Local Selection 264: Victor Krum [Live from Index Feb 7th 2025]

This week's Local Selection comes from one of Ireland's most talked-about rising artists, Victor Krum, who supplies an earth-shattering contribution spanning hardcore, rave, and thundering grooves live from Index. Victor Krum is a Dublin-born DJ and producer whose sonic exploration is defined by a bold, high-octane energy, underpinned by experimental sampling and innovative composition techniques. His productions embody an unwavering passion for hard, unapologetically raw music, earning him support from artists such as Sara Landry, I Hate Models, Shlømo, Lee Ann Roberts, Jacidorex, AIROD, CLTX, and Kander. With a strong foothold in Dublin's club culture, Krum has graced iconic local venues such as Index, The Grand Social, and Wigwam, while also expanding his reach to renowned international spots like The Wav (Liverpool), Club Ava (Berlin), and Club 69 (Glasgow). His breakout track, “WTF is Hardcore”, amassed over 1 million streams, claimed the #1 spot on the Hypeedit download charts, and quickly became a fixture in the sets of prominent DJs around the globe. To date, his catalog has surpassed 2 million streams, with releases across notable labels like Influence Records, Rebellion Records, TX Records, The Meaning of Rave, Whalien, Barong Family, and more—alongside a steady stream of self-released material that continues to solidify his place in the global hardcore landscape. His contribution to the Local Selection Mix is, as expected, a relentless, screeching, and unforgiving journey. Krum keeps his foot firmly on the gas, delivering an intense ride from start to finish. The mix is packed with startling hardcore-infused cuts that twist and turn through shocking drops, plunging into suffocating, high-energy rabbit holes, only to erupt into moments of euphoric, 90s rave-inspired ecstasy. This is not a mix for the faint-hearted. Victor Krum ------------------- SC: @user-91739872 IG: www.instagram.com/victor_krumwav2023 Four Four Magazine

This week's Local Selection comes from rising Dublin DJ and producer Josh Burke, who seamlessly blends stripped-back contemporary techno with gritty, funk-infused old-school cuts. His entry is a flirtatious interplay between the past and present, keeping listeners locked in for the full journey. At 22 years old, Dublin-based DJ and producer Josh Burke is quickly making a name for himself in Ireland's vibrant but competitive techno circuit. Known for his raw, deep, and old-school techno style, Burke has carved out a space that pays homage to the roots of the genre while injecting it with a nu-school edge. Burke's has been honing his craft as a DJ, playing across some of Ireland's most lauded venues from The Racket Space, Pawn Shop, The Grand Social, Bow Lane, and An Spailpín Fánach. Burke's entry to the Local Selection Mix is a fleeting journey through 90s and early 00s-style techno, carving out a sound rooted in Robert Hood's Minimal Nation and Jeff Mills' Purpose Maker era, while incorporating modern influences like Alarico and Chlär's Primal Instinct sound and Truncate's Chicago house-tinged grooves. He keeps things gritty, dynamic, and unrelenting. With an ear for detail and a knack for driving the groove forward like an F1 car on its final lap, Burke's selections and mixing style simply scream go! Bicurious are Gavin Purcell (Drums) and Taran Plouzané (Guitars/Vox); a confused, loud two-piece from Dublin, Ireland. They've built a loyal fanbase through extensive touring and have won over crowds both at home and abroad, establishing themselves as a recognizable force on the European rock scene. Bicurious released their second album Your Life is Over Now… on the 4th October 2024 via Big Scary Monsters. The record, which was created over 18 months, three countries and five recording studios, draws influence from the likes of Biffy Clyro, Reuben and Thrice, and is a much more lyrical body of work than Bicurious' previous material, as the band tread new sonic ground. The funding of the album was made possible by a crowdfunding campaign, through which fans helped the band raise over €9000. Thematically, the album explores the various facets of the idea of family, and as one can tell from their crowdfunding efforts, their fans play a crucial role in the band's idea of a family. Letty chats with Gavin and Taran about their progress so far, the new album and influences before Bicurious hit the stage to jam filled Grand Social on the first leg of their Irish tour. Kieran McFeely aka Simple Kid released two acclaimed albums in the noughties before seeming to disappear around 2008. He sold his guitar and packed away his gear. A decade would pass before he went looking for the boxes in his attic. Simple Kid released third album Simple Kid 3: Health & Safety in 2022, and played a show at Whelan's in April 2023. Now, Simple Kid plays the Grand Social in Dublin on Saturday, May 4, and Cyprus Avenue, Cork, on Sunday, May 5, presented by Singular Artists. From Cork, it will be his first hometown show in 17 years. Ahead of the shows, he talks on the TPOE podcast about his journey, how he came back to the Simple Kid project after 10 years not thinking about it. We talk about his old band the V Necks/The Young Offenders, and how that