Prioritizing Profit with Rocky Lalvani

What Are You Made Of?

I’m all about sales and margins. Even as a kid, I was on the golf course gathering up golf balls and selling them on at a great margin! Today, I’m just as focussed on getting that profit because I am working towards financial freedom and living the life I want. I have clarity and commitment to my end goal. But, often, as business owners, it’s easy to lose sight of that and become bogged down in prioritizing the wrong things. You get caught up in expenses and don’t put aside profit. Suddenly it comes to year end and there’s nothing in the pot.   My guest this week, is Rocky Lalvani. He moved with his parents from India to the US when he was very young. They worked incredible hard to achieve the American dream and make themselves a success. But, when Rocky’s mum died when he was just 7 years old, instead of breaking him down, he found inner strength that helped skyrocket him to financial success. Today, Rocky helps business owners reassess their outlook on life and start prioritizing profit in order to get the life you want to live. He believes that business owners need to reverse that equation of “sales – expenses = profits” and turn it into “sales – profit = expenses.” Once you stop seeing profit as a leftover after expenses and making profit a priority, you get off that roller-coaster, you start making tougher choices on your expenses and margins and you start working towards financial freedom. Find out about: How to stop thinking of profit as a leftover and get in the habit of prioritizing and setting aside profit Why you should start with how you want live your life, first and then get your business to fit the life you want to live Focussing on chasing profit as opposed to revenue Creating clarity on what you want and working towards financial freedom Not running from your dreams when someone digs at you and showing them what you’re made of   If you want to check out the book Rocky was talking about, it’s Profit First, by Mike Michalowicz (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Profit-First-Transform-Cash-Eating-Money-Making/dp/073521414X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3VYAXVR8271QS&keywords=profit+first&qid=1576674827&sprefix=profit+fir%2Caps%2C146&sr=8-1) . Mike Michalowicz is the entrepreneur behind three multimillion-dollar companies and is the author of Profit First, The Pumpkin Plan and what BusinessWeek deemed the entrepreneur’s cult classic, The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur. Mike is a former small business columnist for The Wall Street Journal and the former business makeover specialist on MSNBC. Today Mike travels the world as an entrepreneurial advocate speaking to groups just like aftermarket professionals. He is globally recognized as the guy who “challenges outdated business beliefs” and teaches us what to do about it. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/073521414X/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&linkCode=li3&tag=remarkableres-20&linkId=14aa6c38ef90e54a7035822caf1ff868&language=en_US) Carm Note: I loved this book and believe it should be required reading for all aftermarket professionals if you own a shop or not. The principles in this book will help set you free from the ‘I’ve run out of cash and I can’t pay myself’ syndrome. Mike’s father-in-law is a shop owner so he does understand the challenges of our profession. I’ve heard from your industry peers who have implemented ‘Profit First’ and they are well on their way of making the kind of profits indicative of the investment they make in their business. Make Profit First a way of doing business. You deserve to be incredibly successful but you must implement this system or something similar to control your spending. You’ll soon find where your weak area is, yet still profit from your hard work.   Key Talking Points: Actions of owners trigger profitability or lack thereof Cash flow management system The money will flow into the shop Then allocated to the profitability of the company Pay owner/operator, taxes, parts, operations of a business Now can see what money is available for what purpose before spend it Revenue Profitability trap- if profitability down then will revert to sell more, if you want to be profitable then you need to reallocate money to profit. Every transaction has a piece allocated to profit. Money taken out stored away, business runs off of the remainder. 5 core fundamental accounts Income- the inflow of cash Profit- reward shareholders (owning stock in your own company) Owner compensation- owner salary Taxes- business pays for taxes The account that manages operations of the business “Profitability isn’t an event, it’s a habit.” – not bottom line not year end Sales-profit= expenses  (new formula) Support networkFind support with another shop, accountability partner Profit First Professionals- trainer Efficiency- the secret sauce Always Improve Piggy bank Had nonprofitable computer technology businesses. Sold first company and made money Started a second company- sold to Fortune 500 Started third company- went into debt in 2008. Had to tell the family they were going to lose house and possessions. Told 9-year-old daughter he wouldn’t be able to pay for horseback riding lessons. Daughter ran to the bedroom and brought the piggy bank back to Mike to help support the family. Awakening and turning point- learned how to create a successful business and make profit a habit    Healthy business Can run with the complete absence of owner- 4 full weeks physical and digital disconnect Resources: Thanks to Mike Michalowicz for their contribution to the aftermarket’s premier podcast. Mike and I talk about the ways new business owners can easily know if they are profitable without having to wait unit their bookkeeper or accountant give them their monthly P&L statement. You know as soon as you move the money to the appropriate accounts if you’re making money or losing money on each job. You also put your money into your profit accounts first! So you make a profit on every job rather than your profit being the number left over when the expenses are all paid.   1 Create 5 accounts, in the beginning, at your bank. 2 Determine the percentage of money that goes to each of those accounts. 3 Take out 50% of the profits each quarter to spend on yourself….NOT on the business! 4 Create a CapEx account to budget for future capital expenses within the business.   Reach out to Mike here  www.mikemotorbike.com   Find Tersh @ Tersh@bluecollarroots.com or in our facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/153387135246751/   Get the book here: https://www.amazon.com/Profit-First-Transform-Cash-Eating-Money-Making/dp/073521414X/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=073521414X&pd_rd_r=a63701b5-d305-11e8-a131-6575a75a3b80&pd_rd_w=Uq83U&pd_rd_wg=Mpt6H&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=6725dbd6-9917-451d-beba-16af7874e407&pf_rd_r=PWQ3YX6HT703RT4A2WTH&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=PWQ3YX6HT703RT4A2WTH

