them and their children. Anytime she adds anything to her calendar, it updates her family’s phones. She makes sure they all have 2-hour alerts before any even, so they can prepare. Nique agrres says it helps you stay in sync with your husband and family. 31:20: Drive Tracks!! Nique has come up with a term, PWPT, Predominately White People Tracks, she added one for this week Drive Tracks, Imagine Dragons, on their Origins soundtrack the song Burnout. Meek’s drive track is dedicated to her daughter, her team has won five volleyball games in a row and she gets hype listening to her pre-game track, Justin Biebers Yummy.Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! Meek had to take her son to the ER for emergency eye surgery. She goes into the back story of how that came to be. She had mom guilt because she didn't follow her heart and leave when she thought she should. Now he’s doing better and everything's fine. 29:00 - Nique details a humbling airport moment where her daughter stayed adamant about not holding her hand in the crowded area that was making her nervous. She thought to herself, “ What could these people be thinking in their heads”, but then realized that her kids are independent and have minds of their own. 32:25 - Health Tips for Moms. Insights into choosing flu shots and flu shot alternatives. The benefits of Elderberry syrups, washing of the hands, hand wipes and eating fruits and vegetables to stay healthy.35:48 - The ladies quickly discuss their first drive tracks of the new year. 0:41- And we’re back Meek and Nique finish off their season with memories from previous podcast episodes. 2:59- They're going to hit on 5 different takeaways from Season 1. 3:17- The rap up, in the first point Nique has two episodes that she considers to be her favorite. She then goes on to explain why they are her favorites. Meek does the same but in reference to one favorite episode. 7:43- What's the most exciting thing about podcasting so far? Both Meek and Nique explain how the audience connection makes podcasting exciting to do. For example, Nique gets excited whenever she sees a repost regarding the podcast.10:41- Takeaways from Season 1 episodes. These two intellectual women went on record to express their gratitude towards their families and viewers. Nique even quotes scripture James 1:2 “ consider pure joy my brothers and sister whenever you face trials…” also meek feels that planning was a huge takeaway from season 1 heading into future seasons. 17:13- Favorite tea from Season 1. Coming up towards the end of episode 10 the ladies sit down to discuss their favorite teas, the more popular tea to stand out between the women is a sweet mango with ginger tea. This definitely has me ready to find where the tea comes from, you didn’t get it from me but the local shop was revealed throughout the remainder of this topic. 19:37- What excites them most about Season 2. The fact that there is going to be a Season 2 is for sure at the head of the list. Another thing that excites these two knowledgeable ladies is the introduction of a few guests who are yet to be named. Finally, the debut of new and exciting episodes as well as reassigning the jar? 00:41 - Welcome back to Episode 9 of Tea with Meek and Nique! We are taking a short break over the holiday, but we will be back strong in 2020 as we continue to build our brand. Today's topic is the Enneagram, we’re talking about what it is, why we love it, how knowing our type has helped us, what surprised us from our test results and how the results even guide our mothering. 04:56 - First, let’s define the Enneagram? From the Magnolia Journal, page 48 from the Fall of 2018. ‘Often misunderstood as simply a personality assessment used to describe quirks and traits of individuality, this tool goes much further than simple characters. It helps explain the ‘why’, of how we think, act and feel. It helps us come to terms with our gifts as well as with the difficult patterns that tether us to ur greatest interpersonal, spiritual and emotional challenges’. 06:32 - Meek and Nique explain how they found their way to the Enneagram. Meek found out about the Enneagram on social media and Nique was asked randomly by someone if she had taken the Enneagram test. Meek took a free test, though she normally does not believe in things like the Enneagram when she read her results she felt seen. 07:20 - Disclaimer: Our description of Enneagram is such an elementary introduction to everything Enneagram from our experience and perspectives. There is so much to know and there are experts like, Chris Hewards who can then guide you more deeply into all the things that are woven into the Enneagram. Nique explains that there are 9 numbers and it’s built-in a triad. She explains what the test looks like and how it asks you to choose your answers. Nique continues to say she is a dominant 2, a type 2 person is a caretaker, a pleaser, a helper type individual, seeks love through self-sacrifice.10:00 -The follow-up work after taking the test is learning who you are and how to be a healthier