led to his solo project in the early 2000s. Acclaim, charting, and an appearance on 'Later with Jools Holland' all followed. Buy tickets for Simple Kid live at the Grand Social and Cyprus Avenue: https://singularartists.ie/show/simple-kid-2024/ ----- Press release: Once upon a time, back in 2003, a young hopeful by the name of Simple Kid emerged with his first solo album, Simple Kid 1: full of optimism and arrogance, he was sure of his place in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. He garnered some awards nominations, some high profile tours, some good times, some bad. Like many before and since, he was ‘the next big thing' with a UK Top 40, appearances on ‘Later With Jools', Glastonbury slots and prestigious touring. In 2008, he followed this up with Simple Kid 2: not so many awards, not so much TV, lots of touring but running out of money, hair receding, girlfriend pregnant. Then along came ‘life'. And life said that Simple Kid needed to change the chapter in his book, to move on. So Simple Kid became Kieran and started to do things like: get a job, get tired, raise children, have financial struggles. Still some good times, some bad. But secretly in 2018, Kieran bought a guitar, a microphone and some speakers and started recording quietly in his loft. He didn't tell anyone, not even his family. He started uploading songs to YouTube and eventually released 13 of these songs as an album called ‘Simple Kid 3: Health & Safety' in 2022. Kieran has now changed his name back to Simple Kid and decided to come out to play again. He imagines there will be some good times, some bad.

What kinds of support do we need in this season of life? Who is the best person for that? Sometimes it's children or grandchildren – but sometimes it's not!So often people think the answer to better social wellness is to whittle down connections. I think the opposite is true; the more we cut connections, the more pressure there is on the select few to fulfill ALL our social needs. We are unique, dynamic people that deserve to have social connection in a variety of ways.In this episode you'll hear about:More Than Grand, which focuses on helping parents and grandparents communicate better with each other and transition new grandparents into their new roleWhat is being a grandparent? What have we been told by society that grandparenting entails, and how are some of those messages harmful? How the hyper-focus of being a grandparent can put a lot of pressure on children and grandchildren to fulfill ALL social wellness needsThe lack of control we have regarding whether or not we become grandparents – and other ways to get the “grandparent” experienceNavigating the grandparent/adult child relationship, which changes when grandchildren arrive, and the importance of sharing expectations with each otherMixing family and friends at gatherings and the importance of being open to letting go of old traditions and embracing new onesResources & LinksLearn about More Than Grand through DeeDee's website, Instagram, and Facebook, and check out DeeDee's New Grandparent Essentials kit. Today's premiere showcases a debut release from Dublin-based DJ, producer and promoter Matthew Sorensen. At just 18 years of age, Matthew has provided sensational insight into his knowledge and passion as an upcoming music producer with a compelling track steeped deep in 90s old-school roots, furthermore, he has also been so kind to set this track as a free download. Matthew Sorensen is a Dublin-based promoter, DJ, producer and promoter who favours thrilling dance music. This includes but is not limited to slamming techno as well as old-school rave tunes which have shaped the young artists' taste from a very early age. This has led him to perform at multiple venues across the city such as Index, Bow Lane Social Club and The Grand Social for parties such as Slither and Somewhere Else respectively. Not only is this an essential part of Matthew's library when mixing but this is also evident in his bookings as Counter Culture's main man in charge. This style can even be heard in his remarkably consistent productions, with more releases to follow. Take Me Up acts as a memory of the 90s rave scene in Dublin. This particular track is a classic example of the genre, fusing the old with the new as a driving bassline is introduced from the get-go. Setting the tone from the very first note. Fierce low-end is met with crisp hi-hats and snares ultimately creating a frenetic energy that's truly infectious from the first listen. The latest entry to the Local Selection Mix Series welcomes Jayne Veronica. She is an Irish-American DJ and producer who's carefully selected some of her favourite selections in recent times, fusing together an array of techno tracks to form this compelling recording. Marking her as the 192nd admission to the series. Today's Local Selection broadcasts a recording that was crafted with some of Jayne Veronica's standout selections in mind. Possessing a flair for showcasing fist-pumping techno, her sound typically lies between hardcore and industrial techno, taking inspiration from artists such as Charlotte De Witte, Jacidorex, and Nico Moreno. Over a short span of time, Jayne has earned herself slots at numerous parties across Ireland and the UK, with