In this week's episode, we reflect on how to prepare for Advent. During this busy season, it is easy to spend more time preparing our home than our hearts and we chat about the need for slowing down, quieting our hearts and surroundings, and becoming attentive to God's presence in our daily lives. We also share practical ways we prepare and wait for the coming of our Lord at Christmas. Heather's One Thing - The songs Holy Forever (YouTube) and The Story I'll Tell (YouTube) Sister Miriam's One Thing - The Carmellite Sisters (View their upcoming events here) Michelle's One Thing - The song You Know My Name by Tasha Cobbs and This “Full of Hope” Advent Mug from Blessed is She Announcement: Our Advent study begins next week! Be sure to subscribe to our weekly email to receive each episode, discussion questions, and videos to your inbox. Journal Questions: Ask the Holy Spirit: What do you want me to be present to this season? Where do I need hope in my life? Where do I lack peace in my life? Where do I need joy in my life? Where do I need to birth joy in my life? Discussion Questions: What practices do you incorporate in Advent to embrace the season of preparation? When will you take time for prayer this week and throughout Advent? How can you better embrace Advent rather than just tolerate it? How can you slow the interior pace of your heart in Advent? Quotes to Ponder: “The liturgy of Advent…helps us to understand fully the value and meaning of the mystery of Christmas. It is not just about commemorating the historical event, which occurred some 2,000 years ago in a little village of Judea. Instead, it is necessary to understand that the whole of our life must be an ‘advent,' a vigilant awaiting of the final coming of Christ. To predispose our mind to welcome the Lord who, as we say in the Creed, one day will come to judge the living and the dead, we must learn to recognize him as present in the events of daily life. Therefore, Advent is, so to speak, an intense training that directs us decisively toward him who already came, who will come, and who comes continuously.” (St. John Paul II) Scripture for Lectio: “Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:13) Sponsor - The Little Rose Shop: Discover the beauty of integrating faith into your everyday life with The Little Rose Shop. In this episode, we begin our five part summer study of St. Pope John Paul II's Apostolic Exhortation, Christifideles Laici: on the vocation and the mission of the lay faithful in the Church and in the world. We share why we are excited for the study, ways we have been personally convicted to grow in faith, and what the universal call to holiness looks like in our everyday lives. In a time when darkness seems to be growing, we ponder how Jesus is the hope for humanity and the sense of urgency we should feel in being His light bearers to the world. The Lord has called you to holiness and to bear fruit in this world, wherever you may find yourself. Friends, in our study of Christifideles Laici, you will hear us talk about the recurring theme of community. While reading this apostolic exhortation and listening to each episode by yourself will certainly bear fruit in your life, we want to take a moment to encourage you to reach out to your friends and start a small group to discuss each chapter. We provide on our website journaling and discussion questions you can use, download, and print to begin the conversations. Our hope is that wherever you are, you can build authentic friendships, rooted in Christ, with those around you. What questions do you have before we dive in? How is God calling you to recognize the sacredness of the human person in your daily life? As we discussed in the Lenten study, how have you seen God invite you on mission in this season? Where is your place in the vineyard and what does it look like? Journal Questions: What words am I speaking into my family, my community, and my culture? What sensitivities am I noticing in my heart to the challenges and limitations in the world around me? How can I help? How is God inviting me into deeper prayer and surrender in my daily life? Quote to Ponder: The gospel records that the weeds and the good grain grew together in the farmer's field. The same is true in history, where in everyday life, there often exist contradictions in the exercise of human freedom, where there is found, side by side and at times closely intertwined, evil and good, injustice and justice, anguish and hope. (Christifideles Laici Paragraph 3) Scripture for Lectio: "I am the vine and you are the branches." - John 15:5 Sponsor Information: Did you know we have a website? Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. PSALM 100:4-5 “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – First Thessalonians 5:15-18 The wonderful thing is that when we simply begin to give thanks, even when it seems difficult to remember one answered prayer, it isn't too long before our focus on the good in our lives creates an opening for the Lord's joy. And it's the joy of the Lord that is our strength! Here are some quick takeaways from today's interview: The biggest problem Steve sees with multi cam directors with a church is that they don't value volunteers enough. He encourages directors to value volunteers and invest in the gift. Steward the people to build a solid team. Create spaces for people to grow and do what they're really good at. He sees the role of a director similar to “customer service” in the way of determining the pastor and ministry's vision and then determining “How can I bring my expertise and my art in to serve you well?” Concerning using dollies and steadicams, etc., Steven says, “Don't let the ‘toys' influence the way your creativity thinks. If it doesn't serve the vision, it's useless… I want the end user to experience God through what I'm showing them.” For pastors who don't have people to run cameras, Steve encourages them to find a 16-year old, find the volunteers who are eager to learn. They may not be good at first, but it's better than just capturing a service with a wide shot. They will get better. He encourages his camera operators to be very aware of what God's doing in the room. Don't just live in your viewfinder; look to your left, look to your right. Have a situational awareness to capture what's happening around you. Steven's prayer as a multi cam director leading a church media team: “Open our eyes to what you're seeing, God, and help us capture it.”

Meet Rachel Roff- CEO of Urban Skin Rx ® and single mother to her young daughter, Rosie. Soon after beginning her career as an aesthetician and laser technician, Rachel realized she was unable to perform treatments on family and friends with skin of color. She decided to make it her mission to make the skincare industry more inclusive. Rachel’s unrelenting passion drove her to found Urban Skin Solutions Medspa and Laser Center in 2006 in Charlotte, NC. After great success, Rachel launched Urban Skin Rx®, a line of clinical skincare products for diverse skin tones, in 2010. Her journey to being the incredibly successful skincare entrepreneur that she is today, started years earlier when as a young girl, being bullied to such an extent made her decide to dedicate her life to helping others with skin concerns. Our conversation delves into body image, bullying, the effects of social media, celebrity clients, motherhood and the constant balancing act!! For many of us, body image is an ongoing internal topic; bullying unfortunately is not restricted to the playground, and its effects can be life-long. Thankfully for Rachel, her talent and dedication to improved skincare led her to create products that had people scrambling to get their hands on them, and some of those people were celebrity clients like Eva Marcille, Fantasia and Tasha Cobbs, and they became friends!!!The growth of Urban Skin Rx is evident in stores like Target, Walmart, Ulta, CVS, QVC and recently, HSN. Rachel has achieved a powerful platform to use so as to bring awareness to, and raise money for important social and racial justice organizations such as Black Lives Matter, Campaign Zero, Color of Change, Fair Fight and so many more. For all that she does, my skin, and the skin of many others, say a big “Thank You” to Rachel Roff.........!!!FOLLOW RACHEL:Rachel RoffFOLLOW ME:Acting/Singing/Hostingwww.livingoutloudwithlauretta.comPLEASE DOWNLOAD THIS, AND ANY OTHER EPISODES OF LIVING OUT LOUD with LAURETTA.PLEASE LEAVE A REVIEW- SAY WHAT’S WORKING FOR YOU (AND WHAT’S NOT!) Kuki-Monsta is back! In this episode we discuss whether Christians should be radiant or relevant to pop culture, or maybe both. As believers we are called to be the light (Radiant) of the world right? So how can we be radiant if we are relevant (blend in) to culture? At the sametime how do we reach out to the world if we are not relevant to the world? further more how to we become relavant without being absorbed by "worldly culture". That's the dilemma we face. We also discuss the collabo between Tasha Cobbs and Nikki minaj and the controversy around that. Is Tasha Cobbs striving to be relevant inorder to be radiant?Have a listen to this interesting episode. Radiant Culture