you. Nique explains it’s one thing to know your number but it is what you do with your number that really matters. Nique explains that this can help lead a healthier mental lifestyle. Nique asks Meek why she loves Enneagram, Meek is a type 7 which is basically the enthusiast, adventurer and the energizer, hence, all of the energy she has, she seeks imaginative freedom and independence and has always been this way. She doesn’t like to be tied down to one thing, she gets bored easily, one thing that her Enneagram always says (which she doesn’t know if she can commit to) are the spontaneous adventures.14:14 - Learn how to resonate with who you are and how to healthily reflect it on the outside. Nique loves the Enneagram because a passage of the magazine said, ‘Once we learn our Enneagram type, it can change the way we see ourselves. It helps us tell to see the truth about who we really are and live out of that reality and the Enneagram can help lead a healthier lifestyle. It keeps Nique truly balanced and centered. Meek explains how she is reluctant to share her ‘hidden struggles’ due to her belief that she must appear upbeat and fun and conceal emotions, anxiety, and loneliness as well as frustration that brings her down. She never wants people to know when she is sad because she views it as a sign of weakness.18:29 -Nique gives her summary of her type 2 and how she resonates with it at her best AND her worst. She asks Meek what else she likes about her Enneagram results. 22:26 - Now getting into the question of, “What surprised you most from the test?”. Meek feels how correct it is especially when she read that she needs to sit still, slow down. Nique says a healthy practice for her as a type 2 is solitude. 26:00 - How has the result guided your mothering? When Meek feels burnt out she takes me-time at night when the kids are sleeping and knowing her triggers helps her actively work to stay calm. Nique has found the ability to take me time and the ability to tell her children when she is taking me time.29:40 - Nique closes with a final passage, “All of us just want to know we’re safe and loved. The Enneagram helps us get to the root of this simple desire. From there we can live out the purpose that each of us has been created for.” Book: The Sacred Enneagram - Chris Heuertz-----Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! 00:40 - And we’re back! Meek and Nique catch each other up with how they’re feeling (all the ailments and faux hangovers), and are changing it up a little this episode. Instead of pulling a topic from the Tea Jar, they are going straight to the communitea with a Q&A session. 2:10 - Our first question is from Kiera, who asks: What does it look like to raise black children in America today? What does it look like more specifically for your individual families? 2:30 - First, shout out to our communitea for interacting with us, sending us your questions, and letting us know what you think! Before getting to Kiera’s question, Meek and Nique tell us what they’re sipping on. Monique is sipping on a rooibos tea named I Woke Up Like This, which she also shared with Meka for today. 4:14 - To answer Kiera’s question… for Meek, knowing she has three black sons, it makes her feel sick because she’s afraid for her kids and how they can be targeted by society. Right now, they’re seen as small, cute children, but they will grow into tall, strong, black men who won’t receive the same grace from society. For Nique, she leans on her faith and her husband. She is fiercely protective of her son, recalling Emmett Till and how so little has changed for black boys in America since then. 8:13 - Meka brings up the Exonerated Five and the impact of how young black boys are represented in the media. This is a hard and sensitive topic, and is a fear for every mother of black children. 9:55 - Nique brings up her mixed family and the fiery confidence that her daughter has, which can pose a challenge as she grows older. As she grows up as a biracial person, how will she be received and perceived in the world? Nique explains that it’s an ongoing challenge to ensure that her biracial kids know that they don’t have to choose black or white, that they belong in society, and they are in charge of their own identities. 12:28 - For Meka, her goal is to raise happy kids. Kids see color but not with the heaviness that adults do. Still, she makes sure that her children know about the history of their ancestors and recalls bringing Elle to the African American History Museum in DC to show her black history in America. 14:25 - The ladies remind us: Prayer without works is dead. Remember to put your prayers into action. 15:50 - Meek and Nique both have used the Little Leaders books by Vashti Harrison to recognize the celebratory moments and people of Black American history. They recognize in themselves how difficult it is to educate their kids about America’s violence and racism against black bodies, because it’s such a challenging and painful discussion to have with young children. 