shows in Cork, Dublin, Waterford, Doncaster, and Liverpool crowds experiencing her in the booth. Supporting a range of artists that include Tommy Holohan, Rudosa, and Azyr as well as an imminent support slot for Parfait next month at The Grand Social while also making her Egg London debut alongside Grace Dahl, Mark Blair, and Kyle E. The year ahead looks positive for Jayne as she continues to grow as a DJ and producer, amassing a range of slots at shows right across Ireland and the UK while honing in on the production process simultaneously. This weeks entry to the Local Selection Mix Series welcomes Irish techno heavy-hitter, Flores. Supplying just over 70 minutes worth of quality techno, traversing through funky and harsher sounding selections from the Tullamore native. Making for an acute listening experience. Dig into this! Today we welcome Flores to the Local Selection Mix Series. The budding DJ and producer has shown to be a force to be reckoned with as of late, playing an array of shows spanning all across the country, including Galway, Limerick, Offaly, Dublin and Waterford. Flores has had an exciting year, where he supported the legendary Mauro Picotto in Galway and sold out a co-headline Shed Residents show with Mav666 as well as a sold-out solo Cork headline show. This week he announced his Belfast debut at The Telegraph Building on St. Patricks Day next year alongside Mav666, joined by blk., Aeron XTC and more on the line-up. No doubt 2023 is shaping up to be a monumental year for Flores and we cannot wait to see him flourish. Additionally, Flores holds a residency with CNTRL, a label and events collective that is Galway-Dublin based. CNTRL have made a valiant effort since entering the Dublin party landscape where they are eager to introduce a harder, more brass techno sound to the city. Having recently run a hugely successful local party at The Grand Social alongside Hybrid Events where they had Jamie Behan b2b Jon Hussey headline for their first ever back-to-back. Since then, they have been trusted in providing a Room 2 takeover in Monroe's in Galway for Ewan McVicar and Dart, which turned out to be a massive success. They're now looking forward to their first Room 2 takeover in Index on December 27th with TRYM, where the reception has been massive. If you are unfamiliar with Flores, whether it be his sound, productions or mixing capabilities, then you need to give this mix a listen. He has provided us with a recording that is nothing short of beautifully crafted mayhem. If you need a spring in your step, put this on. You won't be disappointed. Making their appearance on the Local Selection Mix Series this week is Dublin based DJ and producer, Dialōg. The Influence Collective co-owner and resident steps up with an hour of power focusing primarily on gritty, slamming selections from start to finish. Get ready, this gets crazy. Dialōg makes his Local Selection debut today. Coming in at the 182nd entry to the series, he possesses a deep rooted passion for a variety of electronic music. Though, in particular, Dialōg is a massive fan of raw sounding, highly energetic compositions which further fuels his preference for hard techno music. Noticeably, this can be heard in abundance throughout this recording. Dialōg has done a fantastic job at translating this passion and dedication into his productions. Amassing support from some of hard technos most recognisable names such as Shlømo, Clara Cuve, CLTX, Charlie Sparks, TRYM, and ØTTA. With news of Dialōg's next release coming in early 2023 on Berlin's Sindex, you can expect to hear a lot more of his blistering productions in the near future. Influence Collective has seen a steady rise in success in recent times among Dublin's dance music scene. Throwing notable parties that include some stellar acts, comprising of Nico Moreno and ÅMRTÜM, with more hectic parties in the pipeline for 2023, Dialōg and the rest of the Influence crew have been very busy. During this time, Dialōg has been gradually building his experience as a DJ. On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (06/17/22), Hank discusses the grand social engineering experiment that has been aggressively challenging and reshaping culture. An article in the Washington Post details the story of M Barclay, the first non-binary transgender member of the clergy in the United Methodist Church. Barclay is preaching from the LGBTQI handbook—Biblical theology that was hammered out through the Ecumenical Councils and the Creeds no longer has any room or place in the process. If this is what is happening in the second-largest Protestant denomination in America, you can only imagine what as yet looms on the horizon. When the Church becomes baptized secular humanism, when the Biblical injunctions have no more meaning, then the Church is no longer the Church. In the words of Jesus, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot” (Matthew 5:13 NIV).Hank also answers the following questions:Romans 8:39 says nothing can separate us from the love of God, yet Hebrew 6 warns of falling away through apostasy. Can a Christian lose his salvation? How do you explain Judas? He was one of the disciples, yet he betrayed Christ. What are your feelings about honoring Sunday, instead of Saturday, as the Sabbath?