Profit First for Gyms and FitnessThis episode is a referral from Profit First Professionals (http://www.profitfirstprofessionals.com/)  and is here to help save gyms, fitness professionals and more. On This Episode You Will Hear:[spp-timestamp time="01:54"] How Shannon stumbled across helping Gym and Fitness centers with their accounting as a niche. [spp-timestamp time="04:27"] How Shannon made the transition into this niche. [spp-timestamp time="06:31"] Shannon was one of the first members of the P.F. Professionals. She had been doing Virtual Bookkeeping for ten years before the book came out. There were so many Entrepreneurs she wanted to help but with all the accounting jargon she knew Entrepreneurs would not relate. That is the biggest thing she likes about the system, is it was written by an Entrepreneur for an Entrepreneur, so they can relate. [spp-timestamp time="09:03"] You have to face reality and know where your business is, compared to where a healthy business is. [spp-timestamp time="11:24"] Mike recommends having at least five basic accounts, Shannon has identified three others for the fitness industry. This system works for personal life as well. Shannon uses an example of someone repaying $100,000 of debt off in 18 months by using this in their personal life. [spp-timestamp time="16:26"] Shannon recommends all Gym owners have an Equipment Account, even if you allocate a small amount to that account each month, it will compound by the end of the year so it can be used on new equipment. [spp-timestamp time="21:16"] This system is a proactive way to look at your finances. [spp-timestamp time="28:28"] Shannon recommends you should focus on creating the five accounts right from the beginning [spp-timestamp time="31:44"] There are three extra accounts Shannon has found that the fitness industry should have, one of them is the Equipment/Capital Expenses Account, [spp-timestamp time="33:06"] The point of Profit First is to get people to finally enjoy running their businesses, even if they are only paying themselves 2% profit, you are paying that right away. You don't distribute your profits from the profit account until the end of each quarter. Profit First Professionals call it the "Quarterly Profit Distribution". [spp-timestamp time="35:25"] You don't take money from your Profit account and put it back into your business. Your profit is there for you to enjoy your hard work, even if it is only 1-2%, especially for gyms! [spp-timestamp time="37:26"] The more money we have, the more money we spend. [spp-timestamp time="39:37"] There are people out there that have a decent handle on their finances but are missing the enjoyment piece. Living with the income instead of living ahead of the income. [spp-timestamp time="44:00"] Who is your best employee? The answer is YOU! You have to compensate yourself.