17:51 - Nique makes the point that it’s all about empowerment and positivity about yourself and your culture. It gives strength to talk about the difficult things when the story is one of survival and resilience. Modern day stories of black excellence prove every day what black success looks and feels like. 19:25 - Meka talks about confidence in their black sons and how positive affirmations build them up with positivity. It’s a great practice to start with any and all of your kids! 21:10 - Meek and Nique invite the communitea to share your affirmations, share how your family navigates race issues and challenges, how you teach your children about the world while building them up. Let’s teach our children to be confident and proud of their blackness. 23:45 - Monique speaks about her eldest child, Layla, who attends an HBCU and has experienced so many people from different backgrounds that she can hang with anybody. She’s always been proud of her blackness and thrives in her environment because of her confidence. 26:30 - “I refuse to raise kids that are soft as butter. We don’t have kids that melt. We have kids that have resilience.” 29:00 - What can our non-black listeners do to be better allies? Have a desire to learn and be sincere about being open to listening to others that don’t look like you. Share conversations with each other and learn from others’ experiences. 31:40 - To close out, it’s Drive Track time! Nique has been listening to Imagine Dragons “The Fall” (but the whole album is great), and Meek has been listening to Afro B’s Drogba (Joanna).----- Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! 00:40 - Welcome back! We’re excited for this next episode, but first, what tea are we sipping on today? Meek is still going strong with the ginger tea while Nique has jasmine green tea today. Wherever you are, pour yourself some tea, slow down, and sip with us. 2:32 - Let’s choose a topic from the Tea Topic Jar! Today, we’re going to talk about our birth stories. Share about your birthing experiences, and what you learned that can help the community. We’ve got so many babies and so many stories! 3:05 - Nique starts with her story of her first child, Layla, who Nique had when she was 17 years old. Being 17 with a baby, Nique describes feeling clueless and unprepared - “I feel like I was an experiment!” Nique learned lessons with Layla’s birth that helped shape and improve her birthing experiences later in her life. 5:50 - Meek’s first baby was also a girl, Elle Marie. Welcoming her daughter had a funny start, as Meek had to text a friend while she was on the toilet to figure out she was in labor. Thankfully, she had a super fast labor and delivery with baby Elle! 9:04 - Nique refers to her epidural experience during Layla’s delivery, which influenced her decision to have drug-free births moving forward. For her second baby, her son Kadeem, Nique worked with a midwife who she loved and made her birthing experience fantastic, using music and exercises to help with labor and delivery. 12:43 - For Meka’s second birth and first son, Maverick, her pregnancy, labor and delivery was so different than her first baby. Everything took so much longer with Maverick, to the point where the doctors said that Meek would need a C section. She describes her C section as a really weird experience, and the healing process is long, painful, and inconvenient. 20:04 - Nique’s third birth to welcome daughter Zia was a water birth! She chose an OB / midwife team to help her through her delivery and had an amazing experience. The nurses helping during the birth helped all of her delivery dreams come true while keeping her and baby Zia safe. 23:15 - Meka’s third baby, Jagger, is her most challenging child. He was born premature at 31 weeks, so her birthing story with him was very different. The hospital’s plan was to keep her on bed rest until Jagger was delivered, however long that took.... which was only a day after she was admitted to the hospital. After he was born, Jagger stayed in the NICU for about a month, and leaving him at the hospital was the strangest thing, but Meek found a rhythm that worked for them. 28:17 - For Meka’s last baby’s birth, Axel, her husband was deployed, so her support team was made up of her sister, her mother-in-law, and of course, Nique. Meek recalls how helpful Nique was and how she advocated for all of Meek’s needs during her labor. 30:05 - After going through so many birth experiences, Meek and Nique’s advice to mamas-to-be and in-the-future mothers: Advocate for yourself and know your rights. Take medical advice into consideration, but know what is right for you, your body, and your baby. Also, have a birthing team who can support and advocate for you, because having babies is tiring! 31:40 - We want to hear your birth stories too! Send us a message of your experiences, trials, tribulations, what you went through while you were delivering - we want this to be a community of knowledge and sharing. 