Local selection 163 comes from Lost resident Gaff, as the Dublin based producer comes through with a slamming assortment of hard techno and hardcore. Gaffa's not messing about in this mix, coming in hard and fast from the get go. Based in Dublin, Gaffa is the alias of Meath native Paul Darcy, well known in Dublin's club scene for the last few years as a DJ, producer, and promoter for the successful ‘LOST' collective, which he co-founded in 2018. Having played at many different club nights and festivals in the past, he has become most notable for his ability to blend different styles and genres. Under the guise of Gaffa, Paul is creating a sound that spans across hard techno, gabber, jungle and much more. Having recently played sets in The Sound House, Index and The Grand Social, he is going from strength to strength and is certainly one to watch. This mix showcases where Gaffa is at musically in 2022, leaning on the harder spectrum of techno with elements of hardcore and jungle throughout. This one is not for the faint hearted, if you're at a speaker turn it down, because this is about to get loud. We first heard LOU's music at the start of 2021, as he self released his feel good house tracks entitled 'Nature Tool' and 'Forest Void', which prompted us to get in touch with the young producer to request to premiere one of his next tracks, such was our love for his sound. Hailing from the small town of Portarlington, Laois, LOU is a 23-year-old Irish DJ & producer, who like most, began his DJ career playing locally, running club nights and parties in his hometown, while playing raves and club nights across the Midlands. Upon arriving in NCAD for college in Dublin, he went on to create the NCADJ Society with fellow rave confederate Lorcan Rush, throwing regular 'anything goes' parties on campus and across venues in Dublin. This helped open the door for him to start playing solo at club nights in the city and beyond, featuring in spaces such as Hangar (R.I.P), Wigwam, Berlin D2, Button Factory and The Grand Social where he appeared alongside the likes of Or:la, Saoirse, Cromby & Long Island Sound to name just a few. 3 years ago, LOU made the decision to venture into production, using his spare time from college work to get to grips with Ableton. In December of 2019 he began releasing music and since the pandemic hit he has been using the lockdowns to hone in on his craft, experimenting with different styles and learning new techniques. His most recent productions have been of a house and breakbeat nature, taking influence from productions of the 90's and the more euphoric sounding modern day releases. You can check out LOU's track 'Jowai Resort' which we premiere today via our SoundCloud. LOU has kindly given us this to us as a free download, so help yourself to a copy. Groovement Soul Podcast No.14 is Leftside Wobble's live set from our monthly residency in The Grand Social on the 29th September 2012. Check the grooves that rocked the party on the night. INTERVIEWQuestions by Colin Leopold Q: Where is your favourite place to (a) have a beer (b) have a dance (c) eat dinner? A: Not that I'm swerving the question but in all three cases it's anywhere where the company is great. Q: Do you think there are less boundaries between soulful music in 2012? A: If anything, I think over time dance music has become even more controlled by ever more micro genres. In the 80s before the advent of house music, the better clubs weren't afraid to book DJ's that played diverse music that crossed genre boundaries. New York DJ's such as Mark Kamins, John 'Jellybean' Benitez, Arthur Baker and Francois K were so good at putting together diverse sets that fused multiple musical influences together. Those DJ's have probably been my biggest influence. Q: What advice would you give to best join the dots in a DJ set?A: For me, it's about being in tune with the crowd and not being afraid to play with the mood and energy of the room through the music you're playing. Q: What DJs do you listen to? A: As many as I can. Monday's generally involve me booting up the iPlayer to listen to Giles Petersens show but I also ensure I download mixes