Today on the podcast I am delighted to say that I am going to be joined by two amazing artists, who are Drew of the Grindcore band See You Next Tuesday and the one man noisegrind act,CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP (aka Chop7Times, Chop7x, Chopx7) from New Haven, CT. Together these two artists have created one of my favourite releases of the year, a collaborative EP titled 'Brothers'.This collaborative release is based off of a book entitled The Brothers' War, a 1998 fantasy novel by Jeff Grubb; it is the first book in the Magic: The Gathering: Artifacts Cycle, detailing the epic conflict between brothers Urza and Mishra on the world of Dominaria. The book explores the origins of Urza and the magical and technological arms race that leads to cataclysmic events. For the album, side A, See You Next Tuesday's Chris wrote his lyrics based on the perspective of the Brother Urza, while Chop wrote his lyrics from Mishra's perspective for side B.We are going to be going through the entire EP, talking about how this collaboration began, why they choose 'The Brothers War' as the inspiration for the EP and how it was used to construct the music, Magic The Gathering and their awesome music video, 'Old Thoughts, and Regrets'. The EP is available for purchase now in two vinyl forms, digitally on Bandcamp and will be available for streaming on May 15th, this Friday!Purchase 'Brothers' on Vinyl Hosted on Acast. Today on the podcast, Mr Billy Fitzgerald makes his return to the show to chat about his latest release, the brilliant 'Little Gestures'.The last time Billy was on, he was here to talk about the release of his lush indie-pop masterpiece ‘A Grand Romantic Gesture', 10 songs that simultaneously bathe in the faded light of heartbreak while pulling you on to the dancefloor. To mark this anniversary of the release Mr Billy Fitzgerald returns with a live EP ‘Little Gestures'. The EP takes 4 tracks from the album and reimagines them for the live environment. Having spent the last year touring the album, Billy found that the songs evolved with the energy of a live band and after being inspired by NPR's famous Tiny Desk series decided to capture the songs in a new stripped down form. Recorded while recovering from the effects of long-covid Billy credits this as his most honest vocal performance recorded to date. Calling on his wife and friends to help bring these versions to life, recording was carried out guerilla style in bedrooms, rehearsal studios and secret spaces. The recordings capture the energy of this, employing shakers, drum machines and melodicas in a stark contrast to the maximalist approach to production on the record. The EP acts as both the perfect entry point for the uninitiated and as a worthy companion piece to the album for fans.I'll be going through the recording process of this EP with Billy, his favourite Tiny Desk performances, Lionel Richie and what how stripping back a song can give it a entirely new feeling!Mr Billy Fitzgerald on Linktree Hosted on Acast. Today on the podcast I am joined by James O'Donnell of Ways of Seeing to talk about the band's brand new second album, 'The Inheritance of Fear', which was released on the 10th of October. The album has been produced by Christian Best, mixed by Dan Fox and mastered by Jamie Hyland. Speaking about The Inheritance of Fear, lead singer James O'Donnell said: “This album explores the ways fear is passed down; through generations, through relationships, through the stories we tell ourselves. It looks at the psychological weight of inherited anxieties, the way past traumas shape our present, and how we either break free or become trapped in these cycles. It examines past memories and re-imagines the lives of those that may have influenced the people we are today. It was an exercise in self-discovery, unearthing all those skeletons….so to speak! Doireann Ní Ghríofa's “To Star the Dark” inspired many of the album's themes, as did the surrealism of TS Eliot's “The Wasteland” and Samuel Beckett's “Waiting for Godot.” I'll be going through the album with James track by track and talking about the themes explored in each of the songs, the recording process, the new techniques used on the album and the stunning music video for the single, 'Idolise'.Ways of Seeing on BandcampWays of Seeing's websiteGlasseyed live at Sin E w/ Gunnera, Shallo & WhitethorrnSacred Noose live at Fibber Magees w/ Lymphodema, Their Last Stop & Ancient Malice Hosted on Acast. Today on the podcast I am joined by Joe and Wally of Dublin post-funk outfit, Scustin!I'll be chatting with the lads about their brand new debut album 'Confessions of a Pub Talker', which was released on September 19th.With 'Confessions Of A Pub Talker', Scustin flip the stereotype of Irish drinking culture on its head. Rather than depicting the pub as a site of excess, they portray it as a communal refuge, which is depicted through the characters and situations encountered by Larry, the bartender of the Pub the story takes place in. Through Larry, Scustin weave stories full of heart and humour, turning each track into a snapshot of life in the public house, complete with its messy, magical humanity.I'll be going through the album track by track with the guys, talking about the inspirations behind the stories and music, who is the character Larry, what it's like to drink cans in a field with Matt Damon, working with Richie Kennedy (who recorded and produced the album) and why you shouldn't put blackcurrant in a Guinness.Scustin have also recently just announced as support act for Inhaler on their latest tour and have a run of Irish shows in February. Tickets links for these shows are available in the band's Linktree!Scustin on Linktree Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