32:02 - To wrap up, it’s Drive Tracks! Nique throws it back to one of her birth tracks, Coldplay’s Us Against the World. The lyrics are beautiful and reminds her that she’s got it, even when life is chaos. Meek is feeling the old Kanye recently, and throws in some appreciation for Kanye’s Sunday services! -----Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! 00:40 - We’re back! Meek and Nique are still on a high from celebrating their podcast launch, meeting followers and new listeners, having a good time. What an awesome experience! 1:58 - What are we sippin’ on today? We’ve got a berry hibiscus tea and ginger turmeric tea, but it’s still 95 degrees in NC so we’re going to sip slow and spill slow. 2:43 - Meek chooses today’s topic from the tea jar is: What health challenges do you have or have you faced? What keeps you strong? Share a tip for our community. 3:15 - This is so relevant for Meka, who actually just came from an infusion treatment before recording this episode. These infusions help with her rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that attacks the body’s joints, causes inflammation, pain, discomfort, and other medical issues. Meek talks about these experiences on her social media, so make sure to check in and follow her journey. 5:00 - Nique asks Meek to share how she feels on the good days versus the bad days. On her worst day, Meka experienced extreme body pain that has prevented her from walking. She also discusses the crazy side effects of the medication that she uses to help her on those especially bad days. Thankfully, Meek has worked with a great rheumatologist on her treatment for a few years. On a good day, Meek can move freely and without pain, and she lives those days fully. Her positive attitude is her driving force and she doesn’t let RA define her. 10:17 - Nique asks Meek what she would tell someone in the community who is experiencing this to help them keep positive? Although it’s easier said than done, Meka just says it’s something you have to do to keep going; the stress will make things worse. Find friends and support that you can vent and cry to, and then pick yourself up to figure out how to make it manageable and keep on moving. 11:34 - Meka offers a tip for our listeners: do your research! Find out what works best for you and your body, try changing up your lifestyle, and make sure that you are feeding your body with food that is healing, not inflammatory. 12:30 - For Nique, she also deals with ongoing health issues, anemia and diastasis recti. Diastasis recti occurs in some women after childbirth, where the muscles in the abdomen separate during pregnancy and do not reconnect after giving birth. Sometimes, you still look pregnant and for Nique, traditional ways of working out actually made it worse! Nique’s tip for listeners is if you think something is up with your body, always check with a physician to see what treatment plan is best for you. 16:46 - “One of the things I’ve learned is that we go too hard. We go too hard, way too soon. We have a baby and then we need to jump up to go right back to work.” - Nique 17:53 - What keeps Meek and Nique strong through their health challenges? For Nique, it’s embracing the body that she has. She pursues a healthy body, heart, lungs, is conscious of what she puts in her body so that she can be with her family for a long time. Remember to slow down and love yourself. 19:25 - The ladies talk about how anemia affects them both and how they deal with it daily. Meka shares how a different health scare that landed her in the hospital led to her anemia diagnosis. 23:55 - It’s time for Drive Tracks! Meka is on a ‘90s kick, listening to the Bad Boy 20th Anniversary album. Come to Me with Nicole Streisinger has been her main jam for now. Nique is listening to James Arthur’s Safe Inside, the other end of the spectrum from Bad Boy, and is feeling a little in her feelings about her oldest baby who is off at college. 25:40 - Shout out to Meek and Nique’s families who were with them for the launch party, thought of the little details that were needed, were taking pictures and documenting the moments. We have supportive kids and husbands, and we are so grateful! ------Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! 0:53 - Welcome to Tea with Meek & Nique! Today, we’re sipping on some delicious mango and ginger tea, while we discuss our tea-topic of mom guilt. Three questions are going to drive our conversation, which are: What gives you that feeling? How do you deal with it? And, what did you discover though experiencing mom guilt? 1:30 - Meek and Nique share how relevant mom guilt is for them all the time. We define it as something that makes you feel bad about not doing your motherly duties, because you’re doing something else. Sometimes, those other things can be what makes you happy, but also just other responsibilities that you have to take care of! 3:00 - Meka talks about her recent bouts of mom guilt, because she’s at work and isn’t able to take or pick up her son from preschool. Monique can relate to this as she starts to take the leap into pursuing her career, especially because she’s been a stay-at-home mama for about five years. Yoga is Monique’s calling and she’s exploring opening her own studio! As part of this, she attended a retreat that happened at the same time as the first day of school. 