from my favourite club DJ's. People like Chris Duckenfield, Gerd Jensen and Move D. Q: You worked a lot with Dazed and Confused magazine in the 90s, what magazine do you read these days and if you could set up your own non-music magazine what would it cover and what would it be called?A: Most of my reading habits have moved to digital media formats these days, but I still keep an eye on what's happening in print publishing via a great blog called Magculture. It specialises in finding those really interesting micro publishing titles that cross the boundaries between culture, fashion and music. From a digital sperspective though, I'm really excited by tablets as a magazine format. There's a really great iPad magazine called Letter To Jane the reminds me very much of the early days of Dazed & Confused in the way that it does really original stuff with it's publishing medium. In the same way that Dazed made you think differently about print media, Letter To Jane does the same with interactive media. Not that I've got any ambition to set up my own magazine, but if I did it would definitely be something for digital tablets. As for a name, Jefferson Hack got there first when he named his Dazed & Confused spin-off Another Magazine. Q: Where do you find your new music? Name your hottest recent discovery or 'one to watch'? A: Soundcloud has obviously become a very important source of music discovery for me in recent years as I love the direct contact with artists it provides which isn't coloured by the opinions of others such as music journalists or record store employees. I obviously don't rely solely on Soundcloud for music discovery, but I just try to ensure my ears/eyes are always open, whatever the source – radio, social media, email newsletters, promos etc. The most exciting band I've discovered this year is a band called Public Service Broadcasting – so hard to describe but in a strange way they remind me of Lemonjelly. Search out a track of theirs called Spitfire on YouTube and you'll get what I mean, the visuals are such an integral part of their music. Q: You did an edit of The Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows. Who's your favourite Beatle and why? | A: That's a really hard one as it constantly flips between John Lennon and George Harrison. At the moment it's George but probably only because I recently bought the Martin Scorsese documentary about his life 'Living In The Material World'. I've just been asked to DJ at an evening to launch the DVD/Blue Ray release of The Beatles 'Magical Mystery Tour' movie so my opinion will probably change again after I've been exposed to the psychedelic joys that evening brings! Q: What's the last country you visited to DJ and what was your best, and worst memory of it? A: I've just got back from Barcelona, where I was DJing for a night called Playtime. It was at a brand new venue on the Ramblas which if I'm to be totally honest, I had grave reservations about seeing as the Ramblas is in the centre of Barcelonas tourist district. But it was a fantastic little club with the best small club sound system I've come across outside of London's Plastic People. My favourite memory of the weekend was meeting so many friends that I've made over the last few years through things like Soundcloud. It's a beautifully strange sensation when you feel you know somebody pretty well but you're only meeting them face to face for the first time. The worst part of the weekend was arriving back at my hotel for a quick kip 15 minutes before check-out and finding out that my room was already booked by somebody else so I had no way of bribing the staff into allowing me an extra couple of hours in the room! Q: Did you go to Notting Hill Carnival this year? How was it and what are your top three essentials to bring to make it a good Carnival? A: Notting Hill Carnival is one of my highlights of the year and I'm lucky enough to DJ on what for me is Carnivals best sound system – Sancho Panza. I also run an after party with the Sancho crew on the Sunday night. As for three essentials, 1.) A smile 2.) Your dancing feet 3.) Some form of carnival guilty pleasure – pick your own!

