This week with Alex Bush: Focus on the key principles of training, such as proper form and technique, rather than getting caught up in minor details. Hypertrophy training is beneficial for individuals of all backgrounds and goals, not just bodybuilders. Patience is crucial in training and nutrition, as results take time to manifest. The gym should be seen as a place to build up the body rather than just burn calories. Individualization is key in training and nutrition, considering factors such as body structure and exercise execution. Short-form content on social media can be contradictory and lack context, making it challenging for consumers to navigate fitness advice. Coaches should prioritize serving their customer base and providing individualized guidance, rather than seeking validation from other coaches. Home gyms can be convenient, but commercial gyms offer a better environment for hypertrophy purposes and variety of equipment. When it comes to nutrition, tracking food intake and prioritizing protein are key for achieving fitness goals. Recommended supplements include magnesium, vitamin D, and fish oil, but individual needs may vary. Low-fat diets can be challenging and may require careful tracking and monitoring of fat intake. Extreme dieting and restrictive eating practices are not necessary or healthy for the majority of people. Eggs are a good source of micronutrients but should not be relied upon as the sole protein source due to their high fat content. The 'What I Eat in a Day' trend can be misleading and may not be applicable to everyone's dietary needs and preferences. Instead of focusing on exact macros, it is more helpful to use recipes as inspiration and learn how to combine different food sources. Following someone else's diet without considering individual differences and preferences may lead to dissatisfaction and lack of results. Excuses and results are mutually exclusive - to achieve desired outcomes, one must take responsibility and take action. Today, I interviewed a newer friend of mine—Alex Bush. Alex is a co-owner of Physique Development and he is an expert on all things training related. I wanted to get him on here to give a little bit of a different perspective on training because training is such an important part of weight loss and transformation—if your training is not in the right place, it will yield very different results than if your training is set up correctly. We talk about not only training with the optimal program/plan—and doing things the best way possible—but also training in a practical way. Where does 'optimal' training and 'practical' training intersect for the average person? Alex gives some amazing insights around the most common questions our listeners have about training, like what constitutes a good workout, how to prepare yourself mentally to go into a workout, how to select the right weight, and much more. I'm super pumped for you all to hear this episode, so let's get into it! Damien Jurado - Taped in Front of a Live Studio Audience from the 2022 album Reggae Film Star on Maraqopa. Longtime KEXP-favorite Damien Jurado is on the heels of releasing his 18th album Reggae Film Star this June. The album comes 25 years after his debut album Waters Ave S. and is just one of seven albums the prolific songwriter wrote and recorded during the pandemic. 2021's The Monster Who Ate Pennsylvania was the first of those to be released. Our Song of the Day is the short but sweet “Taped In Front of a Live Studio Audience.” Over a softly driving beat and warm, thrumming guitars, Jurado paints a picture of a day in the life of an exhausted working mother, doing her best to keep it together or at least stay awake. With lines like “Who's screaming at the top of their lungs? /Well I don't have time, and my patience is running thin,” the song is a relatable story for those familiar with the comedy of parenting. Reggae Film Sta is due digitally and on CD June 24 via his own Maraqopa Records, with vinyl arriving July 8. Damien produced it himself alongside multi-instrumentalist Josh Gordon and recording engineer Alex Bush. This is Sue's second appearance on the podcast and she brought some—albeit calm and collected—hot fire to this conversation. Sue and I went to college together, so it's been such a treat watching her thrive and flourish in our industry. She's hard-working, kind, and knows her shit, so she deserves every bit of her success. For those who don't know, Sue is part-owner of Physique Development, an online personal training company between her, Alex Bush (her hubby), and Austin Current. In this weeks episode of Anabolic Radio I had the pleasure of chatting to @alexbush_ from Physique Development about a variety of topics related to coaching.Unfortunately, with online coaching being easily accessible to a majority malpractice within the coaching space has become a very common issue. Over the course of my career coaching I’ve heard some pretty ridiculous horror stories, people getting scammed, low calorie starvation diets, eliminating macronutrient groups and excessive amounts of cardio, drugs, the list goes on and on.One of my main goals as an established coach within the evidence based space is to contribute in whatever way I can to help minimize bad coaching practices and help others find the true value of what they’re looking for when working with a coach. Coaches on social feel the impetus for growth. That pressure likely comes from consuming Instagram mainstream, fits, or even business coaching- but before you start chasing dollars as a coach, you must chase passion.Get really obsessed and being a proactive problem solver and figuring out how to apply knowledge/information/experience based on individual context. Quality coaching means continual and steadfast effort in education and growth for both yourself and your clients. This means your failures, learning lessons, and mistakes should always come before your clients like a shield for their results.Being excellent at your job is going to serve as the foundation for your client experience and given your work speaks for itself, your clients will do your marketing for you which will allow you to scale long term. The expectation shouldn’t be perfection, rather continuous skill acquisition and consistent improvement over time.