7:41 - So, how do we deal with the mom guilt? Sometimes, you just have to tell yourself that you’re a good mom, you’re doing enough, and you’re just going to do it! When you take care of yourself, you can pour even more love and energy into your family. Nique talks about how she will sit with those awful and uncomfortable feelings sometimes to figure out why she’s feeling that way. She’s had to adjust her definition of motherhood - does it mean being there for every single moment? Is that realistic and practical, especially when she’s trying to build herself up and create her career? 12:50 - Do what you love, because you’ll feel so much better when you’re with your family. Go do that hobby! Remember to pursue self care! Chase a new career! Take a leap of faith, set the example for your kids, and follow your passion. (Tag us and let us know what you’re doing so we can support you in all your parental greatness)! 14:39 - What have we discovered through experiencing mom guilt? Meek is honest - she’s discovered that mom guilt is crap and all that negativity brings her down. Nique has found a way to lean into her husband for a reality check, where he reminds her of how much she does for the family. Your kids and your partner can see you being the amazing parent that you are, so let them be your encouragement when you need a boost. 18:12 - “I’m in love with getting out of my way. I’m in love with that new mindset.” 19:22 - This is a conversation and we want to hear from you! Tag us and let us know how you overcome your mom guilt. We want to see you shining and celebrate our community of amazing mamas. We’re also always open to some tea recommendations…. 20:25 - To close out, it’s time for Drive Tracks! Meka has been listening to “What About Your Friends” by TLC in her car because she’s feeling that ‘90s jam right now. Nique got into the HBO show Pretty Little Liars and the intro song - “Cold Little Heart” by Michael Kiwanuka - is sooooo good. Give these tracks a listen and let us know what you’re listening to around town. -----Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! 1:30 - The ladies start off by telling us what they’re sippin’ on today. Meek and Nique are enjoying a tea blend that Monique brought back from her vacation to the Netherlands, called a Blue Detox. Nique explains it’s got some pineapple, green tea, other herbs; sounds amazing! 2:18 - Tea Topic for today! The selection from the tea jar today gives us the topic of “How are you raising strong children?” Between our hosts, there are seven, strong, different children to talk about, aged 2 years to 18 years old. To have children who are strong, independent, young people, when Meek and Nique were raised more in an age of “children are seen, not heard,” is so rewarding. 5:18 - How do we cultivate this strength and individuality in our kids? Meek and her husband are like yin and yang - they balance each other out in life and in parenting. She details how her kids are unique, how they interpret the world and react to situations, and how she coaches them through life and growth. Meek practices words of affirmation and encouragement with her children to build them up and let them realize their value. 10:15 - Nique agrees so strongly with what Meek says and does; raising their kids with love and encouragement, talking with them, strengthening their confidence, and taking the time to explain situations. Nique and her husband reinforce this with their children by emphasizing that strong and good people lift others up and look out for people in need. 12:18 - Nique’s husband entered her life when her eldest daughter was only five years old, and he helped Nique to reinforce the value of caring for others (especially those without friends) in their daughter. Lessons in how to be confident without putting others down is so critical in confidence-building and helped avoid a lot of mean-girl situations. Her middle child, her son, has a wonderful sense of the world and exemplifies wise, gentle leadership, while Nique’s youngest daughter is a bold, studious firecracker with the funniest one-liners. 16:55 - Raising strong kids can mean some generational tension, especially with grandparents. Meek and Nique’s children are confident, truthful, and are unafraid to speak their minds (politely), which can go against the way older generations were raised and believe children should behave. 18:28 - Both Meek and Nique have common parenting themes: Giving their children autonomy over their bodies and their worlds, letting them make choices that they want to make for themselves, and encouraging them to use their voices to speak their truth (for better or for worse).20:00 - The ladies talk about the “managed chaos” of life as mothers, how they strengthen their children and families through experience and travelling, and how to be confident out in the world, anywhere in the world. Nique shares some about her family’s experience in the Netherlands, and Meka shares her upcoming world travel plans to London and Paris! 