Groovement Soul Podcast episode NO.13 is an exclusive disco mix compiled by Million Dollar Disco don Al Kent as a teaser for his upcoming gig with us in The Grand Social on the 25th August 2012. It's a straight up disco mix packed with gems and everyone at Groovement Soul HQ is really digging the vibes. INTERVIEWQuestions compiled by Colin Leopold and Keith Dalton  Q. You played Southport Weekender in May. How has it changed from recent years and what time did you make it to bed?A. It's changed quite a bit because they have the new venue now. Not in a bad way, it just feels a bit different. Still the same people loving the same music though. And that's what makes it what it is, so it's all good. The Connoisseur's Corner is a much better room now, much bigger, better atmosphere. It's not like it was back in the day though - not as many moustaches for a start.  I think I got to bed at 7am or so. It's hard to leave because there's always something going on. Q.With so many old and new disco compilations out there, how do you go about sourcing tunes and giving listeners something different?A. I don't know.. I just buy records I like when I can find them. It's got harder in the last few years though because more and more people are chasing the same records. But I try to avoid getting involved in all that.. there's still plenty of records out there that are gathering dust with my name on them.Q. You are well-known for having an extensive record collection of disco rarities. If you arrived home to find your house burning down, what one record would you run in to save and why?A. It would have to be Walter Gibbons' mix of Gladys Knight. Because I love Walter and that's an expensive one to replace. All my Walter records are stored together though so I'd probably cheat and grab them all.Q. Searching for old records can bring you across some strange characters and situations. What's the weirdest record buying experience you've had in the search for a beat?A. Probably a guy I met at a record fair in Glasgow who had a crate of not bad disco stuff, told me he had a warehouse full of it in London so we arranged for me to go down. He probably thought I wouldn't show up, but I did.. he seemed a little freaked out when I called to say I'd arrived, then he took me to his "warehouse" - a lockup garage on some dodgy estate that had obviously been flooded daily for a decade, full of really shit pop records floating in mud. You always get bullshitters - guys who've got tons of records that they never let you see. Record collectors are weird.Q. What effect has the popularity of Soundcloud had on you as a dj and releaser of music?A. None! I avoid it as much as I can. I do have an account, and I do update my stuff occasionally, but not often. There's just too much garbage on there to wade through. Most of it seems pointless.. just people desperate for comments.Q. What's the secret to a good disco edit? Any new names to watch out for and what are they doing differently?A. I don't really know the answer to that. But editing is like production.. it takes a certain level of skill, and a good ear, a good understanding of music. There's too many people think that making a played out disco record a bit longer is a good idea. Soundcloud's full of that.Q. Tell me about the Scottish music scene. What do you love and hate about living in Glasgow?A. Scotland's always had a great music scene, especially Glasgow. But things are getting tough now because there aren't as many people left who are genuinely into good music. We've all got a bit older and nights out happen less often so it's hard to get the crowds that used to be out every weekend. Which means a lot of really good parties can't compete. It's a real labour of love, which actually makes for better parties, but also means a lot of potentially great ones fall on their arse.. It's the same everywhere now though. Young people just want cheap drinks and not many seem to have great taste in music.A. I love Glasgow because it's my home.. I know it like the back of my hand. There's not really anything I hate about it. It's kind of annoying that I have to fly half way across the world to get gigs though.Q. In 2008 you launched a live disco project with an orchestra under the Million Dollar Disco moniker, tell me a little about how this came together. What was the biggest challenge in such a grand project?A. It was really just an idea to add some live musicians to my productions that grew wings. I started with some keys, then found a bass player and eventually ended up with twenty musicians, including a horn and string section.  The biggest challenge was really just finding enough channels on the desk for all the parts we recorded!Q. A lot of the best disco is about vocals. What makes a 'good song' in your opinion?A. Soul. Anything sung with real passion has the potential to be a great song. I love lyrics too - that's something that's becoming a bit of a lost art. Q. How important is the artwork of your compilations to you? Is this your own work and if so how did you get into it? A. Yes, I do it all myself. It's really important to me - I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I couldn't really let anyone else do something like that for me. I'd just tear it to shreds. I'd be the worst client ever.   I've always been into art, especially graphics. I do quite a bit of that stuff.Find out more about the Al Kent story. TRACKLIST 1. Al Kent - Open Up Your Mind2.
