The last four years have been a big reset for the salon industry. When we shut down in 2020 we learned that many of our clients see us as essential workers. We saw a surge in demand coming out of lockdown. But now, we once again need to raise our standards to keep our clients. The pandemic years also accelerated a trend towards employees asking for more flexibility in shaping their schedules. Here at Summit we embrace these changes and want to grow salon companies that can support and retain stylists over the course of the life cycle. We've created new exclusive spaces online for the Summit community, and even redesigned our signature event -- the Summit -- to make it more accessible and closer to home. In today's episode, we're going to focus on one of the most misunderstood concepts among salon industry professionals: the ‘P' word (i.e. PROFIT). Reliable data in the salon industry is often hard to come by. But, what is usually agreed on is that when it comes to profit margins, the average salon has a net profit margin of somewhere between 0-8%. The good news is that with a little bit of education and thoughtful strategising, that is something we can change! So, if you're unsure what exactly gross, net, and operating profit are, why you need to make a profit, or how to make your business more profitable, you've come to the right place! In this episode, Nina proclaims 2024 to be the year of perspective for the salon industry. One viral TiKTok or some comments from random strangers on the Internet is not fact, or truth. The algorithms are designed to feed off our enragement and discourse. Because of that, we are collectively losing perspective around how different salon businesses and models work, how salons make decisions aligned with their brands, and how salons grow. Whether it be overcorrecting and confusing healthy boundaries and walls, connecting the prices you charge and client feedback with your personal worth, tossing out the fundamentals of client retention and happiness, deciding salon business ownership wasn't for you, having the best year ever, or the worst, we talk about it all to help you regain and retain perspective to have a more awesome, authentic and aligned with your brand year. You can find Passion Squared on the socials here and here, and on the web here. You can learn more about Creating Your Awesome Salon Brand here. Thank you so much for listening. Alcohol and drug addiction are a fact of life for people from all walks of life. However, in the creative industries, it is perhaps a more prevalent struggle than in others. My guest on today's episode is salon owner Clive Allwright who, alongside Amie Morris, recently started the Straight Edge podcast, a weekly show dedicated to addiction and addictive behaviours. We're living in a time of cultural transition. Individuals are openly expressing gender and sexuality with more freedom than before. At the same time, some still believe that expression outside of the traditional cisgender heterosexual frame is a bad thing. Others want to be supportive, but are unsure about the correct pronouns and terminology to use, or how to respectfully acknowledge queer identities. As beauty professionals, we want all guests and staff to feel safe and welcome in the salon. So how do we normalize queer inclusivity in our lives and professional spaces? Emily Holiday is an activist and humanitarian, owner of Emily Holiday Salon, and a stylist at Sola Salons in Charlotte, North Carolina. She's a facilitator for queer inclusivity and identity workshops for salon companies and other organizations. Emily considers herself a “brave space”-- that means she's here to answer questions that might be uncomfortable or inappropriate to bring up in everyday life. Even if you're new to talking about gender and sexuality, this episode is for you. Emily and Blake break down all of the letters in LGBTQIA+, talk about what it means to be non-binary, and get at the differences between gender, sexuality, and romantic attraction. Emily shares some simple yet brilliant practices that you can implement at your salon company. And so much more. In this episode, Nina talks about the true purpose of providing home care solutions for your clients and some of the false narratives being shared in the professional salon industry. The truth is, your client's happiness matters not just on the day of their salon visit, but also, all the days in between. The purpose of offering home care is not about money or profits, it is one of the results, however, not the most important result, which is client happiness and convenience. Nina also breaks down the simple math of professional home care, dispelling a narrative about it not having any profit. These narratives, which lack significant context, cause harm and create confusion. It doesn't have to be that way. Together, we can change the narrative, which allows you to make more aligned decisions for your business and brand. Thank you so much for listening. As a hairdresser, you will be familiar with the numbers on a tube of colour or a bottle of peroxide, but if you don't understand key performance indicators or profit margin percentages, you are doing yourself and your business a major disservice! Hairdressers are known to be good at building relationships and thinking creatively, but within the industry, there is recognition that when it comes to ‘financial management,' it's often our weak spot. This is a generalization, but unfortunately, there is no doubt that it is a big part of the reason why so many salons don't survive. This episode explains the importance of knowing your numbers if you want to create a thriving, sustainable salon business (and where you can go to get this financial education!)