28:00 - Meek and Nique share their Drive Tracks, what they’ve been listening to as they Uber their kids around town, to school, to activities, to… everywhere. Lately, Meka has been vibing to “Don’t Be Jealous of Me” off of the new Lion King album that Beyonce released. The afro-fusion vibes get her going! After all her world travels, Nique has been listening to Charles Bradley’s “Good To Be Back Home,” finding herself again in his soulful voice. Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! 1:06 - Welcome back to Tea with Meek and Nique! Let’s start with the tea we’re sipping on - Meka and Nique are both enjoying some Spearmint tea, which is supposed to be beneficial for your skin and good for your system (but please, get your medical advice from your physician!) 3:10 - Today’s tea topic choice from the Topic Jar is: mom wear! We’re always hoping that our listeners are slaying the day with their looks, but looking good takes effort. Our hosts are rocking their cute, comfy, podcasting outfits, complete with MomSlay shirts. Know why mom-slay is important? Because you never know where you’re going to end up, you don’t know who you’re going to meet, and you don’t know when opportunity is going to show up - and you don’t want to miss out because you weren’t dressed for it! 6:15 - A word on hygiene: wash your hands and get your kids to wash their hands! Good hygiene practices are healthy and common sense (think about everything you touch all day…). 6:50 - Nique has a story about pajamas. Even though it’s her rule to never wear them in public, she went to a Women Evolve pajama event, so she turned up in some silky PJs and Louboutins - pajama fancy. But, as she was leaving… her car got rear-ended. The one time that she broke her rule and wore pajamas out in public, she gets held up with a car accident! 9:40 - What’s another piece of great mom-wear advice? Fresh underwear. Every. Day. We say this for the same reason that Nique doesn’t wear pajamas in public - you never know what might happen and you don’t want underwear with holes in them. What about bras? Yes, those need to fit you and look at getting resized after kids. Victoria’s Secret will measure you and you don’t even need to buy anything! 11:48 - Meek’s go-to mom outfit right now are some leggings or mom-jeans, a mom-slay tee and tennis shoes because she has four kids, three of whom are little boys that don’t stop going, and she needs to always be ready to run after them! Nique enjoys getting dressed in the morning, changing from athleisure to dresses depending on the day - simple, easy, classy. Regardless of what you wear, we believe that if you look good, you feel good! 16:28 - Do you rock the throwback Juicy Couture look? Share your throwback looks and tag @teawithmeekandnique on instagram so we can see all your fabulous outfits. 18:55 - Nique talks about how her youngest daughter is exploring her own fashion and expression. We lead by example as fashionable moms, so it’s exciting to see what our kids come up with in styling themselves! 21:30 - What about mom-fashion swimwear? Both our hosts love a two-piece - they’re fashionable while being functional, and allows for more body positivity that comes with showing off the mom-bod! 23:35 - We always want to hear from our listeners! Tell us about your favorite mom-wear style or outfit, let us know what you rock and what makes you feel good. 24:45 - It’s time for Drive Tracks: what are we listening to on the road? Nique is enjoying Shine by Swoop and Meka is listening to Old Town Road (mainly for little Axel) by Lil Nas X. Every time Axel is having a tantrum, she plays Old Town Road for him and he just starts dancing! For herself though, she’s feeling I Love You Lord by Elevation Worship. It always helps with a bad day and makes Meek feel so positive. ______________________ Want some MomSlay shirts? Grab yours here! Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! 00:15 - Welcome back to Episode 2 of Tea with Meek and Nique! We’re introducing our new Jar of Questions to help us pick topics to discuss on the podcast. 1:00 - To start, let’s go over what tea has been steeping in our cups, so Meek and Nique let us know what they’ve been sippin’ on - literally and figuratively. We’re always open to listener suggestions for some new teas for our communi-TEA of moms to try! 2:45 - We’re going to talk about our week and life updates are happening. Meek starts with happy family visits, movie adventures, hosting a mini-reunion at her house, and getting through a slightly stressful weekend. 4:25 - This leads us to our topic for today: working through family relationships! Meek has a huge family with cousins playing with cousins, holidays at Big Mama’s house, while Nique has a smaller family. 8:31 - Meek gets into the family drama and how Facebook can really fuel some uncomfortable family moments. After talking it out, things seemed to be okay… until the Facebook posts started to come out after the weekend. Getting rid of toxic relationships is needed to protect yourself and your family, even if those relationships are other family members. 17:15 - For our listeners dealing with these same situations, remember to be strong, to give yourself boundaries, and to expect the respect that you and your family need and deserve. One of the things Nique values most in challenging moments like these is finding deep peace and knowing “I have earned it, I deserve it, and I am worth it.” 19:18 - Audit, Edit, and Adjust the relationships in your life! Take inventory for all of the relationships that you’re in and that affect you, and remember you deserve deep peace. 22:00 - You have to set you intention for your day, for your life, for your relationship! Listeners, we hope you realize that boundaries are so important, you have value yourself and to put yourself first in order to recognize how to Audit, Edit, and Adjust. Healthy relationships are what you need! 24:40 - Let’s get on to a fun little portion! We’re always driving around, which means we’re always grooving to good music. Meek is currently listening to Brown Skin Girl by Beyonce on repeat and repeat and repeat. Nique’s jam right now is I’m Getting Ready by Tasha Cobbs Leonard, because big things are getting ready to happen! What are you listening to? 00:40 - The topic for Episode 1 is having fun! Mamas need their fun and let their hair down too. We reminisce about life in our 20s, going to college, late nights and dancing… 4:40 - But now as grown, working women, being wives and mothers, how do we have fun? Meek and Nique’s journeys (and signature songs) their young lives have been different, but now they enjoy home life with their kids and family, having good conversations, and spending time with others. 7:00 - Nique talks about her love for travel and exploration with her husband, a highlight being dancing at a night market in Turks and Caicos. She explains, “In a sober life, you gotta have moments to connect with what is fun!” 8:55 - Social interaction with friends is definitely a high, especially as a mom on the go. We’re giving our all to everyone else, so fun is a way to recharge and pour back into yourself! 10:14 - Having fun is a priority and having more mom events is so important! Other mothers are wanting connection, needing an outlet that’s just for them, and that is so critical for us to take care of ourselves. (Triad, Triangle and Queen City mamas - be on the lookout for us, drop us a line, let’s get connected to get some events rolling!) 12:07 - Fun is also letting yourself indulge. Go ahead and binge watch a good TV show, eat your snacks, have sex with your partner on a Tuesday morning! Find your own definition of fun. 16:55 - One thing to keep in mind is that we don’t have to do it all - we don’t have to struggle! Family support is key in keeping you sane, happy, and allowing you the time you need to have fun. Meeks talks praise on her great in-laws, who take care of her kids and gives her time to have time to herself. Nique’s in-laws are helping to care for her family’s dog, Onyx, so she can pursue the podcast, travel, yoga, and all the things that come with being a mama. 20:45 - We share some funny stories about some strangers that came knocking on your door... Sometimes a doorbell camera is pretty handy. The door is only answered for deliveries (sometimes several times a week)! ________________Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! 00:25 - Our hosts kick-off by finally ending their “conversation fast.” Every time Meek and Nique talk on the phone, they end up with a mini-podcast - so they decided to make a real podcast! 1:13 - What is Tea with Meek and Nique? It’s a little bit of everything! Meet and Nique are North Carolina-based, highly melanated mamas cranking out podcasts every Tuesday. 2:15 - Today, we’re talking all things motherhood, career, spirituality, being a wife, doing it all. Meek has four little ones under the age of 11 - three boys and a girl - and Nique has three kiddos - one off to college, a 7-year-old and a 5-year-old. 4:13 - So, why Tea with Meek and Nique? The ladies come from different walks of life, offer different perspectives, have unique experiences, and have a lot to talk about. The goal is to offer something new and leave you better than you started! They’re here to talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly about life, work, motherhood, marriage - a little of everything. 10:30 - Every episode, we’ll be sippin’ on some tea. For the pilot, we’re literally talking about tea that Meek makes as part of her every morning ritual. On the other hand, Nique is resisting her alarm clock and battling traffic on her way to work. 14:10 - Nique gives us some insight as to how she’s managed motherhood, raised a whole 18-year-old adult and accomplished everything while hitting the 10 years sober milestone! Meanwhile, Meek is testing out a three-tiered bunk bed for her boys and is being pushed to the limit by bedtime chaos. -----Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media!
